Abstract:We study (anti-) instantons in super Yang-Mills theories defined on a non anticommutative superspace. The instanton solution that we consider is the same as in ordinary SU(2) N=1 super Yang-Mills, but the anti-instanton receives corrections to the U(1) part of the connection which depend quadratically on fermionic coordinates, and linearly on the deformation parameter C. By substituting the exact solution into the classical Lagrangian the topological charge density receives a new contribution which is quadratic in C and quartic in the fermionic zero-modes. The topological charge turns out to be zero. We perform an expansion around the exact classical solution in presence of a fermionic background and calculate the full superdeterminant contributing to the one-loop partition function. We find that the one-loop partition function is not modified with respect to the usual N=1 super Yang-Mills.

Abstract:We formulate N=2 twisted super Yang-Mills theory with a gauged central charge by superconnection formalism in two dimensions. We obtain off-shell invariant supermultiplets and actions with and without constraints, which is in contrast with the off-shell invariant D=N=4 super Yang-Mills formulation with unavoidable constraints.

Abstract:We present a compendium of results for ADHM multi-instantons in SU(N) SUSY gauge theories, followed by applications to N=2 supersymmetric models. Extending recent SU(2) work, and treating the N=1 and N=2 cases in parallel, we construct: (i) the ADHM supermultiplet, (ii) the multi-instanton action, and (iii) the collective coordinate integration measure. Specializing to N=2, we then give a closed formula for F_k, the k-instanton contribution to the prepotential, as a finite-dimensional collective coordinate integral. This amounts to a weak-coupling solution, in quadratures, of the low-energy dynamics of N=2 SQCD, without appeal to duality. As an application, we calculate F_1 for all SU(N) and any number of flavors N_F; for N_F<2N-2 and N_F=2N-1 we confirm previous instanton calculations and agree with the proposed hyper-elliptic curve solutions. For N_F=2N-2 and N_F=2N with N>3 we obtain new results, which in the latter case we do not understand how to reconcile with the curves.

Abstract:We construct the exact solution of one (anti-)instanton in $\mathcal{N}=\frac{1}{2}$ super Yang-Mills theory defined on non(anti-)commutative superspace. We first identify $\mathcal{N}=\frac{1}{2}$ superconformal invariance as maximal spacetime symmetry. For the gauge group U(2), the SU(2) part of the solution is given by the standard (anti-)instanton, but the U(1) field strength also turns out to be nonzero. The solution is SO(4) rotationally symmetric. For the gauge group $\mathrm{U}(N),$ in contrast with the U(2) case, we show that the entire $\mathrm{U}(N)$ part of the solution is deformed by non(anti-)commutativity and fermion zero modes. The solution is no longer rotationally symmetric; it is polarized into an axially symmetric configuration because of the underlying non(anti-)commutativity. We compute the ``information metric'' of one (anti-)instanton. We find that the moduli space geometry is deformed from the hyperbolic space ${H}_{5}$ (Euclidean anti--de Sitter space) in a way anticipated from reduced spacetime symmetry. Remarkably, the volume measure of the moduli space turns out to be independent of the non(anti-)commutativity. Implications for D branes in the Ramond-Ramond flux background and the gauge-gravity correspondence are discussed.

Abstract:We obtain the instanton correction recursion relations for the low energy effective prepotential in pure N = 2 SU(n) supersymmetric Yang-Mills gauge theory from Whitham hierarchy and Seiberg-Witten/Whitham equations. These formulae provide us a powerful tool to calculate arbitrary order instanton corrections coefficients from the pert urbative contributions of the effective prepotential in Seiberg-Witten gauge theory. We apply this idea to evaluate one- and two order instanton corrections coefficients explicitly in SU(n) case in detail through the dynamical scale parameter expressed in terms of Riemann's theta-function.

