Abstract:With the increase of both magnitude and frequency of hydrological extreme events such as drought and flooding, the significance of adequately modeling hydrological extreme events is fully recognized. Estimation of extreme rainfall/flood for various return periods is of prime importance for hydrological design or risk assessment. However, due to knowledge and data limitation, uncertainty involved in extrapolating beyond available data is huge. In this paper, different sources of uncertainty in statistical modeling of extreme hydrological events are studied in a systematic way. This is done by focusing on several key uncertainty sources using three different case studies. The chosen case studies highlight a number of projects where there have been questions regarding the uncertainty in extreme rainfall/flood estimation. The results show that the uncertainty originated from the methodology is the largest and could be >40% for a return period of 200 years, while the uncertainty caused by ignoring the dependence among multiple hydrological variables seems the smallest. In the end, it is highly recommended that uncertainty in modeling extreme hydrological events be fully recognized and incorporated into a formal hydrological extreme analysis.
The Uncertainty Analysis on the Estimated Velocity in Vehicle Impact Accident Reconstruction

Abstract:In accident reconstruction, it is important to accurately estimate the pre-impact velocity. The uncertainty analysis theory provides mathematical method for detecting the uncertainty propagation from measured values into calculated results. In this paper, the method is used to determine the uncertainty of velocity values calculated by the model and algorithm of accident reconstruction. Then the error of accident reconstruction results can be examined to some extent. The effectiveness of this technique is tested through a typical example of vehicle oblique front crash. According to the analysis on calculated results, the characteristics of uncertainty propagation are concluded and the relevant problem and development prospects of the method are also pointed out.

Abstract:In order to estimate the creditability of traffic accident reconstruction analysis,a reconstruction reliability analysis method was put forward which combined high-order moment technology,probabilistic perturbation method,Edgeworth series and reconstruction analysis technology.The confidence interval and confidence of reconstruction analysis result were obtained as the estimate indexes of the creditability.For traffic accident reconstruction reliability analysis with redundant information,a comprehensive-model method was proposed through integrating subjective weighting method,reliability analysis technology and optimization technology.A practical traffic accident case was investigated to verify the method's feasibility and validity.Study result indicates that the mean calculated by comprehensive-model method tends to the intermediate value of basic reconstruction analysis models,and the change range is minimum.So the reconstruction analysis result is more precise and scientific by using comprehensive-model method because of considering the intrinsical uncertainty influence of basic factors and expert experiences.2 tabs,4 figs,8 refs.
Uncertain Inverse Traffic Accident Reconstruction by Combining the Modified Arbitrary Orthogonal Polynomial Expansion and Novel Optimization Technique.

Abstract:Traffic accident reconstruction accomplished by traditional deterministic inverse method is highly user-interactive and time-consuming and its solution is hard to convince in court due to various uncertainty in measurements, calculation and modeling. To rapidly identify the unknown impact parameters and simultaneously quantify their uncertainty, an uncertain inverse traffic accident reconstruction is accomplished by combining the modified arbitrary orthogonal polynomial expansion (AOPE) which can accurately and effectively construct surrogate models and novel optimization technique which solves the uncertain inverse problem by deterministic method. First, a dynamic model is built to simulate a traffic accident. Then, using the optimal Latin hypercube design, the impact responses fluctuating greatly with the change of unknown impact parameters are selected as the evaluation index of reconstruction quality. Using the random forest algorithm, the impact parameter importance is evaluated according to the SHAP values. Subsequently, a modified AOPE is presented based on the impact parameter importance measures. The mappings for an actual traffic accident are approximated using the modified AOPE to reduce the computational burden and guarantee the fitting precision. Finally, based on the novel optimization technique, the uncertain inverse traffic accident reconstruction is defined to search the optimal distributions of unknown impact parameters which make the distributions of simulation results of impact responses match these of accident investigation. The uncertainty is propagated by the Monte Carlo simulation in the optimization process. An actual vehicle-to-two-wheeler accident is applied to explain this uncertain inverse traffic accident reconstruction, and the mean values of unknown impact parameters are assigned into the established simulation model to check the effectiveness of results. By matching the simulated and actual impact responses, it shows that the proposed approach is efficient and reliable for traffic accident reconstruction under uncertainty. This approach can help the accident investigators and judges reasonably evaluate the behavior of accident participants and complete the accident responsibility confirmation.

