Abstract:The detection of gravitational radiation raises some subtle issues having to do with the coordinate invariance of general relativity. This paper explains these issues and their resolution by using an analogy with the Aharonov-Bohm effect of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Phenomena in gauge theory are often described in the physics literature via a specific choice of gauge. In foundational and philosophical discussions this is often criticized as introducing gauge dependence, and contrasted against (often aspirational) "gauge-invariant" descriptions of the physics. I argue, largely in the context of scalar electrodynamics, that this is misguided, and that descriptions of a physical process within a specific gauge are in fact gauge-invariant descriptions. However, most of them are non-local descriptions of that physics, and I suggest that this ought to be the real objection to such descriptions. I explore the unitary gauge as the exception to this nonlocality and consider its strengths and limitations, as well as (more briefly) its extension beyond scalar electrodynamics.

Gauge invariance of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in a quantum electrodynamics framework

Abstract:The gauge invariance of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect with a quantum treatment for the electromagnetic field is demonstrated. We provide an exact solution for the electromagnetic ground energy due to the interaction of the quantum electromagnetic field with the classical charges and currents that act as sources of the potentials in a classical description, in the Lorenz gauge. Then, we use first-order perturbation theory to compute an extra change on the electromagnetic ground energy due to the presence of a quantum charged particle with known wave function in the system. This energy in general depends on the quantum particle path in an interferometer, what results in an AB phase difference between the paths. The gauge invariance of this AB phase difference is then shown for the magnetic, electric, and the recently proposed electrodynamic versions of the AB effect. However, the AB phase difference could depend on the gauge for nonclosed paths, what reinforces the view that it only can be measured in closed paths.

Gauge-Invariant Scalar-Induced Gravitational Waves from Physical Observables

Abstract:This paper discusses the gauge issue touching the gravitational waves induced at the second order by the scalar modes of cosmological perturbations. These waves are known to depend on the gauge used for their calculation. In this paper, we propose a simple method of obtaining physically meaningful expressions for such scalar-induced gravitational waves at the leading order. The method is centred on well-defined observables, such as the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor, or the Cotton tensor of a slicing of spacetime, which vanish in the background and do not depend linearly on the scalar perturbations. Generalizing the Stewart-Walker lemma, it is shown that the gravitational waves contributing to such observables at the second order are automatically gauge-invariant, even when the observable itself does not vanish at the first order. In each case, the scalar-induced gravitational waves are related to the ones computed in the Newtonian gauge, first for a general background, and then for the particular case of a spacetime dominated by either radiation or cold matter.

Abstract:The gauge invariant non local quantum dynamics of the Aharonov-Bohm effect can be tested experimentally by measuring the instantaneous shift of the velocity distribution occurring when the particle passes by the flux line. It is shown that in relativistic quantum theory it is possible to measure the instantaneous velocity with accuracy sufficient to detect the change of the velocity distribution. In non relativistic quantum theory the instantaneous velocity can be measured to any desired accuracy.

A Coordinate-Independent Formalism for Detecting High-Frequency Gravitational Waves

Abstract:In an external electric or magnetic field, a gravitational wave (GW) may be converted into electromagnetic radiation. We present a coordinate-invariant framework to describe the GW signal in a detector that is based on this effect, such as cavities for axion searches. In this framework, we pay special attention to the definition of manifestly coordinate-independent expressions for the electromagnetic fields that an external observer would detect. A careful assessment of the detector's perceived motion allows us to treat both its mechanical and its electromagnetic response to the GW consistently. We further introduce well-defined approximations for which this motion may be neglected, and hence provide suggestions on which coordinate frame is suitable to characterise the GW signal in practice. We illustrate our findings in two examples, an infinitesimally thin rod and a spherical electromagnetic cavity.

