Abstract:We demonstrate that the recently proposed soft gluon factorization (SGF) is equivalent to the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization for heavy quarkonium production or decay, which means that, for any given process, these two factorization theories are either both valid or both violated. We use two methods to arrive at this conclusion. In the first method, we apply the two factorization theories to the physical process J/psi -> e(+)e(-). Our explicit calculation shows that both SGF and NRQCD can correctly reproduce the low energy physics of full QCD, and the two factorizations are thus equivalent. In the second method, by using equations of motion, we successfully deduce SGF from NRQCD effective field theory. By identifying SGF with NRQCD factorization, we establish relations between the two factorization theories and prove the generalized Gremm-Kapustin relation as a byproduct. Compared with the NRQCD factorization, the advantage of SGF is that it resums the series of relativistic corrections originating from kinematic effects to all powers, yielding better convergence of the relativistic expansion.

Abstract:Despite the importance of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) as a fundamental mechanism for angular momentum transport in magnetized accretion disks, it has yet to be demonstrated in the laboratory. A liquid sodium alpha-omega dynamo experiment at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology provides an ideal environment to study the MRI in a rotating metal annulus (Couette flow). A local stability analysis is performed as a function of shear, magnetic field strength, magnetic Reynolds number, and turbulent Prandtl number. The later takes into account the minimum turbulence induced by the formation of an Ekman layer against the rigidly rotating end walls of a cylindrical vessel. Stability conditions are presented and unstable conditions for the sodium experiment are compared with another proposed MRI experiment with liquid gallium. Due to the relatively large magnetic Reynolds number achievable in the sodium experiment, it should be possible to observe the excitation of the MRI for a wide range of wavenumbers and further to observe the transition to the turbulent state.

Abstract:We study the low-temperature behavior of a magnetic impurity which is weakly coupled to correlated conduction electrons. To account for conduction electron interactions a diagrammatic approach in the frame of the 1/N expansion is developed. The method allows us to study various consequences of the conduction electron correlations for the ground state and the low-energy excitations. We analyse the characteristic energy scale in the limit of weak conduction electron interactions. Results are reported for static properties (impurity valence, charge susceptibility, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat) in the low-temperature limit.

Abstract:We study the production of heavy quarkonium states in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. Following earlier work of Blaizot, Fujii, Gelis, and Venugopalan, we systematically include both small x evolution and multiple scattering effects on heavy quark pair production within the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework. We obtain for the first time expressions in the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism for heavy quarkonium differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity. We observe that the production of color singlet heavy quark pairs is sensitive to both “quadrupole” and “dipole” Wilson line correlators, whose energy evolution is described by the Balitsky-JIMWLK equations. In contrast, the color octet channel is sensitive to dipole correlators alone. In a quasi-classical approximation, our results for the color singlet channel reduce to those of Dominguez et al. [1]. We compare our results to those obtained combining the CGC with the color evaporation model and point to qualitative differences in the two approaches.

Abstract:Recent progress in heavy quarkonium production is reviewed in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD.Possible resolutions of the long standing problems of J/ψ and ψ ′ production cross sec- tions and polarizations at high p T observed at the Tevatron are investigated, and predictions are compared with the new measurements at the LHC.Puzzles in hadroproduction of P-wave charmonium states χ cJ are also discussed.In addition, charmonium production in e + e -annihilation at B factories and in photoproduction at HERA as well as in two-photon collisions are also reviewed.Special emphasis is put on the role of next-to-leading order corrections in NRQCD, which may essentially change the p T distributions at high p T for both yield and polarization in quarkonium hadroproduction.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the color changes of gravitational microlensing events caused by the two different mechanisms of differential amplification for a limb-darkened extended source and blending. From this investigation, we find that the color changes of limb-darkened extended source events (color curves) have dramatically different characteristics depending on whether the lens transits the source star or not. We show that for a source transit event, the lens proper motion can be determined by simply measuring the turning time of the color curve instead of fitting the overall color or light curves. We also find that even for a very small fraction of blended light, the color changes induced by the blending effect is equivalent to those caused by the limb-darkening effect, causing serious distortion in the observed color curve. Therefore, to obtain useful information about the lens and source star from the color curve of a limb-darkened extended source event, it will be essential to eliminate or correct for the blending effect. We discuss about the methods for the efficient correction of the blending effect.

Abstract:We address quarkonium formation at moderate to large transverse momenta, where the single-parton collinear fragmentation prevails over the short-distance emission, directly from the hard sub-scattering, of the constituent heavy-quark pair. We rely on Non-Relativistic-QCD (NRQCD) Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculations for all parton fragmentation channels to quarkonia, taken as proxies for initial-scale inputs. Preliminary sets of Variable-Flavor Number-Scheme (VFNS) fragmentation functions (FFs) are built via a DGLAP scheme that properly accounts for evolution thresholds. Statistical errors are assessed via a Monte Carlo (MC), replica-like approach aimed at catching Missing Higher-Order Uncertainties (MHOUs).

