Abstract:New images of 7 radio halos and relics, obtained with the Very Large Array at 20 or 90 cm, are presented here. The existence of a cluster-wide radio halo in the clusters A 665 and CL 0016+16 is confirmed. Both these clusters share the properties of the other clusters with radio halos, i.e. are luminous in X-rays, have high temperature, and show recent merger processes. No diffuse sources are detected in a sample of clusters showing at least a tailed radio galaxy within 300 kpc from the cluster center, indicating that the connection between tailed radio galaxies and halos is not relevant. For these clusters we give limits to the surface brightness and to the angular size of possible undetected diffuse sources.

We find evidence that the frequency of clusters with halos and relics is larger in clusters with high X-ray luminosity. Abstract:Deep Very Large Array radio observations confirm the presence of halo and relic sources in six clusters of galaxies (A115, A520, A773, A1664, A2254, A2744) where a wide diffuse emission was previously found in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. New images at 1.4 GHz of these six clusters of galaxies are presented and X-ray data obtained from the ROSAT archive are analyzed. The properties of clusters hosting radio halos and relics are analyzed and discussed. A correlation between the halo radio power and the cluster gravitational mass is presented.

Abstract:We present the first results of the search of new halo and relic candidates in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. We have inspected a sample of 205 clusters from the X-ray-brightest Abell-type clusters presented by Ebeling et al (1996), and found 29 candidates. Out of them, 11 clusters are already known from the literature to contain a diffuse cluster-wide source, while in 18 clusters this is the first indication of the existence of this type of sources. We classify these sources as halos or relics according to their location in the cluster center or periphery, respectively. We find that the occurrence of cluster halos and relics is higher in clusters with high X-ray luminosity and high temperature. We also confirm the correlation between the absence of a cooling flow and the presence of a radio halo at the cluster center.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to analyse the radio properties of the massive and dynamical disturbed clusters Abell 1451 and Zwcl 0634.1+4750, especially focusing on the possible presence of diffuse emission. We present new GMRT 320 MHz and JVLA 1.5 GHz observations of these two clusters. We found that both Abell 1451 and Zwcl 0634.1+4750 host a radio halo with a typical spectrum ($\alpha\sim1-1.3$). Similarly to a few other cases reported in the recent literature, these radio halos are significantly fainter in radio luminosity with respect to the current radio power-mass correlations and they are smaller than classical giant radio halos. These underluminous sources might contribute to shed light on the complex mechanisms of formation and evolution of radio halos. Furthermore, we detected a candidate radio relic at large distance from the cluster center in Abell 1451 and a peculiar head tail radio galaxy in Zwcl 0634.1+4750, which might be interacting with a shock front.

Abstract:In this paper we review the observational results on Relic radio sources in clusters of galaxies. We discuss their observational properties, structures and radio spectra. We will show that Relics can be divided according to their size, morphology, and location in the galaxy cluster. These differences could be related to physical properties of Relic sources. The comparison with cluster conditions suggests that Relics could be related to shock waves originated by cluster mergers.

A giant radio halo in the low luminosity X-ray cluster Abell 523

Abstract:Radio halos are extended and diffuse non-thermal radio sources present at the cluster center, not obviously associated with any individual galaxy. A strong correlation has been found between the cluster X-ray luminosity and the halo radio power. We observe and analyze the diffuse radio emission present in the complex merging structure Abell 523, classified as a low luminosity X-ray cluster, to discuss its properties in the context of the halo total radio power versus X-ray luminosity correlation. We reduced VLA archive observations at 1.4 GHz to derive a deep radio image of the diffuse emission, and compared radio, optical, and X-ray data. Low-resolution VLA images detect a giant radio halo associated with a complex merging region. The properties of this new halo agree with those of radio halos in general discussed in the literature, but its radio power is about a factor of ten higher than expected on the basis of the cluster X-ray luminosity. Our study of this giant radio source demonstrates that radio halos can also be present in clusters with a low X-ray luminosity. Only a few similar cases have so far been found . This result suggests that this source represent a new class of objects, that cannot be explained by classical radio halo models. We suggest that the particle reacceleration related to merging processes is very efficient and/or the X-ray luminosity is not a good indicator of the past merging activity of a cluster.

