Abstract:We investigate the entanglement swapping of non-Gaussian states, including squeezed number states, two-mode photon-added states, and two-mode photon-subtracted squeezed states and analyze the entanglement of the swapped states by adopting logarithmic negativity as the measure of entanglement. Furthermore, we examine the fidelity of teleportation protocols for different input states where the swapped states serve as the quantum channel. All these results are compared with that obtained in the case of Gaussian two-mode squeezed vacuum.

Abstract:We describe an entanglement purification protocol to generate maximally entangled states with high efficiencies from two-mode squeezed states or from mixed Gaussian continuous entangled states. The protocol relies on a local quantum non-demolition measurement of the total excitation number of several continuous variable entangled pairs. We propose an optical scheme to do this kind of measurement using cavity enhanced cross--Kerr interactions.

Abstract:Non-Gaussian entangled states play a crucial role in harnessing quantum advantage in continuous-variable quantum information. However, how to fully characterize N-partite (N > 3) non-Gaussian entanglement without quantum state tomography remains elusive, leading to a very limited understanding of the underlying entanglement mechanism. Here, we propose several necessary and sufficient conditions for the positive-partial-transposition separability of multimode nonlinear quantum states resulting from high-order Hamiltonians and successive beam splitting operations. When applied to the initial state, the beam-splitter operations induce the emergence of different types of entanglement mechanisms, including pairwise high-order entanglement, collective high-order entanglement and the crossover between the two. We show numerically that for the four-mode scenario, the threshold for the existence of entanglement for any bipartition does not exceed the entanglement of the original state at fixed high-order moments. These results provide a new perspective for understanding multipartite nonlinear entanglement and will promote their application in quantum information processing.

Abstract:We present a novel approach to the separability problem for Gaussian quantum states of bosonic continuous variable systems. We derive a simplified necessary and sufficient separability criterion for arbitrary Gaussian states of $m$ vs $n$ modes, which relies on convex optimisation over marginal covariance matrices on one subsystem only. We further revisit the currently known results stating the equivalence between separability and positive partial transposition (PPT) for specific classes of Gaussian states. Using matrix analysis techniques such as Schur complements and matrix means, we provide a unified treatment and compact proofs of all these results. In particular, we recover the PPT-separability equivalence for: (i) Gaussian states of $1$ vs $n$ modes; and (ii) isotropic Gaussian states. In passing, we also retrieve (iii) the recently established equivalence between separability of a Gaussian state and and its complete Gaussian extendability. Our techniques are then applied to progress beyond the state of the art. We show that: (iv) Gaussian states that are invariant under partial transposition are necessarily separable; (v) the PPT criterion is necessary and sufficient for separability for Gaussian states of $m$ vs $n$ modes that are symmetric under the exchange of any two modes belonging to one of the parties; and (vi) Gaussian states which remain PPT under passive optical operations can not be entangled by them either. This is not a foregone conclusion per se (since Gaussian bound entangled states do exist) and settles a question that had been left unanswered in the existing literature on the subject. This paper, enjoyable by both the quantum optics and the matrix analysis communities, overall delivers technical and conceptual advances which are likely to be useful for further applications in continuous variable quantum information theory, beyond the separability problem.

Abstract:In this article we review properties of Gaussian states and describe operations on them. The interaction of the electromagnetic field with an absorbing dielectric as a special type of environmental interaction will serve as the basis for the understanding of decoherence and entanglement degradation of Gaussian states of light propagating through fibers. The main part of the article is devoted to the study of quantum teleportation in noisy environments. Special emphasis is put onto the question of choosing the correct displacement on the receiver's side.

Abstract:Based on total variance of a pair of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) type operators, the generalized EPR entangled states in continuous variable systems are defined. We show that such entangled states must correspond with two-mode squeezing states whether these states are Gaussian or not and whether they are pure or not. With help of the relation between the total variance and the entanglement, the degree of such entanglement is also defined. Through analyzing some specific cases, we see that this method is very convenient and easy in practical application. In addition, an entangled state with no squeezing is studied, which reveals that there certainly exist something unknown about entanglement in continuous variable systems.
Genuine non-Gaussian entanglement: quantum correlations beyond Hong-Ou-Mandel

Abstract:Hong-Ou-Mandel effect is an important demonstration of particle indistinguishability, when identical single photons interfere at a beamsplitter to generate the two-photon entangled NOON state. On the other hand, NOON states with $N\ge3$ photons have long been conjectured beyond the deterministic generation of photon interference. To characterize the separation, we introduce the notion of genuine non-Gaussian entanglement (NGE), which cannot be generated via a generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment, with Gaussian protocols extending the beamsplitter and separable input states replacing the single photons. We establish a resource theory to characterize such quantum correlations beyond Hong-Ou-Mandel and prove that NOON states with $N\ge 3$ are indeed among the NGE class. With the generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel protocol as free operations, we introduce two monotones to characterize genuine non-Gaussian entanglement: one derived from the entanglement entropy and the other from the minimal extension size required to convert a state into a free state. Finally, we demonstrate that the tomography process of pure free states can be performed efficiently, while all learning protocols of states with genuine non-Gaussian entanglement require exponential overheads connected to the monotone. This implies that states generated in Boson sampling are efficiently learnable despite its measurement statistics being hard to sample from.