Abstract:The process of 3D scene reconstruction can be affected by numerous uncertainty sources in real-world scenes. While Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (GS) achieve high-fidelity rendering, they lack built-in mechanisms to directly address or quantify uncertainties arising from the presence of noise, occlusions, confounding outliers, and imprecise camera pose inputs. In this paper, we introduce a taxonomy that categorizes different sources of uncertainty inherent in these methods. Moreover, we extend NeRF- and GS-based methods with uncertainty estimation techniques, including learning uncertainty outputs and ensembles, and perform an empirical study to assess their ability to capture the sensitivity of the reconstruction. Our study highlights the need for addressing various uncertainty aspects when designing NeRF/GS-based methods for uncertainty-aware 3D reconstruction.

Abstract:International Journal of Computational Methods, Ahead of Print. We present here an uncertainty quantification methodology assisting fracture/damage detection that accounts for different sources of uncertainty involving in real-time damage identification. The relationship between structural responses (i.e., the natural frequencies) and the uncertain crack locations and lengths in mechanical systems is quantitatively assessed using variance-based sensitivity analysis. Sparse variational Gaussian process is employed to replace the computationally expensive finite element model. Dynamic behaviors of two mechanical systems which are (1) aluminum frame with adjustable masses and (2) cracked car suspension arm are analyzed through experimental and numerical data. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of combining these methods for structural assessments, providing precise and reliable insights applicable to complex mechanical models. We believe that this study enhances the understanding of vibration-induced fracture/damage and highlights the potential of this framework for advancing structural reliability analysis and dynamic system optimization.

Abstract:Volume estimation packages often lack tools for measuring and analyzing the effect of input data uncertainty and possible error propagation in the volume estimation process. This paper proposes and develops an empirical procedure for error modeling in volume estimation using spatial simulation techniques. The procedure can be used to study the stability of interpolation methods in the presence of error, in other words finding a method that predicts best surface fit and volume estimates from imperfect data. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to construct an effective algorithm to study the effect of input data uncertainty on volumes estimated with perturbed Kriged surfaces and triangulated surfaces. The results are compared for consistency with a volume generated from a triangulated surface that holds the location points fixed.

Abstract:The rapidly expanding field of Scan-to-BIM applications highlights the importance of model uncertainty assessment in describing the quality of modeling results. Although there have been recent research advancements in point cloud-based building modeling, there has been limited investigation into accurately analyzing error propagation. This paper estimates the geometry uncertainty in 3D modeling based on a strict application of geodetic stochastic modeling. Statistical uncertainty is incorporated into the building reconstruction process and procedures that enable self-verification within this process are developed. The method can be successfully used to evaluate the dimensional uncertainty of generated BIMs, which is especially important in the field of civil engineering with high accuracy requirements concerning metric quality control. Follow-up research will also consider systematic errors and apply the methods to other 3D point cloud acquisition techniques.

Abstract:The design and development of crashworthy vehicles depend increasingly on credible crash simulation results. This credibility requires a careful process of verification and validation (V&V). The former relates to assessing the correctness of the calculation while the latter relates to the appropriateness of the physical and numerical test results. In this context, various sources of uncertainty exist in crash tests as well as in simulation models, which can influence the validation outcomes. Hence, it is essential to study statistical validation approaches for crash applications. In this paper, we elaborate on two important aspects of validation for crash simulation models: quantification of the credibility of simulation models, and consideration of uncertainties in the validation. Limited and noisy experimental data, typical in crash applications, impose a challenge on the investigation of validation approaches. To address these challenges, we use synthetic experimental results in our study. A crash-box model is validated using the V&V20-2009 validation standard. Two case studies are considered. The first case study aims to show the application of the V&V20 approach to a crash problem. The second case is a more complex scenario and aims to explore the impact of different experimental factors, such as experimental noise, hidden uncertainties, and the number of experiments on the validation results. In the end, we examine how underlying assumptions in the validation approach affect the conservativity of the validation results.

