Abstract:Using advanced sample engineering we performed simultaneous measurement of intrinsic (interlayer) tunnelling characteristics and in-situ monitoring of temperature in small Bi-2212 mesa structures. Together with a systematic study of size-dependence of intrinsic tunnelling, this allowed an unambiguous discrimination between artifacts of self-heating and gaps in electronic spectrum of Bi-2212 High-$T_c$ superconductor. Finally, we analyze the reliability of intrinsic tunnelling spectroscopy and discuss how it can be improved.

Abstract:It is shown that the `tunnelling spectra' reported by Yurgens et al. could be reproduced qualitatively and quantitatively using the experimental out-of-plane normal state resistance R(T) and assuming that the heating of the mesa, caused by the Joule dissipation, is the only reason for effects observed at high bias.

Abstract:The out-of-plane current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of Bi2212 are studied in experimental environments of different heat transfer efficiency, allowing practical separation of intrinsic and extrinsic phenomena. {\it Intrinsic} (heating-free) response is Ohmic in the normal state of Bi2212, while its resistance, R=V/I, is found to be a good practical measure of the mean temperature of the sample in the overheated case. A self-heating model proposed for the latter case provides a qualitative and quantitative description of key findings of intrinsic tunnelling spectroscopy including (pseudo)gaps, quasiparticle and normal state resistances. The model also naturally explains the `superconducting' gap closure well below $T_c$ of the material as well as its survival at a magnetic field significantly exceeding $H_{c2}$. The generic shape of the individual branches of the brush-like part of I-V established under conditions of negligible overheating suggests a phase-slip origin of the so-called `intrinsic Josephson effect' (IJE).

Abstract:Submitted for the MAR08 Meeting of The American Physical Society Thermoelectric effects and band-dependent scattering of normalstate quasiparticles in spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 ZHUAN XU, XIANGFAN XU, Zhejiang University, China, TIJIANG LIU, DAVID FOBES, ZHIQIANG MAO, Tulane University, YING LIU, Pennsylvania State University — We present the first measurement on Nernst effects in the normal state of oddparity, spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. Below 100 K, the negative Nernst signal was found to be large and nonlinear as a function of magnetic field with its absolute value increasing rapidly as the temperature was lowered. After reaching a maximum around T = T ∗ = 20 25 K, however, the Nernst signal drops linearly with the decreasing temperature. No corresponding feature was found around this temperature in the specific heat. We argue that the large value of the Nernst signal is related to the presence of multibands and the nonlinearity to band-dependent magnetic fluctuation in Sr2RuO4. Furthermore, the quasiparticle scattering from the magnetic fluctuation is suppressed below T ∗ due to the emergence of coherence among quasiparticles in the γ band, an active band for superconductivity in Sr2RuO4. Results on temperature dependence of the thermopower, which was seen to exhibit a sharp kink around T ∗, provided further support to this picture of banddependent normal-state properties. Our thermoelectric measurements appear to suggest that the suppression of the magnetic fluctuation makes it possible for the spin-triplet superconductivity to emerge in Sr2RuO4. Abstract:We discuss inherent thermometry in a Superconductor - Normal metal - Superconductor tunnel junction. In this configuration, the energy selectivity of single-particle tunneling can provide a significant electron cooling, depending on the bias voltage. The usual approach for measuring the electron temperature consists in using an additional pair of superconducting tunnel junctions as probes. In this paper, we discuss our experiment performed on a different design with no such thermometer. The quasi-equilibrium in the central metallic island is discussed in terms of a kinetic equation including injection and relaxation terms. We determine the electron temperature by comparing the micro-cooler experimental current-voltage characteristic with isothermal theoretical predictions. The limits of validity of this approach, due to the junctions asymmetry, the Andreev reflection or the presence of sub-gap states are discussed.