Abstract:The number of diffuse radio halos in clusters of galaxies has grown in recent years, making it possible to derive statistical properties of these sources and of the hosting clusters. We show that diffuse sources are associated with X-ray luminous clusters which have undergone recent merger processes. The radio and X-ray structures are often similar, and correlations are found between radio and X-ray parameters. A model for the formation and maintenance of these sources is suggested, including a first phase of relativistic particle injection by past major merger events, starbust and AGN activity and a second phase of reacceleration by the energy supplied from shocks and turbulence in a recent merger event.

Abstract:We present LOw Frequency ARray observations of the Coma Cluster field at 144 MHz. The cluster hosts one of the most famous radio halos, a relic, and a low surface brightness bridge. We detect new features that allow us to make a step forward in the understanding of particle acceleration in clusters. The radio halo extends for more than 2 Mpc, which is the largest extent ever reported. To the northeast of the cluster, beyond the Coma virial radius, we discover an arc-like radio source that could trace particles accelerated by an accretion shock. To the west of the halo, coincident with a shock detected in the X-rays, we confirm the presence of a radio front, with different spectral properties with respect to the rest of the halo. We detect a radial steepening of the radio halo spectral index between 144 and 342 MHz, at ∼30′ from the cluster center, that may indicate a non-constant re-acceleration time throughout the volume. We also detect a mild steepening of the spectral index toward the cluster center. For the first time, a radial change in the slope of the radio–X-ray correlation is found, and we show that such a change could indicate an increasing fraction of cosmic-ray versus thermal energy density in the cluster outskirts. Finally, we investigate the origin of the emission between the relic and the source NGC 4789, and we argue that NGC 4789 could have crossed the shock originating the radio emission visible between its tail and the relic.

Abstract:Synchrotron radio emission is being detected from an increasing number of galaxy clusters. Spectral index images are a powerful tool to investigate the origin, nature, and connection of these sources with the dynamical state of the cluster. The aim of this work is to investigate the spectral index distribution of the radio halo in the galaxy cluster A520, a complex system from an optical, radio, and X-ray point of view. We present deep Very Large Array observations in total intensity at 325 and 1400 MHz. We produced and analyzed spectral index images of the radio halo in this frequency range at a resolution of 39" and 60" and looked for possible correlations with the thermal properties of the cluster. We find an integrated radio halo spectral index alpha(325-1400) ~ 1.12. No strong radial steepening is present and the spectral index distribution is intrinsically complex with fluctuations only partially due to measurement errors. The radio halo integrated spectral index and the cluster temperature follow the global trend observed in other galaxy clusters although a strong point-to-point correlation between the spectral index and the thermal gas temperature has not been observed. The complex morphology in the spectral index image of the radio halo in A520 is in agreement with the primary models for radio halo formation. The flatness of the radial profile suggests that the merger is still ongoing and is uniformly and continuously (re-) accelerating the population of relativistic electrons responsible of the radio emission even at large (~ 1 Mpc) distances from the cluster center.

Abstract:Radio observations discovered large scale non thermal sources in the central Mpc regions of dynamically disturbed galaxy clusters (radio halos). The morphological and spectral properties of these sources suggest that the emitting electrons are accelerated by spatially distributed and gentle mechanisms, providing some indirect evidence for turbulent acceleration in the inter-galactic-medium (IGM). Radio and X-ray surveys allow to investigate the statistics of radio halos and unveil a bimodal behaviour of the radio properties of galaxy clusters: merging clusters host radio halos and trace the well known radio--X correlation, while more relaxed clusters do not host radio halos and populate a region well separated from that spanned by the above correlation. This appears consistent with the hypothesis that relativistic electrons can be reaccelerated by MHD turbulence generated during cluster mergers. In the context of this model the population of radio halos consists of a mixture of halos with different spectral properties, most of them with very steep spectrum and visible only at low radio frequencies. For this reason the future LOFAR surveys may provide a robust test to this theoretical hypothesis.

