Abstract:This is the Preface to the special issue of 'International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics', v.3, N.1 (2006) dedicated to the 50th aniversary of gauge gravitation theory. It addresses the geometry underlying gauge gravitation theories, their higher-dimensional, supergauge and non-commutatuve extensions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the gauge gravitation theory from a geometric perspective. Specifically, it aims to extend the Yang - Mills gauge theory, which describes the interactions of elementary particles, to the field of gravitation. The paper discusses early models starting from general covariant transformations of the Lorentz group and the Poincaré group, as well as current extended theories such as supergravity, high - dimensional gravitation, non - commutative gravitation and quantum gravitation. ### Main Problems 1. **Geometric Basis of Gauge Gravitation Theory**: - The paper explores the geometric structures in the gauge gravitation theory, especially the application of fiber bundles in classical field theory. This includes the concepts of principal bundles, associated bundles and their connections. 2. **General Covariant Transformations**: - In order to be compatible with Einstein's General Relativity, the gauge gravitation theory must be able to handle general covariant transformations. The paper discusses the concepts of natural bundles and gauge - natural bundles, which can support general covariant transformations. 3. **Linear Frame Bundles and Affine Frame Bundles**: - Linear frame bundles and affine frame bundles play important roles in the gauge gravitation theory. The paper discusses in detail the connections on these bundles and their applications in the gravitation theory. 4. **Higgs Fields and Symmetry Breaking**: - The paper also explores the role of Higgs fields in the gauge gravitation theory, especially in symmetry breaking. Higgs fields can be interpreted as global sections of certain quotient bundles. 5. **Supergravity and High - Dimensional Gravitation**: - Supergravity theory and high - dimensional gravitation theory are important extensions of the gauge gravitation theory. The paper discusses the geometric structures and physical meanings in these theories. 6. **Non - commutative Gravitation**: - Non - commutative gravitation is another important research direction. The paper discusses the application of Connes' non - commutative geometry in the gravitation theory, especially representing the gravitational action through spectral triples. ### Conclusion The paper systematically explores the basis and extensions of the gauge gravitation theory by geometric methods, aiming to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the gauge theory of gravitation. This not only helps to unify the descriptions of fundamental forces, but also provides a new perspective for the research of quantum gravitation.
