Abstract:We prove bordism invariance of the coarse index of complex elliptic pseudodifferential operators. In our discussion we introduce directed $c$-bordisms, whose usefulness is illustrated in the context of existence of uniformly positive scalar curvature metrics on open manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a relative index theorem for pairs of generalized Dirac operators on orbifolds which are the same at infinity. This generalizes to orbifolds a celebrated theorem of Gromov and Lawson.

Abstract:Elliptic genus was derived as the partition function in quantum field theory [26]. Mathematically it is the beautiful combination of topology of manifolds, index theory and modular forms (cf. [15], [10]). Elliptic genus for smooth manifolds has been well-studied. Recently, Borisov and Libgober ([3], [4]) proposed some definitions of elliptic genus for certain singular spaces, especially for complex orbifolds which is a global quotient M/G, here the finite group G acts holomorphically on complex variety M . Similar definitions have been introduced by string theorists in the 80s, in the study of orbifold string theory. One of their guiding principles is the modular invariance. More recently orbifold string theory has attracted the attention of geometers and topologists. For example Chen and Ruan (cf. [7], [22]) have defined orbifold cohomology and orbifold quantum cohomology groups. One of most important properties for elliptic genus is its rigidity property under compact Lie group action. For smooth manifolds, the rigidity and its generalizations have been well studied. Since orbifold elliptic genus is the partition function of orbifold string theory, it is natural to expect the rigidity property for orbifold elliptic genus. Although the global quotients from a very important class of orbifolds, many interesting orbifolds are not global quotients. For example, most of the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces of weighted projective spaces are not global quotients. In this paper we define elliptic genus for general orbifolds which generalizes the definition of Borisov and Libgober, and prove their rigidity property. We actually introduce the more general elliptic genus involving twisted bundles and proved its rigidity. The idea of considering the weights in the definition of orbifold elliptic genus comes from [4] and our proof of the K-theory version of Witten rigidity theorems [21, §4]. The proof of the rigidity is again a combination of modular invariance and the index theory. Only more complicated combinatorics are involved in the definition and the proof. This paper is organized as follows: In Sections 1 and 2 we review the equivariant index theorem on orbifolds. We define orbifold elliptic genus and prove its rigidity for almost complex orbifolds in Section 3. Finally in Section 4 we introduce orbifold elliptic genus for spin orbifolds, and will study its rigidity property on a later occasion. Abstract:We derive a local index theorem in Quillen's form for families of Cauchy-Riemann operators on orbifold Riemann surfaces (or Riemann orbisurfaces) that are quotients of the hyperbolic plane by the action of cofinite finitely generated Fuchsian groups. Each conical point (or a conjugacy class of primitive elliptic elements in the Fuchsian group) gives rise to an extra term in the local index theorem that is proportional to the symplectic form of a new Kähler metric on the moduli space of Riemann orbisurfaces. We find a simple formula for a local Kähler potential of the elliptic metric and show that when the order of elliptic element becomes large, the elliptic metric converges to the cuspidal one corresponding to a puncture on the orbisurface (or a conjugacy class of primitive parabolic elements). We also give a simple example of a relation between the elliptic metric and special values of Selberg's zeta function.

Abstract:We prove several rigidity theorems for elliptic genera associated to Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional spin manifolds. We also prove an equivariant odd index theorem for Dirac operators with involution parity and the Atiyah-Hirzebruch vanishing theorems for odd dimensional spin manifolds.
Index theory of hypoelliptic operators on Carnot manifolds

Abstract:We study the index theory of hypoelliptic operators on Carnot manifolds -- manifolds whose Lie algebra of vector fields is equipped with a filtration induced from sub-bundles of the tangent bundle. A Heisenberg pseudodifferential operator, elliptic in the calculus of van Erp-Yuncken, is hypoelliptic and Fredholm. Under some geometric conditions, we compute its Fredholm index by means of operator $K$-theory. These results extend the work of Baum-van Erp (Acta Mathematica '2014) for co-oriented contact manifolds to a methodology for solving this index problem geometrically on Carnot manifolds. Under the assumption that the Carnot manifold is regular, i.e. has isomorphic osculating Lie algebras in all fibres, and admits a flat coadjoint orbit, the methodology derived from Baum-van Erp's work is developed in full detail. In this case, we develope $K$-theoretical dualities computing the Fredholm index by means of geometric $K$-homology a la Baum-Douglas. The duality involves a Hilbert space bundle of flat orbit representations. Explicit solutions to the index problem for Toeplitz operators and operators of the form "$\Delta_H+\gamma T$" are computed in geometric $K$-homology, extending results of Boutet de Monvel and Baum-van Erp, respectively, from co-oriented contact manifolds to regular polycontact manifolds.

Abstract:We investigate elliptic operators with a symmetry that forces their index to vanish. We study the secondary index, defined modulo 2. We examine Callias-type operators with this symmetry on non-compact manifolds and establish mod 2 versions of the Gromov-Lawson relative index theorem, the Callias index theorem, and the Boutet de Monvel's index theorem for Toeplitz operators.

