Abstract:A multi-agent system (MAS) that composed of multiple interacting intelligent agents can be used to solve problems which are difficult or impossible for an individual agent or monolithic system to solve. Since the agent is autonomous and intelligent, it is reasonable to assume that it choice the behavior to bring itself the maximal benefit. Thus, the cooperation and coordination can be achieved successfully if we can wisely design the utility function for every agent so that every agent can get the maximal reward from the cooperation to accomplish a given task. However, the utility function of one agent usually involves those of others for most “real-world” cooperation needed tasks. Moreover, it is not uncommon that the conflicts between the gains of these agents arise. In other words, the individual optimality is not always consistent with collective optimality in MAS. These conflicts will reduce the collective utility if there is no coordination among these decentralized, autonomous agents. This paper addresses the essential that in MAS the action of one agent may influence the action of others and there usually be conflicts among the payoff of one another. We investigated the optimal coordination approach for multi-agent foraging, a typical MAS task, from the point view of game theory. After introduced several concepts, we built the equivalence between the optimal solution of MAS and the equilibrium of the game corresponding to that situation, and then we introduced evolutionarily stable strategy into the approach hope that it maybe be of service in addressing the equilibrium selection problem of traditional game theory. Finally, based on the hawk-dove game model, an evolutionarily cooperation foraging algorithm (ECFA) is proposed to evolve a stable evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) and bring the maximal reward for the group. If there be some change in the configuration of the environment, ECFA can, then, evolve to the new ESS automatically. And we also proposed a reinforcement factor to accelerate the convergence process of ECFA and thus make a new algorithm Accelerated ECFA (AECFA). These techniques were shown to be successful by the multi-agent foraging simulations.

Abstract:The optimal solution for the cooperation win-win task for Multi-agent system (MAS) was studied and a automatic negotiation reciprocal mechanism was build in this paper for the typical case of multi- agent foraging. The equivalences between agent in MAS and player in game theory, optimal solution in MAS and equilibrium in game theory, and cooperation task in MAS and multi-stage Markov game were then established. To the difficulties of equilibriums selection, a hawk dove game model, which is a uncorrelated asymmetry game, is build from the point view of evolutionary game theory. And a self-enforcing cooperative algorithm based on replicator dynamic was proposed to find the evolutionary stable strategy of hawk dove game. The simulation verified the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Traditional evolutionary game theory describes how certain strategy spreads throughout the system where individual player imitates the most successful strategy among its neighborhood. Accordingly, player doesn't have own authority to change their state. However in the human society, peoples do not just follow strategies of other people, they choose their own strategy. In order to see the decision of each agent in timely basis and differentiate between network structures, we conducted multi-agent based modeling and simulation. In this paper, agent can decide its own strategy by payoff comparison and we name this agent as "Self-motivated agent". To explain the behavior of self-motivated agent, prisoner's dilemma game with cooperator, defector, loner and punisher are considered as an illustrative example. We performed simulation by differentiating participation rate, mutation rate and the degree of network, and found the special coexisting conditions.

Abstract:A single agent has limited knowledge and problem-solving capability. To solve a problem well, the agent should cooperate with other agents. So the multi-agent systems(MAS) are paid wildly attention to by many researchers so far. In a multi-system, agent would have an adaptive capability to deal with the variety of environment according to adaptive learning. In this paper, starting with architecture of agent, the formation of communicational message among agents is presented, and the reasons why agents need to collaborate with the others are also given. Finally, we proposed a cooperation model in an agent group and mostly discussed a corporation strategy. We mainly analyze one of two cooperation algorithms and give a simulation experiment in the paper at last.
A Game-Theoretic Utility Network for Cooperative Multi-Agent Decisions in Adversarial Environments

Abstract:Underlying relationships among multi-agent systems (MAS) in hazardous scenarios can be represented as Game-theoretic models. We measure the performance of MAS achieving tasks from the perspective of balancing success probability and system costs. This paper proposes a new network-based model called Game-theoretic Utility Tree (GUT), which decomposes high-level strategies into executable low-level actions for cooperative MAS decisions. This is combined with a new payoff measure based on agent needs for real-time strategy games. We present an Explore game domain to evaluate GUT against the state-of-the-art QMIX decision-making method. Conclusive results on extensive numerical simulations indicate that GUT can organize more complex relationships among MAS cooperation, helping the group achieve challenging tasks with lower costs and a higher winning rate.

