Abstract:Quantum coherence, like entanglement, is a fundamental resource in quantum information. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in formulating resource theory of coherence from a broader perspective. The notions of block-coherence and POVM-based coherence have been established. Certain challenges, however, remain to be addressed. It is difficult to define incoherent operations directly, without requiring incoherent states, which proves a major obstacle in establishing the resource theory of dynamical coherence. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by introducing an alternate definition of incoherent operations, induced via coherence measures, and quantify dynamical coherence based on this definition. Finally, we apply our proposed definition to quantify POVM-based dynamical coherence.

Abstract:Coherence measures and their operational interpretations lay the cornerstone of coherence theory. In this paper, we introduce a class of coherence measures with alpha affinity, say alpha affinity of coherence for alpha is an element of(0, 1). Furthermore, we obtain the analytic formulas for these coherence measures and study their corresponding convex roof extension. We provide an operational interpretation for 1/2 affinity of coherence by showing that it is equal to the error probability to discrimination a set of pure states with the least-square measurement. By employing this relationship we regain the optimal measurement for equiprobable quantum state discrimination. Moreover, we compare these coherence quantifiers and establish a complementarity relation between the 1/2 affinity of coherence and path distinguishability for some special cases.

Abstract:A fundamental task in any physical theory is to quantify a certain physical quantity in a meaningful way. In this paper, we show that both fidelity distance and affinity distance satisfy the strong contractibility, and the corresponding resource quantifiers can be used to characterize a large class of resource theories. Under two assumptions, namely, convexity of "free states" and closure of free states under "selective free operations," our general framework of resource theory includes quantum resource theories of entanglement, coherence, partial coherence, and superposition. In partial coherence theory, we show that fidelity of partial coherence of a bipartite state is equal to the minimal error probability of a mixed quantum state discrimination task and vice versa, which complements the main result in Xiong and Wu [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 51, 414005 (2018)]. We also compute the analytic expression of fidelity of partial coherence for (2, n) bipartite X states. At last, we study the correlated coherence in the framework of partial coherence theory. We show that partial coherence of a bipartite state, with respect to the eigenbasis of a subsystem, is actually a measure of discord-type quantum correlation.

Abstract:Both coherence and entanglement stem from the superposition principle, capture quantumness of a physical system, and play a central role in quantum physics. In a multipartite quantum system, coherence and quantum correlations are closely connected. In particular, it has been established that quantum coherence of a bipartite state is an important resource for its conversion to entanglement [A. Streltsov {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 115}, 020403 (2015)] and to quantum discord [J. Ma {\it et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 116}, 160407 (2016)]. We show here that there is a very close association between partial coherence introduced by Luo and Sun [S. Luo and Y. Sun, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 96}, 022136 (2017)] and quantum correlations (quantified by quantum discord) in both directions. Furthermore, we propose families of coherence measures in terms of quantum correlations and quantum Fisher information.
Quantum-Vacuum Effects And Quantum Coherence In Artificial Electromagnetic Materials

Abstract:Artificial electromagnetic materials can be utilized to manipulate light propagations, and have potential applications in designs of photonic and quantum optical devices. Multilevel quantum coherent media is one kind of such artificial electromagnetic materials. Some physically interesting effects due to the combination of quantum coherence and quantum vacuum, i.e., the tunable quantum coherent effects, in which the quantum-vacuum fluctuation field is involved, are suggested. Two topics are addressed: i) the spontaneous emission inhibition due to quantum interference in a three-level system; ii) the quantum light-induced potentials for coherent manipulation of atomic matter waves. The light-induced quantum guiding potentials could be utilized to cool and trap atoms, and may be used for the development of new techniques of atom fibers and atom chips, where the coherent manipulation of atomic matter waves is needed. In addition, the physical foundation of quantum coherence is analyzed and its counterparts in other fields are suggested. It is well known that the mechanism of atomic CPT (coherent population trapping) and EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) is the quantum destructive interference. However, there are some interesting analogues in field theory such as quark mixing mechanism that also exhibits such a phase coherence. We compare the quantum interferences of the atomic CPT with the quark mixing (and GIM mechanism) in the weak interaction. It is shown that the quantum destructive interference presented here is one of the common characteristics of many quantum coherent processes. The scheme presented here may have a potential significance in both pure and applied physics, e.g., providing us with a new insight into the physical essence of quantum coherence in various physical processes, and applying the quantum-vacuum effects to the development of new photonic devices.

