Abstract:The Ghirlanda-Guerra identities are one of the most mysterious features of spin glasses. We prove the GG identities in a large class of models that includes the Edwards-Anderson model, the random field Ising model, and the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model in the presence of a random external field. Previously, the GG identities were rigorously proved only `on average' over a range of temperatures or under small perturbations.

Abstract:We show that, under the conditions known to imply the validity of the Parisi formula, if the generic Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Hamiltonian contains a $p$-spin term then the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities for the $p$th power of the overlap hold in a strong sense without averaging. This implies strong version of the extended Ghirlanda-Guerra identities for mixed $p$-spin models than contain terms for all even $p\geq 2$ and $p=1.$

Abstract:Spin-glasses constitute a well-grounded framework for evolutionary models. Of particular interest for (some of) these models is the lack of self-averaging of their order parameters (e.g. the Hamming distance between the genomes of two individuals), even in asymptotic limits, much as like the behavior of the overlap between the configurations of two replica in mean-field spin-glasses. In the latter, this lack of self-averaging is related to peculiar fluctuations of the overlap, known as Ghirlanda-Guerra identities and Aizenman-Contucci polynomials, that cover a pivotal role in describing the ultrametric structure of the spin-glass landscape. As for evolutionary models, such identities may therefore be related to a taxonomic classification of individuals, yet a full investigation on their validity is missing. In this paper, we study ultrametric identities in simple cases where solely random mutations take place, while selective pressure is absent, namely in {\em flat landscape} models. In particular, we study three paradigmatic models in this setting: the {\em one parent model} (which, by construction, is ultrametric at the level of single individuals), the {\em homogeneous population model} (which is replica symmetric), and the {\em species formation model} (where a broken-replica scenario emerges at the level of species). We find analytical and numerical evidence that in the first and in the third model nor the Ghirlanda-Guerra neither the Aizenman-Contucci constraints hold, rather a new class of ultrametric identities is satisfied; in the second model all these constraints hold trivially. Very preliminary results on a real biological human genome derived by {\em The 1000 Genome Project Consortium} and on two artificial human genomes (generated by two different types neural networks) seem in better agreement with these new identities rather than the classic ones.

Abstract:We consider the deterministic model with glassy behaviour, recently introduced by Marinari, Parisi and Ritort, with \ha\ $H=\sum_{i,j=1}^N J_{i,j}\sigma_i\sigma_j$, where $J$ is the discrete sine Fourier transform. The ground state found by these authors for $N$ odd and $2N+1$ prime is shown to become asymptotically dege\-ne\-ra\-te when $2N+1$ is a product of odd primes, and to disappear for $N$ even. This last result is based on the explicit construction of a set of eigenvectors for $J$, obtained through its formal identity with the imaginary part of the propagator of the quantized unit symplectic matrix over the $2$-torus.

Abstract:In this paper we give another proof of the fact that a random overlap array, which satisfies the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities and whose elements take values in a finite set, is ultrametric with probability one. The new proof bypasses random change of density invariance principles for directing measures of such arrays and, in addition to the Dobvysh-Sudakov representation, is based only on elementary algebraic consequences of the Ghirlanda-Guerra identities.

Abstract:The geometric frustration of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagome (triangles-in-triangles) lattice is investigated within the framework of an exact analytical method based on the generalized star-triangle mapping transformation. Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are obtained along with other exact results for the partition function, Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, entropy, and specific heat, by establishing a precise mapping relationship to the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on the Kagome lattice. It is shown that the residual entropy of the disordered spin liquid phase is for the quantum Ising-Heisenberg model significantly lower than for its semi-classical Ising limit (S_0/N_T k_B = 0.2806 and 0.4752, respectively), which implies that quantum fluctuations partially lift a macroscopic degeneracy of the ground-state manifold in the frustrated regime. The investigated model system has an obvious relevance to a series of polymeric coordination compounds Cu_9X_2(cpa)_6 (X=F, Cl, Br and cpa=carboxypentonic acid) for which we made a theoretical prediction about the temperature dependence of zero-field specific heat.

Abstract:The main result in this paper is motivated by the Mézard–Parisi ansatz which predicts a very special structure for the distribution of spins in diluted mean field spin glass models, such as the random K$$K$$-sat model at positive temperature. Using the fact that one can safely assume the validity of the Ghirlanda–Guerra identities in these models, we prove hierarchical exchangeability of pure states for the asymptotic Gibbs measures, which allows us to apply a representation result for hierarchically exchangeable arrays recently proved in Austin and Panchenko in Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 2013. Comparing this representation with the predictions of the Mézard–Parisi ansatz, one can see that the key property still missing is that the multi-overlaps between pure states depend only on their overlaps.