Comparative analysis of methods to estimate the tire/road friction coefficient applied to traffic accident reconstruction

Abstract:The measure of the friction factor in the location of the event is very important to get accurate inputs to model the accident, as the friction factor depends on environmental conditions and the dynamics of the event. In some low-middle income countries, accident reconstruction experts, usually don't have the feasibility to acquire expensive equipment as high precision accelerometers; therefore, it is important to identify a low-cost method that provides data quality comparable with high precision equipment. This study presents a comparison of three methods: VC4000PC accelerometer, sensor kinetics mobile app and video analysis by tracker (free software). The methods have been compared experimentally for emergency braking with blocked wheel, as well as using ABS. Data from the three methods were recorded simultaneously. Data analysis was made applying inferential statistics. The results indicate that the data collected with the smartphone app ensure good accuracy and does not provide significant variance in comparison with the accelerometer. On the other hand, the data obtained by video analysis shows a good linear relationship with the accelerometer; however, it shows some statistical evidence of differences related to precision and variances in comparison with accelerometer device. The confidence interval, absolute error, and other estimators have been obtained for the smartphone method, to promote the optimal using by the experts to get parameters on site and apply to a traffic accident reconstruction.

Abstract:Characterizing the uncertainty of reliability in risk assessment has been recognized as a critical element in effective decision-making. Although many kinds of risk assessment guidelines have introduced various uncertainty analysis techniques, estimates of the uncertainty bounds of human reliability have not been investigated on an empirical basis. In this study, we predicted how parameter uncertainties in human error probabilities can be formed by employing uncertainty intervals in the failure probabilities of primitive tasks, the multipliers of performance-shaping factors, and recovery failure probabilities. The above component values were incorporated through Monte Carlo simulation and the EMBRACE (Empirical Data-Based Crew Reliability Assessment and Cognitive Error Analysis) method. As a result, distributions of human error probabilities in various contextual situations were derived. The statistical model most suitable for the distributions was then selected, and the bounds of 90 % uncertainty intervals were estimated according to the selected statistical model. Implications and limitations of this study are also discussed.

Abstract:When we use simulation to evaluate the performance of a stochastic system, the simulation often contains input distributions estimated from real-world data; therefore, there is both simulation and input uncertainty in the performance estimates. Ignoring either source of uncertainty underestimates the overall statistical error. Simulation uncertainty can be reduced by additional computation (e.g., more replications). Input uncertainty can be reduced by collecting more real-world data, when feasible. This paper proposes an approach to quantify overall statistical uncertainty when the simulation is driven by independent parametric input distributions; specifically, we produce a confidence interval that accounts for both simulation and input uncertainty by using a metamodel-assisted bootstrapping approach. The input uncertainty is measured via bootstrapping, an equation-based stochastic kriging metamodel propagates the input uncertainty to the output mean, and both simulation and metamodel uncertainty are derived using properties of the metamodel. A variance decomposition is proposed to estimate the relative contribution of input to overall uncertainty; this information indicates whether the overall uncertainty can be significantly reduced through additional simulation alone. Asymptotic analysis provides theoretical support for our approach, while an empirical study demonstrates that it has good finite-sample performance.

Abstract:The paper develops a methodology to enable microscopic models of transportation systems to be accessible for a statistical study of traffic accidents. Our approach is intended to permit an understanding not only of historical losses but also of incidents that may occur in altered, potential future systems. Through such a counterfactual analysis, it is possible, from an insurance, but also from an engineering perspective, to assess the impact of changes in the design of vehicles and transport systems in terms of their impact on road safety and functionality. Structurally, we characterize the total loss distribution approximatively as a mean-variance mixture. This also yields valuation procedures that can be used instead of Monte Carlo simulation. Specifically, we construct an implementation based on the open-source traffic simulator SUMO and illustrate the potential of the approach in counterfactual case studies.