Abstract:Coherence refers to correlations in waves. Because matter has a wave-particle nature, it is unsurprising that coherence has deep connections with the most contemporary issues in chemistry research (e.g., energy harvesting, femtosecond spectroscopy, molecular qubits and more). But what does the word "coherence" really mean in the context of molecules and other quantum systems? We provide a review of key concepts, definitions, and methodologies, surrounding coherence phenomena in chemistry, and we describe how the terms "coherence" and "quantum coherence" refer to many different phenomena in chemistry. Moreover, we show how these notions are related to the concept of an interference pattern. Coherence phenomena are indeed complex, and ambiguous definitions may spawn confusion. By describing the many definitions and contexts for coherence in the molecular sciences, we aim to enhance understanding and communication in this broad and active area of chemistry.

Abstract:The superposition principle of quantum mechanics states that any linear combination of two state vectors |0〉 and |1〉 represents an equally valid physical state of the quantum system: |ψ〉 = a|0〉+ b|1〉. For nonzero coefficients a and b, the state |ψ〉 will not be orthogonal to either |0〉 or |1〉, and |ψ〉 is traditionally said to be a coherent superposition of |0〉 and |1〉. Identifying coherence in this sense involves first stipulating a distinguished basis, {|0〉, |1〉, |2〉, · · · }, which is singled out by the unavoidable interaction with the environment, also known as decoherence [1]. An application of the superposition principle to many-body systems leads to quantum entanglement [2], a nonclassical type of correlation and an important resource for quantum technology. Recent results show that not all quantum technological tasks require the presence of entanglement, but can make use of other nonclassical features such as quantum discord [3] and even quantum coherence [4]. Motivated by this latter discovery, researchers have recently begun developing a resource theory of quantum coherence (see [4] for a review). This resource theory aims to rigorously quantify the amount of coherence in different quantum states and quantum processes, while further studying the use of coherence in quantum technologies, including quantum metrology, quantum computation, quantum random number generation, and quantum communication. From this resource-theoretic perspective, quantum coherence is characterized as some fungible property of quantum states that can be manipulated and exchanged from one system to the next. Abstract:A major signature of quantum mechanics beyond classical physics is coherence, the existence of superposition states. The recently developed resource theory of quantum coherence allows the formalization of incoherent operations—those operations which cannot create coherence. We identify the set of operations which additionally do not use coherence. These are such that coherence cannot be exploited by a classical observer, who measures incoherent properties of the system, to go beyond classical dynamics. We give a physical interpretation in terms of interferometry and prove a dilation theorem, showing how these operations can always be constructed by the system interacting, in an incoherent way, with an ancilla. Such a physical justification is not known for the incoherent operations; thus, our results lead to a physically well-motivated resource theory of coherence. Next, we investigate the implications for coherence in multipartite systems. We show that quantum correlations can be defined naturally with respect to a fixed basis, providing a link between coherence and quantum discord. We demonstrate the interplay between these two quantities in the operations that we study and suggest implications for the theory of quantum discord by relating these operations to those which cannot create discord.
Two novel pure-state coherence measures in quantifying coherence

Abstract:In the resource theory of coherence, the quantification of quantum-state coherence is an important task. In this regard, the key ingredients are the various coherence monotones (or measures). There are few coherence-monotone classes that solely depend on other coherence measures defined for all the pure states; in other words, they rely on the pure state coherence measures (PSCM). Here, we set forth two such novel PSCMs, and validate each of them through the fulfillment of all four necessary conditions. In addition, we delve into the most recent (as per our knowledge) coherence-monotone class based on the innovative idea of quantifying coherence in terms of pure-state coherence, further redefine it, and, through the study of convexity under mixing, justify why this coherence monotone class cannot be treated as a coherence-measure class in general.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamical properties of the two-boson quantum walk in systems with different degrees of coherence, and where the effect of the coherence on the two-boson quantum walk can be naturally introduced. A general analytical expression for the two-boson correlation function, for both pure states and mixed states, is given. We propose a possible two-photon quantum-walk scheme with a mixed initial state, and find that the two-photon correlation function and the average distance between two photons can be influenced by the initial photon distribution, the relative phase, or the degree of coherence. The propagation features of our numerical results can be explained by our analytical two-photon correlation function.

Abstract:Quantum coherence is a fundamental property of quantum systems, separating quantum from classical physics. Recently, there has been significant interest in the characterization of quantum coherence as a resource, investigating how coherence can be extracted and used for quantum technological applications. In this work, the progress of this research is reviewed, focusing in particular on recent experimental efforts. After a brief review of the underlying theory, the main platforms for realizing the experiments are discussed: linear optics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and superconducting systems. Experimental detection and quantification of coherence, experimental state conversion and coherence distillation, and experiments investigating the dynamics of quantum coherence are then considered. Experiments exploring the connections between coherence and uncertainty relations, path information, and coherence of operations and measurements are also reviewed. Experimental efforts on multipartite and multilevel coherence are also discussed.

