Abstract:We show that for any finitely presented group $G$, there is a simply connected closed 4-manifold containing an infinite family of topologically isotopic but smoothly inequivalent 2-links whose 2-link group is $G$. We also show that, if $G$ satisfies the necessary topological conditions, these 2-links have nullhomotopic components.

Hard Unknots and Collapsing Tangles

Abstract:This paper gives infinitely many examples of unknot diagrams that are hard, in the sense that the diagrams need to be made more complicated by Reidemeister moves before they can be simplified. In order to construct these diagrams, we prove theorems characterizing when the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles is an unknot. The key theorem shows that the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles [P/Q] and [R/S] is unknotted if and only if PS + QR has absolute value equal to 1. The paper uses these results in studying processive DNA recombination, finding minimal size unknot diagrams, generalizing to collapses to knots as well as to unknots, and in finding unknots with arbirarily high complexity. The paper is self-contained, with a review of the theory of rational tangles and a last section on relationships of the theme of the paper with other aspects of topology and number theory. The present version of the paper contains a correction to Figure 22 of the previous (and published) version, a small expansion to the section on Farey fractions, and an updated reference to the paper "Unknotting unknots" by Henrich and Kauffman.

Abstract:Attaching a 2-handle to a genus two or greater boundary component of a 3-manifold is a natural generalization of Dehn filling a torus boundary component. We prove that there is an interesting relationship between an essential surface in a sutured 3-manifold, the number of intersections between the boundary of the surface and one of the sutures, and the cocore of the 2-handle in the manifold after attaching a 2-handle along the suture. We use this result to show that tunnels for tunnel number one knots or links in any 3-manifold can be isotoped to lie on a branched surface corresponding to a certain taut sutured manifold hierarchy of the knot or link exterior. In a subsequent paper, we use the theorem to prove that band sums satisfy the cabling conjecture, and to give new proofs that unknotting number one knots are prime and that genus is superadditive under band sum. To prove the theorem, we introduce band taut sutured manifolds and prove the existence of band taut sutured manifold hierarchies.

Abstract:We provide three 3-dimensional characterizations of the Z-slice genus of a knot, the minimal genus of a locally-flat surface in 4-space cobounding the knot whose complement has cyclic fundamental group: in terms of balanced algebraic unknotting, in terms of Seifert surfaces, and in terms of presentation matrices of the Blanchfield pairing. This result generalizes to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere and surfaces in certain simply connected signature zero 4-manifolds cobounding this homology sphere. Using the Blanchfield characterization, we obtain effective lower bounds for the Z-slice genus from the linking pairing of the double branched covering of the knot. In contrast, we show that for odd primes p, the linking pairing on the first homology of the p-fold branched covering is determined up to isometry by the action of the deck transformation group on said first homology. As an application of the new upper and lower bounds, we complete the calculation of the Z-slice genus for all prime knots with crossing number up to 12.

Abstract:We describe a construction procedure of infinite sets of $2$-links in closed simply connected 4-manifolds that are topologically isotopic, smoothly inequivalent and componentwise topologically unknotted. These 2-links are the first examples of such kind in the literature. The examples provided have surface and free groups as their 2-link groups. We also point out an exotic Brunnian behaviour of such families, which highlights the important role of linking in creating exotic phenomena.

Abstract:We study some interesting properties of Furstenberg's topology of the integers. We show that it is metrizable, totally disconnected, and (Z,+,.) is a topological ring with respect to this topology. As an application, we show that any two disjoint sets of primes can be separated by arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:We describe an example of a $C^\infty$ diffeomorphism on a 7--manifold which has a compact invariant set such that uncountably many of its connected components are pseudocircles. (Any 7--manifold will suffice.) Furthermore, any diffeomorphism which is sufficiently close (in the $C^1$ metric) to the constructed map has a similar invariant set, and the dynamics of the map on the invariant set are chaotic.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to explore properties of the whisker topology, which is a topology endowed on the fundamental group and whose utility is to detect locally complicated phenomena in pathological topological spaces. We show that the whisker topology preserves products, resolve an open question regarding the existence of a space which makes $\pi_1^{wh}(X,x_0)$ a non-discrete, non-abelian, and Hausdorff topological group, and show the whisker topology is not separable on the earring group $\pi_1(\Er^1,x_0)$.

Abstract:We study smooth, proper embeddings of noncompact surfaces in 4-manifolds, focusing on exotic planes and annuli, i.e., embeddings pairwise homeomorphic to the standard embeddings of R^2 and R^2-int D^2 in R^4. We encounter two uncountable classes of exotic planes, with radically different properties. One class is simple enough that we exhibit explicit level diagrams of them without 2-handles. Diagrams from the other class seem intractable to draw, and require infinitely many 2-handles. We show that every compact surface embedded rel nonempty boundary in the 4-ball has interior pairwise homeomorphic to infinitely many smooth, proper embeddings in R^4. We also see that the almost-smooth, compact, embedded surfaces produced in 4-manifolds by Freedman theory must have singularities requiring infinitely many local minima in their radial functions. We construct exotic planes with uncountable group actions injecting into the pairwise mapping class group. This work raises many questions, some of which we list.

Abstract:We survey two decades of work on the (sequential) topological complexity of configuration spaces of graphs (ordered and unordered), aiming to give an account that is unifying, elementary, and self-contained. We discuss the traditional approach through cohomology, with its limitations, and the more modern approach through asphericity and the fundamental group, explaining how they are in fact variations on the same core ideas. We close with a list of open problems in the field.