A Synergy of Institutional Incentives and Networked Structures in Evolutionary Game Dynamics of Multi-agent Systems

Abstract:Understanding the emergence of prosocial behaviours (e.g., cooperation and trust) among self-interested agents is an important problem in many disciplines. Network structure and institutional incentives (e.g., punishing antisocial agents) are known to promote prosocial behaviours, when acting in isolation, one mechanism being present at a time. Here we study the interplay between these two mechanisms to see whether they are independent, interfering or synergetic. Using evolutionary game theory, we show that punishing antisocial agents and a regular networked structure not only promote prosocial behaviours among agents playing the trust game, but they also interplay with each other, leading to interference or synergy, depending on the game parameters. Synergy emerges on a wider range of parameters than interference does. In this domain, the combination of incentives and networked structure improves the efficiency of incentives, yielding prosocial behaviours at a lower cost than the incentive does alone. This has a significant implication in the promotion of prosocial behaviours in multi-agent systems.

Abstract:Exploring the collective behavior of interacting entities is of great interest and importance. Rather than focusing on static and uniform connections, we examine the co-evolution of diverse mobile agents experiencing varying interactions across both space and time. Analogous to the social dynamics of intrinsically diverse individuals who navigate between and interact within various physical or digital locations, agents in our model traverse a complex network of heterogeneous environments and engage with everyone they encounter. The precise nature of agents internal dynamics and the various interactions that nodes induce are left unspecified and can be tailored to suit the requirements of individual applications. We derive effective dynamical equations for agent states which are instrumental in investigating thresholds of consensus, devising effective attack strategies to hinder coherence, and designing optimal network structures with inherent node variations in mind. We demonstrate that agent cohesion can be promoted by increasing agent density, introducing network heterogeneity, and intelligently designing the network structure, aligning node degrees with the corresponding interaction strengths they facilitate. Our findings are applied to two distinct scenarios: the synchronization of brain activities between interacting individuals, as observed in recent collective MRI scans, and the emergence of consensus in a cusp catastrophe model of opinion dynamics.

Abstract:Agent-based models (ABMs) simulate the formation and evolution of social processes at a fundamental level by decoupling agent behavior from global observations. In the case where ABM networks evolve over time as a result of (or in conjunction with) agent states, there is a need for understanding the relationship between the dynamic processes and network structure. Social networks provide a natural set of tools for understanding the emergent relationships of these systems. This work examines the utility of a collection of network comparison methods for the purpose of tracking network changes in an ABM over time or between model parameters. Among the techniques examined is a novel graph pseudometric based on heat content asymptotics, which have been shown to distinguish many isospectral graphs which are not isomorphic. Additionally, we establish the use of observations about real-world networks from network science (e.g. fat-tailed degree distribution, small-world property) for ABM validation in the case where empirical population data is unavailable. These methods are all demonstrated on systematic perturbations of an original model simulating the formation of friendships in a population of 20,000 agents in Cincinnati, OH.

Abstract:There are two purposes in this paper. First, it presents an approach to designing an agent. For adapting to the cooperative requests of the agents in a multi-agent system, we distinguish between the two aspects of underlying attributes of an agent: individual and organizational. And introduce a concept "pairs of roles". The other purpose is to show how to express the behavioral semantics of an agent and a multi-agent system with the "state transition graph". The individual attributes of an agent consist of beliefs and intentions, and for intentions we adopt the "twin-subset semantics" developed by us. While the organizational attributes of an agent consist of "pairs of roles". These compose the state of individual agent and the relations between agents. The state transitions are produced by the behaviors of agents and materialize the dynamic characters of agent and the turn of a multi-agent system. And the behaviors arise from the mental states of agents and the situations.
Interplay Between Cooperation-Enhancing Mechanisms in Evolutionary Games with Tag-Mediated Interactions

Abstract:Cooperation is fundamental for the long-term survival of biological, social, and technological networks. Previously, mechanisms for the enhancement of cooperation, such as network reciprocity, have largely been studied in isolation and with often inconclusive findings. Here, we present an evolutionary, multiagent-based, and spatially explicit computer model to specifically address the interactive interplay between such mechanisms. We systematically investigate the effects of phenotypic diversity, network structure, and rewards on cooperative behavior emerging in a population of reproducing artificial decision makers playing tag-mediated evolutionary games. Cooperative interactions are rewarded such that both the benefits of recipients and costs of donators are affected by the reward size. The reward size is determined by the number of cooperative acts occurring within a given reward time frame. Our computational experiments reveal that small reward frames promote unconditional cooperation in populations with both low and high diversity, whereas large reward frames lead to cycles of conditional and unconditional strategies at high but not at low diversity. Moreover, an interaction between rewards and spatial structure shows that relative to small reward frames, there is a strong difference between the frequency of conditional cooperators populating rewired versus non-rewired networks when the reward frame is large. Notably, in a less diverse population, the total number of defections is comparable across different network topologies, whereas in more diverse environments defections become more frequent in a regularly structured than in a rewired, small-world network of contacts. Acknowledging the importance of such interaction effects in social dilemmas will have inevitable consequences for the future design of cooperation-enhancing protocols in large-scale, distributed, and decentralized systems such as peer-to-peer networks.