Abstract:Ising spin glasses with bimodal and Gaussian near-neighbor interaction distributions are studied through numerical simulations. The non-self-averaging (normalized inter-sample variance) parameter $U_{22}(T,L)$ for the spin glass susceptibility (and for higher moments $U_{nn}(T,L)$) is reported for dimensions 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7. In each dimension $d$ the non-self-averaging parameters in the paramagnetic regime vary with the sample size L and the correlation length $\xi(T,L)$ as $U_{nn}(\beta,L) = [K_{d}\xi(T,L)/L]^d$, and so follow a renormalization group law due to Aharony and Harris (1991). Empirically, it is found that the $K_{d}$ values are independent of d to within the statistics. The maximum values $[U_{nn}(T,L)]_{\max}$ are almost independent of L in each dimension, and remarkably the estimated thermodynamic limit critical $[U_{nn}(T,L)]_{\max}$ peak values are also dimension-independent to within the statistics and so are "hyperuniversal". These results show that the form of the spin-spin correlation function distribution at criticality in the large $L$ limit is independent of dimension within the ISG family. Inspection of published non-self-averaging data for 3D Heisenberg and XY spin glasses the light of the Ising spin glass non-self-averaging results show behavior incompatible with a spin-driven ordering scenario, but compatible with that expected on a chiral-driven ordering interpretation.

Abstract:Ising spin-glass models with bimodal, Gaussian, uniform, and Laplacian interaction distributions in dimension five are studied through detailed numerical simulations. The data are analyzed in both the finite-size scaling regime and the thermodynamic limit regime. It is shown that the values of critical exponents and of dimensionless observables at criticality are model dependent. Models in a single universality class have identical values for each of these critical parameters, so Ising spin-glass models in dimension five with different interaction distributions each lie in different universality classes. This result confirms conclusions drawn from measurements in dimension four and dimension two.

Abstract:We present three new identities in law for quadratic functionals of conditioned bivariate Gaussian processes. In particular, our results provide a two-parameter generalization of a celebrated identity in law, involving the path variance of a Brownian bridge, due to Watson (1961). The proof is based on ideas from a recent note by J. R. Pycke (2005) and on the stochastic Fubini theorem for general Gaussian measures proved in Deheuvels et al. (2004).

Abstract:We introduce and discuss discrete two-dimensional models for XY spin systems and screw dislocations in crystals. We prove that, as the lattice spacing $\e$ tends to zero, the relevant energies in these models behave like a free energy in the complex Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity, justifying in a rigorous mathematical language the analogies between screw dislocations in crystals and vortices in superconductors. To this purpose, we introduce a notion of asymptotic variational equivalence between families of functionals in the framework of $\Gamma$-convergence. We then prove that, in several scaling regimes, the complex Ginzburg-Landau, the XY spin system and the screw dislocation energy functionals are variationally equivalent. Exploiting such an equivalence between dislocations and vortices, we can show new results concerning the asymptotic behavior of screw dislocations in the $|\log\e|^2$ energetic regime.

Abstract:The Discrete Gaussian model is the lattice Gaussian free field conditioned to be integer-valued. In two dimensions, at sufficiently high temperature, we show that the scaling limit of the infinite-volume gradient Gibbs state with zero mean is a multiple of the Gaussian free field. This article is the second in a series on the Discrete Gaussian model, extending the methods of the first paper by the analysis of general external fields (rather than macroscopic test functions on the torus). As a byproduct, we also obtain a scaling limit for mesoscopic test functions on the torus.

