Abstract:Based on the resistively shunted junction dynamics, we numerically investigate the superconducting phase transitions of two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays exposed to a dilute external field with the magnetic flux density f=1/25. Dynamic scaling analysis of current-voltage characteristics shows that a Kosterlitz–Thouless–Berezinskii (KTB) phase transition occurs at a finite temperature in the absence of disorder. When the disorder is introduced into the bond, the phase transition would be driven into a non-KTB type, where a possible glass transition is suggested. The effects of the bond disorder on the critical temperature and critical exponents are also discussed. The further experimental works to realize well known KTB and glass transitions in Josephson junction arrays are clearly called for.

Abstract:The current-voltage characteristics of a positionally disordered superconducting Josephson-junction network are investigated numerically. An efficient algorithm is proposed which enables one to simulate networks with up to 1024 x 1024 nodes. The I-V curves are highly nonlinear in the ordered phase. For a given temperature and external current, it is observed that the resistivity increases with disorder strength. This is in contrast to the behaviour of type-II superconductors in the mixed state where disorder reduces the resistivity through vortex pinning. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Depinning and Creep in Josephson Junction Arrays in Weak Magnetic Fields

Abstract:Based on resistively shunted junction dynamics, we have numerically studied the depinning transition and thermally activated creep motion of vortices in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays exposed to a weak external field with the filling factor $f=1/25$. Whether the bond disorder is introduced into the system or not, a continuous depinning transition is found at zero temperature. By means of scaling analysis of the current-voltage characteristics, a non-Arrhenius creep law is observed at finite temperatures, with the existence of two universality classes depending on the strength of the bond disorder. The effects of the disorder on the critical current and critical exponents are also discussed.

Abstract:The nonequilibrium phase transition of two-dimensional fully frustrated Josephson junction arrays driven by external currents is studied in the framework of the short-time dynamic scaling approach. Within the resistively shunted junction dynamics, besides the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$, the static and dynamic critical exponents $2\ensuremath{\beta}∕\ensuremath{\nu}$, $\ensuremath{\nu}$, and $z$ are obtained. The resulting values of ${T}_{c}$ are consistent with previous steady-state simulations and decrease with the increase of currents. It is found that the values of the exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}$ are not sensitive to external currents, while the values of $2\ensuremath{\beta}∕\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $z$ are strongly current dependent.
Dynamical Phase Transition in Two-Dimensional Fully Frustrated Josephson Junction Arrays with Resistively Shunted Junction Dynamics

Abstract:. The dynamical phase transitions in two-dimensional fully frustrated Josephson junction arrays at zero temperature are investigated numerically with the resistively shunted junction model through the fluctuating twist boundary condition. The model is subjected to a driving current with nonzero orthogonal components i x , i y parallel to both axes of the square lattice. We find a roughly lattice size independent phase diagram with three dynamical phases: a pinned vortex lattice phase, a moving vortex lattice phase and a moving plastic phase. The phase diagram shows a direct transition from the pinned vortex to the moving vortex phase and the separation of the pinned vortex and the moving plastic phases. The time-dependent voltages v x and v y are periodic in the moving vortex lattice phase. But they are aperiodic in the moving plastic phase, resulting in non-monotonic characteristics and hysteresis in the current-voltage curves. It is found that the characteristic frequency is twice the time-averaged voltage in the moving vortex phase and around the time-averaged voltage in the plastic flow regime.

Abstract:A numerical study of Nernst signal was carried out in the two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays,by using the time-dependent Gintzburg-Landau dynamics.The Nernst signal as a function of the temperature and external fields were obtained through extensive simulations.The result showed that huge Nernst signal occured when the temperature was above the superconducting transition temperature.Moreover,a non-monotonous behavior of Nernst signal with respect to the magnetic field was clearly appeared.The findings were qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations in some high-Tc Cuprates.

