Abstract:Quantum discord is viewed as the measure of quantum correlation which can be nonzero even when entanglement in the system is zero. We study two properties of quantum discord: the upper bound and the continuity. We prove the upper bound of quantum discord in terms of the coherent information for any quantum state and discuss the condition for the reachable upper bound. If two states are close to each other, then we find that quantum discord has little change and provides a bound with respect to this small change.

Abstract:We discuss interfaces in spin glasses. We present new theoretical results and a numerical method to characterize overlap interfaces and the stability of the spin-glass phase in extended disordered systems. We use this definition to characterize the low temperature phase of hierarchical spin-glass models. We use the Replica Symmetry Breaking theory to evaluate the cost for an overlap interface, which in these models is particularly simple. A comparison of our results from numerical simulations with the theoretical predictions shows good agreement.

Abstract:We study effects of perturbation Hamiltonian to quantum spin systems which can include quenched disorder. Model-independent inequalities are derived, using an additional artificial disordered perturbation. These inequalities enable us to prove that the variance of the perturbation Hamiltonian density vanishes in the infinite volume limit even if the artificial perturbation is switched off. This theorem is applied to spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomena in a disordered classical spin model, a quantum spin model without disorder and a disordered quantum spin model.

In this work, we show how these criteria can be extended to non-binary valued spin systems.

Abstract:We develop a new method to compute the exact overlaps between integrable boundary states and on-shell Bethe states for integrable spin chains. Our method is based on the coordinate Bethe Ansatz and does not rely on the "rotation trick" of the corresponding lattice model. It leads to a rigorous proof of the factorized overlap formulas in a number of cases, some of which were inaccessible to earlier methods. As concrete examples, we consider the compact XXX and XXZ Heisenberg spin chains, and the non-compact $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ spin chain.

Quantum coordinate operators: why space-time lattice is fuzzy

Abstract:Working within the framework of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), we construct a set of three operators suitable for identifying coordinate-like quantities on a spin-network configuration. In doing so, we rely on known properties of operators for angles, which are already well-known in the LQG literature. These operators are defined on the kinematical Hilbert space, in a background-independent fashion. Computing their action on coherent states, we are able to study some relevant properties such us the spectra, which are discrete. In particular, we focus on the algebra generated by quantum coordinates and, remarkably, it turns out that they do not commute. Interestingly, this may provide additional hints on how space-time noncommutativity could be realized in the context of LQG. The semiclassical regime, necessary to make contact with coordinates on manifolds, is also explored and, specifically, is given by the large-spin limit in which commutativity can be restored. Finally, building on well-established results, we discuss how it is possible to have regularization.
Overlap Structure and Free Energy Fluctuations in Short-Range Spin Glasses

Abstract:We investigate scenarios in which the low-temperature phase of short-range spin glasses comprises thermodynamic states which are nontrivial mixtures of multiple incongruent pure state pairs. We construct a new kind of metastate supported on Gibbs states whose edge overlap values with a reference state fall within a specified range. Using this metastate we show that, in any dimension, the variance of free energy difference fluctuations between pure states within a single mixed Gibbs state with multiple edge overlap values diverges linearly with the volume. We discuss some implications of these results.

Abstract:In a statistical physics context, inverse problems consist in determining microscopic interactions such that a system reaches a predefined collective state. A complex collective state may be prescribed by specifying the overlap distribution between microscopic configurations, a notion originally introduced in the context of disordered systems like spin-glasses. We show that in spite of the absence of disorder, nonequilibrium spin models exhibiting spontaneous magnetization oscillations provide a benchmark to prescribe a non-trivial overlap distribution with continuous support, qualitatively analogous to the ones found in disordered systems with full replica symmetry breaking. The overlap distribution can be explicitly tailored to take a broad range of predefined shapes by monitoring the spin dynamics. The presence of a non-trivial overlap distribution is traced back to an average over infinitely many pure states, a feature shared with spin-glasses, although the structure of pure states is here much simpler.

