Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:It is clear that every rational surgery on a Hopf link in $3$-sphere is a lens space surgery. In this note we give an explicit computation which lens space is a resulting manifold. The main tool we use is the calculus of continued fractions. As a corollary, we recover the (well known) result on the criterion for when rational surgery on a Hopf link gives the $3$-sphere.

Abstract:We present three large families of new examples of plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology 4-balls. These are constructed using two operations, also defined here, that preserve an algebraic obstruction to bounding rational homology balls. Apart from in the cases shown in this paper, it remains open whether these operations are rational homology cobordisms in general. The families of new examples include a multitude of families of rational surgeries on torus knots, and we explicitly describe which positive torus knots we now know to have a surgery that bounds a rational homology ball. While not the focus of this paper, we implicitly confirm the slice-ribbon conjecture for new, more complicated, examples of arborescent knots, including many Montesinos knots.

Abstract:We give an estimate for Manolescu's $\kappa$-invariant of a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ by the data of a spin 4-orbifold bounded by $Y$. By an appropriate choice of a 4-orbifold, sometimes we can restrict and determine the value of $\kappa$. We give such examples in case of Dehn surgeries along knots in $S^3$.

Abstract:We define relative Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a general gluing theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves for symplectic cutting and contact surgery. Then, we use our general gluing theory to study the change of GW-invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds tranform under flops and extremal transitions. We prove a complete formula for the change of GW-invariants of any genus transform under flop and a general type I extremal transition. Other extremal transition will be handled in a subsequent paper.

Abstract:Motivated by Akbulut-Larson's construction of Brieskorn spheres bounding rational homology 4-balls, we explore plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles and use them to construct infinite families of rational homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls. Some of these rational homology 3-spheres are new examples of integer homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls, but do not bound integer homology 4-balls (i.e. nontrivial elements of <math>ker(ΘZ3→ΘQ3)</math>). In particular, we find infinite families of torus bundles over the circle that bound rational homology circles, provide a simple method for constructing more general plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles, and show that, for example, −1-surgery along any unknotting number one knot K with a positive crossing that can be switched to unknot K bounds a rational homology 4-ball.

Abstract:The Cyclic Surgery Theorem and Moser's work on surgeries on torus knots imply that for any non-trivial knot in $S^3$, there are at most two integer surgeries that produce a lens space. This paper investigates how many positive integer surgeries on a given knot in $S^3$ can produce a manifold rational homology cobordant to a lens space. Tools include Greene and McCoy's work on changemaker lattices which come from Heegaard Floer $d$-invariants, and Aceto-Celoria-Park's work on rational cobordisms and integral homology which is based on Lisca's work on lens spaces.

Abstract:For a nullhomologous Legendrian knot in a closed contact 3-manifold Y we consider a contact structure obtained by positive rational contact surgery. We prove that in this situation the Heegaard Floer contact invariant of Y is mapped by a surgery cobordism to the contact invariant of the result of contact surgery. In addition we characterize the spin-c structure on the cobordism that induces the relevant map. As a consequence we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the nonvanishing of the contact invariant after rational surgery when Y is the standard 3-sphere, generalizing previous results of Lisca-Stipsicz and Golla. In fact our methods allow direct calculation of the contact invariant in terms of the rational surgery mapping cone of Ozsváth and Szabó. The proof involves a construction called reducible open book surgery, which reduces in special cases to the capping-off construction studied by Baldwin.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that rational homology 3-spheres are ubiquitous from the viewpoint of Heegaard splitting. Let M = H+ Up H- be a genus g Heegaard splitting of a closed 3-manifold and c be a simple closed curve in F. Then there is a 3-manifold M-c which is obtained from M by horizontal Dehn surgery along c. We show that for c such that the homology class [c] is generic in the set of curve-represented homology classes H-s subset of H-1 (F), rank(H-1(M-c,Q)) < max{1, rank(H-1(M, Q)}. As a corollary, for a set of curves {c(1), c(2),..., c(m)}, m >= g, such that each [c(i)] is generic in H-s subset of H-1 (F), M(c(1), c(2),..., c(m)) is a rational homology 3-sphere
On chain link surgeries bounding rational homology balls and $χ$-slice 3-braid closures

Abstract:We determine which integral surgeries on a large class of circular chain links bound rational homology balls. Our key tool is the lattice-theoretic cubiquity obstruction recently developed by Greene and Owens. We discuss a practical method of computing it, and, as an application, prove that a generalisation of the slice--ribbon conjecture holds for all but one infinite family of quasi-alternating 3-braid links. This extends previous results of Lisca concerning the conjecture for 3-braid knots.

