Abstract:Cooperation among individuals is considered to play an important role in the evolution of complex networked systems in physical, biological, economical and even epidemiological worlds, but its effects on the development of the systems is not so clear. We consider a specific kind of primal cooperation in a group of individuals, i.e., an individual never cooperates with others except when compelled to do so. The lowest level of compelled cooperation, in which cooperators share no message or resources, is investigated in the background of complex networks driven by the simple game rock-paper-scissors. Simulation results show that with the evolution of the systems, the cooperation will spread all over the networks, and finally results in systems with modular structures and a scale-free property.

Abstract:Based on the evolutionary theory,we construct a dynamic model about the formation of network organization.By using the evolutionary game theory,we study the process of formation about the relationship between the members of network organization,and the operation mechanism.We think that the formation of network organization is a result of spontaneous gaming of members that are always searching the possible profit.Based on information about the past repeated actions between the members of the network organization,forms the routine mechanism in the level of network organization,which reflects a operation mechanism and an inertia effect maintaining the network organization in some state.
A New Dynamic Community Model For Social Networks

Abstract:In this paper, based on the phenomenon that individuals join into and jump from the organizations in the society, we propose a dynamic community model to construct social networks. Two parameters are adopted in our model, one is the communication rate P-a that denotes the connection strength in the organization and the other is the turnover rate P-b, that stands for the frequency of jumping among the organizations. Based on simulations, we analyze not only the degree distribution, the clustering coefficient, the average distance and the network diameter but also the group distribution which is closely related to their community structure. Moreover, we discover that the networks generated by the proposed model possess the small-world property and can well reproduce the networks of social contacts.

Abstract:This paper aims to understand the effects of online communities on the network structure and their marketing implications. To account for the fact that communities are not formed exogenously, we model and estimate how they co-evolve with the friendship network. We control for unobserved heterogeneity and homophily by modeling individuals’ latent positions and similarities. Using data from a worldwide Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) Game, we find that individuals’ friendship formation decision and community membership decision reinforce each other. Moreover, model simulation reveals that, under some circumstances, online communities may promote not only within-community ties but also cross-community ties. Here, one important moderating factor is the community stickiness, which is captured by the positive effects of an individual’s number of friends in a community on her probability of staying in that community (instead of switching to a different community). As shown by our simulated diffusion exercises, only a moderately sticky community system promotes cross-community ties and consequently improves information reach. This insight helps social platforms manage online communities more effectively to improve the marketing value of social networks.

Abstract:Using network analysis, psychologists have already found the nontrivial correlation between personality and social network structure. Despite the large amount of empirical studies, theoretical analysis and formal models behind such relationship are still lacking. To bridge this gap, we propose a generative model for friendship networks based on personality traits. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to explicitly introduce the concept of personality and friendship development into a social network model, with supporting insights from social and personality psychology. We use the model to investigate the effect of two personality traits, extraversion and agreeableness, on network structure. Analytical and simulation results both concur with recent empirical evidence that extraversion and agreeableness are positively correlated with degree. Using this model, we show that the effect of personality on friendship development can amount to the effect of personality on friendship network structure.
Emergence of Scale-Free Close-Knit Friendship Structure in Online Social Networks

Abstract:Although the structural properties of online social networks have attracted much attention, the properties of the close-knit friendship structures remain an important question. Here, we mainly focus on how these mesoscale structures are affected by the local and global structural properties. Analyzing the data of four large-scale online social networks reveals several common structural properties. It is found that not only the local structures given by the indegree, outdegree, and reciprocal degree distributions follow a similar scaling behavior, the mesoscale structures represented by the distributions of close-knit friendship structures also exhibit a similar scaling law. The degree correlation is very weak over a wide range of the degrees. We propose a simple directed network model that captures the observed properties. The model incorporates two mechanisms: reciprocation and preferential attachment. Through rate equation analysis of our model, the local-scale and mesoscale structural properties are derived. In the local-scale, the same scaling behavior of indegree and outdegree distributions stems from indegree and outdegree of nodes both growing as the same function of the introduction time, and the reciprocal degree distribution also shows the same power-law due to the linear relationship between the reciprocal degree and in/outdegree of nodes. In the mesoscale, the distributions of four closed triples representing close-knit friendship structures are found to exhibit identical power-laws, a behavior attributed to the negligible degree correlations. Intriguingly, all the power-law exponents of the distributions in the local-scale and mesoscale depend only on one global parameter, the mean in/outdegree, while both the mean in/outdegree and the reciprocity together determine the ratio of the reciprocal degree of a node to its in/outdegree. Structural properties of numerical simulated networks are analyzed and compared with each of the four real networks. This work helps understand the interplay between structures on different scales in online social networks.