Abstract:Quantification of nonclassicality and entanglement in a quantum state is crucial for quantum advantage in information processing and computation. Robustness is one of the tractable measures for quantifying quantum resources. Gaussian states are important in continuous variable quantum information for their theoretically simple and experimentally easily accessible. We provide the method of how to calculate the robustness of nonclassicality and enatnglement for Gaussian states. The robustness of nonclassicality or entanglement is demonstrated analytically for one-mode, two-mode Gaussain states and multimode symmetric Gaussian states, the result shows a clear physical meaning for the origin of nonclassicality and entanglement. For squeezed thermal states, the nonclassicality is equal to the entanglement for the two-mode case, while they are far apart for multimode cases.

Abstract:We investigate the continuous-variable entanglement swapping protocol in a non-Gaussian setting, with non- Gaussian states employed either as entangled inputs and/or as swapping resources. The quality of the swapping protocol is assessed in terms of the teleportation fidelity achievable when using the swapped states as shared entangled resources in a teleportation protocol. We thus introduce a two-step cascaded quantum communication scheme that includes a swapping protocol followed by a teleportation protocol. The swapping protocol is fed by a general class of tunable non-Gaussian states, the squeezed Bell states, which, by means of controllable free parameters, allows for a continuous morphing from Gaussian twin beams up to maximally non-Gaussian squeezed number states. In the realistic instance, taking into account the effects of losses and imperfections, we show that as the input two-mode squeezing increases, optimized non-Gaussian swapping resources allow for a monotonically increasing enhancement of the fidelity compared to the corresponding Gaussian setting. This result implies that the use of non-Gaussian resources is necessary to guarantee the success of continuous-variable entanglement swapping in the presence of decoherence.

Abstract:Entanglement, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox and Bell’s failure of local-hiddenvariable (LHV) theories are three historically famous forms of “quantum nonlocality”. We give experimental criteria for these three forms of nonlocality in multi-particle systems, with the aim of better understanding the transition from microscopic to macroscopic nonlocality. We examine the nonlocality of N separated spin J systems. First, we obtain multipartite Bell inequalities that address the correlation between spin values measured at each site, and then we review spin squeezing inequalities that address the degree of reduction in the variance of collective spins. The latter have been particularly useful as a tool for investigating entanglement in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). We present solutions for two topical quantum states: multi-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states, and the ground state of a two-well BEC.

Abstract:Summary form only given. One of the key elements of quantum communication is the generation of maximally entangled states between distant nodes of a quantum network. We present an entanglement purification scheme which generates maximally entangled states in finite Hilbert spaces from the continuous two-mode squeezed states. With high probabilities, we get a more entangled stale, and the entanglement in the continuous partially entangled state is transferred to the maximally entangled states with high efficiency. Furthermore, in several practical cases this purification protocol can be readily extended to distill maximally entangled states from the mixed Gaussian continuous states.

Abstract:We present a very brief overview of entanglement swapping as it relates to continuous-variable quantum information. The technical background required is discussed and the natural link to quantum teleportation is established before discussing the nature of Gaussian entanglement swapping. The limitations of Gaussian swapping are introduced, along with the general applications of swapping in the context of to quantum communication and entanglement distribution. In light of this, we briefly summarize a collection of entanglement swapping schemes which incorporate a non-Gaussian ingredient and the benefits of such schemes are noted. Finally, we motivate the need to further study and develop such schemes by highlighting requirements of a continuous-variable repeater.

Bipartite Entanglement in Continuous-Variable Cluster States

Abstract:We present a study of the entanglement properties of Gaussian cluster states, proposed as a universal resource for continuous-variable quantum computing. A central aim is to compare mathematically-idealized cluster states defined using quadrature eigenstates, which have infinite squeezing and cannot exist in nature, with Gaussian approximations which are experimentally accessible. Adopting widely-used definitions, we first review the key concepts, by analysing a process of teleportation along a continuous-variable quantum wire in the language of matrix product states. Next we consider the bipartite entanglement properties of the wire, providing analytic results. We proceed to grid cluster states, which are universal for the qubit case. To extend our analysis of the bipartite entanglement, we adopt the entropic-entanglement width, a specialized entanglement measure introduced recently by Van den Nest M et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 150504 (2006), adapting their definition to the continuous-variable context. Finally we add the effects of photonic loss, extending our arguments to mixed states. Cumulatively our results point to key differences in the properties of idealized and Gaussian cluster states. Even modest loss rates are found to strongly limit the amount of entanglement. We discuss the implications for the potential of continuous-variable analogues of measurement-based quantum computation.

