Abstract:The spectrum of the d-bar-Neumann Laplacian on a polydisc in several complex variables is explicitly computed. The calculation exhibits that the spectrum consists of eigenvalues, some of which, in particular the smallest ones, are of infinite multiplicity.

Abstract:The structure of the spectrum of the three-dimensional Dirichlet Laplacian in a 3D polyhedral layer of fixed width is studied. It turns out that the essential spectrum is determined by the smallest dihedral angle that forms the boundary of the layer while the discrete spectrum is always finite. An example of a layer with empty discrete spectrum is constructed. The spectrum is proved to be nonempty in regular polyhedral layer.

Abstract:We show that the spectrum of the complex Laplacian on a product of hermitian manifolds is the Minkowski sum of the spectra of the complex Laplacians on the factors. We use this fact to show that the range of the d-bar operator on a product manifold is closed, provided it is closed in each factor.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the structure of the Fučík spectrum ΠpD/N(a,b) of Dirichlet and Neumann problems for the scalar p-Laplacian with indefinite weights a,b∈L1[0,1]. Besides the trivial horizontal lines and vertical lines, it will be shown that, confined to each quadrant of R2, ΠpD/N(a,b) is made up of zero, an odd number of, or a double sequence of hyperbolic like curves. These hyperbolic like curves are continuous and strictly monotonic, and they have horizontal and vertical asymptotic lines. The number of the hyperbolic like curves is determined by the Dirichlet and Neumann half-eigenvalues of the p-Laplacian with weights a and b. The asymptotic lines will be estimated by using Sturm-Liouville eigenvalues of the p-Laplacian with a weight a or b.

Abstract:Let $(X,d)$ be a locally compact separable ultrametric space. We assume that $(X,d)$ is proper, that is, any closed ball $B$ in $X$ is a compact set. Given a measure $m$ on $X$ and a function $C(B)$ defined on the set of balls (the choice function), we define the hierarchical Laplacian $L_C$ which is closely related to the concept of the hierarchical lattice of F.J. Dyson. $L_C$ is a non-negative definite, self-adjoint operator in $L^2(X,m)$. We address in this paper to the following question: How general can be the spectrum $\mathsf{Spec}(L_C)$ as a subset of the non-negative reals? When $(X,d)$ is compact, $\mathsf{Spec}(L_C)$ is an increasing sequence of eigenvalues of finite multiplicity which contains $0$. Assuming that $(X,d)$ is not compact we show that, under some natural conditions concerning the structure of the hierarchical lattice (= the tree of $d$-balls), any given closed subset $S$ of $[0,\infty)$, which contains $0$ as an accumulation point and is unbounded if $X$ is non-discrete, may appear as $\mathsf{Spec}(L_C)$ for some appropriately chosen function $C(B)$. The operator $-L_C$ extends to $L^q(X,m)$, $0 < q < \infty$, as Markov generator and its spectrum does not depend on $q$. As an example, we consider the operator $\mathfrak{D}^{\alpha}$ of fractional derivative defined on the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers.

Abstract:For a Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle over a Hermitian manifold, we consider the Dolbeault Laplacian with $\overline\partial$-Neumann boundary conditions, which is a self-adjoint operator on the space of square-integrable differential forms with values in the given holomorphic bundle. We argue that some known results on the spectral properties of this operator on pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb C^n$ continue to hold on K\"ahler manifolds satisfying certain bounded geometry assumptions. In particular, we will consider the Dolbeault complex for forms with values in a line bundle, where known results from magnetic Schr\"odinger operator theory can be applied.
Spectrum of the Laplacian on the Fricke-Macbeath surface

Abstract:The Fricke-Macbeath surface is the unique Hurwitz surface of genus 7 with 504 conformal automorphisms. In this paper, we prove that the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the Fricke-Macbeath surface has a sevenfold multiplicity and contained in the interval $[1.23, 1.26]$. Further, we numerically identify the 7-dimensional representation of its automorphism group corresponding to the eigenspace associated to the first eigenvalue. We also determine the Dirichlet domain centered at 0 for a Fuchsian group that uniformizes the Fricke-Macbeath surface, identifying the algebraic coordinates for its vertices.

Abstract:Parallel to the signless Laplacian spectral theory, we introduce and develop the nonlinear spectral theory of signless 1-Laplacian on graphs. Again, the first eigenvalue μ^+_1 of the signless 1-Laplacian precisely characterizes the bipartiteness of a graph and naturally connects to the maxcut problem. However, the dual Cheeger constant h^+, which has only some upper and lower bounds in the Laplacian spectral theory, is proved to be 1-μ^+_1. The structure of the eigenvectors and the graphic feature of eigenvalues are also studied. The Courant nodal domain theorem for graphs is extended to the signless 1-Laplacian. A set-pair version of the Lovász extension, which aims at the equivalence between discrete combination optimization and continuous function optimization, is established to recover the relationship h^+=1-μ^+_1. A local analysis of the associated functional yields an inverse power method to determine h^+ and then produces an efficient implementation of the recursive spectral cut algorithm for the maxcut problem.

Abstract:The eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian of a graph provide information on its topological and structural characteristics and also on some relevant dynamical aspects, specifically in relation to random walks. In this paper we determine the spectra of the normalized Laplacian of iterated triangulations of a generic simple connected graph. As an application, we also find closed-forms for their multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny’s constant and number of spanning trees.

