Abstract:We develop a general stability analysis for objective structures, which constitute a far reaching generalization of crystal lattice systems. We show that these particle systems, although in general neither periodic nor space filling, allow for the identification of stability constants in terms of representations of the underlying symmetry group and interaction potentials. From our representation results a general computational algorithm to test objective structures for their stability is derived. By way of example we show that our method can be applied to verify the stability of carbon nanotubes with chirality.

Abstract:We have analyzed the crystal structures of 7551 binary intermetallic compounds, which are deposited in the inorganic crystal structure database, using a combined geometrical-topological approach as implemented in our program package ToposPro. We represented each crystal structure with two models: (i) the topological model of periodic atomic net and (ii) the geometrical model of the Voronoi partition of crystal space. Within the former model, we have classified all intermetallics into 949 topological types, 20 of which cover 57% of the whole sample. Using our recently developed topological network model of reconstructive solid-state transformations, we have described possible mechanisms of displacive transitions between the most abundant topological types and revealed a key role of the body-centered lattice in these transitions. The Voronoi partition model enabled us to introduce the concept of uniformity of the overall structure and the environment of separate atoms; the uniformity is estimated by the second moment of inertia of atomic Voronoi polyhedra. We have shown that the structures with a low uniformity value either contain mistakes in the crystallographic data or have significantly directed interatomic bonds. The proposed uniformity criteria can serve for the estimation of the robustness of an intermetallic structure.
Metric-driven search for structurally stable inorganic compounds

Abstract:We report a facile `metric' for the identification of structurally and dynamically (positive definite phonon structure) stable inorganic compounds. The metric considers charge-imbalance within the local substructures in crystalline compounds calculated using first-principles density-functional theory. To exemplify, we chose carbon-based nitrides as it provides a large pool of structurally stable and unstable phases. We showcase how local structural information related to Wyckoff symmetry uniquely identifies four new carbon-nitride phases. The metric predicts three new structurally stable phases of 4 (C):3 (N) stoichiometry, i.e., C4N3, which is further confirmed by direct phonon calculations. The structurally stable phases also satisfy the thermodynamic stability and mechanical stability criteria. New phases possess extraordinary mechanical properties, similar to diamond, and show insulating bandgap ranging from optimal, 1.45 eV (optimal) to 5.5 eV (large gap). The structural, electronic, and optical properties of <math>Pm(1)−C4N3</math>, discussed in detail, indicate possible application in optoelectronic and photovoltaic technologies. The way metric is designed, it can be used to predict stability of any material with three-dimensional bonding network. The metric was also able to predict structural stability of other nitride polymorphs with 100% accuracy. We believe that the proposed 'Metric' will accelerate the search of unknown and unexplored inorganic compounds by quick filtering of dynamically stable phases without expensive density-functional theory calculations.

On the Criteria of Formation and Lattice Distortion of Perovskite-Type Complex Halides

Abstract:The famous Goldschmidt's tolerance factor t=(RA+RX)/2(RB+RX) gives us a necessary but not sufficient condition for the formation of perovskite-type compounds (ABX3). In this work, computerized data analysis has been used to find some complementary criteria for the formation and lattice distortion of perovskite-type complex halides. It has been found that the radius ratio (RA/RX) and (RB/RX), affecting the stability of BX6 octahedra and AX12 cubo-octahedra (they are basic units of perovskite structure), are also dominating factors for the formation and lattice distortion of perovskite-type compounds. Besides, it has been found that the transition between the perovskite structure (with corner-sharing BX6 octahedra) to BaNiO3 structure (with face-sharing BX6 octahedra) can be predicted by a criterion based on the relative magnitude of ionic radii and electronegativity. Based on multivariate data analysis, several complementary criteria for the formation and lattice distortion of perovskite-type complex halides have been obtained, and some empirical equations expressing the relationships between the ionic radii (RA,RB,RX) and the lattice constants of perovskite-type complex halides have been found. The physical meaning of these empirical relationships has been discussed based on Pauling's rules of the crystal lattice stability of complex ionic compounds.
Stability of Two-Dimensional Ionic Clusters at Solid–Liquid Interfaces

Abstract:The stability of two-dimensional clusters (2DCs) at the interface between ionic crystals and their solutions was investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. We found that 2DCs show a remarkable feature of odd–even alternation in stability. In NaCl and NaBr systems, the clusters containing an odd number of ions are more stable than those with an even number of ions, while in KCl systems, it is the other way round. Accordingly, the stability of water molecules in the first hydration shell of 2DCs also shows an odd–even alternation, which is consistent with the associated 2DCs. The odd–even alternation is discussed based on a competition mechanism between two factors: the Coulomb repulsion in charged 2DCs and the interaction between charges and water dipoles. First-principles stability ranking of molecular crystal polymorphs with the DFT+MBD approach

Abstract:The ability to accurately calculate the relative stabilities of numerous polymorphs of a given molecular crystal is crucial for the success of any molecular crystal structure prediction (CSP) approach. We have recently presented a hierarchical CSP procedure based on van-der-Waals-inclusive density functional theory [Hoja et al., 2018, arXiv:1803.07503], which yields excellent stability rankings for molecular crystals involving rigid molecules, salts, co-crystals, and highly polymorphic drug-like molecules. This approach includes many-body dispersion effects, exact exchange, as well as vibrational free energies. Here, we discuss in detail the impact of these effects on the obtained stability rankings. In addition, we assess the impact of the approximations used in our hierarchical procedure. We show that our procedure is generally robust to 1-2 kJ mol-1 for the systems in the latest CSP blind test but vibrational free energies for crystals involving flexible molecules would benefit from directly including many-body dispersion interactions. In addition, we also discuss the effect of temperature on the structure of molecular crystals and a simple but effective method for estimating anharmonic effects.

