Abstract:The problem of graph reconstruction has been studied in its various forms over the years. In particular, the Reconstruction Conjecture, proposed by Ulam and Kelly in 1942, has attracted much research attention and yet remains one of the foremost unsolved problems in graph theory. Recently, Bastide, Cook, Erickson, Groenland, Kreveld, Mannens, and Vermeulen proposed a new model of partial information, where we are given the set of connected triples T_3, which is the set of 3-subsets of the vertex set that induce connected subgraphs. They proved that reconstruction is unique within the class of triangle-free graphs, 2-connected outerplanar graphs, and maximal planar graphs. They also showed that almost every graph can be uniquely reconstructed from their connected triples. However, little is known about other classes of non-triangle-free graphs within which reconstruction can occur uniquely, nor do we understand what kind of graphs can be uniquely reconstructed from their connected triples without assuming anything about the classes of graphs to which they belong. The main result of this paper is a complete characterization of all graphs that can be uniquely reconstructed from their connected triples T_3. We also show that reconstruction from T_3 is unique within the class of regular planar graphs, 5-connected planar graphs, certain strongly regular graphs, and complete multi-partite graphs, whereas it is not unique for the class of k-connected planar graphs with k less or equal to 4, Eulerian graphs, or Hamiltonian graphs.

Abstract:About 70 years ago, the reconstruction conjecture was proposed as an interesting problem in graph theory. In this paper, we extend the concept of reconstruction to fuzzy graphs and introduce the new concept of recognizable properties. We then explore various recognizable properties of fuzzy graphs, including regularity, degree sequence, strength, and block. Additionally, we identify some reconstructable fuzzy graphs. Finally, in conclusion, the reconstruction of fuzzy graphs can be applied to recover old maps by analyzing old photos.

Abstract:Harary and Lauri conjectured that the class reconstruction number of trees is 2, that is, each tree has two unlabelled vertex-deleted subtrees that are not both in the deck of any other tree. We show that each tree $T$ can be reconstructed up to isomorphism given two of its unlabelled subgraphs $T-u$ and $T-v$ under the assumption that $u$ and $v$ are chosen in a particular way. Our result does not completely resolve the conjecture of Harary and Lauri since the special property defining $u$ and $v$ cannot be recognised from the given subtrees $T-u$ and $T-v$.

Abstract:We study a problem of reconstruction of connected graphs where the input gives all subsets of size k that induce a connected subgraph. Originally introduced by Bastide et al. (WG 2023) for triples ($k=3$), this problem received comprehensive attention in their work, alongside a study by Qi, who provided a complete characterization of graphs uniquely reconstructible via their connected triples, i.e. no other graphs share the same set of connected triples. Our contribution consists in output-polynomial time algorithms that enumerate every triangle-free graph (resp. every graph with bounded maximum degree) that is consistent with a specified set of connected $k$-sets. Notably, we prove that triangle-free graphs are uniquely reconstructible, while graphs with bounded maximum degree that are consistent with the same $k$-sets share a substantial common structure, differing only locally. We suspect that the problem is NP-hard in general and provide a NP-hardness proof for a variant where the connectivity is specified for only some $k$-sets (with $k$ at least 4).

Abstract:The $(n-\ell)$-deck of an $n$-vertex graph is the multiset of (unlabeled) subgraphs obtained from it by deleting $\ell$ vertices. An $n$-vertex graph is $\ell$-reconstructible if it is determined by its $(n-\ell)$-deck, meaning that no other graph has the same deck. We prove that every tree with at least $6\ell+11$ vertices is $\ell$-reconstructible.

Abstract:We examine indivisibility for classes of graphs. We show that the class of hereditarily $\alpha$-sparse graphs is indivisible if and only if $\alpha > 2$. Additionally, we show that the following classes of graphs are indivisible: perfect graphs, cographs, and chordal graphs, and the following classes of graphs are not indivisible: threshold graphs, split graphs, and distance-hereditary graphs.