In this article, we evaluate how and if these tools can offer any value-addition in the modeling & simulation of complex networks such as pervasive computing, large-scale peer-to-peer systems, and networks involving considerable environment and human/animal/habitat interaction. Specifically, we demonstrate the effectiveness of NetLogo - a tool that has been widely used in the area of agent-based social simulation.

AdaSociety: An Adaptive Environment with Social Structures for Multi-Agent Decision-Making

Abstract:Traditional interactive environments limit agents' intelligence growth with fixed tasks. Recently, single-agent environments address this by generating new tasks based on agent actions, enhancing task diversity. We consider the decision-making problem in multi-agent settings, where tasks are further influenced by social connections, affecting rewards and information access. However, existing multi-agent environments lack a combination of adaptive physical surroundings and social connections, hindering the learning of intelligent behaviors. To address this, we introduce AdaSociety, a customizable multi-agent environment featuring expanding state and action spaces, alongside explicit and alterable social structures. As agents progress, the environment adaptively generates new tasks with social structures for agents to undertake. In AdaSociety, we develop three mini-games showcasing distinct social structures and tasks. Initial results demonstrate that specific social structures can promote both individual and collective benefits, though current reinforcement learning and LLM-based algorithms show limited effectiveness in leveraging social structures to enhance performance. Overall, AdaSociety serves as a valuable research platform for exploring intelligence in diverse physical and social settings. Enabling Imitation-Based Cooperation in Dynamic Social Networks

Abstract:The emergence of cooperation among self-interested agents has been a key concern of the multi-agent systems community for decades. With the increased importance of network-mediated interaction, researchers have shifted the attention on the impact of social networks and their dynamics in promoting or hindering cooperation, drawing various context-dependent conclusions. For example, some lines of research, theoretical and experimental, suggest the existence of a threshold effect in the ratio of timescales of network evolution, after which cooperation will emerge, whereas other lines dispute this, suggesting instead a Goldilocks zone. In this paper we provide an evolutionary game theory framework to understand coevolutionary processes from a bottom up perspective - in particular the emergence of a cooperator-core and defector-periphery - clarifying the impact of partner selection and imitation strategies in promoting cooperative behaviour, without assuming underlying communication or reputation mechanisms. In doing so we provide a unifying framework to study imitation-based cooperation in dynamic social networks and show that disputes in the literature can in fact coexist in so far as the results stem from different equally valid assumptions.

Abstract:The evolution of cooperation in social interactions remains a central topic in interdisciplinary research, often drawing debates on altruistic versus self-regarding preferences. Moving beyond these debates, this study investigates how autonomous agents (AAs) with a range of social preferences interact with human players in one-shot, anonymous prisoner's dilemma games. We explore whether AAs, programmed with preferences that vary from self-interest to other-regarding behavior, can foster increased cooperation among humans. To do this, we have refined the traditional Bush–Mosteller reinforcement learning algorithm to integrate these diverse social preferences, thereby shaping the AAs' strategic behavior. Our results indicate that even a minority presence of AAs, programmed with a moderate aspiration level, can significantly elevate cooperation levels among human participants in well-mixed situations. However, the structure of the population is a critical factor: we observe increased cooperation in well-mixed populations when imitation strength is weak, whereas networked populations maintain enhanced cooperation irrespective of the strength of imitation. Interestingly, the degree to which AAs promote cooperation is modulated by their social preferences. AAs with pro-social preferences, which balance their own payoffs with those of their opponents, foster the highest levels of cooperation. Conversely, AAs with either extremely altruistic or purely individualistic preferences tend to hinder cooperative dynamics. This research provides valuable insights into the potential of advanced AAs to steer social dilemmas toward more cooperative outcomes. It presents a computational perspective for exploring the complex interplay between social preferences and cooperation, potentially guiding the development of AAs to improve cooperative efforts in human societies.