Abstract:The Kondo effect describes the scattering of conduction electrons by magnetic impurities, manifesting as an electronic resonance at the Fermi energy with a distinctive temperature evolution. In this letter, we present a critical evaluation of the current methodology employed to demonstrate Kondo behavior in transport measurements, underscoring the limitations of established theoretical frameworks and the influence of extrinsic broadening. We introduce a novel approach for analyzing spectroscopic indicators of the Kondo effect, employing the Hurwitz-Fano lineshape as a model for the Kondo resonance in the presence of extrinsic broadening. Through precise scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on an exemplary spin-1/2 Kondo system, phenalenyl on Au(111), we demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed protocol in extracting accurate intrinsic Kondo linewidths from finite-temperature measurements. The extracted linewidths exhibit a robust fit with a recently derived expression for the temperature-dependent intrinsic Kondo linewidth, providing compelling evidence for the validity of the underlying theory.

Abstract:Our Comment [Sivan et al., Science 2019] (as well as its longer version [Dubi, Un, & Sivan, ArXiv 2019], and the supporting theoretical studies [Dubi and Sivan, ArXiv 2018]) on recent attempts to distinguish thermal and non-thermal ("hot carrier") contributions to plasmon-assisted photocatalysis [Zhou et al., Science 2018] initiated a re-evaluation process of previous literature on the topic within the nano-plasmonics and chemistry communities. The Response of Zhou et al. attempts to defend the claims of the original paper. In this manuscript, we show that the Response presents additional data that further validates our central criticism: inaccurately measured temperatures (that are lower than the actual temperature of the catalyst) led Zhou et al. to incorrectly claim conclusive evidence of non-thermal effects. We identify flaws in the experimental setup (e.g. the use of the default settings for the thermal camera and incorrect positioning of the thermometer) that may have led Zhou et al. to make such claims. We further show that the Response contains several factual errors and does not address the technical problems we identified with the data acquisition in [Zhou et al., Science 2018]. We demonstrate that both the Response and the original paper contain additional faults, for example, in the power determination and in the normalization of the rate to the catalyst volume, and exhibit misconceptions regarding the thermo-optic response of metal nanostructures. The burden of proof required by the proposal of a novel physical mechanism has simply not been met, especially when the existing data can be modeled exquisitely by conventional theory.

Abstract:In this Perspective, recent literature on field-effect transistors based on emergent semiconducting materials, including metal-halide perovskites, conjugated polymers, and small-molecule organic semiconductors, is analyzed in terms of electric power and power density reached in transistors' channel during their measurements. We used an in situ IR imaging to directly obtain the surface temperature distribution of biased devices under the experimental conditions commonly used in the literature. It is shown that at such conditions, the semiconducting channel would be resistively self-heated to significant temperatures, easily in excess of 150 °C. This implies a non-equilibrium device operation, possible materials' degradation, parameter drift, and, in the best-case scenario, a non-room-temperature mobility extracted from such measurements. We show that this problem is rather common in various subfields represented in the literature, indicating that paying attention to the biasing conditions in transistor research and monitoring the local temperature of the semiconducting channel are necessary.

Abstract:Zhou et al . (Reports, 5 October 2018, p. 69) claim to have proven dominance of “hot” electrons over thermal effects in plasmonic photocatalysis. We identify experimental flaws that caused overestimation of the hot carrier contribution. As an alternative interpretation, we fully reproduce their data using a purely thermal Arrhenius law with a fixed activation energy and intensity-dependent heating.

Abstract:Local measurements of heat flux in Quantum Hall devices can deviate from the expected equilibrium heat flux due to interactions. We present a model of a simple mesoscopic device consisting of an Ohmic reservoir contacted by chiral edge states. In contrast to the well studied heat Coulomb blockade (HCB) effect, we report the opposite phenomenon, an enhancement of the heat flux carried by an edge state in the HCB regime due to an additional contribution of the collective charge mode via the fluctuating potential of the Ohmic contact. We discuss the thermometry of these correlared states and discuss their detectability. The enhancement effect is also reflected in modified correlation functions, which influences the electrical and thermal linear response coefficients in a tunneling probe measurement. On a technical level, we introduce a Langevin formalism that elucidates the role of these extra fluctuations in electrical and thermal transport, both in uniformly heated and Joule heated devices and argue that our approach has advantages in the latter scenario compared to the standard $P (E)$ theory. We report a violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law, which is modified by the external resistance of the mesoscopic circuit.