Revealing Nonclassicality Beyond Gaussian States Via A Single Marginal Distribution

Abstract:A standard method to obtain information on a quantum state is to measure marginal distributions along many different axes in phase space, which forms a basis of quantum-state tomography. We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a general framework to manifest nonclassicality by observing a single marginal distribution only, which provides a unique insight into nonclassicality and a practical applicability to various quantum systems. Our approach maps the 1D marginal distribution into a factorized 2D distribution by multiplying the measured distribution or the vacuum-state distribution along an orthogonal axis. The resulting fictitious Wigner function becomes unphysical only for a nonclassical state; thus the negativity of the corresponding density operator provides evidence of nonclassicality. Furthermore, the negativity measured this way yields a lower bound for entanglement potential-a measure of entanglement generated using a nonclassical state with a beam-splitter setting that is a prototypical model to produce continuous-variable (CV) entangled states. Our approach detects both Gaussian and non-Gaussian nonclassical states in a reliable and efficient manner. Remarkably, it works regardless of measurement axis for all non-Gaussian states in finite-dimensional Fock space of any size, also extending to infinite-dimensional states of experimental relevance for CV quantum informatics. We experimentally illustrate the power of our criterion for motional states of a trapped ion, confirming their nonclassicality in a measurement-axis-independent manner. We also address an extension of our approach combined with phase-shift operations, which leads to a stronger test of nonclassicality, that is, detection of genuine non-Gaussianity under a CV measurement.
Genuine multipartite entanglement of symmmetric Gaussian states: Strong monogamy, unitary localization, scaling behavior, and molecular sharing structure

Abstract:We investigate the structural aspects of genuine multipartite entanglement in Gaussian states of continuous variable systems. Generalizing the results of [Adesso & Illuminati, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 150501 (2007)], we analyze whether the entanglement shared by blocks of modes distributes according to a strong monogamy law. This property, once established, allows to quantify genuine N-partite entanglement in terms of the "residual contangle" not encoded into 2,...,K,...,(N-1)-partite quantum correlations. The explicit expression of this entanglement measure is derived, by a recursive formula, for a subclass of Gaussian states. These are fully symmetric (permutation-invariant) states multi-partitioned into blocks, each consisting of an arbitrary number of modes. We compute the genuine multipartite entanglement shared by the blocks ("molecules") and investigate its scaling properties with the number and size of the molecules, the total number of modes, the global mixedness of the state, and the squeezed resources. To achieve the exact computation we prove a general result of symplectic analysis: Correlations among K molecules in N-mode multi-symmetric Gaussian states can be transformed by a local unitary operation into correlations shared by K single modes, one per molecule, in effective non-symmetric states. Due to this theorem, the above results extend to the subclass of non-symmetric Gaussian states that are obtained by unitarily localizing the multipartite molecular entanglement of symmetric states. These findings provide evidence that distributed Gaussian entanglement is strongly monogamous even beyond specific symmetry constraints, and that the residual contangle is a bona fide measure of genuine multipartite entanglement for permutation-invariant Gaussian states under any multi-partition of the modes.

Abstract:We analytically exploit the two-mode Gaussian states nonunitary dynamics. We show that in the zero temperature limit, entanglement sudden death (ESD) will always occur for symmetric states (where initial single mode compression is $z_0$) provided the two mode squeezing $r_0$ satisfies $0 < r_0 < 1/2 \log (\cosh (2 z_0)).$ We also give the analytical expressions for the time of ESD. Finally, we show the relation between the single modes initial impurities and the initial entanglement, where we exhibit that the later is suppressed by the former.

Abstract:We show that all entangled Gaussian states of two infinite dimensional systems can be distilled to maximally entangled states in finite dimensions. The distillation protocol involves local squeezing operations, local homodyne measurements with ancilla systems prepared in coherent states as well as local joint measurements of the total number operator of two copies of the state.

Abstract:We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for arbitrary multi--mode (pure or mixed) Gaussian states to be equivalent under Gaussian local unitary operations. To do so, we introduce a standard form for Gaussian states, which has the properties that (i) every state can be transformed into its standard form via Gaussian local unitaries and (ii) it is unique and (iii) it can be easily computed. Thus, two states are equivalent under Gaussian local unitaries iff their standard form coincides. We explicitly derive the standard form for two-- and three--mode Gaussian pure states. We then investigate transformations between these classes by means of Gaussian local operations assisted by classical communication. For three-mode pure states, we identify a global property that cannot be created but only destroyed by local operations. This implies that the highly entangled family of symmetric three--mode Gaussian states is not sufficient to generated all three-mode Gaussian states by local Gaussian operations.

Abstract:We explore the entanglement features of pure symmetric N-qubit states characterized by N-distinct spinors with a particular focus on the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger(GHZ) states and WWbar, an equal superposition of W and obverse W states. Along with a comparison of pairwise entanglement and monogamy properties, we explore the geometric information contained in them by constructing their canonical steering ellipsoids. We obtain the volume monogamy relations satisfied by WWbar states as a function of number of qubits and compare with the maximal monogamy property of GHZ states.