Examples of topologically unknotted tori

Abstract:We show that certain smooth tori with group $\mathbb{Z}$ in $S^4$ have exteriors with standard equivariant intersection forms, and so are topologically unknotted. These include the turned 1-twist-spun tori in the 4-sphere constructed by Boyle, the union of the genus one Seifert surface of Cochran and Davis that has no slice derivative with a ribbon disc, and tori with precisely four critical points whose middle level set is a 2-component link with vanishing Alexander polynomial. This gives evidence towards the conjecture that all $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces in $S^4$ are topologically unknotted, which is open for genus one and two. It is unclear whether these tori are smoothly unknotted, except for tori with four critical points whose middle level set is a split link. The double cover of $S^4$ branched along any of these surfaces is a potentially exotic copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, and, in the case of turned twisted tori, we show they cannot be distinguished from $S^2 \times S^2$ using Seiberg-Witten invariants.

An [math] pearl chain necklace [math] is the union of [math] and [math]. We will construct, via the action of a Kleinian group, a sequence of nested pearl chain necklaces [math] whose inverse limit is a wild knot of dynamically defined type [math]. In this paper, we will prove some topological properties of this kind of wild knots; in particular, we generalize the construction of cyclic branched coverings for this case, and we show that there exists a wild knot of dynamically defined type such that [math] is an [math]-fold cyclic branched covering of [math] along it, for [math].

Abstract:The {\em topological symmetry group} of an embedding $\Gamma$ of an abstract graph $\gamma$ in $S^3$ is the group of automorphisms of $\gamma$ which can be realized by homeomorphisms of the pair $(S^3, \Gamma)$. These groups are motivated by questions about the symmetries of molecules in space. The Petersen family of graphs is an important family of graphs for many problems in low dimensional topology, so it is desirable to understand the possible groups of symmetries of their embeddings in space. In this paper, we find all the groups which can be realized as topological symmetry groups for each of the graphs in the Petersen Family. Along the way, we also complete the classification of the realizable topological symmetry groups for $K_{3,3}$.

Abstract:While the problem of computing the genus of a knot is now fairly well understood, no algorithm is known for its four-dimensional variants, both in the smooth and in the topological locally flat category. In this article, we investigate a class of knots and links called Hopf arborescent links, which are obtained as the boundaries of some iterated plumbings of Hopf bands. We show that for such links, computing the genus defects, which measure how much the four-dimensional genera differ from the classical genus, is decidable. Our proof is non-constructive, and is obtained by proving that Seifert surfaces of Hopf arborescent links under a relation of minors defined by containment of their Seifert surfaces form a well-quasi-order.

Topological entanglement and number theory

Abstract:The recent developments in the study of topological multi-boundary entanglement in the context of 3d Chern-Simons theory (with gauge group $G$ and level $k$) suggest a strong interplay between entanglement measures and number theory. The purpose of this note is twofold. First, we conjecture that the 'sum of the negative powers of the quantum dimensions of all integrable highest weight representations at level $k$' is an integer multiple of the Witten zeta function of $G$ when $k \to \infty$. This provides an alternative way to compute these zeta functions, and we present some examples. Next, we use this conjecture to investigate number-theoretic properties of the Rényi entropies of the quantum state associated with the $S^3$ complement of torus links of type $T_{p,p}$. In particular, we show that in the semiclassical limit of $k \to \infty$, these entropies converge to a finite value. This finite value can be written in terms of the Witten zeta functions of the group $G$ evaluated at positive even integers.

Topological isotopy and finite type invariants

Abstract:In 1974, D. Rolfsen asked: If two PL links in $S^3$ are isotopic (=homotopic through embeddings), then are they PL isotopic? We prove that they are PL isotopic to another pair of links which are indistinguishable from each other by finite type invariants. Thus if finite type invariants separate PL links in $S^3$, then Rolfsen's problem has an affirmative solution. In fact, we show that finite type invariants separate PL links in $S^3$ if and only if certain 6 rather diverse conjectures hold simultaneously. We also show that if $v$ is a finite type invariant (or more generally a colored finite type invariant) of PL links, and $v$ is invariant under PL isotopy, then $v$ assumes the same value on all sufficiently close $C^0$-approximations of any given topological link; moreover, the extension of $v$ by continuity to topological links is an invariant of isotopy. Some specific invariants of this kind are discussed.

Abstract:The Jones-Wenzl projectors play a central role in quantum topology, underlying the construction of SU(2) topological quantum field theories and quantum spin networks. We construct chain complexes whose graded Euler characteristic is the "classical" projector in the Temperley-Lieb algebra. We show that they are homotopy idempotents and uniquely defined up to homotopy. Our results fit within the general framework of Khovanov's categorification of the Jones polynomial. Consequences of our construction include families of knot invariants corresponding to higher representations of quantum su(2) and a categorification of quantum spin networks. We introduce 6j-symbols in this context.

Abstract:We study the left-orderability of the fundamental groups of cyclic branched covers of links which admit co-oriented taut foliations. In particular we do this for cyclic branched covers of fibred knots in integer homology 3 3 -spheres and cyclic branched covers of closed braids. The latter allows us to complete the proof of the L-space conjecture for closed, connected, orientable, irreducible 3 3 -manifolds containing a genus one fibred knot. We also prove that the universal abelian cover of a manifold obtained by generic Dehn surgery on a hyperbolic fibred knot in an integer homology 3 3 -sphere admits a co-oriented taut foliation and has left-orderable fundamental group, even if the surgered manifold does not, and that the same holds for many branched covers of satellite knots with braided patterns. A key fact used in our proofs is that the Euler class of a universal circle representation associated to a co-oriented taut foliation coincides with the Euler class of the foliation’s tangent bundle. Though known to experts, no proof of this important result has appeared in the literature. We provide such a proof in the paper.