Heat conduction in herbertsmithite: field dependence at the onset of the quantum spin liquid regime

Abstract:We report thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of herbertsmithite, over a wide range of temperatures (0.05-120 K) in magnetic fields up to 15 T. We also report measurements of the thermal Hall effect, found to be vanishingly small. At high temperatures, in the paramagnetic regime, the thermal conductivity has a negligible field dependence. Upon cooling and the development of correlations, the onset of a clear monotonic field dependence below about 20 K signals a new characteristic temperature scale that may reflect the subtle crossover towards the quantum spin liquid regime. Deconfined spinons, if present, are not detected and phonons, as the main carriers of heat, are strongly scattered by the intrinsic spin excitations and the magnetic defects. In view of the colossal fields required to affect the intrinsic spins, most of the field-induced evolution is attributed to the progressive polarization of some magnetic defects. By elaborating a phenomenological model, we extract the magnetization of these main scattering centers which does not resemble the Brillouin function for free spins 1/2, requiring to go beyond the paradigm of isolated paramagnetic spins. Besides, the onset of a nonmonotonic field dependence below about 2 K underlines the existence of another characteristic temperature scale, previously highlighted with other measurements, and sheds new light on the phase diagram of herbertsmithite down to the lowest temperatures.

Abstract:Sivan et al . claim that the methods used to distinguish thermal from hot carrier effects in our recent report are inaccurate and that our data can be explained by a purely thermal mechanism with a fixed activation energy. This conclusion is invalid, because they substantially misinterpret the emissivity of the photocatalyst and assume a linear intensity–dependent temperature in their model that is unrealistic.

Abstract:The accurate determination of electronic temperatures in metallic nanostructures is essential for many technological applications, like plasmon-enhanced catalysis or lithographic nanofabrication procedures. In this Letter we demonstrate that the electronic temperature can be accurately measured by the shape of the tunnel electroluminescence emission edge in tunnel plasmonic nanocavities, which follows a universal thermal distribution with the bias voltage as the chemical potential of the photon population. A significant deviation between electronic and lattice temperatures is found below 30 K for tunnel currents larger than 15 nA. This deviation is rationalized as the result of a two-electron process in which the second electron excites plasmon modes with an energy distribution that reflects the higher temperature following the first tunneling event. These results dispel a long-standing controversy on the nature of overbias emission in tunnel junctions and adds a new method for the determination of electronic temperatures and quasiparticle dynamics.

Going beyond Landauer scattering theory to describe spatially-resolved non-local heating and cooling in quantum thermoelectrics

Abstract:Spatially-resolved heating and cooling in nanostructures is nowadays measured with various nanoscale thermometry techniques, including scanning thermometry. Yet the most commonly used theory of nanoscale heating and thermoelectricity -- Landauer scattering theory -- is not appropriate to model such measurements. Hence, we analyze a minimal model of spatially-resolved heat transfer between electrons and phonons in simple thermoelectric nanostructures. This combines Landauer scattering formalism with a Boltzmann equation for transport, revealing the non-locality of Joule heating and Peltier cooling induced by a scatterer in a nanowire. The corresponding heating or cooling of the phonons is caused by the voltage drop at the scatterer, but is often maximal at a certain distance from the scatterer. This distance is of the order of the electron-phonon scattering length. Scanning thermal microscopy, such as SQUID-on-tip thermometers, should detect this non-locality as phonon hot spots and cold spots, spatially separated from the scatterer. We provide physical arguments explaining the thermoelectric response of the combined system of wire and scatterer, and in particular, why the resulting heating and cooling is sometimes the opposite to that predicted by the standard Landauer scattering theory.