Abstract:In this paper, we study instanton corrections in the N=2* gauge theory by using its description in string theory as a freely-acting orbifold. The latter is used to compute, using the worldsheet, the deformation of the Yang-Mills action. In addition, we calculate the deformed instanton partition function, thus extending the results to the non-perturbative sector of the gauge theory. As we point out, the structure of the deformation is extremely similar to the Omega-deformation, therefore confirming the universality of the construction. Finally, we comment on the realisation of the mass deformation using physical vertex operators by exploiting the equivalence between Scherk-Schwarz deformations and freely-acting orbifolds.

Instantons and the Large N=4 Algebra

Abstract:We investigate the differential geometry of the moduli space of instantons on S^3 x S^1. Extending previous results, we show that a sigma-model with this target space can be expected to possess a large N=4 superconformal symmetry, supporting speculations that this sigma-model may be dual to Type IIB superstring theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1. The sigma-model is parametrized by three integers -- the rank of the gauge group, the instanton number, and a "level" (the integer coefficient of a topologically nontrivial B-field, analogous to a WZW level). These integers are expected to correspond to two five-brane charges and a one-brane charge. The sigma-model is weakly coupled when the level, conjecturally corresponding to one of the five-brane changes, becomes very large, keeping the other parameters fixed. The central charges of the large N=4 algebra agree, at least semiclassically, with expectations from the duality.

Abstract:We investigate the general conditions for an all-orders finite theory by redefining the coupling constants such that both the gauge-coupling $\ensuremath{\beta}$ function and the anomalous dimensions of the gauge superfield and chiral superfields vanish. These explicit expressions for the conditions of all-orders finiteness involve solutions of an infinite number of equations. Both a solving process and a criterion for the existence of the solutions of the equations are given.
Refined instanton analysis of the 2D $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model: mass gap, theta dependence, and mirror symmetry

Abstract:We address nonperturbative dynamics of the two-dimensional bosonic and supersymmetric $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ models for general $N$ by developing new tools directly on $\mathbb{R}^2$. The analysis starts with a new formulation of instantons that is consistent with the existence of the classical moduli space, classical dipole--dipole type interactions of instanton--anti-instanton pairs, and vanishing interaction of instanton--instanton pairs. The classical consistency is achieved via a representation of the instanton as a collection of $N$ pointlike constituents carrying pair of real and imaginary charges valued in the weight lattice of $SU(N)$. The constituents interact via a generalized Coulomb interaction and do not violate the fact that instanton is a single lump with integer topological charge. By developing the appropriate Gibbs distribution, we show that the vacuum can be captured by a statistical field theory of these constituents, and their cluster expansion. Contrary to the common belief that instantons do not capture the vacuum structure and non-perturbation properties of such theories, our refined analysis is able to produce properties such as mass gap, theta dependence, and confinement of the theory on $\mathbb{R}^2$. In supersymmetric theory, our construction gives a new derivation of the mirror symmetry between the sigma model and the dual Landau--Ginzburg model by Hori and Vafa. Our construction also demonstrates that there is absolutely no conflict between large $N$ and instantons.

Abstract:We calculate circular Wilson loop expectation value of pure ${\cal N}=1$ super Yang-Mills from the Klebanov-Strassker-Tseytlin solution of supergravity and the proposed gauge/gravity duality. The calculation is performed numerically via searching world-sheet minimal surface. It is shown that Wilson loop exhibits area law for large radius which implies that ${\cal N}=1$ super Yang-Mills is confined at large distance or low energy scale. Meanwhile, Wilson loop exhibits logarithmic behavior for small radius and it indicates asymptotical freedom of ${\cal N}=1$ super Yang-Mills at short distance or high energy scale.

Abstract:We study $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories on the product of a twosphere and a cylinder. We show that the low-energy dynamics of a BPS sector of such a theory is described by a quantum integrable system, with the Planck constant set by the inverse of the radius of the sphere. If the sphere is replaced with a hemisphere, then our system reduces to an integrable system of the type studied by Nekrasov and Shatashvili. In this case we establish a correspondence between the effective prepotential of the gauge theory and the Yang-Yang function of the integrable system.