Invariance transformations in wave-optics lensing: implications for gravitational-wave astrophysics and cosmology

Abstract:Gravitational lensing offers unique opportunities to learn about the astrophysical origin of distant sources, the abundance of intervening objects acting as lenses, and gravity and cosmology in general. However, all this information can only be retrieved as long as one can disentangle each effect from the finite number of observables. In the geometric optics regime, typical of electromagnetic radiation, when the wavelength of the lensed signal is small compared to the size of the lens, there are invariance transformations that change the mass of the lens and the source-lens configuration but leave the observables unchanged. Neglecting this ``mass-sheet degeneracy'' can lead to biased lens parameters or unrealistic low uncertainties, which could then transfer to an incorrect cosmography study. This might be different for gravitational waves as their long wavelengths can be comparable to the lens size and lensing enters into the wave-optics limit. We explore the existence of invariance transformations in the wave-optics regime of gravitational-wave lensing, extending previous work and examining the implications for astrophysical and cosmological studies. We study these invariance transformations using three different methods of increasing level of complexity: template mismatch, Fisher Matrix, and Bayesian parameter estimation. We find that, for a sufficiently loud signal, the degeneracy is partially broken and the lens and cosmological parameters, e.g. $H_0$, can be retrieved independently and unbiased. In current ground-based detectors, though, considering also population studies, a strong constraint on these parameters seems quite remote and the prevailing degeneracy implies a larger uncertainty in the lens model reconstruction. However, with better sensitivity of the third-generation ground-based detectors, a meaningful constraint on $H_0$ is possible to obtain.

Abstract:We revisit a question asked by Dyson: "Is a graviton detectable?" We demonstrate that in both Dyson's original sense and in a more modern measurement-theoretic sense, it is possible to construct a detector sensitive to single gravitons, and in fact a variety of existing and near-term gravitational wave detectors can achieve this. However, while such a signal would be consistent with the quantization of the gravitational field, we draw on results from quantum optics to show how the same signal could just as well be explained via classical gravitational waves. We outline the kind of measurements that would be needed to demonstrate quantization of gravitational radiation and explain why these are substantially more difficult than simply counting graviton clicks or observing gravitational noise in an interferometer, and likely impossible to perform in practice.

The equivalence principle and inertial-gravitational decoherence

Abstract:This work is divided into two parts. The first examines recent proposals for "witnessing" quantum gravity via entanglement from the point of view of Bronstein's original objection to a quantization of gravity. Using techniques from open quantum systems we sketch how unavoidable decoherence from both inertial and gravitational backreaction between probe and detector could spoil the experimental detection of the quantization of gravity. We argue that this "failure" is actually an inherent feature of any quantum description that attempts to incorporate the equivalence principle exactly within quantum dynamics. In the second part, we speculate on how an exact realization of the equivalence principle might be implemented in an effective quantum field theory via the general covariance of correlators. While we are far from giving an explicit construction of such a theory we point out some features and consequences of such a program.

Abstract:Gauge invariance is the basis of the modern theory of electroweak and strong interactions (the so called Standard Model). The roots of gauge invariance go back to the year 1820 when electromagnetism was discovered and the first electrodynamic theory was proposed. Subsequent developments led to the discovery that different forms of the vector potential result in the same observable forces. The partial arbitrariness of the vector potential A brought forth various restrictions on it. div A = 0 was proposed by J. C. Maxwell; 4-div A = 0 was proposed L. V. Lorenz in the middle of 1860's . In most of the modern texts the latter condition is attributed to H. A. Lorentz, who half a century later was one of the key figures in the final formulation of classical electrodynamics. In 1926 a relativistic quantum-mechanical equation for charged spinless particles was formulated by E. Schrodinger, O. Klein, and V. Fock. The latter discovered that this equation is invariant with respect to multiplication of the wave function by a phase factor exp(ieX/hc) with the accompanying additions to the scalar potential of -dX/cdt and to the vector potential of grad X. In 1929 H. Weyl proclaimed this invariance as a general principle and called it Eichinvarianz in German and gauge invariance in English. The present era of non-abelian gauge theories started in 1954 with the paper by C. N. Yang and R. L. Mills.

Abstract:Gauge theories formulated in a space-time manifold that includes compact extra dimensions can show a nontrivial gauge structure. Depending on whether the gauge parameters propagate or not in the extra dimensions, two different Kaluza--Klein theories can arise when the extra dimensions are compactified. A comparison between these two possibilities, in the context of a five dimensional theory, is presented from both the theoretical and phenomenological viewpoints. The phenomenological implications of these theories are contrasted by discussing the one--loop decay of the Higgs boson into two photons. It is shown that the amplitude for this decay differs substantially from one approach to the other and that such a difference is intimately related to gauge invariance.

