Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. It is well known that $F_{p-(\frac p5)}\equiv 0\pmod{p}$, where $\{F_n\}_{n\ge0}$ is the Fibonacci sequence and $(-)$ is the Jacobi symbol. In this paper we show that if $p\not=5$ then we may determine $F_{p-(\frac p5)}$ mod $p^3$ in the following way: $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{\binom{2k}k}{(-16)^k}\equiv\left(\frac{p}5\right)\left(1+\frac{F_{p-(\frac {p}5)}}2\right)\pmod{p^3}.$$ We also use Lucas quotients to determine $\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\binom{2k}k/m^k$ modulo $p^2$ for any integer $m\not\equiv0\pmod{p}$; in particular, we obtain $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{\binom{2k}k}{16^k}\equiv\left(\frac3{p}\right)\pmod{p^2}.$$ In addition, we pose three conjectures for further research.

Abstract:Let $(F_n)_{n \geq 1}$ be the sequence of Fibonacci numbers. For all integers $a$ and $b \geq 1$ with $\gcd(a, b) = 1$, let $[a^{-1} \!\bmod b]$ be the multiplicative inverse of $a$ modulo $b$, which we pick in the usual set of representatives $\{0, 1, \dots, b-1\}$. Put also $[a^{-1} \!\bmod b] := \infty$ when $\gcd(a, b) > 1$. We determine all positive integers $m$ and $n$ such that $[F_m^{-1} \bmod F_n]$ is a Fibonacci number. This extends a previous result of Prempreesuk, Noppakaew, and Pongsriiam, who considered the special case $m \in \{3, n - 3, n - 2, n - 1\}$ and $n \geq 7$. Let $(L_n)_{n \geq 1}$ be the sequence of Lucas numbers. We also determine all positive integers $m$ and $n$ such that $[L_m^{-1} \bmod L_n]$ is a Lucas number.

Abstract:Let {F(n)} be the Fibonacci sequence defined by F0 = 0, F1 = 1, F(n) + 1 = F(n) + F(n-1) (n greater-than-or-equal-to 1). It is well known that F(p-)(5/p) = 0 (mod p) for any odd prime p, where (-) denotes the Legendre symbol. In 1960 D.D. Wall [13] asked whether p2/F(p-)(5/p) is always impossible; up to now this is still open. In this paper the sum [GRAPHICS] is expressed in terms of Fibonacci numbers. As applications we obtain a new formula for the Fibonacci quotient F(p-)(5/p)/p and a criterion for the relation p/F(p-1)/4 (if p = 1 (mod 4)), where p not-equal 5 is an odd prime. We also prove that the affirmative answer to Wall's question implies the first case of FLT (Fermat's last theorem); from this it follows that the first case of FLT holds for those exponents which are (odd) Fibonacci primes or Lucas primes.

Abstract:Let $S_b(n)$ denote the sum of the squares of the digits of the positive integer $n$ in base $b\geq2$. It is well-known that the sequence of iterates of $S_b(n)$ terminates in a fixed point or enters a cycle. Let $N=2n-1$, $n\geq2$. It is shown that if $b=F_{N+1}$, then a cycle of $S_b$ exists with initial term $F_{N}=F_{0}.F_{N}$, and terminal element $F_{n}.F_{n-1}$ if $n$ is even, or terminal element $F_{n-1}.F_{n}$ if $n$ is odd. Similarly, Let $N=2n+1$, $n\geq1$. If $b=F_{N-1}$, then a cycle of $S_b$ exists with initial term $F_{N}=F_{2}.F_{N-2}$, and terminal element $F_{n}.F_{n+1}$ if $n$ is even, or terminal element $F_{n+1}.F_{n}$ if $n$ is odd. Furthermore, the cycles also admit extension as an arithmetic sequence of cycles of $S_b$ with base $b=F_{N+1}+F_{N+2}k$ and $b=F_{N-1}+F_{N-2}k$, respectively. Some fixed points of $S_b$ with $b$ a Fibonacci base are shown to exist. Lastly, both cycles and fixed points admit further generalization to Pell polynomials.