Abstract:It is shown that the variance of a perturbation Hamiltonian density vanishes in the infinite-volume limit of the perturbed spin systems with quenched disorder. This is proven in a simpler way and under less assumptions than before. A corollary of this theorem indicates the impossibility of non-spontaneous replica symmetry-breaking in disordered spin systems. The commutativity between the infinite-volume limit and the switched-off limit of a replica symmetry-breaking perturbation implies that the variance of the spin overlap vanishes in the replica symmetric Gibbs state.

Abstract:I review the concept of a disorder operator, introduced originally by Kadanoff in the context of the two-dimensional Ising model. Disorder operators acquire an expectation value in the disordered phase of the classical spin system. This concept has had applications and implications to many areas of physics ranging from quantum spin chains to gauge theories to topological phases of matter. In this paper I describe the role that disorder operators play in our understanding of ordered, disordered and topological phases of matter. The role of disorder operators, and their generalizations, and their connection with dualities in different systems, as well as with majorana fermions and parafermions, is discussed in detail. Their role in recent fermion–boson and boson–boson dualities is briefly discussed.

Abstract:Using the SU(N) representation of the group theory, we derive the generalform of the spin swapping operator for the quantum Heisenberg spin-s systems.We further prove that such a spin swapping operator is equal to the spinsinglet pairing operator under the partial transposition. For SU(2) invariantstates, it is shown that the expectation value of the spin swapping operatorand its generalizations, the permutations, can be used as an entanglementwitness, especially, for the formulation of observable conditions ofentanglement.

Abstract:Disorder effects inevitably exist in realistic samples, manifesting in various physical properties. In this paper, we review the recent progress in understanding the disorder effects on quantum transport and quantum phase transition properties in low-dimensional superconducting and topological systems. As a consequence of the pronounced quantum fluctuation in low-dimensional systems, rare events drastically change the physical characteristics and underlying microscopic transport process in these systems, which are beyond the traditional paradigms. Associating with recent experimental observations, we emphasize the microscopic mechanism for disordered Ising superconductivity, the quantum Griffiths singularity of superconductor metal transition and the discrete scale invariance in topological materials.
From classical probability densities to quantum states: quantization of Gaussians for arbitrary orderings

Abstract:The primary focus of this work is to investigate how the most emblematic classical probability density, namely a Gaussian, can be mapped to a valid quantum states. To explore this issue, we consider a Gaussian whose squared variance depends on a parameter $\lambda$. Specifically, depending on the value of $\lambda$, we study what happens in the classical-quantum correspondence as we change the indeterminacy of the classical particle. Furthermore, finding a correspondence between a classical state and a quantum state is not a trivial task. Quantum observables, described by Hermitian operators, do not generally commute, so a precise ordering must be introduced to resolve this ambiguity. In this work, we study two different arbitrary orderings: the first is an arbitrary ordering of the position and momentum observables; the second, which is the main focus of the present work, is an arbitrary ordering of the annihilation and creation operators. In this latter case, we find the interesting result that even a $\delta$-function, which in general has no quantum correspondence, can be mapped into a valid quantum state for a particular ordering, specifically the antinormal one (all creation operators are to the right of all annihilation operators in the product). This means that the Gaussian probability density corresponds to a valid quantum state, regardless of how localized classical particles are in phase space.

Universal distributions of overlaps from unitary dynamics in generic quantum many-body systems

Abstract:We study the preparation of a quantum state using a circuit of depth $t$ from a factorized state of $N$ sites. We argue that in the appropriate scaling limit of large $t$ and $N$, the overlap between states evolved under generic many-body chaotic dynamics belongs to a family of universal distribution that generalizes the celebrated Porter-Thomas distribution. This is a consequence of a mapping in the space of replicas to a model of dilute domain walls. Our result provides a rare example in which analysis at an arbitrary number of replicas is possible, giving rise to the complete overlap distribution. Our general picture is derived and corroborated by the exact solution of the random phase model and of an emergent random matrix model given by the Ginibre ensemble. Finally, numerical simulations of two distinct random circuits show excellent agreement, thereby demonstrating universality.