Recoloring some hereditary graph classes

Abstract:The reconfiguration graph of the $k$-colorings, denoted $R_k(G)$, is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-colorings of $G$ and two colorings are adjacent in $R_k(G)$ if they differ in color on exactly one vertex. A graph $G$ is said to be recolorable if $R_{\ell}(G)$ is connected for all $\ell\geq \chi(G)$+1. In this paper, we study the recolorability of several graph classes restricted by forbidden induced subgraphs. We prove some properties of a vertex-minimal graph $G$ which is not recolorable. We show that every (triangle, $H$)-free graph is recolorable if and only if every (paw, $H$)-free graph is recolorable. Every graph in the class of $(2K_2,\ H)$-free graphs, where $H$ is a 4-vertex graph except $P_4$ or $P_3$+$P_1$, is recolorable if $H$ is either a triangle, paw, claw, or diamond. Furthermore, we prove that every ($P_5$, $C_5$, house, co-banner)-free graph is recolorable.

Abstract:Let G be a 3-connected ordered graph with n vertices and m edges. Let be a randomly chosen mapping of these n vertices to the integer range for . Let be the vector of m Euclidean lengths of G 's edges under . In this paper, we show that, with high probability over , we can efficiently reconstruct both G and from . This reconstruction problem is NP-HARD in the worst case, even if both G and are given. We also show that our results stand in the presence of small amounts of error in , and in the real setting, with sufficiently accurate length measurements. Our method combines lattice reduction, which has previously been used to solve random subset sum problems, with an algorithm of Seymour that can efficiently reconstruct an ordered graph given an independence oracle for its matroid.

Decomposition horizons and a characterization of stable hereditary classes of graphs

Abstract:The notions of bounded-size and quasibounded-size decompositions with bounded treedepth base classes are central to the structural theory of graph sparsity introduced by two of the authors years ago, and provide a characterization of both classes with bounded expansions and nowhere dense classes. In this paper, we first prove that the model theoretic notions of dependence and stability are, for hereditary classes of graphs, compatible with quasibounded-size decompositions, in the following sense: every hereditary class with quasibounded-size decompositions with dependent (resp.\ stable) base classes is itself dependent (resp.\ stable). This result is obtained in a more general study of ``decomposition horizons'', which are class properties compatible with quasibounded-size decompositions. We deduce that hereditary classes with quasibounded-size decompositions with bounded shrubdepth base classes are stable. In the second part of the paper, we prove the converse. Thus, we characterize stable hereditary classes of graphs as those hereditary classes that admit quasibounded-size decompositions with bounded shrubdepth base classes. This result is obtained by proving that every hereditary stable class of graphs admits almost nowhere dense quasi-bush representations, thus answering positively a conjecture of Dreier et al. These results have several consequences. For example, we show that every graph $G$ in a stable, hereditary class of graphs $\mathscr C$ has a clique or a stable set of size $\Omega_{\mathscr C,\epsilon}(|G|^{1/2-\epsilon})$, for every $\epsilon>0$, which is tight in the sense that it cannot be improved to $\Omega_{\mathscr C}(|G|^{1/2})$.

Abstract:We study an issue commonly seen with graph data analysis: many real-world complex systems involving high-order interactions are best encoded by hypergraphs; however, their datasets often end up being published or studied only in the form of their projections (with dyadic edges). To understand this issue, we first establish a theoretical framework to characterize this issue's implications and worst-case scenarios. The analysis motivates our formulation of the new task, supervised hypergraph reconstruction: reconstructing a real-world hypergraph from its projected graph, with the help of some existing knowledge of the application domain. To reconstruct hypergraph data, we start by analyzing hyperedge distributions in the projection, based on which we create a framework containing two modules: (1) to handle the enormous search space of potential hyperedges, we design a sampling strategy with efficacy guarantees that significantly narrows the space to a smaller set of candidates; (2) to identify hyperedges from the candidates, we further design a hyperedge classifier in two well-working variants that capture structural features in the projection. Extensive experiments validate our claims, approach, and extensions. Remarkably, our approach outperforms all baselines by an order of magnitude in accuracy on hard datasets. Embedded Graph Reconstruction under Hausdorff Noise

