Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.

Abstract:We compute the groupoid homology for the ample groupoids associated with algebraic actions from rings of algebraic integers and integral dynamics. We derive results for the homology of the topological full groups associated with rings of algebraic integers, and we use our groupoid homology calculation to compute the K-theory for ring C*-algebras of rings of algebraic integers, recovering the results of Cuntz and Li and of Li and Lück without using Cuntz--Li duality. Moreover, we compute the K-theory for C*-algebras attached to integral dynamics, resolving the conjecture by Barlak, Omland, and Stammeier in full generality.

Abstract:Topological cyclic homology is a refinement of Connes--Tsygan's cyclic homology which was introduced by Bökstedt--Hsiang--Madsen in 1993 as an approximation to algebraic $K$-theory. There is a trace map from algebraic $K$-theory to topological cyclic homology, and a theorem of Dundas--Goodwillie--McCarthy asserts that this induces an equivalence of relative theories for nilpotent immersions, which gives a way for computing $K$-theory in various situations. The construction of topological cyclic homology is based on genuine equivariant homotopy theory, the use of explicit point-set models, and the elaborate notion of a cyclotomic spectrum. The goal of this paper is to revisit this theory using only homotopy-invariant notions. In particular, we give a new construction of topological cyclic homology. This is based on a new definition of the $\infty$-category of cyclotomic spectra: We define a cyclotomic spectrum to be a spectrum $X$ with $S^1$-action (in the most naive sense) together with $S^1$-equivariant maps $\varphi_p: X\to X^{tC_p}$ for all primes $p$. Here $X^{tC_p}=\mathrm{cofib}(\mathrm{Nm}: X_{hC_p}\to X^{hC_p})$ is the Tate construction. On bounded below spectra, we prove that this agrees with previous definitions. As a consequence, we obtain a new and simple formula for topological cyclic homology. In order to construct the maps $\varphi_p: X\to X^{tC_p}$ in the example of topological Hochschild homology we introduce and study Tate diagonals for spectra and Frobenius homomorphisms of commutative ring spectra. In particular we prove a version of the Segal conjecture for the Tate diagonals and relate these Frobenius homomorphisms to power operations.

Algebraic K-theory of reductive p-adic groups

Abstract:Motivated by the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for group rings, we formulate the $\mathcal{C}$op-Farrell-Jones Conjecture for the K-theory of Hecke algebras of td-groups. We prove this conjecture for (closed subgroups of) reductive p-adic groups G. In particular, the projective class group $K_0(\mathcal{H}(G))$ for a (closed subgroup) of a reductive p-adic group G can be computed as a colimit of projective class groups $K_0(\mathcal{H}(U))$ where U varies over the compact open subgroups of G. This implies that all finitely generated smooth complex representations of a reductive p-adic G admit finite projective resolutions by compactly induced representations. For SL$_n(F)$ we translate the colimit formula for $K_0(\mathcal{H}(G))$ to a more concrete cokernel description in terms of stabilizers for the action on the Bruhat-Tits building. For negative K-theory we obtain vanishing results, while we identify the higher K-groups $K_n(\mathcal{H}(G))$ with the value of G-homology theory on the extended Bruhat-Tits building. Our considerations apply to general Hecke algebras of the form $\mathcal{H}(G;R,\rho,\omega)$, where we allow a central character $\omega$ and a twist by an action $\rho$ of G on R. For the $\mathcal{C}$op-Farrell-Jones Conjecture we need to assume $\mathbb{Q} \subseteq R$ and a regularity assumption. As a key intermediate step we introduce the $\mathcal{C}vcy-Farrell-Jones conjecture. For the latter no regularity assumptions on R are needed.

Trace methods for coHochschild homology

Abstract:Hochschild homology is a classical invariant of rings that plays an important role because of its connection to algebraic $K$-theory via the Dennis trace. At level zero, the Dennis trace is induced by the Hattori-Stallings trace. In this paper, we introduce new algebraic $K$-theories of coalgebras and obtain coalgebraic refinements of the Hattori-Stallings trace that connect these algebraic $K$-theories to coHochschild homology (the invariant analogous to Hochschild homology but for coalgebras). We employ bicategorical methods of Ponto to show that coHochschild homology is a shadow. Consequently, we obtain that coHochschild homology is Morita-Takeuchi invariant.