Abstract:Evolution modeling of complex network is a fruitful field, yet few studies have modeled system with spatial information like human brain, and methods for modeling spatial system tend to get inconsistent results. The current study examines a class of models whose primary goal is to explain network properties. And base on the complex network theory to give the statistical analysis of the final complex network under different mechanism, with the assumption that probability of having edge depended on distance between nodes, obtain some interesting results: the statistical properties of complex network has no difference between determined and stochastic algorithm. And we get networks with a hierarchical structure.

Abstract:Cooperative behavior that increases the fitness of others at a cost to oneself can be promoted by natural selection only in the presence of an additional mechanism. One such mechanism is based on population structure, which can lead to clustering of cooperating agents. Recently, the focus has turned to complex dynamical population structures such as social networks, where the nodes represent individuals and links represent social relationships. We investigate how the dynamics of a social network can change the level of cooperation in the network. Individuals either update their strategies by imitating their partners or adjust their social ties. For the dynamics of the network structure, a random link is selected and breaks with a probability determined by the adjacent individuals. Once it is broken, a new one is established. This linking dynamics can be conveniently characterized by a Markov chain in the configuration space of an ever-changing network of interacting agents. Our model can be analytically solved provided the dynamics of links proceeds much faster than the dynamics of strategies. This leads to a simple rule for the evolution of cooperation: The more fragile links between cooperating players and non-cooperating players are (or the more robust links between cooperators are), the more likely cooperation prevails. Our approach may pave the way for analytically investigating coevolution of strategy and structure.
Structural Property and Cooperative Behavior in a Growing Model of Networks with Sequential and Preferential Linking

Abstract:Growing networks are common in nature and society. The structure of a network is usually affected by the ways of linking. Incorporating both the sequential and preferential linking within a growth model, we investigate the characteristics of a family of networks. By adjusting mixed attachment in proportion, both the small world phenomenon and a power-law degree distribution are found. There are two novel findings of our work: (1) there exists a minimum value of the clustering coefficient, which represents a transition between different network structures; (2) The degree distribution can change from a delta function to a power-law, which provides us a useful tool to discuss the effects of degree distribution on the evolutionary dynamics within a wide range. Based on continuum theory, we give an analytic calculation of the degree distribution, which is coincident with our numerical simulations. Finally, we play an evolutionary game on the proposed model and find the relationship between individual behaviors and the standard deviation of the degree distribution.

Abstract:This paper examines the process of clique formation among company employees using the agent-based simulation model.With the reciprocity principle and the resource exchange theory,the model exhibits how interactions lead to interpersonal connections,which gradually form small groups whose members provide mutual support but exclude others from getting in.These small groups are eventually shaped into cliques.For the present study,two work-environment variables and one organizational-culture variable were selected to examine the factors that might influence clique formation.The resulting curve showed that heavy work load beyond one's resources and inequality in work assignment could accelerate the formation of cliques and their further demarcations;on the other hand,very light work load and perfect equality in work assignment tended to reduce interpersonal interactions,hence employee isolation.