Abstract:We establish relations between different characterizations of order in spin glass models. We first prove that the broadening of the replica overlap distribution indicated by a nonzero standard deviation of the replica overlap implies the non-differentiability of the two-replica free energy with respect to the replica coupling parameter . In invariant models such as the standard Edwards–Anderson model, the non-differentiability is equivalent to the spin glass order characterized by a nonzero Edwards–Anderson order parameter. This generalization of Griffiths' theorem is proved for any short-range spin glass models with classical bounded spins. We also prove that the non-differentiability of the two-replica free energy mentioned above implies replica symmetry breaking in the literal sense, i.e., a spontaneous breakdown of the permutation symmetry in the model with three replicas. This is a general result that applies to a large class of random spin models, including long-range models such as the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model and the random energy model. Abstract:Direct measurements of the spin glass correlation function $G(R)$ for Gaussian and bimodal Ising spin glasses in dimension two have been carried out in the temperature region $T \sim 1$. In the Gaussian case the data are consistent with the known anomalous dimension value $\eta \equiv 0$. For the bimodal spin glass in this temperature region $T > T^{*}(L)$, well above the crossover $T^{*}(L)$ to the ground state dominated regime, the effective exponent $\eta$ is clearly non-zero and the data are consistent with the estimate $\eta \sim 0.28(4)$ given by McMillan in 1983 from similar measurements. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the Binder cumulant $U_{4}(T,L)$ and the normalized correlation length $\xi(T,L)/L$ for the two models confirms the conclusion that the 2D bimodal model has a non-zero effective $\eta$ both below and above $T^{*}(L)$. The 2D bimodal and Gaussian interaction distribution Ising spin glasses are not in the same Universality class.

The scaling limit of boundary spin correlations in non-integrable Ising models

Abstract:We consider a class of non-integrable 2D Ising models obtained by perturbing the nearest-neighbor model via a weak, finite range potential which preserves translation and spin-flip symmetry, and we study its critical theory in the half-plane. We prove that the leading order long-distance behavior of the correlation functions for spins on the boundary is the same as for the nearest-neighbor model, up to an analytic multiplicative renormalization constant. In particular, the scaling limit is the Pfaffian of an explicit matrix. The proof is based on an exact representation of the generating function of correlations in terms of a Grassmann integral and on a multiscale analysis thereof, generalizing previous results to include observables located on the boundary.

Abstract:We unveil the multifractal behavior of Ising spin glasses in their low-temperature phase. Using the Janus II custom-built supercomputer, the spin-glass correlation function is studied locally. Dramatic fluctuations are found when pairs of sites at the same distance are compared. The scaling of these fluctuations, as the spin-glass coherence length grows with time, is characterized through the computation of the singularity spectrum and its corresponding Legendre transform. A comparatively small number of site pairs controls the average correlation that governs the response to a magnetic field. We explain how this scenario of dramatic fluctuations (at length scales smaller than the coherence length) can be reconciled with the smooth, self-averaging behavior that has long been considered to describe spin-glass dynamics.

Abstract:The Discrete Gaussian Chain is a model of interfaces $\Psi : \mathbf{Z} \to \mathbf{Z}$ governed by the Hamiltonian $$ H(\Psi)= \sum_{i\neq j} J_\alpha(|i-j|) |\Psi_i -\Psi_j|^2 $$ with long-range coupling constants $J_\alpha(k)\asymp k^{-\alpha}$. For any $\alpha\in [2,3)$ and at high enough temperature, we prove an invariance principle for such an $\alpha$-Discrete Gaussian Chain towards a $H(\alpha)$-fractional Gaussian process where the Hurst index $H$ satisfies $H=H(\alpha)=\frac {\alpha-2} 2$. This result goes beyond a conjecture by Fröhlich and Zegarlinski [FZ91] which conjectured fluctuations of order $n^{\tfrac 1 2 (\alpha-2) \wedge 1}$ for the Discrete Gaussian Chain.

Universality of the number variance in rotational invariant two-dimensional Coulomb gases

Abstract:An exact map was established by Lacroix-A-Chez-Toine, Majumdar, and Schehr in [44] between the $N$ complex eigenvalues of complex non-Hermitian random matrices from the Ginibre ensemble, and the positions of $N$ non-interacting Fermions in a rotating trap in the ground state. An important quantity is the statistics of the number of Fermions $\mathcal{N}_a$ in a disc of radius $a$. Extending the work [44] covering Gaussian and rotationally invariant potentials $Q$, we present a rigorous analysis in planar complex and symplectic ensembles, which both represent 2D Coulomb gases. We show that the variance of $\mathcal{N}_a$ is universal in the large-$N$ limit, when measured in units of the mean density proportional to $\Delta Q$, which itself is non-universal. This holds in the large-$N$ limit in the bulk and at the edge, when a finite fraction or almost all Fermions are inside the disc. In contrast, at the origin, when few eigenvalues are contained, it is the singularity of the potential that determines the universality class. We present three explicit examples from the Mittag-Leffler ensemble, products of Ginibre matrices, and truncated unitary random matrices. Our proofs exploit the integrable structure of the underlying determinantal respectively Pfaffian point processes and a simple representation of the variance in terms of truncated moments at finite-$N$.
