Combustion and Flame
Abstract:Binary diffusion coefficients are closely related to the capability of predicting flame properties for combustion modeling, especially for non-premixed flame extinction in counterflow configuration . The Chapman-Enskog (CE) method combined with Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential parameters is the most common way for calculating diffusion coefficients despite the fact that this approach would cause deviation when it was applied on non-spherical polyatomic molecules. Instead of obtaining appropriate LJ parameters , in this study, we computed the binary diffusion coefficients for methyl decanoate in nitrogen based on the Green-Kubo (GK) method and molecular dynamics simulations. The binary diffusion coefficient obtained from molecular dynamics is significantly lower than that obtained by CE formulation. Finally, direct replacement with updated binary diffusion coefficients would amplify the inhibition effect of large ester and improve the prediction of extinction strain rate of a reduced methyl decanoate kinetic model that originally overestimated this flame properties. The dependence of the extinction strain rate for diffusion flame on fuel diffusivity illustrates that the diffusivity should be properly considered for developing a larger methyl ester combustion model.