Abstract:We present and discuss BPS instanton solutions that appear in type II string theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds. From an effective action point of view these arise as finite action solutions of the Euclidean equations of motion in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity coupled to tensor multiplets. As a solution generating technique we make use of the c-map, which produces instanton solutions from either Euclidean black holes or from Taub-NUT like geometries.

Abstract:We show that the moduli space of the (2,0) and little-string theories compactified on T3 with R-symmetry twists is equal to the moduli space of U(1) instantons on a non-commutative T4. The moduli space of U(q) instantons on a non-commutative T4 is obtained from little-string theories of NS5-branes at Aq−1 singularities with twists. A large class of gauge theories with N=4 SUSY in 2+1D and N=2 SUSY in 3+1D are limiting cases of these theories. Hence, the moduli spaces of these gauge theories can be read off from the moduli spaces of instantons on non-commutative tori. We study the phase transitions in these theories and the action of T-duality. On the purely mathematical side, we give a prediction for the moduli space of two U(1) instantons on a non-commutative T4.
Confinement for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ with a Symmetric tensor

Abstract:In this paper we study 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ confining gauge theories with a matter field in the rank-two index symmetric representation. The models found here are obtained from the application of the duplication formula for hyperbolic gamma functions from \emph{parent} confining models, with antisymmetric fields and (anti)-fundamental matter by \emph{freezing} some of the mass parameters for the latter. We find a series of identities that can give rise to candidate confining theories with $SU(N)$ gauge group, a symmetric tensor and in addition other charged matter fields, in general with a non-vanishing superpotential. We provide for each case further checks of the proposed dualities, by studying the Coulomb branch and by deconfining the tensorial matter by using other known 3d dualities. From the final picture a refined classification emerges, distinguishing the confining theories obtained in the paper in classes with common properties.

Abstract:We construct analytical self-dual Yang-Mills fractional instanton solutions on a four-torus $\mathbb{T}^4$ with 't Hooft twisted boundary conditions. These instantons possess topological charge $Q=\frac{r}{N}$, where $1\leq r< N$. To implement the twist, we employ $SU(N)$ transition functions that satisfy periodicity conditions up to center elements and are embedded into $SU(k)\times SU(\ell)\times U(1)\subset SU(N)$, where $\ell+k=N$. The self-duality requirement imposes a condition, $k L_1L_2=r\ell L_3L_4$, on the lengths of the periods of $\mathbb{T}^4$ and yields solutions with abelian field strengths. However, by introducing a detuning parameter $\Delta\equiv (r\ell L_3L_4-k L_1 L_2)/\sqrt{L_1 L_2L_3L_4}$, we generate self-dual nonabelian solutions on a general $\mathbb{T}^4$ as an expansion in powers of $\Delta$. We explore the moduli spaces associated with these solutions and find that they exhibit intricate structures. Solutions with topological charges greater than $\frac{1}{N}$ and $k\neq r $ possess non-compact moduli spaces, along which the $O(\Delta)$ gauge-invariant densities exhibit runaway behavior. On the other hand, solutions with $Q=\frac{r}{N}$ and $k=r$ have compact moduli spaces, whose coordinates correspond to the allowed holonomies in the $SU(r)$ color space. These solutions can be represented as a sum over $r$ lumps centered around the $r$ distinct holonomies, thus resembling a liquid of instantons. In addition, we show that each lump supports $2$ adjoint fermion zero modes.

Abstract:We present a non-geometric derivation of $\mathcal{N}$=1 Super Yang-Mills by focusing on the consistency of interactions that extend the free vector supermultiplet rather than assuming gauge invariance under extended symmetries. By utilizing a superspace first-order description, the theory is given in closed form as a third-order polynomial which includes a single cubic interaction term instead of an infinite series, thus eliminating the need for a special gauge. The geometrical interpretation of the theory emerges, as opposed to being presupposed.