The Wasserstein distance of order 1 for quantum spin systems on infinite lattices

Abstract:We propose a generalization of the Wasserstein distance of order 1 to quantum spin systems on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, which we call specific quantum $W_1$ distance. The proposal is based on the $W_1$ distance for qudits of [De Palma et al., IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 67, 6627 (2021)] and recovers Ornstein's $\bar{d}$-distance for the quantum states whose marginal states on any finite number of spins are diagonal in the canonical basis. We also propose a generalization of the Lipschitz constant to quantum interactions on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and prove that such quantum Lipschitz constant and the specific quantum $W_1$ distance are mutually dual. We prove a new continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy for a finite set of quantum spins in terms of the quantum $W_1$ distance, and we apply it to prove a continuity bound for the specific von Neumann entropy in terms of the specific quantum $W_1$ distance for quantum spin systems on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Finally, we prove that local quantum commuting interactions above a critical temperature satisfy a transportation-cost inequality, which implies the uniqueness of their Gibbs states.

Exact overlaps for all integrable two-site boundary states of $\mathfrak{gl}(N)$ symmetric spin chains

Abstract:We find closed formulas for the overlaps of Bethe eigenstates of $\mathfrak{gl}(N)$ symmetric spin chains and integrable boundary states. We derive the general overlap formulas for $\mathfrak{gl}(M)\oplus\mathfrak{gl}(N-M)$ symmetric boundary states and give a well-established conjecture for the $\mathfrak{sp}(N)$ symmetric case. Combining these results with the previously derived $\mathfrak{so}(N)$ symmetric formula, now we have the overlap functions for all integrable boundary states of the $\mathfrak{gl}(N)$ spin chains which are built from two-site states. The calculations are independent from the representations of the quantum space therefore our formulas can be applied for the $SO(6)$ and the alternating $SU(4)$ spin chains which describe the scalar sectors of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills and ABJM theories which are important application areas of our results.

Unusual area-law violation in random inhomogeneous systems

Abstract:The discovery of novel entanglement patterns in quantum many-body systems is a prominent research direction in contemporary physics. Here we provide the example of a spin chain with random and inhomogeneous couplings that in the ground state exhibits a very unusual area law violation. In the clean limit, i.e., without disorder, the model is the rainbow chain and has volume law entanglement. We show that, in the presence of disorder, the entanglement entropy exhibits a power-law growth with the subsystem size, with an exponent 1/2. By employing the Strong Disorder Renormalization Group (SDRG) framework, we show that this exponent is related to the survival probability of certain random walks. The ground state of the model exhibits extended regions of short-range singlets (that we term ``bubble'' regions) as well as rare long range singlet (``rainbow'' regions). Crucially, while the probability of extended rainbow regions decays exponentially with their size, that of the bubble regions is power law. We provide strong numerical evidence for the correctness of SDRG results by exploiting the free-fermion solution of the model. Finally, we investigate the role of interactions by considering the random inhomogeneous XXZ spin chain. Within the SDRG framework and in the strong inhomogeneous limit, we show that the above area-law violation takes place only at the free-fermion point of phase diagram. This point divides two extended regions, which exhibit volume-law and area-law entanglement, respectively.

Quantum concentration inequalities and equivalence of the thermodynamical ensembles: an optimal mass transport approach

Abstract:We prove new concentration inequalities for quantum spin systems which apply to any local observable measured on any product state or on any state with exponentially decaying correlations. Our results do not require the spins to be arranged in a regular lattice, and cover the case of observables that contain terms acting on spins at arbitrary distance. Moreover, we introduce a local W1 distance, which quantifies the distinguishability of two states with respect to local observables. We prove a transportation-cost inequality stating that the local W1 distance between a generic state and a state with exponentially decaying correlations is upper bounded by a function of their relative entropy. Finally, we apply such inequality to prove the equivalence between the canonical and microcanonical ensembles of quantum statistical mechanics and the weak eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for the Hamiltonians whose Gibbs states have exponentially decaying correlations.

Abstract:We study the disorder-induced quantum Hall-to-insulator transition in a lattice model with only off-diagonal disorder. The localization length of the system is calculated by using the finite-size scaling method combined with the transfer-matrix technique. By increasing the off-diagonal disorder strength we find that the extended states do not float up in energy, but move towards the direction of lower energy. As a consequence, a direct transition from a higher integer quantum Hall state to an insulator becomes possible, in agreement with previous studies based on a tight-binding model with only diagonal disorder.