Abstract:By employing mutual-inductance technique and using a high-sensitive bridge, we have thoroughly investigated (both experimentally and theoretically) the temperature and magnetic field dependence of complex AC susceptibility of artificially prepared highly ordered (periodic) two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays (2D-JJA) of both shunted and unshunted Nb-based tunnel junctions as well as disordered three-dimensional arrays (3D-JJA). This paper reviews some of our latest results regarding the influence of non-uniform critical current density profile on magnetic field behavior of AC susceptibility in 2D-JJA, and the origin of remanent magnetization in disordered 3D-JJAs.

Anomalous Finite-Size Effect in Superconducting Josephson Junction Arrays.

Abstract:We show that a previously reported discrepancy between simulations of superconducting Josephson junction arrays and the theoretical analysis of Ambegaokar, Halperin, Nelson, and Siggia (AHNS) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 40, 783 (1978)] is rooted in a peculiar finite-size effect under periodic boundary conditions. Our simulation results for the largest array support the power-law I-V curves predicted by AHNS. Analysis of the vortex dynamics reveals two intrinsic length scales set by the applied current, which define three size regimes with distinctive I-V characteristics.

Abstract:By improving resolution of home-made mutual-inductance measurements technique, a pronounced step-like structure (with the number of steps n=4 for all AC fields) has been observed in the temperature dependence of AC susceptibility in artificially prepared two-dimensional Josephson Junction Arrays (2D-JJA) of unshunted Nb-AlO_x-Nb junctions with \beta_L(4.2K)=30. Using a single-plaquette approximation of the overdamped 2D-JJA model, we were able to successfully fit our data assuming that steps are related to the geometric properties of the plaquette. The number of steps n corresponds to the number of flux quanta that can be screened by the maximum critical current of the junctions. The steps are predicted to manifest themselves in arrays with the inductance related parameter \beta_L(T) matching a "quantization" condition \beta_L(0)=2\pi (n+1).

Abstract:A pronounced resonance-like structure has been observed in the current dependence of AC susceptibility for two-dimensional array of unshunted Nb-AlOx-Nb Josephson junctions. Using a single-plaquette approximation, we were able to successfully fit our data assuming that resonance structure is related to the geometric (inductive) properties of the array.

Disorder and Critical Current Variability in Josephson Junctions

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the origins of observed variations in the critical currents of Nb/Al-AlO$_x$/Nb Josephson junctions in terms of various types of disorder. We consider the following disorder sources: vacancies within the Al layer; thickness variations in the AlO$_x$ layer; and "pinholes" (i.e., point contacts) within the AlO$_x$ layer. The calculations are all performed by solving the microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian self-consistently. It is found that a small concentration of vacancies within the Al layer is sufficient to suppress the critical current, while the presence of a small number of thick regions of the oxide layer induces a similar effect as well. The pinhole scenario is found to result in anomalous behavior that resembles neither that of a pure tunnel junction nor that of an SNS junction, but a regime that interpolates between these two limits. We comment on the degree to which each of the three scenarios describes the actual situation present in these junctions.

Magnetic field oscillations of the critical current in long ballistic graphene Josephson junctions

Abstract:We study the Josephson current in long ballistic superconductor-monolayer graphene-superconductor junctions. As a first step, we have developed an efficient computational approach to calculate the Josephson current in tight-binding systems. This approach can be particularly useful in the long junction limit, which has hitherto attracted less theoretical interest but has recently become experimentally relevant. We use this computational approach to study the dependence of the critical current on the junction geometry, doping level, and an applied perpendicular magnetic field. In zero magnetic field we find a good qualitative agreement with the recent experiment of Ben Shalom et al. (Reference[12]) for the length dependence of the critical current. For highly doped samples our numerical calculations show a broad agreement with the results of the quasiclassical formalism. In this case the critical current exhibits Fraunhofer-like oscillations as a function of the magnetic field. However, for lower doping levels, where the cyclotron orbit becomes comparable to the characteristic geometrical length scales of the system, deviations from the results of the quasiclassical formalism appear. We argue that due to the exceptional tunability and long mean free path of graphene systems a new regime can be explored where geometrical and dynamical effects are equally important to understand the magnetic field dependence of the critical current.

