Abstract:The goal of this article is to give an elementary introduction to Dirac geometry and group-valued moment maps, via pure spinors. The material is based on my lectures at the summer school on 'Poisson geometry in Mathematics and Physics' at Keio University, June 2006.

Abstract:We clarify the structure obtained in Hélein and Vey's proposition for a variational principle for the Einstein-Cartan gravitation formulated on a frame bundle starting from a structure-less differentiable 10-manifold. The obtained structure is locally equivalent to a frame bundle which we term "generalised frame bundle". In the same time, we enrich the model with a Dirac spinor coupled to the Einstein-Cartan spacetime. The obtained variational equations generalise the usual Einstein-Cartan-Dirac field equations in that they are shown to imply the usualy field equations when the generalised frame bundle is a standard frame bundle.

Abstract:We introduce a functional that couples the nonlinear sigma model with a spinor field: L = ∫ M [|dφ|2 + (ψ,D/ψ)]. In two dimensions, it is conformally invariant. The critical points of this functional are called Dirac-harmonic maps. We study some geometric and analytic aspects of such maps, in particular a removable singularity theorem.

Abstract:Symplectic and Poisson geometry emerged as a tool to understand the mathematical structure behind classical mechanics. However, due to its huge development over the past century, it has become an independent field of research in differential geometry. In this lecture notes, we will introduce the essential objects and techniques in symplectic geometry (e.g Darboux coordinates, Lagrangian submanifolds, cotangent bundles) and Poisson geometry (e.g symplectic foliations, some examples of Poisson structures). This geometric approach will be motivated by examples from classical physics, and at the end we will explore applications of symplectic and Poisson geometry to Lie theory and other fields of mathematical physics.

Abstract:These are the notes for a minicourse taught at the 2022 ICTP summer school `Frontiers in Geometry and Topology'. The goal is to introduce families of Dirac operators and how they can be used to study interactions between geometry and topology. In particular, we discuss the index theorem for families of twisted Dirac operators, and its applications to metrics of positive scalar curvature and the three-dimensional Weinstein conjecture.

Abstract:The quintet of Dirac $4\times 4$ matrices suggests that the fundamental dimension of the internal (spin) space is $n=5$, instead of the conventional dimension $n=4$. Then extending the usual $4\times 4$ tetrads (vierbein), gravity is described in terms of the 5-bein (fünfbein or five legs). We discuss the properties of the spacetime geometry induced from this 5-leg Dirac spinor theory, where the spin connection contains $10\times 4=40$ elements instead of 24 elements in the tetrad formulation of the general relativity theory.

Abstract:In these lectures I review the general structure of electric--magnetic duality rotations in every even space--time dimension. In four dimensions, which is my main concern, I discuss the general issue of symplectic covariance and how it relates to the typical geometric structures involved by N=2 supersymmetry, namely Special Kähler geometry for the vector multiplets and either HyperKähler or Quaternionic geometry for the hypermultiplets. I discuss classical continuous dualities versus non--perturbative discrete dualities. How the moduli space geometry of an auxiliary dynamical Riemann surface (or Calabi--Yau threefold) relates to exact space--time dualities is exemplified in detail for the Seiberg Witten model of an $SU(2)$ gauge theory.

Abstract:This paper is part of a program to establish the existence theory for the conformally invariant Dirac equation \[ D_{\textit{g}}\psi=f(x)|\psi|_{\textit{g}}^{\frac2{m-1}}\psi \] on a closed spin manifold $(M,\textit{g})$ of dimension $m\geq2$ with a fixed spin structure, where $f:M\to\mathbb{R}$ is a given function. The study on such nonlinear equation is motivated by its important applications in Spin Geometry: when $m=2$, a solution corresponds to an isometric immersion of the universal covering $\widetilde M$ into $\mathbb{R}^3$ with prescribed mean curvature $f$; meanwhile, for general dimensions and $f\equiv constant$, a solution provides an upper bound estimate for the Bär-Hijazi-Lott invariant.

Abstract:The nilpotence variety for extended supersymmetric quantum mechanics is a cone over a quadric in projective space. The pure spinor correspondence, which relates the description of off-shell supermultiplets to the classification of modules over the corresponding hypersurface ring, reduces to a classical problem of linear algebra. Spinor bundles, which correspond to maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, serve as basic building blocks. Koszul duality appears as a deformed version of the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand correspondence that we make fully concrete. We illustrate in numerous examples the close relationship between these connections and the powerful graphical technology of Adinkras, which appear as a decategorification of special complexes on quadrics. We emphasize the role of R-symmetry for recovering higher-dimensional gauge and gravity multiplets.