Abstract:We classify all solution triples with Fibonacci components to the equation $a^2+b^2+c^2=3abc+m,$ for positive $m$. We show that for $m=2$ they are precisely $(1,F(b),F(b+2))$, with even $b$; for $m=21$, there exist exactly two Fibonacci solutions $(1,2,8)$ and $(2,2,13)$ and for any other $m$ there exists at most one Fibonacci solution, which, in case it exists, is always minimal (i.e. it is a root of a Markoff tree). Moreover, we show that there is an infinite number of values of $m$ admitting exactly one such solution.

Abstract:The following magic trick is at the center of this paper. While the audience writes the first ten terms of a Fibonacci-like sequence (the sequence following the same recursion as the Fibonacci sequence), the magician calculates the sum of these ten terms very fast by multiplying the 7th term by 11. This trick is based on the divisibility properties of partial sums of Fibonacci-like sequences. We find the maximum Fibonacci number that divides the sum of the Fibonacci numbers 1 through $n$. We discuss the generalization of the trick for other second-order recurrences. We show that a similar trick exists for Pell-like sequences and does not exist for Jacobhstal-like sequences.

Abstract:Let ftm = 0111010010001... be the analogue of the Thue-Morse sequence in Fibonacci representation. In this note we show how, using the Walnut theorem-prover, to obtain a measure of its complexity, previously studied by Jamet, Popoli, and Stoll. We strengthen one of their theorems and disprove one of their conjectures.

Abstract:This paper describes a class of sequences that are in many ways similar to Fibonacci sequences: given n, sum the previous two terms and divide them by the largest possible power of n. The behavior of such sequences depends on n. We analyze these sequences for small n: 2, 3, 4, and 5. Surprisingly these behaviors are very different. We also talk about any n. Many statements about these sequences are difficult or impossible to prove, but they can be supported by probabilistic arguments, we have plenty of those in this paper. We also introduce ten new sequences. Most of the new sequences are also related to Fibonacci numbers proper, not just free Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the diophantine equation σ_2(n)-n^2=An+B. We prove that except for finitely many computable solutions, all the solutions to this equation with (A,B)=(L_2m,F_2m^2-1) are n=F_2k+1F_2k+2m+1, where both F_2k+1 and F_2k+2m+1 are Fibonacci primes. Meanwhile, we show that the twin primes conjecture holds if and only if the equation σ_2(n)-n^2=2n+5 has infinitely many solutions.

Abstract:Let F n be the nth Fibonacci number. Order of appearance z ( n ) of a natural number n is defined as smallest natural number k, such that n divides F k . In 1930, Lehmer proved that all solutions of equation z ( n ) = n ± 1 are prime numbers. In this paper, we solve equation z ( n ) = n + l for | l | ∈ { 1 , ... , 9 } . Our method is based on the p-adic valuation of Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:In this paper we establish some sophisticated congruences involving central binomial coefficients and Fibonacci numbers. For example, we show that if $p\not=2,5$ is a prime then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_{2k}\binom{2k}{k}=(-1)^{[p/5]}(1-(p/5)) (mod p^2)$$ and $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_{2k+1}\binom{2k}k=(-1)^{[p/5]}(p/5) (mod p^2).$$ We also obtain similar results for some other second-order recurrences and raise several conjectures.

Abstract:The Fibonacci sequence is periodic modulo every positive integer $m>1$, and perhaps more surprisingly, each period has exactly 1, 2, or 4 zeros that are evenly spaced, which also holds true for more general $K$-Fibonacci sequences. This paper proves several conjectures connecting the zeros in the Pisano period to the prime factors of $K$-Fibonacci numbers. The congruence classes of indices for $K$-Fibonacci numbers that are multiples of the prime factors of $m$ completely determine the number of zeroes in the Pisano period modulo $m$.

Abstract:In this note we consider fractions of the form 1/m and their floating-point representation in various arithmetic bases. For instance, what is 1/7 in base 2005? And, what about 1/4? We give a simple algorithm to answer these questions. In addition, we discuss an extension of Midy's theorem whose proof relies on elementary modular arithmetic.