Magnetic interference pattern in planar SNS Josephson junctions

Abstract:We study the Josephson current through a ballistic normal metal layer of thickness $D$ on which two superconducting electrodes are deposited within a distance $L$ of each other. In the presence of an ({\it in-layer}) magnetic field we find that the oscillations of the critical current $I_c(\Phi)$ with the magnetic flux $\Phi$ are significantly different from an ordinary magnetic interference pattern. Depending on the ratio $L/D$ and temperature, $I_c(\Phi)$-oscillations can have a period smaller than flux quantum $\Phi_0$, nonzero minima and damping rate much smaller than $1/\Phi$. Similar anomalous magnetic interference pattern was recently observed experimentally.

Fate of the Josephson effect and odd-frequency pairing in superconducting junctions with unconventional magnets

Abstract:We consider Josephson junctions formed by coupling two conventional superconductors via an unconventional magnet and investigate the formation of Andreev bound states, their impact on the Josephson effect, and the emergent superconducting correlations. We focus on unconventional magnets known as $d$-wave altermagnets and $p$-wave magnets. We find that the Andreev bound states in $d$-wave altermagnet and $p_y$-wave magnet Josephson junctions strongly depend on the transverse momentum, with a spin splitting and low-energy minima as a function of the superconducting phase difference $\varphi$. In contrast, the Andreev bound states for $p_{x}$-wave magnets are insensitive to the transverse momentum. We show that the Andreev bound states can be probed by the local density of states in the middle of the junction, which also reveals that $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$- and $p$-wave magnet junctions are prone to host zero energy peaks. While the zero-energy peak in $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave altermagnet junctions tends to oscillate with the magnetic order, it remains robust in $p$-wave magnet junctions. We also demonstrate that the critical currents in $d$-wave altermagnet Josephson junctions exhibit an oscillatory decay with the increase of the magnetic order, while the oscillations are absent in $p$-wave magnet junctions albeit the currents exhibit a slow decay. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that the interplay of the Josephson effect and unconventional magnetic order of $d$-wave altermagnets and $p$-wave magnets originates from odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave superconducting correlations that are otherwise absent. Our results can serve as a guide to pursue the new functionality of Josephson junctions based on unconventional magnets.

Abstract:By introducing a realistic model of nanogranular superconductors (NGS) based on 2D arrays of Josephson nanocontacts (created by a network of twin-boundary dislocations with strain fields acting as insulating barriers between hole-rich domains), in this Chapter we present some novel phenomena related to mechanical, magnetic, electric and transport properties of NGS in underdoped single crystals. In particular, we consider chemically induced magnetoelectric effects and flux driven temperature oscillations of thermal expansion coefficient. We also predict a giant enhancement of the nonlinear thermal conductivity of NGS reaching up to 500% when the intrinsically induced chemoelectric field (created by the gradient of the chemical potential due to segregation of hole producing oxygen vacancies) closely matches the externally produced thermoelectric field. The estimates of the model parameters suggest quite an optimistic possibility to experimentally realize these promising and important for applications effects in non-stoichiometric NGS and artificially prepared arrays of Josephson nanocontacts.

Magnetic interference patterns in long disordered Josephson junctions

Abstract:We study a diffusive superconductor - normal metal - superconductor (SNS) junction in an external magnetic field. In the limit of a long junction, we find that the form of the dependence of the Josephson current on the field and on the length of the junction depends on the ratio between the junction width and the length associated with the magnetic field. A certain critical ratio between these two length scales separates two different regimes. In narrow junctions, the critical current exhibits a pure decay as a function of the junction length or of the magnetic field. In wide junctions, the critical current exhibits damped oscillations as a function of the same parameters. This damped oscillating behavior differs from the Fraunhofer pattern typical for short or tunnel junctions. In wide and long junctions, superconducting pair correlations and supercurrent are localized along the edges of the junction.