Abstract:The concept of bock-coherence, first introduced in [1] and developed in [2,3] encompasses the case where experimental capabilities are not so delicate to perform arbitrary refined measurements on individual atoms. We develop a framework which facilitates further investigation of this resource theory in several respects. Using this framework, we investigate the problem of state conversion by incoherent operations and show that a majorization condition is the necessary and sufficient condition for state transformation by block-incoherent operations. We also determine the form of the maximally coherent state from which all other states and all unitary gates can be constructed by incoherent operations. Thereafter, we define the concept of block-cohering and block-decohering powers of quantum channels and determine these powers for several types of channels. Finally, we explore the relation between block coherence and a previous extension of coherence, known as $k$-coherence.

Abstract:Quantum coherence, present whenever a quantum system exists in a superposition of multiple classically distinct states, marks one of the fundamental departures from classical physics. Quantum coherence has recently been investigated rigorously within a resource-theoretic formalism. However, the finer-grained notion of multilevel coherence, which explicitly takes into account the number of superposed classical states, has remained relatively unexplored. A comprehensive analysis of multi-level coherence, which acts as the single-party analogue to multi-partite entanglement, is essential for understanding natural quantum processes as well as for gauging the performance of quantum technologies. Here we develop the theoretical and experimental groundwork for characterizing and quantifying multilevel coherence. We prove that non-trivial levels of purity are required for multilevel coherence, as there is a ball of states around the maximally mixed state that do not exhibit multilevel coherence in any basis. We provide a simple necessary and sufficient analytical criterion to verify multilevel coherence, which leads to a complete classification for three-level systems. We present the robustness of multilevel coherence, a bona fide quantifier which we show to be numerically computable via semidefinite programming and experimentally accessible via multilevel coherence witnesses. We further verify and lower-bound the robustness of multilevel coherence by performing a semi-device-independent phase discrimination task, implemented experimentally with four-level probes in a photonic setup. Our results contribute to understanding the operational relevance of genuine multilevel coherence, also by demonstrating the key role it plays in enhanced phase discrimination---a primitive for quantum communication and metrology---and suggest new ways to reliably test the quantum behaviour of physical systems.

Abstract:Quantum coherence is a fundamental manifestation of the quantum superposition principle. Recently, Baumgratz \emph{et al}. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{113}, 140401 (2014)] presented a rigorous framework to quantify coherence from the view of theory of physical resource. Here we propose a new valid quantum coherence measure which is a convex roof measure, for a quantum system of arbitrary dimension, essentially using the generalized Gell-Mann matrices. Rigorous proof shows that the proposed coherence measure fulfills all the requirements dictated by the resource theory of quantum coherence measures. Moreover, strong links between the resource frameworks of coherence concurrence and entanglement concurrence is derived, which shows that any degree of coherence with respect to some reference basis can be converted to entanglement via incoherent operations. Our work provides a clear quantitative and operational connection between coherence and entanglement based on two kinds of concurrence. This new coherence measure, coherence concurrence, may be beneficial to the study of quantum coherence.

Abstract:The resource theory of coherence studies the operational value of superpositions in quantum technologies. A key question in this theory concerns the efficiency of manipulation and interconversion of the resource. Here, we solve this question completely for qubit states by determining the optimal probabilities for mixed-state conversions via stochastic incoherent operations. Extending the discussion to distributed scenarios, we introduce and address the task of assisted incoherent state conversion, where the process is enhanced by making use of correlations with a second party. Building on these results, we demonstrate experimentally that the optimal state-conversion probabilities can be achieved in a linear optics setup. This paves the way towards real world applications of coherence transformations in current quantum technologies.

Abstract:In the quantitative theory of quantum coherence, the amount of coherence for given states can be meaningfully discussed only when referring to a preferred basis. One of the objections to this quantification is that the amount of coherence is an intrinsically basis-dependent quantity. This limitation can, however, be lifted when considering a set of quantum states invariant under arbitrary unitary transformations. Thus, we analyze a basis-independent definition of quantum coherence, and the incoherent state is taken as the maximally mixed state. We describe the relationship between the basis-independent and the basis-dependent approaches and give several applications to show the advantages of the former method. The relations among basis-independent coherence, quantum entanglement, and quantum discord are discussed by using the relative entropy within a multipartite system.