Abstract:Filamentary structures (topologically embedded graphs with a metric structure) are ubiquitous in science and engineering. A challenging problem in topological data analysis (TDA) is to reconstruct the topology and geometry of such an underlying (usually unknown) metric graph from possibly noisy data sampled around it. Reeb graphs have recently been successfully employed in abstract metric graph reconstruction under Gromov$\unicode{x2013}$Hausdorff noise: the sample is assumed to be metrically close to the ground truth. However, such a strong global density assumption is hardly achieved in applications, making the existing Reeb graph-based methods untractible. We relax the density assumption to give provable geometric reconstruction schemes, even when the sample is metrically close only locally. A very different yet more relevant paradigm focuses on the reconstruction of metric graphs$\unicode{x2014}$embedded in the Euclidean space$\unicode{x2014}$from Euclidean samples that are only Hausdorff-close. We further extend our methodologies to provide novel, provable guarantees for the successful geometric reconstruction of Euclidean graphs under the Hausdorff noise model. Our technique produces promising results in reconstructing earthquake plate tectonic boundaries from the global earthquake catalog.

Rigidity and reconstruction in matroids of highly connected graphs

Abstract:A graph matroid family $\mathcal{M}$ is a family of matroids $\mathcal{M}(G)$ defined on the edge set of each finite graph $G$ in a compatible and isomorphism-invariant way. We say that $\mathcal{M}$ has the Whitney property if there is a constant $c$ such that every $c$-connected graph $G$ is uniquely determined by $\mathcal{M}(G)$. Similarly, $\mathcal{M}$ has the Lovász-Yemini property if there is a constant $c$ such that for every $c$-connected graph $G$, $\mathcal{M}(G)$ has maximal rank among graphs on the same number of vertices. We show that if $\mathcal{M}$ is unbounded (that is, there is no absolute constant bounding the rank of $\mathcal{M}(G)$ for every $G$), then $\mathcal{M}$ has the Whitney property if and only if it has the Lovász-Yemini property. We also give a complete characterization of these properties in the bounded case. As an application, we show that if some graph matroid families have the Whitney property, then so does their union. Finally, we show that every $1$-extendable graph matroid family has the Lovász-Yemini (and thus the Whitney) property. These results unify and extend a number of earlier results about graph reconstruction from an underlying matroid.

Reconstructibility of the $K_r$-count from $n-1$ cards

Abstract:The Reconstruction Conjecture of Kelly and Ulam states that any graph $G$ with $n\geq 3$ vertices can be reconstructed from the multiset $\mathcal{D}(G)$ of unlabelled subgraphs $G-v$ for all $v\in V(G)$. We refer to $\mathcal{D}(G)$ as the \emph{deck} of $G$ and $G-v\in \mathcal{D}(G)$ as the cards of $G$. This was posed in the 1940s and is still wide open today. In an effort to understand reconstructibility better, a growing collection of research is concerned with understanding what properties of $G$ can be reconstructed from a (potentially adversarially chosen) collection of $k$ cards for some $k< n$. In this paper, we show that the clique count of $G$ is reconstructible for all but one size of clique from any $n-1$ cards. We extend this result by showing that for graphs with average degree at most $3n/8-O(1)$ we can reconstruct the $K_r$-count for all $r$, and that for $r\le \log_2 n$ we can reconstruct the $K_r$-count for every graph on $n$ vertices.

