Abstract:Modeling the propagation of gravitational waves (GWs) through matter is complicated by the gauge freedom of linearized gravity in that once nonlinearities are taken into consideration, gauge artifacts can cause spurious acceleration of the matter. To eliminate these artifacts, we propose how to keep the theory of dispersive GWs gauge-invariant beyond the linear approximation and, in particular, obtain an unambiguous gauge-invariant expression for the energy--momentum of a GW in dispersive medium. Using analytic tools from plasma physics, we propose an exactly gauge-invariant ``quasilinear'' theory, in which GWs are governed by linear equations and also affect the background metric on scales large compared to their wavelength. As a corollary, the gauge-invariant geometrical optics of linear dispersive GWs in a general background is formulated. As an example, we show how the well-known properties of vacuum GWs are naturally and concisely yielded by our theory in a manifestly gauge-invariant form. We also show how the gauge invariance can be maintained within a given accuracy to an arbitrary order in the GW amplitude. These results are intended to form a physically meaningful framework for studying dispersive GWs in matter.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the modeling of gravitational waves (GWs) propagating in a medium, especially how to eliminate the pseudo - acceleration problem caused by gauge freedom when considering non - linear effects. Specifically, the paper proposes a method to keep the dispersive propagation of gravitational waves gauge - invariant in the framework of non - linear theory, and in particular, obtains an explicit gauge - invariant expression to describe the energy - momentum of gravitational waves in a dispersive medium. ### Core problems of the paper 1. **Gauge invariance problem**: When considering non - linear effects, the gauge freedom in linearized gravitational theory may lead to the pseudo - acceleration of matter, which is physically unreasonable. The goal of the paper is to eliminate these gauge artifacts and ensure the physical significance of theoretical results. 2. **Energy - momentum expression**: The paper proposes a gauge - invariant method to define the energy - momentum of gravitational waves in a dispersive medium, which is the key to understanding the interaction between gravitational waves and the medium. 3. **Theoretical framework of dispersive gravitational waves**: The paper constructs a physically meaningful framework for studying dispersive gravitational waves in a medium, especially in the early universe and near compact celestial bodies. ### Solutions - **Quasilinear theory**: The paper proposes a quasilinear (QL) theory, in which gravitational waves are controlled by linear equations while affecting the background metric. This theory can describe the energy - momentum exchange between gravitational waves and the medium. - **Geometrical optics approximation**: Using the geometrical optics (GO) approximation, the paper derives the propagation equation of linear dispersive gravitational waves and shows how to maintain gauge invariance at any precision. - **Gauge - invariant projection**: By introducing a gauge - invariant projection operator, the paper rewrites the action of linear gravitational waves, thereby eliminating the influence of gauge freedom. ### Specific steps 1. **Define the background metric and the perturbed metric**: Decompose the metric into the background metric \( g_{\alpha\beta} \) and the perturbed metric \( h_{\alpha\beta} \), and assume that the scale of \( h_{\alpha\beta} \) is much smaller than the curvature radius of the background metric. 2. **Introduce the gauge - invariant projection operator**: Use the projection operator \( \hat{\Pi}_{\alpha\beta}^{\gamma\delta} \) to decompose the perturbed metric into a gauge - invariant part and a gauge part. 3. **Construct a gauge - invariant action**: Rewrite the action of gravitational waves through the projection operator so that it remains invariant under gauge transformation. 4. **Derive the field equation**: Starting from the gauge - invariant action, derive the field equation of gravitational waves and discuss its geometrical optics approximation form. ### Application examples - **Vacuum gravitational waves**: The paper shows how to naturally derive the known properties of vacuum gravitational waves in a gauge - invariant form. - **Dispersive gravitational waves in a medium**: The paper provides a framework for studying dispersive gravitational waves in a medium, especially gravitational waves in the early universe and near compact celestial bodies. ### Conclusion The paper successfully constructs a gauge - invariant quasilinear theoretical framework for studying dispersive gravitational waves in a medium. This framework not only solves the problems brought by gauge freedom but also provides a solid theoretical basis for future specific research.
