Topological Drawings meet Classical Theorems from Convex Geometry

Abstract:In this article we discuss classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of topological drawings and beyond. In a simple topological drawing of the complete graph $K_n$, any two edges share at most one point: either a common vertex or a point where they cross. Triangles of simple topological drawings can be viewed as convex sets. This gives a link to convex geometry. As our main result, we present a generalization of Kirchberger's Theorem that is of purely combinatorial nature. It turned out that this classical theorem also applies to "generalized signotopes" - a combinatorial generalization of simple topological drawings, which we introduce and investigate in the course of this article. As indicated by the name they are a generalization of signotopes, a structure studied in the context of encodings for arrangements of pseudolines. We also present a family of simple topological drawings with arbitrarily large Helly number, and a new proof of a topological generalization of Carathéodory's Theorem in the plane and discuss further classical theorems from Convex Geometry in the context of simple topological drawings.

DELTACON: A Principled Massive-Graph Similarity Function

Abstract:How much did a network change since yesterday? How different is the wiring between Bob's brain (a left-handed male) and Alice's brain (a right-handed female)? Graph similarity with known node correspondence, i.e. the detection of changes in the connectivity of graphs, arises in numerous settings. In this work, we formally state the axioms and desired properties of the graph similarity functions, and evaluate when state-of-the-art methods fail to detect crucial connectivity changes in graphs. We propose DeltaCon, a principled, intuitive, and scalable algorithm that assesses the similarity between two graphs on the same nodes (e.g. employees of a company, customers of a mobile carrier). Experiments on various synthetic and real graphs showcase the advantages of our method over existing similarity measures. Finally, we employ DeltaCon to real applications: (a) we classify people to groups of high and low creativity based on their brain connectivity graphs, and (b) do temporal anomaly detection in the who-emails-whom Enron graph.

Abstract:Abstract We establish a connection between the algebraic geometry of the type permutohedral toric variety and the combinatorics of delta‐matroids. Using this connection, we compute the volume and lattice point counts of type generalized permutohedra. Applying tropical Hodge theory to a new framework of “tautological classes of delta‐matroids,” modeled after certain vector bundles associated to realizable delta‐matroids, we establish the log‐concavity of a Tutte‐like invariant for a broad family of delta‐matroids that includes all realizable delta‐matroids. Our results include new log‐concavity statements for all (ordinary) matroids as special cases.

Convex drawings of the complete graph: topology meets geometry

Abstract:In this work, we introduce and develop a theory of convex drawings of the complete graph $K_n$ in the sphere. A drawing $D$ of $K_n$ is convex if, for every 3-cycle $T$ of $K_n$, there is a closed disc $\Delta_T$ bounded by $D[T]$ such that, for any two vertices $u,v$ with $D[u]$ and $D[v]$ both in $\Delta_T$, the entire edge $D[uv]$ is also contained in $\Delta_T$. As one application of this perspective, we consider drawings containing a non-convex $K_5$ that has restrictions on its extensions to drawings of $K_7$. For each such drawing, we use convexity to produce a new drawing with fewer crossings. This is the first example of local considerations providing sufficient conditions for suboptimality. In particular, we do not compare the number of crossings {with the number of crossings in} any known drawings. This result sheds light on Aichholzer's computer proof (personal communication) showing that, for $n\le 12$, every optimal drawing of $K_n$ is convex. Convex drawings are characterized by excluding two of the five drawings of $K_5$. Two refinements of convex drawings are h-convex and f-convex drawings. The latter have been shown by Aichholzer et al (Deciding monotonicity of good drawings of the complete graph, Proc.~XVI Spanish Meeting on Computational Geometry (EGC 2015), 2015) and, independently, the authors of the current article (Levi's Lemma, pseudolinear drawings of $K_n$, and empty triangles, \rbr{J. Graph Theory DOI: <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1002/jgt.22167" href="https://doi.org/10.1002/jgt.22167" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1002/jgt.22167</a>)}, to be equivalent to pseudolinear drawings. Also, h-convex drawings are equivalent to pseudospherical drawings as demonstrated recently by Arroyo et al (Extending drawings of complete graphs into arrangements of pseudocircles, submitted).