Abstract:Extending the work of Godsil and others, we investigate the notion of the inverse of a graph (specifically, of bipartite graphs with a unique perfect matching). We provide a concise necessary and sufficient condition for the invertibility of such graphs and generalize the notion of invertibility to multigraphs. We examine the question of whether there exists a "litmus subgraph" whose bipartiteness determines invertibility. As an application of our invertibility criteria, we quickly describe all invertible unicyclic graphs. Finally, we describe a general combinatorial procedure for iteratively constructing invertible graphs, giving rise to large new families of such graphs.

Abstract:A renowned theorem of Blind and Mani, with a constructive proof by Kalai and an efficiency proof by Friedman, shows that the whole face lattice of a simple polytope can be determined from its graph. This is part of a broader story of reconstructing face lattices from partial information, first considered comprehensively in Grünbaum’s 1967 book. This survey paper includes varied results and open questions by many researchers on simplicial polytopes, nearly simple polytopes, cubical polytopes, zonotopes, crosspolytopes, and Eulerian posets.

On the Expressibility of the Reconstructional Color Refinement

Abstract:One of the most basic facts related to the famous Ulam reconstruction conjecture is that the connectedness of a graph can be determined by the deck of its vertex-deleted subgraphs, which are considered up to isomorphism. We strengthen this result by proving that connectedness can still be determined when the subgraphs in the deck are given up to equivalence under the color refinement isomorphism test. Consequently, this implies that connectedness is recognizable by Reconstruction Graph Neural Networks, a recently introduced GNN architecture inspired by the reconstruction conjecture (Cotta, Morris, Ribeiro 2021).

Generalized Word-Representable Graphs

Abstract:The literature on word-representable graphs is quite rich, and a number of variations of the original definition have been proposed over the years. We are initiating a systematic study of such variations based on formal languages. In our framework, we can associate a graph class to each language over the binary alphabet \{0,1\}. All graph classes that are language-representable in this sense are hereditary and enjoy further common properties. Besides word-representable graphs and, more generally, 1^k- or k-11-representable graphs, we can identify many more graph classes in our framework, like (co)bipartite graphs, (co)comparability graphs, to name a few. It was already known that any graph is 111- or 2-11-representable. When such representations are considered for storing graphs, 111- or 2-11-representability bears the disadvantage of being significantly inferior to standard adjacency matrices or lists. We prove that quite famous languages like the palindromes, the copy language or the Lyndon words can match the efficiency of standard graph representations. The perspective of language theory allows us to prove general results that hold for all graph classes that can be defined in this way. This includes certain closure properties (e.g., all language-definable graph classes are hereditary) as well as certain limitations (e.g., all language-representable graph classes contain graphs of arbitrarily large treewidth and of arbitrarily large degeneracy, except a trivial case). As each language describes a graph class, we can also ask decidability questions concerning graph classes, given a concrete presentation of a formal language. We also present a systematic study of graph classes that can be represented by languages in which each letter occurs at most twice. Here, we find graph classes like interval, permutation, circle, bipartite chain, convex, and threshold graphs.

Abstract:Perfect graphs form one of the distinguished classes of finite simple graphs. In 2006, Chudnovsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas proved that a graph is perfect if and only if it has no odd holes and no odd antiholes as induced subgraphs, which was conjectured by Berge. We consider the class ${\mathcal A}$ of graphs that have no odd holes, no antiholes and no odd stretchers as induced subgraphs. In particular, every graph belonging to ${\mathcal A}$ is perfect. Everett and Reed conjectured that a graph belongs to ${\mathcal A}$ if and only if it is perfectly contractile. In the present paper, we discuss graphs belonging to ${\mathcal A}$ from a viewpoint of commutative algebra. In fact, we conjecture that a perfect graph $G$ belongs to ${\mathcal A}$ if and only if the toric ideal of the stable set polytope of $G$ is generated by quadratic binomials. Especially, we show that this conjecture is true for Meyniel graphs, perfectly orderable graphs, and clique separable graphs, which are perfectly contractile graphs.