Abstract:Wigner's quantum-mechanical classification of particle-types in terms of irreducible representations of the Poincaré group has a classical analogue, which we extend in this paper. We study the compactness properties of the resulting phase spaces at fixed energy, and show that in order for a classical massless particle to be physically sensible, its phase space must feature a classical-particle counterpart of electromagnetic gauge invariance. By examining the connection between massless and massive particles in the massless limit, we also derive a classical-particle version of the Higgs mechanism.

Abstract:Modeling the propagation of gravitational waves (GWs) through matter is complicated by the gauge freedom of linearized gravity in that once nonlinearities are taken into consideration, gauge artifacts can cause spurious acceleration of the matter. To eliminate these artifacts, we propose how to keep the theory of dispersive GWs gauge-invariant beyond the linear approximation and, in particular, obtain an unambiguous gauge-invariant expression for the energy--momentum of a GW in dispersive medium. Using analytic tools from plasma physics, we propose an exactly gauge-invariant ``quasilinear'' theory, in which GWs are governed by linear equations and also affect the background metric on scales large compared to their wavelength. As a corollary, the gauge-invariant geometrical optics of linear dispersive GWs in a general background is formulated. As an example, we show how the well-known properties of vacuum GWs are naturally and concisely yielded by our theory in a manifestly gauge-invariant form. We also show how the gauge invariance can be maintained within a given accuracy to an arbitrary order in the GW amplitude. These results are intended to form a physically meaningful framework for studying dispersive GWs in matter.

Abstract:The principle of local gauge invariance is applied to fractional wave equations and the interaction term is determined up to order $o(\bar{g})$ in the coupling constant $\bar{g}$. As a first application, based on the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative definition, the fractional Zeeman effect is used to reproduce the baryon spectrum accurately. The transformation properties of the non relativistic fractional Schrödinger-equation under spatial rotations are investigated and an internal fractional spin is deduced.

Why gauge invariance applies to statistical mechanics

Abstract:We give an introductory account of the recently identified gauge invariance of the equilibrium statistical mechanics of classical many-body systems [J. Müller et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. (to appear) <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2406.19235" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.19235">arXiv:2406.19235</a>]. The gauge transformation is a non-commutative shifting operation on phase space that keeps the differential phase space volume element and hence the Gibbs integration measure conserved. When thermally averaged any observable is an invariant, including thermodynamic and structural quantities. Shifting transformations are canonical in the sense of classical mechanics. They also form an infinite-dimensional group with generators of infinitesimal transformations that build a non-commutative Lie algebra. We lay out the connections with the underlying geometry of coordinate displacement and with Noether's theorem. Spatial localization of the shifting yields differential operators that satisfy commutator relationships, which we describe both in purely configurational and in full phase space setups. Standard operator calculus yields corresponding equilibrium hyperforce correlation sum rules for general observables and order parameters. Using Monte Carlos simulations we demonstrate explicitly the gauge invariance for finite shifting. We argue in favour of using the gauge invariance as a statistical mechanical construction principle for obtaining exact results and for formulating smart sampling algorithms.

Very Special Linear Gravity: A Gauge-Invariant Graviton Mass

Abstract:Linearized gravity in the Very Special Relativity (VSR) framework is considered. We prove that this theory allows for a non-zero graviton mass $m_g$ without breaking gauge invariance nor modifying the relativistic dispersion relation. We find the analytic solution for the new equations of motion in our gauge choice, verifying as expected the existence of only two physical degrees of freedom. Finally, through the geodesic deviation equation, we confront some results for classic gravitational waves (GW) with the VSR ones: we see that the ratios between VSR effects and classical ones are proportional to $(m_g/E)^2$, $E$ being the energy of a graviton in the GW. For GW detectable by the interferometers LIGO and VIRGO this ratio is at most $10^{-20}$. However, for GW in the lower frequency range of future detectors, like LISA, the ratio increases significantly to $ 10^{-10}$, that combined with the anisotropic nature of VSR phenomena may lead to observable effects.

