Abstract:Let M 2 be a compact Willmore surface in the (2 + p )-dimensional unit sphere S 2 + p . Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form of M 2 , respectively. Set ρ 2 = S −2 H 2 . In this note, we proved that there exists a universal positive constant C , such that if ∥ ρ 2 ∥ 2 < C , then ρ 2 =0 and M 2 is a totally umbilical sphere.

Abstract:The localization technique has been proved to be a useful tool in studying the Gromov-Witten invariants as was shown in the proof of the MarinoVafa formula and a new proof of the Witten conjecture/Kontsevich theorem. Especially when applied to the relative stable moduli, it allows us to express the Gromov-Witten invariants in terms of other invariants such as double Hurwitz numbers or another type of Gromov-Witten invariants. In this paper, we present a universal method to obtain recursion relations on the Gromov-Witten type invariants: let ω ∈ H∗(X) be any natural cohomology class on the target space X , we can determine the Gromov-Witten invariants ∫

Abstract:Inversive distance circle packing on surfaces was introduced by Bowers-Stephenson as a generalization of Thurston's circle packing and conjectured to be rigid. The infinitesimal and global rigidity of circle packing with nonnegative inversive distance were proved by Guo and Luo respectively. The author proved the global rigidity of circle packing with inversive distance in $(-1,+\infty)$. In this paper, we give a new variational proof of the Bowers-Stephenson conjecture for inversive distance in $(-1,+\infty)$, which simplifies the existing proofs and could be generalized to three dimensional case.

Rigidity of discrete conformal structures on surfaces

Abstract:In \cite{G3}, Glickenstein introduced the discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces in an axiomatic approach from Riemannian geometry perspective. Glickenstein's discrete conformal structures include Thurston's circle packings, Bowers-Stephenson's inversive distance circle packings and Luo's vertex scalings as special cases. Glickenstein \cite{G5} further conjectured the rigidity of the discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces. Glickenstein's conjecture includes Luo's conjecture on the rigidity of vertex scalings \cite{L1} and Bowers-Stephenson's conjecture on the rigidity of inversive distance circle packings \cite{BSt} as special cases. In this paper, we prove Glickenstein's conjecture using variational principles. This unifies and generalizes the well-known results of Luo \cite{L4} and Bobenko-Pinkall-Springborn \cite{BPS}. Our method provides a unified approach to similar problems. We further discuss the relationships of Glickenstein's discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces and $3$-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. As a result, we obtain some new results on the convexities of the co-volume functions of some generalized $3$-dimensional hyperbolic tetrahedra.

Abstract:Let (N, g) be an n-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold with nonempty boundary partial derivative N. Assume that the Ricci curvature of (N, g) has a negative lower bound Ric >= -(n-1)c(2) for some c> 0, and the mean curvature of the boundary partial derivative N satisfies H = -(n-1) c(0) > (n-1)c for some c(0) > c > 0. Then a known result (cf. [12]) says that sup(x is an element of N) d(x, partial derivative N) <= 1/c coth(-1) c(0)/c. In this paper, we prove the rigidity result that if N is compact, then the equality holds if and only if (N, g) is isometric to the geodesic ball of radius 1/c coth(-1) c(0)/c in an n-dimensional hyperbolic space H-n(-c(2)) of constant sectional curvature -c(2). Moreover, we prove an analogous result for manifold with m-Bakry- Emery Ricci curvature bounded below by a negative constant.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new proof for a well-known inequality, conjectured by Zassenhaus in 1947 and proved independently by Groemer in 1960 and Oler in 1961. The inequality gives an upper bound for the number of nonoverlapping unit discs whose centers can be packed into a compact convex region, and recently obtains a lot of applications in study of sensor networks.
On Gromov's rigidity theorem for polytopes with acute angles

Abstract:In his Four Lectures, Gromov conjectured a scalar curvature extremality property of convex polytopes. Moreover, Gromov outlined a proof of the conjecture in the special case when the dihedral angles are acute. Gromov's argument relies on Dirac operator techniques together with a smoothing construction. In this paper, we give the details of the smoothing construction, thereby providing a detailed proof of Gromov's theorem. The proof of the rigidity statement also uses a deep estimate due to Fefferman and Phong.

Profinite almost rigidity in 3-manifolds

Abstract:We prove that any compact, orientable 3-manifold with empty or incompressible toral boundary is profinitely almost rigid among all compact, orientable, boundary-incompressible 3-manifolds, i.e. the profinite completion of its fundamental group determines its homeomorphism type up to finitely many possibilities. Moreover, the profinite completion of the fundamental group of a mixed 3-manifold, together with the peripheral structure, uniquely determines the homeomorphism type of its Seifert part (i.e. the maximal graph manifold components in the JSJ-decomposition). On the other hand, without assigning the peripheral structure, the profinite completion of a mixed 3- manifold group may not even determine the fundamental group of its Seifert part. The proof is based on JSJ-decomposition.