The universal structure of moment maps in complex geometry

Abstract:We introduce a geometric approach to the construction of moment maps in finite and infinite-dimensional complex geometry. We apply this to two settings: Kähler manifolds and holomorphic vector bundles. Our new approach exploits the existence of universal families and the theory of equivariant differential forms. For Kähler manifolds we give a new, geometric proof of Donaldson-Fujiki's moment map interpretation of the scalar curvature. Associated to arbitrary products of Chern classes of the manifold - namely to a central charge - we further introduce a geometric PDE determining a $Z$-critical Kähler metric, and show that these general equations also satisfy moment map properties. For holomorphic vector bundles, using a similar strategy we give a geometric proof of Atiyah-Bott's moment map interpretation of the Hermitian Yang-Mills condition. We then go on to give a new, geometric proof that the PDE determining a $Z$-critical connection - again associated to a choice of central charge - can be viewed as a moment map; deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills connections are a special case, in which our work gives a geometric proof of a result of Collins-Yau. Our main assertion is that this is the canonical way of producing moment maps in complex geometry - associated to any geometric problem along with a choice of stability condition - and hence that this accomplishes one of the main steps towards producing PDE counterparts to stability conditions in large generality.

New constrained generalized Killing spinor field classes in warped flux compactifications

Abstract:The generalized Fierz identities are addressed in the Kähler-Atiyah bundle framework from the perspective of the equations governing constrained generalized Killing spinor fields. We explore the spin geometry in a Riemannian 8-manifold composing a warped flux compactification AdS$_3\times M_8$, whose metric and fluxes preserve one supersymmetry in AdS$_3$. Supersymmetry conditions can be efficiently translated into spinor bilinear covariants, whose algebraic and differential constraints yield identifying new spinor field classes. Intriguing implications and potential applications are discussed.

Spinors in extended Minkowski space

Abstract:The exterior algebra of Minkowski space naturally has the structure of a sixteen-dimensional Clifford algebra representation, and so can be used as the space of spinors. We examine plane, circular, and spherical solutions to the free Dirac equation in this extended notion of Minkowski space, and indicate how they can be used to obtain solutions to the standard four-dimensional Dirac equation.

Abstract:The notion of quasi-Poisson $G$-spaces with $D/G$-valued moment maps was introduced by Alekseev and Kosmann-Schwarzbach in 1999. Our main result is a \emph{Lifting Theorem}, establishing a bijective correspondence between the categories of quasi-Poisson $G$-spaces with $D/G$-valued moment maps and of quasi-Poisson $G\times G$-spaces with $D$-valued moment maps. Using this result, we give simple constructions of fusion and conjugation for these spaces, and new examples coming from moduli spaces.

Abstract:On $Spin^c$ manifolds, we study the Energy-Momentum tensor associated with a spinor field. First, we give a spinorial Gauss type formula for oriented hypersurfaces of a $Spin^c$ manifold. Using the notion of generalized cylinders, we derive the variationnal formula for the Dirac operator under metric deformation and point out that the Energy-Momentum tensor appears naturally as the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion. Finally, we show that generalized $Spin^c$ Killing spinors for Codazzi Energy-Momentum tensor are restrictions of parallel spinors.

Abstract:Plane-based Geometric Algebra (PGA) has revealed points in a $d$-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}_{p,q,1}$ to be represented by $d$-blades rather than vectors. This discovery allows points to be factored into $d$ orthogonal hyperplanes, establishing points as pseudoscalars of a local geometric algebra $\mathbb{R}_{pq}$. Astonishingly, the non-uniqueness of this factorization reveals the existence of a local $\text{Spin}(p,q)$ geometric gauge group at each point. Moreover, a point can alternatively be factored into a product of the elements of the Cartan subalgebra of $\mathfrak{spin}(p,q)$, which are traditionally used to label spinor representations. Therefore, points reveal previously hidden geometric foundations for some of quantum field theory's mysteries. This work outlines the impact of PGA on the study of spinor representations in any number of dimensions, and is the first in a research programme exploring the consequences of this insight.

Abstract:By bridging geometric and algebraic concepts, this dissertation lays the groundwork for a comprehensive study of the Clifford structures on bundles and spinor fields. We delve into the Kähler-Atiyah bundle, which encapsulates the essence of Clifford algebras and provides profound insights into the algebraic structures underlying geometric frameworks. The algebraic and classical definitions of spinors within Clifford algebras are concerned, as well as their global realisation as sections of the bundle of spinors constructed within a spin structure on a manifold from the Kähler-Atiyah bundle background which serves as an effective framework for applications involving spinors such as their classification based on their bilinear covariants and Fierz identities. Homogeneous differential forms playing the role of bilinear covariants can vanish due to algebraic obstructions in a warped flux compactification AdS$_3 \times M_8$ yielding the identification of new spinor field classes.
