Abstract:Elementarily free groups are the finitely generated groups with the same elementary theory as free groups. We prove that elementarily free groups are subgroup separable, answering a question of Zlil Sela.

Abstract:In this note we give a new proof of the fact that an elementary subgroup (in the sense of first-order theory) of a non abelian free group $\mathbb{F}$ must be a free factor. The proof is based on definability of orbits of elements of under automorphisms of $\mathbb{F}$ fixing a large enough subset of $\mathbb{F}$.

Abstract:Consider the fundamental group of an arbitrary graph of groups and some root class of groups, i.e., a class containing a nontrivial group and closed under subgroups, extensions, and unrestricted direct products of the form , where and is an isomorphic copy of for each . We provide some criterion for the separability by of a finitely generated abelian subgroup of valid when the group satisfies an analog of the Baumslag filtration condition. This enables us to describe the -separable finitely generated abelian subgroups for the fundamental groups of some graphs of groups with central edge subgroups.

Abstract:Consider a one-ended word-hyperbolic group. If it is the fundamental group of a graph of free groups with cyclic edge groups then either it is the fundamental group of a surface or it contains a finitely generated one-ended subgroup of infinite index. As a corollary, the same holds for limit groups. We also obtain a characterisation of surfaces with boundary among free groups equipped with peripheral structures.

Abstract:Separable elements in Weyl groups are generalizations of the well-known class of separable permutations in symmetric groups. Gaetz and Gao showed that for any pair $(X,Y)$ of subsets of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, the multiplication map $X\times Y\rightarrow \mathfrak{S}_n$ is a splitting (i.e., a length-additive bijection) of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ if and only if $X$ is the generalized quotient of $Y$ and $Y$ is a principal lower order ideal in the right weak order generated by a separable element. They conjectured this result can be extended to all finite Weyl groups. In this paper, we classify all separable and minimal non-separable signed permutations in terms of forbidden patterns and confirm the conjecture of Gaetz and Gao for Weyl groups of type $B$.

Abstract:We use Gersten's generalization of Whitehead's algorithm to determine whether a given finitely generated subgroup of a free group $F$ is elliptic in an elementary cyclic splitting of $F$. We provide a similar result for all elementary cyclic splittings of a free group of rank two and partial results towards an algorithm for ellipticity in elementary cyclic splittings of $F$ as an HNN-extension.

Abstract:We show that a free-by-cyclic group with a polynomially growing monodromy is subgroup separable exactly when it is virtually $F_n \times \mathbb{Z}$. We also prove that random deficiency 1 groups are not subgroup separable with positive asymptotic probability.

Abstract:We consider groups of automorphisms of locally finite trees, and give conditions on its subgroups that imply that they are not elementary amenable. This covers all known examples of groups that are not elementary amenable and act on the trees: groups of intermediate growths and Basilica group, by giving a more straightforward proof. Moreover, we deduce that all finitely generated branch groups are not elementary amenable, which was conjectured by Grigorchuk.

Abstract:A proof is given that a permutation group in which different finite sets have different stabilizers cannot satisfy any group law. For locally compact topological groups with this property, almost all finite subsets of the group are shown to generate free subgroups. Abstract:We consider embeddings in a torsion-free hyperbolic group which are elementary in the sense of first-order logic. We give a description of these embeddings in terms of Sela's hyperbolic towers. We deduce as a corollary that subgroups elementarily embedded in finitely generated free groups are free factors.

Abstract:We use the theory of group actions on profinite trees to prove that the fundamental group of a finite, 1-acylindrical graph of free groups with finitely generated edge groups is conjugacy separable. This has several applications: we prove that positive, $C'(1/6)$ one-relator groups are conjugacy separable; we provide a conjugacy separable version of the Rips construction; we use this latter to provide an example of two finitely presented, residually finite groups that have isomorphic profinite completions, such that one is conjugacy separable and the other does not even have solvable conjugacy problem.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a non-positively curved cube complex with hyperbolic fundamental group. We prove that $\pi_1(X)$ has a non-free subgroup of infinite index unless $\pi_1(X)$ is either free or a surface group, answering a question of Wise. A similar result for one-relator groups follows, answering a question posed by several authors. The proof relies on a careful analysis of free and cyclic splittings of cubulated groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notion of $L^2$-subgroup rigid groups and demonstrate that free groups are $L^2$-subgroup rigid. As a consequence, we establish the equivalence between compressibility, inertness, strong inertness, and $L^2$-independence for a finitely generated subgroup of a free group, confirming a conjecture by Dicks and Ventura as well as the one by Antolin and Jaikin-Zapirain.

Abstract:It is shown that every separable abelian topological group is isomorphic with a topological subgroup of a monothetic group (that is, a topological group with a single topological generator). In particular, every separable metrizable abelian group embeds into a metrizable monothetic group. More generally, we describe all topological groups that can be embedded into monothetic groups: they are exactly abelian topological groups of weight $\leq\frak c$ covered by countably many translations of every nonempty open subset.

Abstract:Ancel, Dobrowolski, and Grabowski (Studia Math., 1994) proved that every countable discrete subgroup of the additive group of a normed space is free Abelian, hence isomorphic to the direct sum of a certain number of copies of the additive group of the integers. In the present paper, we take a set-theoretic approach based on the theory of elementary submodels and the Singular Compactness Theorem to remove the cardinality constraint from their result and prove that indeed every discrete subgroup of the additive group of a normed space is free Abelian.
