Abstract:The standard Klein bottle coefficient in the construction of open descendants is shown to equal the Frobenius-Schur indicator of a conformal field theory. Other consistent Klein bottle projections are shown to correspond to simple currents. These observations enable us to generalize the standard open string construction from C-diagonal parent theories to include non-standard Klein bottles. Using (generalizations of) the Frobenius-Schur indicator we prove positivity and integrality of the resulting open and closed string state multiplicities for standard as well as non-standard Klein bottles.

Abstract: We define total Frobenius-Schur indicator for each object in a spherical fusion category $C$ as a certain canonical sum of its higher indicators. The total indicators are invariants of spherical fusion categories. If $C$ is the representation category of a semisimple quasi-Hopf algebra $H$, we prove that the total indicators are non-negative integers which satisfy a certain divisibility condition. In addition, if $H$ is a Hopf algebra, then all the total indicators are positive. Consequently, the positivity of total indicators is a necessary condition for a quasi-Hopf algebra being gauge equivalent to a Hopf algebra. Certain twisted quantum doubles of finite groups and some examples of Tambara-Yamagami categories are discussed for the sufficiency of this positivity condition.

Abstract:Mason and Ng have given a generalization to semisimple quasi-Hopf algebras of Linchenko and Montgomery's generalization to semisimple Hopf algebras of the classical Frobenius-Schur theorem for group representations. We give a simplified proof, in particular a somewhat conceptual derivation of the appropriate form of the Frobenius-Schur indicator that indicates if and in which of two possible fashions a given simple module is self-dual.

Abstract:Quantum 8, 1363 (2024). https://doi.org/10.22331/q-2024-05-29-1363 Coherent-state representations are a standard tool to deal with continuous-variable systems, as they allow one to efficiently visualize quantum states in phase space. Here, we work out an alternative basis consisting of monomials on the basic observables, with the crucial property of behaving well under symplectic transformations. This basis is the analogue of the irreducible tensors widely used in the context of SU(2) symmetry. Given the density matrix of a state, the expansion coefficients in that basis constitute the multipoles, which describe the state in a canonically covariant form that is both concise and explicit. We use these quantities to assess properties such as quantumness or Gaussianity and to furnish direct connections between tomographic measurements and quasiprobability distribution reconstructions.

Frobenius--Schur indicators for twisted Real representation theory and two dimensional unoriented topological field theory

Abstract:We construct a two dimensional unoriented open/closed topological field theory from a finite graded group $\pi:\hat{G} \twoheadrightarrow \{1,-1\}$, a $\pi$-twisted $2$-cocycle $\hat{\theta}$ on $B \hat{G}$ and a character $\lambda: \hat{G} \rightarrow U(1)$. The underlying oriented theory is a twisted Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. The construction is based in the $(\hat{G}, \hat{\theta},\lambda)$-twisted Real representation theory of $\ker \pi$. In particular, twisted Real representations are boundary conditions and the generalized Frobenius-Schur element is its crosscap state.

Higher frobenius-schur indicators for drinfeld doubles of finite groups through characters of centralizers

Abstract:We present a new approach to calculating the higher Frobenius-Schur indicators for the simple modules over the Drinfeld double of a finite group. In contrast to the formula by Kashina-Sommerh{ä}user-Zhu that involves a sum over all group elements satisfying a certain condition, our formula operates on the level of conjugacy classes and character tables. It can be implemented in the computer algebra system GAP, efficiently enough to deal, on a laptop, with symmetric groups up to $S_{18}$ (providing further evidence that indicators are non-negative in this case) or simple groups of order up to $2 \cdot 10^8$. The approach also allows us to test whether all indicators over the double of a given group are rational , without computing them. Among simple groups of order up to about $5 \cdot 10^{11}$ an inspection yields exactly one example (of order about $5 \cdot 10^9$) where irrational indicators occur.