Abstract:A radio bimodality is observed in galaxy clusters: a fraction of clusters host giant radio halos while the majority of clusters do not show evidence of diffuse cluster-scale radio emission. Present data clearly suggest that the radio bi-modality has a correspondence in terms of dynamical state of the hosting clusters. I will report on these evidences in some details and discuss the role of cluster mergers in the generation of giant radio halos and their evolution. Finally I will report on expectations on the statistical properties of radio halos assuming that the emitting electrons are re-accelerated by merger-turbulence, and discuss the role of incoming LOFAR surveys.

Abstract:Diffuse radio emission from galaxy clusters in the form of radio halos and relics are tracers of the shocks and turbulence in the intra-cluster medium. The imprints of the physical processes that govern their origin and evolution can be found in their radio morphologies and spectra. The role of mildly relativistic population of electrons may be crucial for the acceleration mechanisms to work efficiently. Low frequency observations with telescopes that allow imaging of extended sources over a broad range of low frequencies ($< 2$ GHz) offer the best tools to study these sources. I will review the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations in the past few years that have led to: i) statistical studies of large samples of galaxy clusters, ii) opening of the discovery space in low mass clusters and iii) tracing the spectra of seed relativistic electrons using the Upgraded GMRT.

Abstract:The goal of the present study is to extend our current knowledge of the diffuse radio source (halo and relic) populations to $z$ $>$ 0.3. Here we report GMRT and EVLA radio observations of six galaxy clusters taken from the MAssive Cluster Survey (MACS) catalogue to detect diffuse radio emission. We used archival GMRT (150, 235 and 610 MHz) and EVLA (L band) data and made images at multiple radio frequencies of the following six clusters - MACSJ0417.5-1154, MACSJ1131.8-1955, MACSJ0308.9+2645, MACSJ2243.3-0935, MACSJ2228.5+2036 and MACSJ0358.8-2955. We detect diffuse radio emission (halo or relic or both) in the first four clusters. In the last two clusters we do not detect any diffuse radio emission but we put stringent upper-limits on their radio powers. We also use archival {\it Chandra} X-ray data to carry out morphology and substructure analysis of these clusters. We find that based on X-ray data, these MACS clusters are non-relaxed and show substructures in their temperature distribution. The radio powers of the first four MACS clusters are consistent with their expected values in the $L_{x}$--$P_{1.4GHz}$ plot. {However, we found ultra-steep spectrum radio halo in the MACSJ0417.5-1154 cluster whose rest-frame cut-off frequency is at $\sim$ 900 MHz}. The remaining two clusters whose radio powers are $\sim$ 11 times below the expected values are most likely to be in the `off-state' as has been postulated in some of the models of radio halo formation.

Low-frequency radio study of MACS clusters at 610 and 235 MHz using the GMRT

Abstract:Studies have shown that mergers of massive galaxy clusters produce shocks and turbulence in the intra-cluster medium, the possible event that creates radio relics, as well as the radio halos. Here we present GMRT dual-band (235 and 610~MHz) radio observations of four such clusters from the MAssive Cluster Survey (MACS) catalogue. We report the discovery of a very faint, diffuse, elongated radio source with a projected size of about 0.5~Mpc in cluster MACSJ0152.5-2852. We also confirm the presence of a radio relic-like source (about 0.4~Mpc, previously reported at 325~MHz) in MACSJ0025.4-1222 cluster. Proposed relics in both these clusters are found apparently inside the virial radius instead of their usual peripheral location, while no radio halos are detected. These high-redshift clusters ($z=0.584$ and $0.413$) are among the earliest merging systems detected with cluster radio emissions. In MACSJ1931-2635 cluster, we found a radio mini-halo and an interesting highly bent pair of radio jets. Further, we present here a maiden study of low frequency (GMRT $235\;\&\;610$~MHz) spectral and morphological signatures of a previously known radio cluster MACSJ0014.3-3022 (Abell~2744). This cluster hosts a relatively flat spectrum ($\alpha^{610}_{235}\sim -1.15$), giant ($\sim 1.6$~Mpc each) halo-relic structure and a close-by high-speed ($1769\pm^{148}_{359}$~km~s$^{-1}$) merger-shock ($\mathcal{M}=2.02\pm^{0.17}_{0.41}$) originated from a possible second merger in the cluster.

