Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 566-589, March 2024. Modular decomposition focuses on repeatedly identifying a module [math] (a collection of vertices that shares exactly the same neighborhood outside of [math]) and collapsing it into a single vertex. This notion of exactitude of neighborhood is very strict, especially when dealing with real-world graphs. We study new ways to relax this exactitude condition. However, generalizing modular decomposition is far from obvious. Most of the previous proposals lose algebraic properties of modules and thus most of the nice algorithmic consequences. We introduce the notion of an [math]-module, a relaxation that maintains some of the algebraic structure. It leads to a new combinatorial decomposition with interesting properties. Among the main results in this work, we show that minimal [math]-modules can be computed in polynomial time, and we generalize series and parallel operation between graphs. This leads to [math]-cographs which have interesting properties. We study how to generalize Gallai's theorem corresponding to the case for [math], but unfortunately we give evidence that computing such a decomposition tree can be difficult.

Subgraph densities and scaling limits of random graphs with a prescribed modular decomposition

Abstract:We consider large uniform labeled random graphs in different classes with prescribed decorations in their modular decomposition. Our main result is the estimation of the number of copies of every graph as an induced subgraph. As a consequence, we obtain the convergence of a uniform random graph in such classes to a Brownian limit object in the space of graphons. Our proofs rely on combinatorial arguments, computing generating series using the symbolic method and deriving asymptotics using singularity analysis.

Abstract:Suppose that there is an unknown underlying graph $G$ on a large vertex set, and we can test only a proportion of the possible edges to check whether they are present in $G$. If $G$ has high modularity, is the observed graph $G'$ likely to have high modularity? We see that this is indeed the case under a mild condition, in a natural model where we test edges at random. We find that $q^*(G') \geq q^*(G)-\varepsilon$ with probability at least $1-\varepsilon$, as long as the expected number edges in $G'$ is large enough. Similarly, $q^*(G') \leq q^*(G)+\varepsilon$ with probability at least $1-\varepsilon$, under the stronger condition that the expected average degree in $G'$ is large enough. Further, under this stronger condition, finding a good partition for $G'$ helps us to find a good partition for $G$.

A recursive linear time modular decomposition algorithm via LexBFS

Abstract:A module of a graph G is a set of vertices that have the same set of neighbours outside. Modules of a graphs form a so-called partitive family and thereby can be represented by a unique tree MD(G), called the modular decomposition tree. Motivated by the central role of modules in numerous algorithmic graph theory questions, the problem of efficiently computing MD(G) has been investigated since the early 70's. To date the best algorithms run in linear time but are all rather complicated. By combining previous algorithmic paradigms developed for the problem, we are able to present a simpler linear-time that relies on very simple data-structures, namely slice decomposition and sequences of rooted ordered trees.

Abstract:In this paper, a new general decomposition theory inspired from modular graph decomposition is presented. Our main result shows that, within this general theory, most of the nice algorithmic tools developed for modular decomposition are still efficient. This theory not only unifies the usual modular decomposition generalisations such as modular decomposition of directed graphs or decomposition of 2-structures, but also star cutsets and bimodular decomposition. Our general framework provides a decomposition algorithm which improves the best known algorithms for bimodular decomposition.

Abstract:The reconfiguration graph of the $k$-colorings of a graph $G$, denoted $R_{k}(G)$, is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-colorings of $G$ and two colorings are adjacent in $R_{k}(G)$ if they differ in color on exactly one vertex. A graph $G$ is said to be recolorable if $R_{\ell}(G)$ is connected for all $\ell \geq \chi(G)$+1. We use the modular decomposition of several graph classes to prove that the graphs in the class are recolorable. In particular, we prove that every ($P_5$, diamond)-free graph, every ($P_5$, house, bull)-free graph, and every ($P_5$, $C_5$, co-fork)-free graph is recolorable.

Abstract:In this article we use the modular decomposition technique for exact solving the weighted maximum clique problem. Our algorithm takes the modular decomposition tree from the paper of Tedder et. al. and finds solution recursively. Also, we propose algorithms to construct graphs with modules. We show some interesting results, comparing our solution with Ostergard's algorithm on DIMACS benchmarks and on generated graphs

Abstract:We relate two important notions in graph theory: expanders which are highly connected graphs, and modularity a parameter of a graph that is primarily used in community detection. More precisely, we show that a graph having modularity bounded below 1 is equivalent to it having a large subgraph which is an expander. We further show that a connected component $H$ will be split in an optimal partition of the host graph $G$ if and only if the relative size of $H$ in $G$ is greater than an expansion constant of $H$. This is a further exploration of the resolution limit known for modularity, and indeed recovers the bound that a connected component $H$ in the host graph~$G$ will not be split if~$e(H)<\sqrt{2e(G)}$.