Distributed Delta-Coloring under Bandwidth Limitations

Abstract:We consider the problem of coloring graphs of maximum degree $\Delta$ with $\Delta$ colors in the distributed setting with limited bandwidth. Specifically, we give a $\mathsf{poly}\log\log n$-round randomized algorithm in the CONGEST model. This is close to the lower bound of $\Omega(\log \log n)$ rounds from [Brandt et al., STOC '16], which holds also in the more powerful LOCAL model. The core of our algorithm is a reduction to several special instances of the constructive Lovász local lemma (LLL) and the $deg+1$-list coloring problem.

Abstract:A straight-line drawing of a graph is a monotone drawing if for each pair of vertices there is a path which is monotonically increasing in some direction, and it is called a strongly monotone drawing if the direction of monotonicity is given by the direction of the line segment connecting the two vertices. We present algorithms to compute crossing-free strongly monotone drawings for some classes of planar graphs; namely, 3-connected planar graphs, outerplanar graphs, and 2-trees. The drawings of 3-connected planar graphs are based on primal-dual circle packings. Our drawings of outerplanar graphs are based on a new algorithm that constructs strongly monotone drawings of trees which are also convex. For irreducible trees, these drawings are strictly convex.

Abstract:We consider the flip-width of geometric graphs, a notion of graph width recently introduced by Toruńczyk. We prove that many different types of geometric graphs have unbounded flip-width. These include interval graphs, permutation graphs, circle graphs, intersection graphs of axis-aligned line segments or axis-aligned unit squares, unit distance graphs, unit disk graphs, visibility graphs of simple polygons, $\beta$-skeletons, 4-polytopes, rectangle of influence graphs, and 3d Delaunay triangulations.

A census of graph-drawing algorithms based on generalized transversal structures

Abstract:We present two graph drawing algorithms based on the recently defined "grand-Schnyder woods", which are a far-reaching generalization of the classical Schnyder woods. The first is a straight-line drawing algorithm for plane graphs with faces of degree 3 and 4 with no separating 3-cycle, while the second is a rectangular drawing algorithm for the dual of such plane graphs. In our algorithms, the coordinates of the vertices are defined in a global manner, based on the underlying grand-Schnyder woods. The grand-Schnyder woods and drawings are computed in linear time. When specializing our algorithms to special classes of plane graphs, we recover the following known algorithms: (1) He's algorithm for rectangular drawing of 3-valent plane graphs, based on transversal structures, (2) Fusy's algorithm for the straight-line drawing of triangulations of the square, based on transversal structures, (3) Bernardi and Fusy's algorithm for the orthogonal drawing of 4-valent plane graphs, based on 2-orientations, (4) Barriere and Huemer's algorithm for the straight-line drawing of quadrangulations, based on separating decompositions. Our contributions therefore provide a unifying perspective on a large family of graph drawing algorithms that were originally defined on different classes of plane graphs and were based on seemingly different combinatorial structures.