Asymmetric interaction preference induces cooperation in human-agent hybrid game

Abstract:With the development of artificial intelligence, human beings are increasingly interested in human-agent collaboration, which generates a series of problems about the relationship between agents and humans, such as trust and cooperation. This inevitably induces the inherent human characteristic that there are subjective interaction preferences for different groups, especially in human-agent hybrid systems where human-human interaction, agent-agent interaction, and human-agent interaction coexist. However, understanding how individual interaction preferences affect the cooperation of the system remains a major challenge. Therefore, this paper proposes a human-agent hybrid prisoner's dilemma game system under the framework of evolutionary game. In spatial networks, the most significant difference between agents and humans is the flexibility of decision, where humans have higher adaptive capabilities, follow link dynamics, and adopt free decision rules, which enable them to choose different strategies for different neighbors. However, agents follow node dynamics and adopt consistent decision rules, applying the same strategy to different neighbors. We give the subjective preferences of any individual to different groups, involving the interaction preferences between homogeneous groups and heterogeneous groups respectively. The simulation results show that both human and agent have asymmetric interaction preferences for groups with different identities, which can significantly improve the cooperative behavior of the system. In the hybrid system, human groups show more stable prosocial behavior. Agent groups can form highly cooperative clusters under the condition of strong interaction preference for human groups. In addition, giving agents the ability to identify opponents can effectively alleviate the interaction dilemma of agents.

Abstract:The significance of network structures in promoting group cooperation within social dilemmas has been widely recognized. Prior studies attribute this facilitation to the assortment of strategies driven by spatial interactions. Although reinforcement learning has been employed to investigate the impact of dynamic interaction on the evolution of cooperation, there remains a lack of understanding about how agents develop neighbour selection behaviours and the formation of strategic assortment within an explicit interaction structure. To address this, our study introduces a computational framework based on multi-agent reinforcement learning in the spatial Prisoner's Dilemma game. This framework allows agents to select dilemma strategies and interacting neighbours based on their long-term experiences, differing from existing research that relies on preset social norms or external incentives. By modelling each agent using two distinct Q-networks, we disentangle the coevolutionary dynamics between cooperation and interaction. The results indicate that long-term experience enables agents to develop the ability to identify non-cooperative neighbours and exhibit a preference for interaction with cooperative ones. This emergent self-organizing behaviour leads to the clustering of agents with similar strategies, thereby increasing network reciprocity and enhancing group cooperation.

Abstract:Multi-agent learning is a challenging problem in machine learning that has applications in different domains such as distributed control, robotics, and economics. We develop a prescriptive model of multi-agent behavior using Markov games. Since in many multi-agent systems, agents do not necessary select their optimum strategies against other agents (e.g., multi-pedestrian interaction), we focus on models in which the agents play "exploration but near optimum strategies". We model such policies using the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution. This leads to a set of coupled Bellman equations that describes the behavior of the agents. We introduce a set of conditions under which the set of equations admit a unique solution and propose two algorithms that provably provide the solution in finite and infinite time horizon scenarios. We also study a practical setting in which the interactions can be described using the occupancy measures and propose a simplified Markov game with less complexity. Furthermore, we establish the connection between the Markov games with exploration strategies and the principle of maximum causal entropy for multi-agent systems. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our algorithms via several well-known games from the literature and some games that are designed based on real world applications.

Abstract:Mutualistic interactions are vital constituents of ecological and socio-economic systems. Empirical studies have found that the patterns of reciprocal relations among the participants often shows the salient features of being simultaneously nested and modular. Whether and how these two structural properties of mutualistic networks can emerge out of a common mechanism however remains unclear. We propose a unified dynamic model based on the adaptation of niche relations that gives rise to both structural features. We apply Hutchinson's concept of niche interaction to networked cooperative species. Their niche relation evolves under the assumption of fitness maximization. Modularity and nestedness emerge concurrently through the accumulated local advantages in the structural and demographic distribution. A rich ensemble of key dynamical behaviors are unveiled in the dynamical framework. We demonstrate that mutualism can exhibit either a stabilizing or destabilizing effect on the evolved network, which undergoes a drastic transition with the overall competition level. Most strikingly, the adaptive network may exhibit a profound nature of history-dependency in response to environmental changes, allowing it to be found in alternative stable structures. The adaptive nature of niche interactions, as captured in our framework, can underlie a broad class of ecological relations and also socio-economic networks that engage in bipartite cooperation.

Abstract:For a given multi-agent system where the local interaction rule of the existing agents can not be re-designed, one way to intervene the collective behavior of the system is to add one or a few special agents into the group which are still treated as normal agents by the existing ones. We study how to lead a Vicsek-like flocking model to reach synchronization by adding special agents. A popular method is to add some simple leaders (fixed-headings agents). However, we add one intelligent agent, called 'shill', which uses online feedback information of the group to decide the shill's moving direction at each step. A novel strategy for the shill to coordinate the group is proposed. It is strictly proved that a shill with this strategy and a limited speed can synchronize every agent in the group. The computer simulations show the effectiveness of this strategy in different scenarios, including different group sizes, shill speed, and with or without noise. Compared to the method of adding some fixed-heading leaders, our method can guarantee synchronization for any initial configuration in the deterministic scenario and improve the synchronization level significantly in low density groups, or model with noise. This suggests the advantage and power of feedback information in intervention of collective behavior.