Orbifold Indices in Four Dimensions

Abstract:We introduce supersymmetric indices for four-dimensional gauge theories defined on $\mathscr O \times S^1$, where $\mathscr O $ is a circle bundle over the weighted complex projective line informally known as spindle. Trivial fibrations yield a four-dimensional version of the spindle index, which we obtain by applying localization to partition functions of theories on the direct product of a spindle and a two-dimensional torus. Conversely, non-trivial fibrations lead to the branched lens index, which we compute by localizing theories on the direct product of a circle and a branched covering of the lens space, possibly endowed with conical singularities. The branched lens index encompasses the maximally refined four-dimensional lens index as a special case.

Concordances in Positive Scalar Curvature and Index Theory

Abstract:We apply the strategy to study of diffeomorphisms via block diffeomorphisms to the world of positive scalar curvature (psc) metrics. For each closed psc manifold $M$, we construct the cubical set $\widetilde{\mathcal{R}^{+}_{\bullet}}(M)$ of all psc block metrics, which only encodes concordance information of psc metrics within its homotopy type. We show that $\widetilde{\mathcal{R}^{+}_{\bullet}}(M)$ is a cubical Kan set, give a geometric description for the group structure of the combinatorial homotopy groups, and construct a comparison map from the cubical model $\mathcal{R}^+_{\bullet}(M)$ of the space of psc metrics on $M$ to $\widetilde{\mathcal{R}^{+}_{\bullet}}(M)$. Next, we build a concordance-themed model for real $K$-theory based on the notion of invertible block Dirac operators and use it to factor the index difference through $\widetilde{\mathcal{R}^{+}_{\bullet}}(M)$. In the final part of this thesis, we construct the psc Hatcher spectral sequence, which is a non-index-theoretic tool to get information about the difference of $\mathcal{R}^+_{\bullet}(M)$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal{R}^{+}_{\bullet}}(M)$.

Analytic torsion for irreducible holomorphic symplectic fourfolds with involution, III: relation with the BCOV invariant

Abstract:A Calabi-Yau 4-fold of Camere-Garbagnati-Mongardi is a crepant resolution of the quotient of a hyperkähler 4-fold by an antisymplectic involution. In this paper, we compare two different types of holomorphic torsion invariants; one is the BCOV invariant of the Calabi-Yau 4-fold of Camere-Garbagnati-Mongardi, and the other is the invariant of the corresponding $K3^{[2]}$-type manifold with involution introduced by the author in the preceding papers. As an application, in some special cases, we show that the BCOV invariant of those Calabi-Yau 4-folds is expressed as the Petersson norm of a certain Borcherds product.

Abstract:Nearly Kähler and Einstein structures admit a variational characterization, where the second variation is associated with a strongly elliptic operator. This allows us to associate a Morse-like index to each structure. Our study focuses on how these indices behave under the assumption that the nearly Kähler structure admits a cohomogeneity one action. Specifically, we investigate elements of the index that also exhibit cohomogeneity one symmetry, reducing the analysis to an ODE eigenvalue problem. We apply our discussion to the two inhomogeneous examples constructed by Foscolo and Haskins. We obtain non-trivial lower bounds on the Hitchin index and Einstein co-index for the inhomogeneous nearly Kähler structure on $S^3\times S^3$, answering a question of Karigiannis and Lotay.

Bordism invariance of orientations and real APS index theory

Abstract:We show that orientations and Floer gradings for elliptic differential operators can be propagated through bordisms. This is based on a new perspective on APS indices for elliptic boundary value problems over the real numbers. Several applications to moduli spaces of this new bordism-theoretic point of view will be given in the sequel.

Abstract:We give a uniform construction of the higher indices of elliptic operators associated to Alexander-Spanier cocycles of either parity in terms of a pairing a la Connes between the K-theory and the cyclic cohomology of the algebra of complete symbols of pseudodifferential operators, implemented by means of a relative form of the Chern character in cyclic homology. While the formula for the lowest index of an elliptic operator D on a closed manifold M (which coincides with its Fredholm index) reproduces the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, our formula for the highest index of D (associated to a volume cocycle) yields an extension to arbitrary manifolds of any dimension of the Helton-Howe formula for the trace of multicommutators of classical Toeplitz operators on odd-dimensional spheres. In fact, the totality of higher analytic indices for an elliptic operator D amount to a representation of the Connes-Chern character of the K-homology cycle determined by D in terms of expressions which extrapolate the Helton-Howe formula below the dimension of M.

Abstract:In this paper, we study topological quantum mechanical models on symplectic orbifolds. The correlation map gives an explicit orbifold version of quantum HKR map. The exact semi-classical approximation in this model leads to a geometric and quantum field theoretic interpretation of the orbifold algebraic index.

Abstract:We develop a complete obstruction theory for the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index of a compact connected 4-dimensional manifold with free involution. This $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index, equal to the minimum integer $n$ for which there exists an equivariant map with target the $n$-sphere with antipodal involution, is computed in two steps using cohomology with twisted coefficients. The key ingredient is a spectral sequence computing twisted cohomology of the orbit space of a free involution on odd complex projective spaces. We illustrate the main results with various examples including computation of the secondary obstruction.