Abstract:In phylogenetic analysis. one searches for phylogenetic trees that reflect observed similarity between a collection of species in question. To this end. one often invokes two simple facts: (i) Any tree is completely determined by the metric it induces on its leaves (which represent the species). (ii) The resulting metrics are characterized by their property of being additive or in the case of dated rooted trees, ultra-additive. Consequently, searching for additive or ultra-additive metrics A that best approximate the metric D encoding the observed similarities is a standard task in phylogenetic analysis. Remarkably, while there are efficient algorithms for constructing optimal ultra-additive approximations, the problem of finding optimal additive approximations in the l(I) or l(infinity) sense is NP-hard. In the context of the theory of delta-hyperbolic groups, however, good additive approximations A of a metric D were found by Gromov already in 1988 and shown to satisfy the boundparallel toD - Aparallel toinfinity less than or equal to Delta(D)[log(2)(#X - 1)].where Delta(D), the hyperbolicity of D, i.e. the maximum of all expressions of the formD (u, v) + D (x, y) - max (D(u, x) + D (v, y), D(u, y) + D (v, x))(u, v, x, y is an element of X). Yet, besides some notable exceptions (e.g. Adv. Appl. Math. 27 (2001) 733-767) the potential of Gromov's concept of hyperbolicity is far from being fully explored within the context of phylogenetic analysis. In this paper, we provide the basis for a systematic theory of A ultra-additive and A additive approximations. In addition. we also explore, the average and worst case behavior of Gromov's bound. Abstract:Graph drawing beyond planarity is a research area that has received an increasing attention in the last twenty years, driven by the necessity to mitigate the visual complexity inherent in geometric representations of non-planar graphs. This research area stems from the study of graph layouts with forbidden crossing configurations, a well-established subject in geometric and topological graph theory. In this context, the contribution of this paper is as follows: 1) We introduce a new hierarchy of graph families, called -real face graphs; for any integer , a graph G is a -real face graph if it admits a drawing in the plane such that the boundary of each face (formed by vertices, crossings, and edges) contains at least k vertices of G (" " stands for k or more); 2) We give tight upper bounds on the edge density of -real face graphs, namely we prove that n-vertex -real face and -real face graphs have at most and edges, respectively. Furthermore, in a constrained scenario in which all vertices must lie on the boundary of the external face, -real face and -real face graphs have at most and edges, respectively; 3) We characterize the complete graphs that admit a -real face drawing or an outer -real face drawing for any . We also provide a clear picture for the majority of complete bipartite graphs; and 4) We establish relationships between -real face graphs and other prominent beyond-planar graph families; notably, we show that for any , the class of -real face graphs is not included in any family of beyond-planar graphs with hereditary property.

Tree Drawings with Columns

Abstract:Our goal is to visualize an additional data dimension of a tree with multifaceted data through superimposition on vertical strips, which we call columns. Specifically, we extend upward drawings of unordered rooted trees where vertices have assigned heights by mapping each vertex to a column. Under an orthogonal drawing style and with every subtree within a column drawn planar, we consider different natural variants concerning the arrangement of subtrees within a column. We show that minimizing the number of crossings in such a drawing can be achieved in fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) time in the maximum vertex degree $\Delta$ for the most restrictive variant, while becoming NP-hard (even to approximate) already for a slightly relaxed variant. However, we provide an FPT algorithm in the number of crossings plus $\Delta$, and an FPT-approximation algorithm in $\Delta$ via a reduction to feedback arc set.

Abstract:Rooted trees abound in computing and it is often necessary to draw them for visualization and documentation purposes. In the classical convention for tree drawing, the tree is drawn in a "level" fashion, with nodes (represented by boxes) at depth k lying on a horizontal line at a distance of k units below the root. The parent - child relationships are represented by lines between the boxes. Several algorithms have been developed for constructing a compact layout of a tree in the classical convention.In this paper we investigate algorithms for drawing trees according to two new conventions. In the inclusion convention, nodes are represented by boxes, and the parent - child relationship is represented by inclusion of one box in another. The tip-over convention again represents nodes as boxes, and, like the classical convention, represents the parent - child relationship by lines between the boxes; however, we allow siblings to be arranged vertically rather than horizontally.For many of the cases which arise in visualization of trees (for example, binary trees with textual information at the leaves) we present polynomial time algorithms. However, the general problem of finding minimum size layouts for either of the new conventions is shown to be NP-hard.

Abstract:Strict outerconfluent drawing is a style of graph drawing in which vertices are drawn on the boundary of a disk, adjacencies are indicated by the existence of smooth curves through a system of tracks within the disk, and no two adjacent vertices are connected by more than one of these smooth tracks. We investigate graph width parameters on the graphs that have drawings in this style. We prove that the clique-width of these graphs is unbounded, but their twin-width is bounded.