A three-component giant radio halo: the puzzling case of the galaxy cluster Abell 2142

Abstract:Turbulence introduced into the intra-cluster medium (ICM) through cluster merger events transfers energy to non-thermal components, and can trigger the formation of diffuse synchrotron radio sources. Typical diffuse sources in the forms of giant radio halos and mini-halos are found in merging and relaxed cool core galaxy clusters, respectively. On the other hand, recent observations have revealed an increasing complexity of the non-thermal phenomenology. Abell 2142 (A2142) is a mildly disturbed cluster that exhibits uncommon thermal and non-thermal properties. It is known to host a hybrid halo consisting of two components (H1 and H2), namely a mini-halo-like and an enigmatic elongated radio halo-like structure. We aim to investigate the properties, origin, and connections of each component. We present deep LOFAR observations of A2142 in the frequency ranges $30-78$ MHz and $120-168$ MHz. With complementary multi-frequency radio and X-ray data, we analyse the radio spectral properties of the halo and assess the connection between the non-thermal and thermal components of the ICM. We detected a third radio component (H3), which extends over the cluster volume on scales $\sim 2$ Mpc, embeds H1 and H2, and has a morphology that roughly follows the thermal ICM distribution. The radio spectral index is moderately steep in H1 ($\alpha=1.09\pm 0.02$) and H2 ($\alpha=1.15\pm 0.02$), but is steeper ($\alpha=1.57\pm 0.20$) in H3. The analysis of the thermal and non-thermal properties allowed us to discuss possible formation scenarios for each radio component. Turbulence from sloshing motions of low-entropy gas on different scales may be responsible for the origin of H1 and H2. We classified H3 as a giant ultra-steep spectrum radio halo, which could trace the residual activity from an old energetic merger and/or inefficient turbulent re-acceleration induced by ongoing minor mergers.

Abstract:Radio relics are diffuse synchrotron sources in the outskirts of merging galaxy clusters energized by the merger shocks. In this paper, we present an overview of the radio relics in massive cluster mergers identified in the new TNG-Cluster simulation. This is a suite of magnetohydrodynamical cosmological zoom-in simulations of 352 massive galaxy clusters with $M_{\rm 500c}= 10^{14.0-15.3}\rm~M_{\odot}$ sampled from a 1 Gpc-size cosmological box. The simulations are performed using the moving-mesh code AREPO with the galaxy formation model and high numerical resolution consistent with the TNG300 run of the IllustrisTNG series. We post-process the shock properties obtained from the on-the-fly shock finder to estimate the diffuse radio emission generated by cosmological shockwaves for a total of $\sim300$ radio relics at redshift $z=0-1$. TNG-Cluster returns a variety of radio relics with diverse morphologies, encompassing textbook examples of double radio relics, single relics, and ``inverted" radio relics that are convex to the cluster center. Moreover, the simulated radio relics reproduce both the abundance and statistical relations of observed relics. We find that extremely large radio relics ($>$ 2 Mpc) are predominantly produced in massive cluster mergers with $M_{\rm 500c}\gtrsim8\times10^{14}~\rm~M_{\odot}$. This underscores the significance of simulating massive mergers to study giant radio relics similar to those found in observations. We release a library of radio relics from the TNG-Cluster simulation, which will serve as a crucial reference for upcoming next-generation surveys.