Abstract:We investigate the spectrum of a Laplace operator with mixed boundary conditions in an unbounded chamfered quarter of layer. This problem arises in the study of the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in thick polyhedral domains having some symmetries such as the so-called Fichera layer. The geometry we consider depends on two parameters gathered in some vector $\kappa=(\kappa_1,\kappa_2)$ which characterizes the domain at the edges. By exchanging the axes and/or modifying their orientations if necessary, it is sufficient to restrict the analysis to the cases $\kappa_1\ge0$ and $\kappa_2\in[-\kappa_1,\kappa_1]$. We identify the essential spectrum and establish different results concerning the discrete spectrum with respect to $\kappa$. In particular, we show that for a given $\kappa_1>0$, there is some $h(\kappa_1)>0$ such that discrete spectrum exists for $\kappa_2\in[-\kappa_1,0)\cup(h(\kappa_1),\kappa_1]$ whereas it is empty for $\kappa_2\in[0,h(\kappa_1)]$. The proofs rely on classical arguments of spectral theory such as the max-min principle. The main originality lies rather in the delicate use of the features of the geometry.

Abstract:We study the p-independence of spectra of Laplace operators on graphs arising from regular Dirichlet forms on discrete spaces. Here, a sufficient criterion is given solely by a uniform subexponential growth condition. Moreover, under a mild assumption on the measure we show a one-sided spectral inclusion without any further assumptions. We study applications to normalized Laplacians including symmetries of the spectrum and a characterization for positivity of the Cheeger constant. Furthermore, we consider Laplacians on planar tessellations for which we relate the spectral p-independence to assumptions on the curvature.

Abstract:We study the interplay between spectrum, geometry and boundary conditions for two distinguished self-adjoint realisations of the Laplacian on infinite metric graphs, the so-called Friedrichs and Neumann extensions. We introduce a new criterion for compactness of the resolvent and apply this to identify a transition from purely discrete to non-empty essential spectrum among a class of infinite metric graphs, a phenomenon that seems to have no known counterpart for Laplacians on Euclidean domains of infinite volume. In the case of discrete spectrum we then prove upper and lower bounds on eigenvalues, thus extending a number of bounds previously only known in the compact setting to infinite graphs. Some of our bounds, for instance in terms of the inradius, are new even on compact graphs.

Abstract:Let $\text{Fl}_{n,q}$ be the simplicial complex whose vertices are the non-trivial subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ and whose simplices correspond to families of subspaces forming a flag. Let $\Delta^{+}_k(\text{Fl}_{n,q})$ be the $k$-dimensional weighted upper Laplacian on $ \text{Fl}_{n,q}$. The spectrum of $\Delta^{+}_k(\text{Fl}_{n,q})$ was first studied by Garland, who obtained a lower bound on its non-zero eigenvalues. Here, we focus on the $k=0$ case. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of $\Delta_{0}^{+}(\text{Fl}_{n,q})$ as $q$ tends to infinity. In particular, we show that for large enough $q$, $\Delta_{0}^{+}(\text{Fl}_{n,q})$ has exactly $\left\lfloor n^2/4\right\rfloor+2$ distinct eigenvalues, and that every eigenvalue $\lambda\neq 0,n-1$ of $\Delta_{0}^{+}(\text{Fl}_{n,q})$ tends to $n-2$ as $q$ goes to infinity. This solves the $0$-dimensional case of a conjecture of Papikian.

Abstract:Motivated by extremal problems of weighted Dirichlet or Neumann eigenvalues, we will establish two fundamental results on the dependence of weighted eigenvalues of the one-dimensional p-Laplacian on indefinite integrable weights. One is the continuous differentiability of eigenvalues in weights in the Lebesgue spaces L γ with the usual norms. Another is the continuity of eigenvalues in weights with respect to the weak topologies in L γ spaces. Here 1 ≤ γ ≤ ∞. In doing so, we will give a simpler explanation to the corresponding spectrum problems, with the help of several typical techniques in nonlinear analysis such as the Fréchet derivative and weak* convergence.

Abstract:We consider the open unit disk D equipped with the hyperbolic metric and the associated hyperbolic Laplacian L . For λ ∈ C and n ∈ N , a λ-polyharmonic function of order n is a function f : D → C such that ( L − λ I ) n f = 0 . If n = 1 , one gets λ-harmonic functions. Based on a Theorem of Helgason on the latter functions, we prove a boundary integral representation theorem for λ-polyharmonic functions. For this purpose, we first determine n th -order λ-Poisson kernels. Subsequently, we introduce the λ-polyspherical functions and determine their asymptotics at the boundary ∂ D , i.e., the unit circle. In particular, this proves that, for eigenvalues not in the interior of the L 2 -spectrum, the zeroes of these functions do not accumulate at the boundary circle. Hence the polyspherical functions can be used to normalise the n th -order Poisson kernels. By this tool, we extend to this setting several classical results of potential theory: namely, we study the boundary behaviour of λ-polyharmonic functions, starting with Dirichlet and Riquier type problems and then proceeding to Fatou type admissible boundary limits.

Abstract:The fundamental theorem on commutant lifting due to Sarason does not carry over to the setting of the polydisc. This paper presents two classifications of commutant lifting in several variables. The first classification links the lifting problem to the contractivity of certain linear functionals. The second one transforms it into nonnegative real numbers. We also solve the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem for bounded analytic functions on the polydisc. Along the way, we solve a perturbation problem for bounded analytic functions. Commutant lifting and interpolation on the polydisc solve two well-known problems in Hilbert function space theory.

Abstract:In this paper we study the spectrum of a fundamental differential operator on a Hilbert-Pólya space. A number is an eigenvalue of this differential operator if and only if it is a nontrivial zero of the Riemann zeta function. An explicit formula is given for the eigenfunction associated with each nontrivial zero of the zeta function. Every eigenfunction is characterized via the Poisson summation formula by a sequence of mysterious functions whose explicit formulas are given.