Abstract:Distance-hereditary graphs are in important graph class in graph theory, as they are well-placed in the graph class hierarchy and permit many algorithmic results. We investigate structural and algorithmic advantages of a directed version of this well-researched graph class. Since the previously defined distance-hereditary digraphs do not permit a recursive structure, we define directed twin-distance-hereditary graphs, which can be constructed by several twin and pendant vertex operations analogously to undirected distance-hereditary graphs and which still preserves the distance hereditary property. We give a characterization by forbidden induced subdigraphs and place the class in a hierarchy comparing it to related classes. We further show algorithmic advantages concerning directed width parameters, directed graph coloring and some other well-known digraph problems which are NP-hard in general, but computable in polynomial or even linear time on twin-distance-hereditary digraphs. This includes computability of directed path-width and tree-width in linear time and the directed chromatic number in polynomial time. From our result that directed twin-distance-hereditary graphs have directed clique-width at most 3 it follows by Courcelle's theorem on directed clique-width that we can compute every graph problem describable in monadic second-order logic on quantification over vertices and vertex sets as well as some further problems like Hamiltonian Path/Cycle in polynomial time.

Triangulations of Flow Polytopes, Ample Framings, and Gentle Algebras

Abstract:The cone of nonnegative flows for a directed acyclic graph (DAG) is known to admit regular unimodular triangulations induced by framings of the DAG. These triangulations restrict to triangulations of the flow polytope for strength one flows, which are called DKK triangulations. For a special class of framings called ample framings, these triangulations of the flow cone project to a complete fan. We characterize the DAGs that admit ample framings, and we enumerate the number of ample framings for a fixed DAG. We establish a connection between maximal simplices in DKK triangulations and $\tau$-tilting posets for certain gentle algebras, which allows us to impose a poset structure on the dual graph of any DKK triangulation for an amply framed DAG. Using this connection, we are able to prove that for full DAGs, i.e., those DAGs with inner vertices having in-degree and out-degree equal to two, the flow polytopes are Gorenstein and have unimodal Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomials.

Abstract:We introduce L-drawings, a novel paradigm for representing directed graphs aiming at combining the readability features of orthogonal drawings with the expressive power of matrix representations. In an L-drawing, vertices have exclusive $x$- and $y$-coordinates and edges consist of two segments, one exiting the source vertically and one entering the destination horizontally. We study the problem of computing L-drawings using minimum ink. We prove its NP-completeness and provide a heuristics based on a polynomial-time algorithm that adds a vertex to a drawing using the minimum additional ink. We performed an experimental analysis of the heuristics which confirms its effectiveness.

Abstract:We introduce a new dynamic data structure for maintaining the strongly connected components (SCCs) of a directed graph (digraph) under edge deletions, so as to answer a rich repertoire of connectivity queries. Our main technical contribution is a decremental data structure that supports sensitivity queries of the form "are $ u $ and $ v $ strongly connected in the graph $ G \setminus w $?", for any triple of vertices $ u, v, w $, while $ G $ undergoes deletions of edges. Our data structure processes a sequence of edge deletions in a digraph with $n$ vertices in $O(m n \log{n})$ total time and $O(n^2 \log{n})$ space, where $m$ is the number of edges before any deletion, and answers the above queries in constant time. We can leverage our data structure to obtain decremental data structures for many more types of queries within the same time and space complexity. For instance for edge-related queries, such as testing whether two query vertices $u$ and $v$ are strongly connected in $G \setminus e$, for some query edge $e$. As another important application of our decremental data structure, we provide the first nontrivial algorithm for maintaining the dominator tree of a flow graph under edge deletions. We present an algorithm that processes a sequence of edge deletions in a flow graph in $O(m n \log{n})$ total time and $O(n^2 \log{n})$ space. For reducible flow graphs we provide an $O(mn)$-time and $O(m + n)$-space algorithm. We give a conditional lower bound that provides evidence that these running times may be tight up to subpolynomial factors.