Abstract:Armed with the explicit computation of Schur Multipliers, we offer a classification of SU(n) orbifolds for n = 2,3,4 which permit the turning on of discrete torsion. This is in response to the host of activity lately in vogue on the application of discrete torsion to D-brane orbifold theories. As a by-product, we find a hitherto unknown class of N = 1 orbifolds with non-cyclic discrete torsion group. Furthermore, we supplement the status quo ante by investigating a first example of a non-Abelian orbifold admitting discrete torsion, namely the ordinary dihedral group as a subgroup of SU(3). A comparison of the quiver theory thereof with that of its covering group, the binary dihedral group, without discrete torsion, is also performed.
The Stranger Things of Symmetric Product Orbifold CFTs

Abstract:Symmetric product orbifold theories are valuable due to their universal features at large $N$. Here we will demonstrate that they have features that are not as pervasive: we provide evidence of strange behaviour under deformations within their moduli space. To this end, we consider the symmetric product orbifold of tensor products of $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-Virasoro minimal models, and classify them according to two criteria. The first criterion is the existence of a single-trace twisted exactly marginal operator that triggers the deformation. The second criterion is a sparseness condition on the growth of light states in the elliptic genera. In this context we encounter a strange variety: theories that obey the first criterion but the second criterion falls into a Hagedorn-like growth. We explain why this may be counter-intuitive and discuss how it might be accounted for in conformal perturbation theory. We also find a new infinite class of theories that obey both criteria, which are necessary conditions for each moduli space to contain a supergravity point.

Abstract:Algebra Colloquium, Volume 31, Issue 04, Page 675-688, December 2024. Let [math] be a semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field [math] of characteristic [math]. We show that the antipode [math] of [math] satisfies the equality [math], where [math], [math] and [math] is a nonzero integral of [math]. The formula of [math] enables us to define higher Frobenius-Schur indicators for the Hopf algebra [math]. This generalizes the notion of higher Frobenius-Schur indicators from the case of characteristic 0 to the case of characteristic [math]. These indicators defined here share some properties with the ones defined over a field of characteristic 0. In particular, all these indicators are gauge invariants for the tensor category [math] of finite-dimensional representations of [math].

Abstract:Here we study bounds on the Frobenius-Schur exponent of spherical fusion categories based on their global dimension generalizing bounds from the representation theory of finite-dimensional quasi-Hopf algebras. Our main result is that if the Frobenius-Schur exponent of a modular fusion category is a prime power for some prime integer $p$, then it is bounded by the norm of its global dimension when $p$ is odd, and four times the norm of its global dimension when $p=2$; these bounds are optimal. If one assumes in addition pseudounitarity, the categories achieving the optimal bound are completely described and we attain similar bounds and classifications for arbitrary spherical fusion categories. This proof includes an explicit classification of modular fusion categories of Frobenius-Perron dimension $p^5$; all examples which are not pointed are constructed explicitly from the Ising categories and the representation theory of extraspecial $p$-groups.

There and Back Again: Mapping and Factorising Cosmological Observables

Abstract:Cosmological correlators encode invaluable information about the wavefunction that characterises the state of the primordial universe. In this letter we present a simple yet novel duality between correlators and wavefunction coefficients that is valid to all orders in the loop expansion. The duality manifests itself as a $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry in the correspondence between correlators and the physical parts of wavefunction coefficients. To demonstrate the power of the duality already at tree-level, we derive a correlator-to-correlator factorisation (CCF) formula for the parity-odd part of cosmological correlators that relates $n$-point observables to lower-point ones via a series of diagrammatic cuts. These relations are in principle testable as they involve observables defined for arbitrary physical kinematics (i.e. without performing any analytic continuation or taking any soft limits). For $n=4$, the CCF formula provides a relation between the parity-odd part of the trispectrum of curvature perturbations, the bispectra involving two curvature perturbations and an additional state with a complementary series mass and integer spin, and the power spectrum of this additional state.