Abstract:We develop a new approach to, and somewhat extend, results of Cheeger, Colding and Tian (Geom. Funct. Anal. 12 (2002) 873–914), which give restrictions on the singular sets that can arise as Gromov‐Hausdorff limits in the presence of integral bounds on the curvature. The foundation of this approach is provided by a rigidity result for flat singular spaces, which has independent interest.
Global Rigidity of Triangulated Manifolds

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is the graph of a connected triangulated $(d-1)$-manifold, for $d\geq 3$, then $G$ is generically globally rigid in $\mathbb R^d$ if and only if it is $(d+1)$-connected and, if $d=3$, $G$ is not planar. The special case $d=3$ verifies a conjecture of Connelly. Our results actually apply to a much larger class of simplicial complexes, namely the circuits of the simplicial matroid. We also give two significant applications of our main theorems. We show that that the characterisation of pseudomanifolds with extremal edge numbers given by the Lower Bound Theorem extends to circuits of the simplicial matroid. We also prove the generic case of a conjecture of Kalai concerning the reconstructability of a polytope from its space of stresses. The proofs of our main results adapt earlier ideas of Fogelsanger and Whiteley to the setting of global rigidity. In particular we verify a special case of Whiteley's vertex splitting conjecture for global rigidity.

Abstract:Recently Auckly-Kim-Melvin-Ruberman showed that for any finite subgroup G of SO(4) there exists a contractible 4-manifold with an effective G-action on its boundary so that the twists associated to the non-trivial elements of G do not extend to diffeomorphisms of the entire manifold. We use a Heegaard Floer theoretic argument originating in work of Akbulut-Karakurt to give a different proof of this phenomenon.

Rigidity Results for large displacement quotients of mapping class groups

Abstract:We consider quotients of mapping class groups of orientable, finite type surfaces by subgroups whose action on the curve graph has large displacement. This class includes quotients by the normal closure of a pseudo-Anosov element, the mapping class group itself, and in view of forthcoming work of Abbott, Berlyne, Ng, and Rasmussen, also random quotients. First, we show that every automorphism of the corresponding quotient of the curve graph is induced by a mapping class, thus generalising Ivanov's Theorem about automorphisms of the curve graph. Then we use this to prove quasi-isometric rigidity under additional assumptions, satisfied by all aforementioned quotients. In the process, we clarify a proof of quasi-isometric rigidity of mapping class groups by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto. Finally, we show that the outer automorphisms groups of our quotients, as well as their abstract commensurators, are "the smallest possible".

Profinite rigidity witnessed by Dehn fillings of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:Any profinite isomorphism between two cusped finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds carries profinite isomorphisms between their Dehn fillings. With this observation, we prove that some cusped finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds are profinitely rigid among all compact, orientable 3-manifolds, through detecting their exceptional Dehn fillings. In addition, we improved a criteria for profinite rigidity of a hyperbolic knot complement or a hyperbolic-type satellite knot complement among compact, orientable 3-manifolds, through examining its characterising slopes. We obtain the following profinitely rigid examples: the complement of the Whitehead link, Whitehead sister link, $\frac{3}{10}$ two-bridge link; specific surgeries on one component of these links; the complement of (full) twist knots $\mathcal{K}_n$, Eudave-Muñoz knots $K(3,1,n,0)$, Pretzel knots $P(-3,3,2n+1)$, $5_2$ knot; the Berge manifold, and many more.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed submanifold with parallel mean curvature in Sn+p, (h) over tilde, it the trace free part of the second fundamental form, and (sigma) over tilde (u) = parallel to(h) over tilde (u, u)parallel to(2) for any unit vector u is an element of TM. We prove that there exists a positive constant C(n, p, H) (>= 1/3) such that if (sigma) over tilde (u) <= C(n. p, H), then either (sigma) over tilde (u) equivalent to 0 and M is a totally umbilical sphere, or (sigma) over tilde (u) equivalent to C(n, p, H). A geometrical classification of closed submanifolds with parallel mean curvature satisfying (sigma) over tilde (u) equivalent to C(n, p, H) is also given. Our main result is an extension of the Gauchman theorem [4].

Abstract:We prove a vanishing theorem for the fundamental group of a compact submanifold in a space form, and then present a refined version of Ejiri's rigidity theorem for minimal submanifolds in a sphere. Inspired by the refined Ejiri theorem, we verify a new differentiable sphere theorem for compact submanifolds in space forms. We also show that our differentiable sphere theorem is sharp. We emphasize that our method of Ricci flow in the proof of the sphere theorem seems useful in the study of curvature and topology. Also, we obtain a differentiable pinching theorem for compact submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold.