Abstract:There are seven areas in social network research. First, how field forces or interference factors in the collective social network structure influence relations; second, how relations influence individual actions; third, how field forces or interference factors in the collective social network structure influence individuals' structural positions, fourth, how individuals' structural positions influence their individual actions; fifth, how individual actions influence the collective social network structure, sixth, how the collective social network influences collective actions, and seventh, how collective actions influence field forces. This paper takes the organizational theory and management research as examples to illustrate the research contents in each area and explains how social network serves as a bridge to connect collective actions and individual actions. The phenomenon of self-organization refutes the notion of collective actions equaling to a linear sum of individual actions; it manifests features of a complex phenomenon-different self-organizations will lead to action ramifications and identical individual actions may result in opposing collective actions in different structures. To solve this non-linear riddle is the important task in future social network research.

Abstract:A model has been proposed to simulate the evolution of interpersonal relationships in a social group. The small social community is simply assumed as an undirected and weighted graph, where individuals are denoted by vertices, and the extent of favor or disfavor between them are represented by the corresponding edge weight. One could further define the strength of vertices to describe the individual popularity. The strength evolution exhibits a nonlinear behavior. Meanwhile, various acute perturbations to the system have been investigated. In the framework of our model, it is also interesting to study the adaptive process of a new student joining a class midway.

Memory effects induce structure in social networks with activity-driven agents

Abstract:Activity-driven modeling has been recently proposed as an alternative growth mechanism for time varying networks, displaying power-law degree distribution in time-aggregated representation. This approach assumes memoryless agents developing random connections, thus leading to random networks that fail to reproduce two-nodes degree correlations and the high clustering coefficient widely observed in real social networks. In this work we introduce these missing topological features by accounting for memory effects on the dynamic evolution of time-aggregated networks. To this end, we propose an activity-driven network growth model including a triadic-closure step as main connectivity mechanism. We show that this mechanism provides some of the fundamental topological features expected for social networks. We derive analytical results and perform extensive numerical simulations in regimes with and without population growth. Finally, we present two cases of study, one comprising face-to-face encounters in a closed gathering, while the other one from an online social friendship network.

Abstract:Analyzing and mining students' behaviors and interactions from big data is an essential part of education data mining. Based on the data of campus smart cards, which include not only static demographic information but also dynamic behavioral data from more than 30000 anonymous students, in this paper, the evolution features of friendship and the relations between behavior characters and student interactions are investigated. On the one hand, four different evolving friendship networks are constructed by means of the friend ties proposed in this paper, which are extracted from monthly consumption records. In addition, the features of the giant connected components (GCCs) of friendship networks are analyzed via social network analysis (SNA) and percolation theory. On the other hand, two high-level behavior characters, orderliness and diligence, are adopted to analyze their associations with student interactions. Our experiment/empirical results indicate that the sizes of friendship networks have declined with time growth and both the small-world effect and power-law degree distribution are found in friendship networks. Second, the results of the assortativity coefficient of both orderliness and diligence verify that there are strong peer effects among students. Finally, the percolation analysis of orderliness on friendship networks shows that a phase transition exists, which is enlightening in that swarm intelligence can be realized by intervening the key students near the transition point.

Abstract:In this work we present a strategic network formation model predicting the emergence of multigroup structures. Individuals decide to form or remove links based on the benefits and costs those connections carry; we focus on bilateral consent for link formation. An exogenous system specifies the frequency of coordination issues arising among the groups. We are interested in structures that arise to resolve coordination issues and, specifically, structures in which groups are linked through bridging, redundant, and co-membership interconnections. We characterize the conditions under which certain structures are stable and study their efficiency as well as the convergence of formation dynamics.

Abstract:We investigate two paradigms for studying the evolution of cooperation—Prisoner's Dilemma and Snowdrift game in an online friendship network, obtained from a social networking site. By structural analysis, it is revealed that the empirical social network has small-world and scale-free properties. Besides, it exhibits assortative mixing pattern. Then, we study the evolutionary version of the two types of games on it. It is found that cooperation is substantially promoted with small values of game matrix parameters in both games. Whereas the competent cooperators induced by the underlying network of contacts will be dramatically inhibited with increasing values of the game parameters. Further, we explore the role of assortativity in evolution of cooperation by random edge rewiring. We find that increasing amount of assortativity will to a certain extent diminish the cooperation level. We also show that connected large hubs are capable of maintaining cooperation. The evolution of cooperation on empirical networks is influenced by various network effects in a combined manner, compared with that on model networks. Our results can help understand the cooperative behaviors in human groups and society.