Abstract:In this study, we explore the magnetothermoelectric power (MTP) of ZrTe5 , a canonical Dirac semimetal, through a photothermal technique. Unlike conventional thermoelectric studies that rely on on-chip heaters and are limited by fabrication processes, especially for stress-sensitive materials, our approach utilizes photothermal effects to induce temperature gradients. Our experiments, applying a magnetic field approximately parallel and transverse to the photocurrent detection direction, reveal that the photothermal method efficiently and reliably extracts both diagonal and off-diagonal components of the thermoelectric coefficient of ZrTe5 . We observe that the longitudinal MTP reproduces features previously reported in thermal transport studies, while the photoinduced transverse MTP confirms the anomalous Nernst effect. Abstract:In a recent Letter by Romanenko et al., the authors used low-energy muon spin rotation (LE-$\mu$SR) to measure the Meissner screening profile in cutouts from Nb superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities, systematically comparing how different surface treatments affect the screening properties of the elemental type-II superconductor. They reported a "strong" modification to the character of the screening profile upon mild baking at 120 $^{\circ}$C for 48 h, which was interpreted as a depth-dependent carrier mean-free-path resulting from a "gradient in vacancy concentration" near the surface. While this observation led to speculation that this surface treatment yields an "effective" superconducting bilayer, we suggest that its likeness to such is accidental and that the behavior is an artifact from the analysis.

Abstract:We report first-principles calculations of local heating in nanoscale junctions formed by a single molecule and a gold point contact. Due to a larger heat dissipation, the single molecule heats up less than the gold point contact. We also find, at zero temperature, a threshold bias $V_{onset}$ of about 6 mV and 11 mV for the molecule and the point contact, respectively, is required to excite the smallest vibrational mode and generate heat. The latter estimate is in very good agreement with recent experimental results on the same system. At a given external bias $V$ below $V_{onset}$, heating becomes noticeable when the background temperature is on the order of $\sim e(V_{onset}-V)/k_{B}$. Above $V_{onset}$, local heating increases dramatically with increasing bias but is also considerably suppressed by thermal dissipation into the electrodes. The results provide a microscopic picture of current-induced heat generation in atomic-scale structures.

Abstract:Because of the nonequilibrium nature of thermal effects at the nanoscale, the characterization of local thermal effects within a single molecule is highly challenging. Here, we demonstrate a way to characterize the local thermal properties of a single fullerene (C 60 ) molecule during current-induced heating processes through tip-enhanced anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy. Although the measured vibron populations are far from equilibrium with the environment, we can still define an "effective temperature ( T eff )" statistically via a Bose-Einstein distribution, suggesting a local equilibrium within the molecule. With increased current heating, T eff is found to rise up to about 1150 K until the C 60 cage is decomposed. Such a decomposition temperature is similar to that reported for ensemble C 60 samples, thus justifying the validity of our methodology. Moreover, the possible reaction pathway and product can be identified because of the chemical sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy. Our findings provide a practical method for noninvasively detecting the local heating effect inside a single molecule under nonequilibrium conditions.

Abstract:Graphene/hBN/graphene tunnel devices offer promise as sensitive mid-infrared photodetectors but the microscopic origin underlying the photoresponse in them remains elusive. In this work, we investigated the photocurrent generation in graphene/hBN/graphene tunnel structures with localized defect states under mid-IR illumination. We demonstrate that the photocurrent in these devices is proportional to the second derivative of the tunnel current with respect to the bias voltage, peaking during tunneling through the hBN impurity level. We revealed that the origin of the photocurrent generation lies in the change of the tunneling probability upon radiation-induced electron heating in graphene layers, in agreement with the theoretical model that we developed. Finally, we show that at a finite bias voltage, the photocurrent is proportional to either of the graphene layers heating under the illumination, while at zero bias, it is proportional to the heating difference. Thus, the photocurrent in such devices can be used for accurate measurements of the electronic temperature, providing a convenient alternative to Johnson noise thermometry.