Discovery of Megaparsec-Scale, Low Surface Brightness Nonthermal Emission in Merging Galaxy Clusters using the Green Bank Telescope

Abstract:We present results on 12 X-ray bright clusters observed at 1.4 GHz with the Green Bank Telescope. After subtraction of point sources, we reach a median (best) 1-sigma noise level of 0.01 (0.006) microJy/sq. arcsec, and find a significant excess of diffuse, low surface brightness emission in 11 of 12 clusters. We present initial 1.4 GHz Very Large Array results on Abell 2319. We find: (a) four new detections tentatively classified as two halos (A2065, A2069) and two relics (A2067, A2073); (b) the first detection of the radio halo in A2061 at 1.4 GHz, making it a possible ultra-steep spectrum halo (alpha ~ 1.8); (c) a ~2 Mpc radio halo in the sloshing, minor-merger cluster A2142; (d) a >2x increase of the giant radio halo extent and luminosity in A2319; (e) a ~7x increase to the integrated radio flux and >4x increase to the observed extent of the peripheral, polarized radio relic in A1367 to ~600 kpc; (f) significant excess emission of ambiguous nature in three clusters. Our radio halo detections agree with the well-known X-ray/radio luminosity correlation, but are larger and fainter than expected. The volume averaged synchrotron emissivities are 1-2 orders of magnitude below the previous characteristic values. Some of the halo-like detections may represent previously unseen, very low surface brightness emission or blends of shock structures and sub-Mpc scale turbulent regions. Four of the five tentative halos contain one or more X-ray cold fronts, suggesting a possible connection between gas sloshing and particle acceleration on large scales. We see evidence for a possible inter-cluster filament between A2061 and A2067. For our faintest detections, we note the possibility of residual contamination from faint radio galaxies. We also quantify the sensitivity of the NVSS to extended emission as a function of angular size.[abridged]

Abstract:Context. Abell 1213, a low-richness galaxy system, is known to host an anomalous radio halo detected in data of the VLA. It is an outlier with regard to the relation between the radio halo power and the X-ray luminosity of the parent clusters. Aims. Our aim is to analyze the cluster in the optical, X-ray, and radio bands to characterize the environment of its diffuse radio emission and to shed new light on its nature. Methods. We used optical data from the SDSS to study the internal dynamics of the cluster. We also analyzed archival XMM-Newton X-ray data to unveil the properties of its hot intracluster medium. Finally, we used recent data from LOFAR at 144 MHz, together with VLA data at 1.4 GHz, to study the spectral behavior of the diffuse radio source. Results. Both our optical and X-ray analysis reveal that this low-mass cluster exhibits disturbed dynamics. In fact, it is composed of several galaxy groups in the peripheral regions and, in particular, in the core, where we find evidence of substructures oriented in the NE-SW direction, with hints of a merger nearly along the line of sight. The analysis of the X-ray emission adds further evidence that the cluster is in an unrelaxed dynamical state. At radio wavelengths, the LOFAR data show that the diffuse emission is ~510 kpc in size. Moreover, there are hints of low-surface-brightness emission permeating the cluster center. Conclusions. The environment of the diffuse radio emission is not what we would expect for a classical halo. The spectral index map of the radio source is compatible with a relic interpretation, possibly due to a merger in the N-S or NE-SW directions, in agreement with the substructures detected through the optical analysis. The fragmented, diffuse radio emissions at the cluster center could be attributed to the surface brightness peaks of a faint central radio halo.

Abstract:We present a first attempt to investigate the origin of radio-emitting electrons in the newly discovered class of mega radio halos in clusters of galaxies. We study the evolution of relativistic electrons accreted by the external regions of a simulated cluster of galaxies at high resolution, including the effect of radiative losses and turbulent reacceleration acting on relativistic electrons. We conclude that turbulent reacceleration induced by structure formation, if sufficiently prolonged, has the potential to produce a large reservoir of radio-emitting electrons in the large regions illuminated by mega radio halos observed by LOFAR.