Abstract:It is known that every oriented integral homology 3-sphere can be obtained from S^3 by a finite sequence of Borromean surgeries. We give an explicit formula for the variation of the Casson invariant under such a surgery move. The formula involves simple classical invariants, namely the framing, linking number and Milnor's triple linking number. A more general statement, for n independent Borromean surgeries, is also provided, which involves an additional cubic expression in some linking numbers of the surgery link.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a non-trivial knot in $S^3$, and let $r$ and $r'$ be two distinct rational numbers of same sign, allowing $r$ to be infinite; we prove that there is no orientation-preserving homeomorphism between the manifolds $S^3_r(K)$ and $S^3_{r'}(K)$. We further generalize this uniqueness result to knots in arbitrary integral homology L-spaces.

Abstract:Given an $n$-component link $L$ in any 3-manifold $M$, the space $\mathcal{L} \subset (\mathbb{Q}\cup \mkern-1.5mu\{\infty\})^n$ of rational surgery slopes yielding L-spaces is already fully characterized (in joint work by the author) when $n\!=\!1$ and $\mathcal{L}$ is nontrivial. For $n\mkern-2mu>\mkern-3mu1$, however, there are no previous results for $\mathcal{L}$ as a rational subspace, and only limited results for integer surgeries $\mathcal{L}\cap\mathbb{Z}^n$ on $S^3\mkern-2mu$. Herein, we provide the first nontrivial explicit descriptions of $\mathcal{L}$ for rational surgeries on multi-component links. Generalizing Hedden's and Hom's L-space result for cables, we compute both $\mathcal{L}$, and its topology, for all satellites by torus-links in $S^3\mkern-2mu$. For fractal-boundaried $\mathcal{L}$ resulting from satellites by algebraic links or iterated torus links, we develop arbitrarily precise approximation tools. We also extend the provisional validity of the L-space conjecture for rational surgeries on a knot $K \subset S^3$ to rational surgeries on such satellite-links of $K$. These results exploit the author's generalized Jankins-Neumann formula for graph manifolds.

Abstract:We investigate rational homology cobordisms of 3-manifolds with non-zero first Betti number. This is motivated by the natural generalization of the slice-ribbon conjecture to multicomponent links. In particular we consider the problem of which rational homology $S^1\times S^2$'s bound rational homology $S^1\times D^3$'s. We give a simple procedure to construct rational homology cobordisms between plumbed 3-manifold. We introduce a family F of plumbed 3-manifolds with first Betti number equal to 1. By adapting an obstruction based on Donaldson's diagonalization theorem we characterize all manifolds in F that bound rational homology $S^1\times D^3$'s. For all these manifolds a rational homology cobordism to $S^1\times S^2$ can be constructed via our procedure. The family F is large enough to include all Seifert fibered spaces over the 2-sphere with vanishing Euler invariant. In a subsequent paper we describe applications to arborescent link concordance.
Spectral invariants and equivariant monopole Floer homology for rational homology three-spheres

Abstract:In this paper, we study a model for $S^1$-equivariant monopole Floer homology for rational homology three-spheres via a homological device called $\mathcal{S}$-complex. Using the Chern-Simons-Dirac functional, we define an $\mathbf{R}$-filtration on the (equivariant) complex of monopole Floer homology $HM$. This $\mathbf{R}$-filtration fits $HM$ into a persistent homology theory, from which one can define a numerical quantity called the spectral invariant $\rho$. The spectral invariant $\rho$ is tied with the geometry of the underlying manifold. The main result of the papers shows that $\rho$ provides an obstruction to the existence of positive scalar curvature metric on a ribbon homology cobordism.

Abstract:We show rational homological stability for the homotopy automorphisms and block diffeomorphims of iterated connected sums of products of spheres. The spheres can have different dimension, but need to satisfy a certain connectivity assumption. The main theorems of this paper extend homological stability results for automorphism spaces of connected sums of products of spheres of the same dimension by Berglund and Madsen.

Abstract:For each $m\geq0$ and any prime $p\equiv3\ \mathrm{(mod \ 4)}$, we construct strongly chiral rational homology $(4m+3)$-spheres, which have real hyperbolic fundamental groups and only non-zero integral intermediate homology groups isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_{2p}$ in degrees $1,2m+1$ and $4m+1$. This gives group theoretic analogues in high dimensions of the existence of strongly chiral hyperbolic rational homology $3$-spheres, as well as of the existence of strongly chiral hyperbolic manifolds of any dimension that are not rational homology spheres, which was shown by Weinberger. One of our tools will be $r$-spins. We thus investigate the relationship between the sets of degrees of self-maps of a given manifold and its $r$-spins, and give classes of manifolds for which the sets are equal.

The proof requires a result of Dymara on loose Legendrian knots and Eliashberg's classification of overtwisted contact structures on 3-manifolds.

We also recompute the rational cohomology ring of \bar S_2, the moduli space of spin curves of genus 2, thereby correcting some errors made in an article by G. Bini and C.