Abstract:Due to lack of scientific understanding, some mechanisms may be missing in mathematical modeling of complex phenomena in science and engineering. These mathematical models thus contain some uncertainties such as uncertain parameters. One method to estimate these parameters is based on pathwise observations, i.e., quantifying model uncertainty in the space of sample paths for system evolution. Another method is devised here to estimate uncertain parameters, or unknown system functions, based on experimental observations of probability distributions for system evolution. This is called the quantification of model uncertainties in the space of probability measures. A few examples are presented to demonstrate this method, analytically or numerically.

Methodology

Abstract:The vast majority of stochastic simulation models are imperfect in that they fail to exactly emulate real system dynamics. The inexactness of the simulation model, or model discrepancy, can impact the predictive accuracy and usefulness of the simulation for decision-making. This paper proposes a systematic framework to integrate data from both the simulation responses and the real system responses to learn this discrepancy and quantify the resulting uncertainty. Our framework addresses the theoretical and computational requirements for stochastic estimation in a Bayesian setting. It involves an optimization-based procedure to compute confidence bounds on the target outputs that elicit desirable large-sample statistical properties. We illustrate the practical value of our framework with a call center example and a manufacturing line case study.
Reconstruction of a real-world car-to-pedestrian collision using geomatics techniques and numerical simulations

Abstract:The aim of this study is to provide an improved method for traffic accident reconstruction based on geomatics techniques and numerical simulations. A combination of various techniques was used. First, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), laser scanner and structured-light scanner were used to obtain information on the accident scene, vehicle and victim. The collected traces provided detailed initial impact conditions for subsequent numerical simulations. Then, multi-body system (MBS) simulations were conducted to reconstruct the kinematics of the car-to-pedestrian collision. Finally, a finite element (FE) simulation using the THUMS model was performed to predict injuries. A real-life vehicle-pedestrian collision was used to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this method. The reconstruction result revealed that the kinematic and injury predictions of the numerical simulations effectively conformed to the surveillance video and investigation of the actual accident. UAV photogrammetry was demonstrated to be more efficient in accident data collection than hand sketch and measurement, and 3D laser scanning enabled an easier and more accurate modeling process of vehicle. The present study shows the feasibility of this method for use in traffic accident reconstruction.

Abstract:Modeling uncertainty during risk assessment is a vital component for effective decision making. Unfortunately, most of the risk assessment studies suffer from uncertainty analysis. The development of tools and techniques for capturing uncertainty in risk assessment is ongoing and there has been a substantial growth in this respect in health risk assessment. In this study, the cross-disciplinary approaches for uncertainty analyses are identified and a modified approach suitable for industrial safety risk assessment is proposed using fuzzy set theory and Monte Carlo simulation. The proposed method is applied to a benzene extraction unit (BEU) of a chemical plant. The case study results show that the proposed method provides better measure of uncertainty than the existing methods as unlike traditional risk analysis method this approach takes into account both variability and uncertainty of information into risk calculation, and instead of a single risk value this approach provides interval value of risk values for a given percentile of risk. The implications of these results in terms of risk control and regulatory compliances are also discussed.

Abstract:A simulation and analysis system of accident reconstruction is developed in this paper. Considering the great difference between accident types, the technique of artificial intelligence is used to develop the models, which rely on different parameter subsets from those adopted in other systems. And the model assumption is based on the characteristics of the given accident type. The demonstration module of three-dimensional animation is developed using the technique of virtual reality and OpenGL interface. The vehicle motion is demonstrated in the virtual world, and the scene elements can be easily changed to fit the real scene. A vehicle parameter database is also developed, and a real accident case is analyzed and simulated with both this system and PC-CRASH. The result of this system basically agrees with that of PC-CRASH system.

Abstract:Uncertainty evaluation, which is an effort to set reasonable bounds for the measurement results, is important for assessing the performances of precision measuring systems. The three dimensional measurement is affected by a large number of error sources. The distribution of the primary error sources are analyzed in this paper. The multiple-try Metropolis (MTM) algorithm is applied for sampling and uncertainty propagation for these error sources due to its advantage in dealing with large dimensional problems. The uncertainties of the three coordinates of a measured point on the workpiece r, z, and theta are evaluated before and after error separation, respectively. The differences between the two types of uncertainties are compared to find out the influence of the error separation to the uncertainty. Finally, numerical experiments are implemented to demonstrate the uncertainty assessment process.