Abstract:Complex systems contain a lot of individuals and some interactions between them. The structure of interactions can be modeled to be a network: nodes represent individuals and links to be interaction between two individuals. This paper tries to investigate how structure of interactions in the system will affect the power-law behaviors based on the BS co-evolution model from points of system size, the density of connectivity and the ways of connectivity of the interaction network. The current experiments show that small size, high density of connectivity and random connected way will weaken the power-law distribution.

Abstract:The past few decades have witnessed a prevalence of applying dynamical models to the study of social networks. This paper reviews recent advances in the investigation of social networks with a predominant focus on agent-based models. Starting from classical models of opinion dynamics, we survey several recently developed models on opinion formation and social power evolution. These models extend the classical models’ cognitive assumption that individuals’ opinions evolve on a single issue by incorporating various sociological or psychological hypotheses to account for the evolution of opinions over multiple or a sequence of interdependent issues. We summarize basic results on the asymptotic behaviors of these models and discuss their sociological interpretations. In addition, we show how these models play a role in the emergence of collective intelligence by applying them to a naïve learning setting. Novel results that reveal how individuals successfully learn an unknown truth over issue sequences are presented. Finally, we conclude the paper and discuss potential directions for future research.

Abstract:How interactions between individuals contribute to the emergence of complex societies is a major question in behavioural ecology. Nonetheless, little remains known about the type of immediate social structure (i.e. social network) that emerges from relationships that maximize beneficial interactions (e.g. social attraction towards informed individuals) and minimize costly relationships (e.g. social avoidance of infected group mates). We developed an agent-based model where individuals vary in the degree to which individuals signal benefits versus costs to others and, on this basis, choose with whom to interact depending on simple rules of social attraction (e.g. access to the highest benefits) and social avoidance (e.g. avoiding the highest costs). Our main findings demonstrate that the accumulation of individual decisions to avoid interactions with highly costly individuals, but that are to some extent homogeneously beneficial, leads to more modular networks. On the contrary, individuals favouring interactions with highly beneficial individuals, but that are to some extent homogeneously costly, lead to less modular networks. Interestingly, statistical models also indicate that when individuals have multiple potentially beneficial partners to interact with, and no interaction cost exists, this also leads to more modular networks. Yet, the degree of modularity is contingent upon the variability in benefit levels held by individuals. We discuss the emergence of modularity in the systems and their consequences for understanding social trade-offs.

Abstract:In recent years, studies in many fields have widely explored diffusion in social networks, which refers to the collective behavior of a set of autonomous social actors who interact with something (such as opinions, viruses, or innovations) in social networks. Many researchers have utilized a multiagent method to explore the effects of social actor characteristics and behavioral complexity on information diffusion. This method performs well in modeling the complex characteristics and decision-making of social actors. Although this subject has been intensively studied, analyses have typically been limited to concerns about the effects of entire social network structures, such as the small-world and scale-free aspects. Few empirical information diffusion studies have systematically investigated causal effects and decision-making mechanisms under the constraints of the interaction structures of agents. In practice, we observed that the decision-making of each agent in information diffusion was significantly influenced and constrained by its contextual network structures. To solve this problem, this study utilizes the cause–effect graph method to model the interaction structures of agents in social networks and presents agent decision-making models under the constraints of local network structures in information diffusion. The proposed models and methods can be used to effectively analyze the mechanism of the influence of structured interaction relations of agents on the process of decision-making and diffusion results. Moreover, the presented decision-making model can comprehensively consider the factors of social positions of heterogeneous agents, interaction strengths, and diffusion strategies, and thus, can better match the features of real-world influence diffusion in social networks.