Tunable second-order Josephson response in altermagnets

Abstract:We study the influence of external electric and Zeeman fields on the Josephson response in a planar superconductor/altermagnet/superconductor junction. Remarkably, we discover that the current-phase relation can be forward- or backward-skewed due to significant second-order Josephson response. It decisively depends on the altermagnetic field strength. Such a second-order Josephson response can be measured directly by double SQUID devices. Additionally, the skewness can be effectively manipulated by electric gating. Furthermore, we reveal two additional impacts of external fields on the Josephson current: (i) Fields can induce 0-$\pi$ transitions. (ii) Fields can substantially enhance the critical current. Our study opens a new avenue for exploring the second-order Josephson response in altermagnets.

Abstract:The ability of magnetic materials to modify superconducting systems is an active research area for possible applications in thermoelectricity, quantum sensing, and spintronics. We consider the fundamental properties of the Josephson effect in a third class of magnetic materials beyond ferromagnets and antiferromagnets: altermagnets. We show that despite having no net magnetization, altermagnets induce $0$-$\pi$ oscillations. The decay length and oscillation period of the Josephson coupling are qualitatively different from ferromagnetic junctions and depend on the crystallographic orientation of the altermagnet. The Josephson effect in altermagnets thus serves a dual purpose: it acts as a signature that distinguishes altermagnetism from conventional (anti)ferromagnetism and offers a way to tune the supercurrent via flow direction anisotropy.

Abstract:We report a theoretical study of multiterminal Josephson junctions under the influence of a magnetic field $B$. We consider a ballistic rectangular two-dimensional metal $N_0$ connected by the edges to the left, right, top and bottom superconductors $S_L$, $S_R$, $S_T$ and $S_B$, respectively. We numerically calculate in the large-gap approximation the critical current $I_c$ versus $B$ between the left and right $S_L$ and $S_R$ for various aspect ratios, with the top and bottom $S_T$ and $S_B$ playing the role of superconducting mirrors. We find the critical current $I_c$ to be enhanced by orders of magnitude, especially at long distance, due to the phase rigidity provided by the mirrors. We obtain superconducting quantum interference device-like magnetic oscillations. With symmetric couplings, the self-consistent superconducting phase variables of the top and bottom mirrors take the values $0$ or $\pi$, as for emerging Ising degrees of freedom. We propose a simple effective Josephson junction circuit model that is compatible with these microscopic numerical calculations. From the $I_c(B)$ patterns we infer where the supercurrent flows in various device geometries. In particular in the elongated geometry, we show that the supercurrent flows between all pairs of contacts, which allows exploring the full phase space of the relevant phase differences.

Abstract:Magnetic Josephson Junctions (MJJs) are a special class of hybrid systems where antagonistic correlations coexist, thus providing a key for advances in weak superconductivity, superconducting spintronics and quantum computation. So far, the memory properties of MJJs have been mostly investigated in view of digital electronics and for spintronic devices at liquid-helium temperature. At the operating temperature of quantum circuits, a magnetic order can rise in a Superconductor (S) at the S/Ferromagnet (F) interface, i.e., the inverse proximity effect (IPE), thus leading to a significant modification of the magnetic field patterns in MJJs. In this work, we have carried out a comparative investigation of the magnetic behavior of tunnel MJJs with a strong ferromagnetic layer inserted in the layout of both Nb and Al JJs, respectively. The comparative analysis validates the crucial role of the temperature, the fundamental scaling energies of S/F coupling systems, and the transparency of the S/F interface. This investigation points out that the IPE is a key aspect to consider when designing tunnel MJJs operating well below 4 K and thus in the perspective of hybrid superconducting quantum architectures.