Reconstructing edge-deleted unicyclic graphs

Abstract:The Harary reconstruction conjecture states that any graph with more than four edges can be uniquely reconstructed from its set of maximal edge-deleted subgraphs. In 1977, Müller verified the conjecture for graphs with $n$ vertices and $n \log_2(n)$ edges, improving on Lovás's bound of $\log(n^2-n)/4$. Here, we show that the reconstruction conjecture holds for graphs which have exactly one cycle and and three non-isomorphic subtrees.

Abstract:Modular data is the most significant invariant of a modular tensor category. We pursue an approach to the classification of modular data of modular tensor categories by building the modular $S$ and $T$ matrices directly from irreducible representations of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z}/n \mathbb{Z})$. We discover and collect many conditions on the $SL_2(\mathbb{Z}/n \mathbb{Z})$ representations to identify those that correspond to some modular data. To arrive at concrete matrices from representations, we also develop methods that allow us to select the proper basis of the $SL_2(\mathbb{Z}/n \mathbb{Z})$ representations so that they have the form of modular data. We apply this technique to the classification of rank-$6$ modular tensor categories, obtaining a classification up to modular data. Most of the calculations can be automated using a computer algebraic system, which can be employed to classify modular data of higher rank modular tensor categories.

Modularity of nearly complete graphs and bipartite graphs

Abstract:It is known that complete graphs and complete multipartite graphs have modularity zero. We show that the least number of edges we may delete from the complete graph $K_n$ to obtain a graph with non-zero modularity is $\lfloor n/2\rfloor +1$. Similarly we determine the least number of edges we may delete from or add to a complete bipartite graph to reach non-zero modularity. We give some corresponding results for complete multipartite graphs, and a short proof that complete multipartite graphs have modularity zero. We also analyse the modularity of very dense random graphs, and in particular we find that there is a transition to modularity zero when the average degree of the complementary graph drops below 1.

Abstract:A natural generalization of the recognition problem for a geometric graph class is the problem of extending a representation of a subgraph to a representation of the whole graph. A related problem is to find representations for multiple input graphs that coincide on subgraphs shared by the input graphs. A common restriction is the sunflower case where the shared graph is the same for each pair of input graphs. These problems translate to the setting of comparability graphs where the representations correspond to transitive orientations of their edges. We use modular decompositions to improve the runtime for the orientation extension problem and the sunflower orientation problem to linear time. We apply these results to improve the runtime for the partial representation problem and the sunflower case of the simultaneous representation problem for permutation graphs to linear time. We also give the first efficient algorithms for these problems on circular permutation graphs.

Abstract:We describe a category of undirected graphs which comes equipped with a faithful functor into the category of (colored) modular operads. The associated singular functor from modular operads to presheaves is fully faithful, and its essential image can be classified by a Segal condition. This theorem can be used to recover a related statement, due to André Joyal and Joachim Kock, concerning a larger category of undirected graphs whose functor to modular operads is not just faithful but also full.

Abstract:We show that given a graph G we can CMSO-transduce its modular decomposition, its split decomposition and its bi-join decomposition. This improves results by Courcelle [Logical Methods in Computer Science, 2006] who gave such transductions using order-invariant MSO, a strictly more expressive logic than CMSO. Our methods more generally yield C2MSO-transductions of the canonical decomposition of weakly-partitive set systems and weakly-bipartitive systems of bipartitions.

Abstract:A decomposition$${\fancyscript {D}}$$ of a graph H by a graph G is a partition of the edge set of H such that the subgraph induced by the edges in each part of the partition is isomorphic to G. The intersection graph$${I(\fancyscript {D})}$$ of the decomposition $${\fancyscript {D}}$$ has a vertex for each part of the partition and two parts A and B are adjacent iff they share a common node in H. If $${I(\fancyscript {D})\cong H}$$ , then $${\fancyscript {D}}$$ is an automorphic decomposition of H. In this paper we show how automorphic decompositions serve as a common generalization of configurations from geometry and graceful labelings on graphs. We will give several examples of automorphic decompositions as well as necessary conditions for their existence.

Abstract:We introduce structured decompositions. These are category-theoretic data structures which simlutaneously generalize notions from graph theory (including tree-width, layered tree-width, co-tree-width and graph decomposition width) geometric group theory (specifically Bass-Serre theory) and dynamical systems (e.g. hybrid dynamical systems). Furthermore, structured decompositions allow us to generalize these aforementioned combinatorial invariants, which have played a central role in the study of structural and algorithmic compositionality in both graph theory and parameterized complexity, to new settings. For example, in any category with enough colimits they describe algorithmically useful structural compositionality: as an application of our theory we prove an algorithmic meta-theorem for the Sub_P-composition problem. In concrete terms, when instantiated in the category of graphs, this meta-theorem yields compositional algorithms for NP-hard problems such as: Maximum Bipartite Subgraph, Maximum Planar Subgraph and Longest Path.