Gauge waves generation and detection in Aharonov-Bohm electrodynamics

Abstract:The extended Aharonov-Bohm electrodynamics has a simple formal structure and allows to couple the e.m. field also to currents which are not locally conserved, like those resulting from certain non-local effective quantum models of condensed matter. As it often happens in physics and mathematics when one tries to extend the validity of some equations or operations, new perspectives emerge in comparison to Maxwell theory, and some ''exotic'' phenomena are predicted. For the Aharonov-Bohm theory the main new feature is that the potentials $A^\mu$ become univocally defined and can be measured with probes in which the ''extra-current'' $I=\partial_\mu j^\mu$ is not zero at some points. As a consequence, it is possible in principle to detect pure gauge-waves with $\mathbf{E}=\mathbf{B}=0$, which would be regarded as non-physical in the Maxwell gauge-invariant theory with local current conservation. We discuss in detail the theoretical aspects of this phenomenon and propose an experimental realization of the detectors. A full treatment of wave propagation in anomalous media with extra-currents and of energy-momentum balance issues is also given.

Gauge Dependence of Gravitational Waves Induced by Primordial Isocurvature Fluctuations

Abstract:Primordial isocurvature perturbations, which can arise from various sources in the early Universe, have the potential to leave observable imprints on the gravitational-wave background and provide insights into the nature of primordial fluctuations. In this study, we investigate the gauge dependence of induced gravitational waves (IGWs) sourced by these isocurvature perturbations. We analyze the energy density spectra of IGWs in three different gauges: synchronous, Newtonian, and uniform curvature gauges. To facilitate this analysis, we derive analytical solutions for the perturbations that contribute to the IGW spectra. Our results reveal significant differences in the energy spectra across these gauges. We find that the energy density of IGWs increases with conformal time as $\eta^8$ and $\eta^4$ for synchronous and uniform curvature gauges, respectively, while it converges in the Newtonian gauge. These findings highlight the importance of gauge choice in calculating IGWs and have implications for the interpretation of future observations of the gravitational-wave background.

Abstract:We investigate certain invariance properties of quantum fluids subject to a nonlinear gauge potential. In particular, we derive the covariant transformation laws for the nonlinear potentials under a space-time Galilean boost and consider U(1) gauge transformations. We find that the hydrodynamic canonical field equations are form-invariant in the case of external gauge functions, but not for nonlinear gauge functionals. Hence, nonlinear gauge potentials are non-trivial potentials which may not be "gauged-away". Notably, for a 1D superfluid, attempting to do so generates the gauge-pressure of the fluid in the Hamiltonian density. Further, we investigate how the field equations transform under arbitrary Galilean transformations. We find that the immediate lack of Galilean covariance is restored under a suitably chosen transformation rule set for the potentials, which is identical in form to that of a Schrödinger particle coupled to external scalar and vector potentials.

Abstract:Even though its classical equations of motion are then left invariant, when an action is redefined by an additive total derivative or divergence term (in time, in the case of a mechanical system) such a transformation induces nontrivial consequences for the system's canonical phase space formulation. This is even more true and then in more subtle ways for the canonically quantised dynamics, with in particular an induced transformation in the unitary configuration space representation of the Heisenberg algebra being used for the quantum system. When coupled to a background gauge field, such considerations become crucial for a proper understanding of the consequences for the system's quantum dynamics of gauge transformations of that classical external background gauge field, while under such transformations the system's degrees of freedom, abstract quantum states and quantum dynamics are certainly strictly invariant. After a detailed analysis of these different points in a general context, these are then illustrated specifically in the case of the quantum Landau problem with its classical external background magnetic vector potential for which the most general possible parametrised gauge choice is implemented herein. The latter discussion aims as well to clarify some perplexing statements in the literature regarding the status of gauge choices to be made for the magnetic vector potential for that quantum system. The role of the global space-time symmetries of the Landau problem and their gauge invariant Noether charges is then also emphasized.