Cdh Descent for Homotopy Hermitian $K$-Theory of Rings with Involution

Abstract:We provide a geometric model for the classifying space of automorphism groups of Hermitian vector bundles over a ring with involution $R$ such that $\frac{1}{2} \in R$; this generalizes a result of Schlichting-Tripathi \cite{SchTri}. We then prove a periodicity theorem for Hermitian $K$-theory and use it to construct an $E_\infty$ motivic ring spectrum $\mathbf{KR}^{\mathrm{alg}}$ representing homotopy Hermitian $K$-theory. From these results, we show that $\mathbf{KR}^{\mathrm{alg}}$ is stable under base change, and cdh descent for homotopy Hermitian $K$-theory of rings with involution is a formal consequence.

Abstract:In this paper we analyse for a $G$-$C^{*}$-algebra $A$ to which extent one can calculate the $K$-theory of the reduced crossed product $K(A\rtimes_{r}G)$ from the $K$-theory spectrum $K(A)$ with the induced $G$-action. We also consider some cases where one allows to use the $K$-theories of crossed products for some proper subgroups of $G$. Our central goal is to demonstrate the usefulness of a homotopy theoretic approach. We mainly concentrate on finite groups.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with residue field $\mathbb{F}$. We define a cyclic homology theory for algebras over $\mathbb{F}$, by lifting them to free algebras over $V$, which we enlarge to tube algebras and complete suitably. We show that this theory may be computed using any pro-dagger algebra lifting of an $\mathbb{F}$-algebra. We show that our theory is polynomially homotopy invariant, excisive, and matricially stable.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present a simple and explicit construction of the Bokstedt-Hsiang-Madsen cyclotomic trace relating algebraic K-theory and topological cyclic homology. Our construction also incorporates Goodwillie's idea of a global cyclotomic trace.

Abstract:By using K-theory, we construct a map from the tangent space to the Hilbert scheme at a point Y to the local cohomology group. And we use this map to answer affirmatively(after slight modification) a question by Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths in [8] on constructing a map from the tangent space to the Hilbert scheme to the tangent space to the cycle group.

Abstract:We revisit the computation, due to Hesselholt and Madsen, of the K-theory of truncated polynomial algebras for perfect fields of positive characteristic. The resulting K-groups are expressed in terms of big Witt vectors of the field. The original proof relied on an understanding of cyclic polytopes in order to determine the genuine equivariant homotopy type of the cyclic bar construction for a suitable monoid. Using the Nikolaus-Scholze framework for topological cyclic homology we achieve the same result using only the homology of said cyclic bar construction, as well as the action of Connes' operator.

A trace map on higher scissors congruence groups

Abstract:Cut-and-paste $K$-theory has recently emerged as an important variant of higher algebraic $K$-theory. However, many of the powerful tools used to study classical higher algebraic $K$-theory do not yet have analogues in the cut-and-paste setting. In particular, there does not yet exist a sensible notion of the Dennis trace for cut-and-paste $K$-theory. In this paper we address the particular case of the $K$-theory of polyhedra, also called scissors congruence $K$-theory. We introduce an explicit, computable trace map from the higher scissors congruence groups to group homology, and use this trace to prove the existence of some nonzero classes in the higher scissors congruence groups. We also show that the $K$-theory of polyhedra is a homotopy orbit spectrum. This fits into Thomason's general framework of $K$-theory commuting with homotopy colimits, but we give a self-contained proof. We then use this result to re-interpret the trace map as a partial inverse to the map that commutes homotopy orbits with algebraic $K$-theory.

Isomorphisms in K-theory from isomorphisms in groupoid homology theories

Abstract:We prove that for torsion-free amenable ample groupoids, an isomorphism in groupoid homology induced by an étale correspondence yields an isomorphism in the K-theory of the associated $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebras. We apply this to extend X. Li's K-theory formula for left regular inverse semigroup $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebras. These results are obtained by developing the functoriality of the ABC spectral sequence.