Abstract:I introduce and explore a range of topics of contemporary interest in hadronic physics: from what drives the formation of a nonzero quark condensate to the effect that mechanism has on light and heavy meson form factors, and the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. The trail leads naturally through a discussion of confinement, dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and bound state structure: phenomena that require nonperturbative methods for their explanation. In all of this, the necessary momentum-dependent modification of the quark and gluon propagators plays a significant role.
Quarkonium fragmentation in a variable-flavor number scheme: Towards NRFF1.0

Abstract:We report progress on the determination and study of quarkonium production within the fragmentation approximation. Our analyses address the moderate and large transverse-momentum regime, where the collinear fragmentation of a single parton is expected to dominate over the short-distance production, directly from the hard scattering, of the constituent $(Q \bar{Q})$ system. Parton fragmentation channels to pseudoscalar and vector quarkonia are built on the basis of non-Relativistic QCD next-to-leading computations, which we use to model initial-scale fragmentation inputs. Thus, a preliminary family of Variable-Flavor Number-Scheme (VFNS) fragmentation functions, named NRFF1.0, are constructed through standard DGLAP evolution. Statistical uncertainties are obtained from a Monte Carlo, replica-like approach embodying missing higher-order uncertainties.

Abstract:The perturbative instability of NLO collinear factorisation (CF) computations of $p_T$-integrated cross sections of heavy quarkonium production at high hadronic or photon-hadron collision energy is discussed. We resolve this problem via the matching of NLO CF computation with the resummation of higher-order corrections $\propto \alpha_s^n \ln^{n-1}(\hat{s}/M^2)$ at high partonic center of mass energies $\hat{s}\gg M^2$. The resummation is performed in the Doubly-Logarithmic Approximation(DLA) of High-Energy Factorisation(HEF) formalism. We also report the results of the first computation of one-loop corrections to impact-factors involving heavy quark-antiquark pair in the intermediate states considered in the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorisation formalism for quarkonium production: $Q\bar{Q}\left[{}^1S_0^{[8]} \right]$ and $Q\bar{Q}\left[{}^1S_0^{[1]} \right]$. These results are necessary for the extension of our resummation formalism beyond DLA.

Radiative Leptonic Decay of Heavy Quarkonia

Abstract:This study examines the properties of heavy quarkonia $X$ by treating them as bound states of $Q$ and $\bar{Q}$ at the LO level within the NRQCD framework, where $Q$ represents either a charm or a bottom quark. The branching ratios for the radiative leptonic decays $X\rightarrow \gamma l^{+} l^{-}$ are revisited and the angular and energy/momentum distributions of the final state particles are analyzed in the rest frame of $X$. Furthermore, we apply Lorentz transformations from the rest frame of $X$ to the center-of-mass frame of $l^+ l^-$ to establish the connection between the widths ${\Gamma_{X \rightarrow \gamma l^{+} l^{-}}}$ and ${\Gamma_{X \rightarrow l^{+} l^{-}}}$. When comparing the connection with those documented in the literature (divided by $2\pi$) for various $X$ states, such as $J/\Psi$, $\Psi(2S)$, $\Upsilon(1S)$, and $\Upsilon(2S)$, relative differences typically around or below 10\% can be found, which is comparable to the NLO corrections of $O(\alpha)$ and $O(v^4)$. However, we observe a significant disparity in the ratio between ${\Gamma_{\Psi(2S) \to \gamma \tau^+ \tau^-}}$ and ${\Gamma_{\Psi(2S) \to \tau^+ \tau^-}}$, with our prediction being four times larger than those in the literature. The outcomes derived from this study held practical implications in describing the QED radiative processes and contribute to the investigation of QCD processes associated with the decays of heavy quarkonia and the searches for new physics.

Abstract:Within the framework of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism, we compute QCD next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to the helicity amplitudes as well as the decay width of Z→H+γ , where H can be ηQ(Q=c,b),J/ψ , or Υ . In addition, we resum the next-to-leading logarithms (NLL) of mZ2/mQ2 to all orders of αs for the leading-twist helicity amplitude by employing the light-cone factorization approach. It is worth mentioning that we obtain the analytic expressions of the truncated NLL at αs2 . We find that the O(αs) corrections are around 10% for ηc and Υ productions, however insignificant for J/ψ and ηb productions. The O(αs2) corrections are moderate for charmonium production, while very small for bottomonium production. Moreover, it is found that the NLL resummation can considerably alter the NRQCD prediction, especially for J/ψ production. Combining the NRQCD and light-cone computation, we make phenomenological predictions on the decay widths and branching fractions. Abstract:We discuss some processes for studying heavy quarkonium production and polarization mechanisms, including photoproduction of ηc and J/ψ polarization in DIS at HERA. The J/ψ hadroproduction at Tevatron in the kt factorization approach is also studied. We find that these processes can provide important tests for heavy quarkonium production, and the color-octet mechansim.