Abstract:A classic theorem of Kazhdan and Margulis states that for any semisimple Lie group without compact factors, there is a positive lower bound on the covolume of lattices. H. C. Wang's subsequent quantitative analysis showed that the fundamental domain of any lattice contains a ball whose radius depends only on the group itself. A direct consequence is a positive minimum volume for orbifolds modeled on the corresponding symmetric space. However, sharp bounds are known only for hyperbolic orbifolds of dimensions two and three, and recently for quaternionic hyperbolic orbifolds of all dimensions. As in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0911.4712" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0911.4712">arXiv:0911.4712</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1205.2011" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1205.2011">arXiv:1205.2011</a>, this article combines H. C. Wang's radius estimate with an improved upper sectional curvature bound for a canonical left-invariant metric on a real semisimple Lie group and uses Gunther's volume comparison theorem to deduce an explicit uniform lower volume bound for arbitrary orbifold quotients of a given irreducible symmetric spaces of non-compact type. The numerical bound for the octonionic hyperbolic plane is the first such bound to be given. For (real) hyperbolic orbifolds of dimension greater than three, the bounds are an improvement over what was previously known.

Abstract:In this note, we generalize a mean-value inequality of Guo-Phong-Sturm to the setting of a compact Kähler orbifold. This shows that their reasoning is insensitive to quotient singularities. As we aim for a self-contained exposition, we generalize some fundamental results, namely the $\alpha$-invariant estimate by Hörmander and Tian, an approximation result for the psh-envelope of a $(1,1)$-form in a Kähler class by Berman and an $L^\infty$ estimate for this envelope by Guo-Phong-Tong-Wang.

Abstract:Collisionless energy absorption in 1D nanoplasma layer is considered. Straightforward classical calculation of the absorption rate in action-angle variables is presented. In regular regime the result obtained is the same as in [Zaretsky <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>., 2004], but deeper insight is possible now due to the technique used. Chirikov criterion of the chaotic absorption regime is written out. Collisionless energy absorption rate in nanoplasma layer is calculated in stochastic regime.

Orbifold Indices in Four Dimensions

Abstract:We introduce supersymmetric indices for four-dimensional gauge theories defined on $\mathscr O \times S^1$, where $\mathscr O $ is a circle bundle over the weighted complex projective line informally known as spindle. Trivial fibrations yield a four-dimensional version of the spindle index, which we obtain by applying localization to partition functions of theories on the direct product of a spindle and a two-dimensional torus. Conversely, non-trivial fibrations lead to the branched lens index, which we compute by localizing theories on the direct product of a circle and a branched covering of the lens space, possibly endowed with conical singularities. The branched lens index encompasses the maximally refined four-dimensional lens index as a special case.

Abstract:We study Chern-Simons Gauge Theory in axial gauge on ${\mathbb R}^3.$ This theory has a quadratic Lagrangian and therefore expectations can be computed nonperturbatively by explicit formulas, giving an (unbounded) linear functional on a space of polynomial functions in the gauge fields, as a mathematically well-defined avatar of the formal functional integral. We use differential-geometric methods to extend the definition of this linear functional to expectations of products of Wilson loops corresponding to oriented links in ${\mathbb R}^3,$ and derive skein relations for them. In the case $G=SU(2)$ we show that these skein relations are closely related to those of the Kauffman bracket polynomial, which is closely related to the Jones polynomial. We also study the case of groups of higher rank. We note that in the absence of a cubic term in the action, there is no quantization condition on the coupling $\lambda,$ which can be any complex number. This is in line with the fact that the Jones polynomial, in contrast to the manifold invariants of Witten and Reshetikhin-Turaev, is defined for any value of the coupling. The appearance of the parameter $e^{\frac1{2\lambda}}$ in the expectations and skein relations is also natural. Likewise, the extension of the theory to noncompact groups presents no difficulties. Finally we show how computations similar to ours, but for gauge fields in two dimensions, yield the Goldman bracket.

Abstract:This note provides a short proof of the fact that the reduced scheme underlying each orbifold Quot scheme associated to a finite subgroup of SL(2,C) is isomorphic to a Nakajima quiver variety. Our approach uses recent work of the author with Yamagishi, allowing us to bypass the combinatorial arguments and the use of recollement from the original paper with Gammelgaard, Gyenge and Szendroi.