Abstract:Abstract We consider the semi-direct products $G={\mathbb{Z}}^{2}\rtimes GL_{2}({\mathbb{Z}}), {\mathbb{Z}}^{2}\rtimes SL_{2}({\mathbb{Z}})$, and ${\mathbb{Z}}^{2}\rtimes \Gamma (2)$ (where $\Gamma (2)$ is the congruence subgroup of level 2). For each of them, we compute both sides of the Baum–Connes conjecture, namely the equivariant $K$-homology of the classifying space $\underline{E}G$ for proper actions on the left-hand side, and the analytical K-theory of the reduced group $C^{*}$-algebra on the right-hand side. The computation of the LHS is made possible by the existence of a 3-dimensional model for $\underline{E}G$, which allows to replace equivariant K-homology by Bredon homology. We pay due attention to the presence of torsion in $G$, leading to an extensive study of the wallpaper groups associated with finite subgroups. For the first and third groups, the computations in $K_{0}$ provide explicit generators that are matched by the Baum–Connes assembly map.

Trace methods for stable categories I: The linear approximation of algebraic K-theory

Abstract:We study algebraic K-theory and topological Hochschild homology in the setting of bimodules over a stable category, a datum we refer to as a laced category. We show that in this setting both K-theory and THH carry universal properties, the former defined in terms of additivity and the latter via trace invariance. We then use these universal properties in order to construct a trace map from laced K-theory to THH, and show that it exhibits THH as the first Goodwillie derivative of laced K-theory in the bimodule direction, generalizing the celebrated identification of stable K-theory by Dundas-McCarthy, a result which is the entryway to trace methods.

Abstract:We investigate the relative assembly map from the family of finite subgroups to the family of virtually cyclic subgroups for the algebraic $K$-theory of twisted group rings of a group G with coefficients in a regular ring R or, more generally, with coefficients in a regular additive category. They are known to be isomorphisms rationally. We show that it suffices to invert only those primes p for which G contains a non-trivial finite p-group and p is not invertible in R. The key ingredient is the detection of Nil-terms of a twisted group ring of a finite group F after localizing at p in terms of the p-subgroups of F using Verschiebungs and Frobenius operators. We construct and exploit the structure of a module over the ring of big Witt vectors on the Nil-terms. We analyze the algebraic K-theory of the Hecke algebras of subgroups of reductive p-adic groups in prime characteristic.

Abstract:In \verb|<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1212.5901" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1212.5901">arXiv:1212.5901</a>| we associated an algebra $\Gami(\fA)$ to every bornological algebra $\fA$ and an ideal $I_{S(\fA)}\triqui\Gami(\fA)$ to every symmetric ideal $S\triqui\elli$. We showed that $I_{S(\fA)}$ has $K$-theoretical properties which are similar to those of the usual stabilization with respect to the ideal $J_S\triqui\cB$ of the algebra $\cB$ of bounded operators in Hilbert space which corresponds to $S$ under Calkin's correspondence. In the current article we compute the relative cyclic homology $HC_*(\Gami(\fA):I_{S(\fA)})$. Using these calculations, and the results of \emph{loc. cit.}, we prove that if $\fA$ is a $C^*$-algebra and $c_0$ the symmetric ideal of sequences vanishing at infinity, then $K_*(I_{c_0(\fA)})$ is homotopy invariant, and that if $*\ge 0$, it contains $K^{\top}_*(\fA)$ as a direct summand. This is a weak analogue of the Suslin-Wodzicki theorem (\cite{sw1}) that says that for the ideal $\cK=J_{c_0}$ of compact operators and the $C^*$-algebra tensor product $\fA\sotimes\cK$, we have $K_*(\fA\sotimes\cK)=K^{\top}_*(\fA)$. Similarly, we prove that if $\fA$ is a unital Banach algebra and $\ell^{\infty-}=\bigcup_{q<\infty}\ell^q$, then $K_*(I_{\ell^{\infty-}(\fA)})$ is invariant under Hölder continuous homotopies, and that for $*\ge 0$ it contains $K^{\top}_*(\fA)$ as a direct summand. These $K$-theoretic results are obtained from cyclic homology computations. We also compute the relative cyclic homology groups $HC_*(\Gami(\fA):I_{S(\fA)})$ in terms of $HC_*(\elli(\fA):S(\fA))$ for general $\fA$ and $S$. For $\fA=\C$ and general $S$, we further compute the latter groups in terms of algebraic differential forms. We prove that the map $HC_n(\Gami(\C):I_{S(\C)})\to HC_n(\cB:J_S)$ is an isomorphism in many cases.