Abstract:An empirical method is proposed to judge ordering or disordering in the crystal structure of the (A′A″) (B′B″) O3-type perovskite compound through a simple calculation only using the atomic parameters of the A′ and A″ atom and the ionic parameters of the B′ and B″ cation. The method has been used to judge ordering or disordering in the crystal structure of 56 (A′A″) (B′B″) O3-type perovskite compounds. Most judgements for the ordered or disordered structures of these complex perovskite compounds are in agreement with the experimental results and there are only five exceptional compounds (about 9% of the 56 compounds) to this judgement method. This empirical method will be valid for the various complex perovskite compounds with an ordering or disordering structure.
General stability analysis of the steady states in the continuous mixed-suspension crystallizer

Abstract:We report new mathematical tools to analyze the continuous mixed suspension crystallizer, which is widely used across industries, as it enables the manufacture of crystalline materials under well-controlled conditions. In particular, we develop a general framework to assess the stability of its steady states based on the birth rate ν , which denotes how many secondary nuclei a crystal forms throughout its lifetime in the crystallizer. A stable steady state is defined as follows: (i) ν(css)=1 , the birth rate at the steady state concentration must equal one. (ii) dν/dc>0 , the derivative of the birth rate must be positive. (iii) c0>css , the steady state must maintain a positive suspension density. These conditions enable the steady state analysis under general conditions, i.e., for arbitrary rate expressions of crystal growth and secondary nucleation, for size-dependent crystal growth and withdrawal, and for growth rate dispersion. The application of this theory to compounds with multiple solid forms, i.e., polymorphic and chiral compounds, is of particular interest. The analysis of the polymorphic steady states agrees with and generalizes the existing approaches. Concerning chiral compounds, enantiopure steady states are found to be unstable with respect to the racemic steady state, hence explaining the experimental challenges in the enantiopure crystallization of chiral compounds.

Abstract:Colloidal crystal method is one of the simplest approaches to fabricate photonic crystals. Recently little research work was reported on the theories of the colloidal crystal technology and the structures of binary colloidal crystal. In this report, the thermodynamic stability of binary colloidal crystal was analyzed based on the interaction between two colloid beads. A model on the formation of AB2 binary colloidal crystals was proposed and discussed, in reference to the theories about the stability of the colloid. It was shown that the AB2 structure was stable under the condition of the experiment, which agreed with the space-filling principle. The relationship between the stability of AB2 structure and the size ratio of the beads was discussed, and some primary results were obtained.
Predicting stable crystalline compounds using chemical similarity

Abstract:Abstract We propose an efficient high-throughput scheme for the discovery of stable crystalline phases. Our approach is based on the transmutation of known compounds, through the substitution of atoms in the crystal structure with chemically similar ones. The concept of similarity is defined quantitatively using a measure of chemical replaceability, extracted by data-mining experimental databases. In this way we build 189,981 possible crystal phases, including 18,479 that are on the convex hull of stability. The resulting success rate of 9.72% is at least one order of magnitude better than the usual success rate of systematic high-throughput calculations for a specific family of materials, and comparable with speed-up factors of machine learning filtering procedures. As a characterization of the set of 18,479 stable compounds, we calculate their electronic band gaps, magnetic moments, and hardness. Our approach, that can be used as a filter on top of any high-throughput scheme, enables us to efficiently extract stable compounds from tremendously large initial sets, without any initial assumption on their crystal structures or chemical compositions.

Abstract:Three types of ordered domains, i.e., 1/2<111>, 1/2<110>, and 1/2<100> superlattice structures, are observed, and the experimental results show that the 1/2<111>-type ordered structure is much more stable than the other two. The eight-point cluster variation method is established firstly and then the second and third neighbour interactions are taken into account. Based on the method, the phase diagrams as a function of reduced temperature (kT/J) and composition (x) are obtained and the stabilities of various ordered structures are analyzed. Theoretical results well explain the experimental observations.

Abstract:Predicting the stability of the perovskite structure remains a longstanding challenge for the discovery of new functional materials for many applications including photovoltaics and electrocatalysts. We developed an accurate, physically interpretable, and one-dimensional tolerance factor, {\tau}, that correctly predicts 92% of compounds as perovskite or nonperovskite for an experimental dataset of 576 $ABX_3$ materials ($\textit{X} =$ $O^{2-}$, $F^-$, $Cl^-$, $Br^-$, $I^-$) using a novel data analytics approach based on SISSO (sure independence screening and sparsifying operator). {\tau} is shown to generalize outside the training set for 1,034 experimentally realized single and double perovskites (91% accuracy) and is applied to identify 23,314 new double perovskites ($A_2$$\textit{BB'}$$X_6$) ranked by their probability of being stable as perovskite. This work guides experimentalists and theorists towards which perovskites are most likely to be successfully synthesized and demonstrates an approach to descriptor identification that can be extended to arbitrary applications beyond perovskite stability predictions.

Electrostatic Control of Electronic Structure in Modular Inorganic Crystals

Abstract:The rules that govern structure and bonding, established for elemental solids and simple compounds, are challenging to apply to more complex crystals formed of polyatomic building blocks such as layered or framework materials. Whether these modular building blocks are electrically neutral or charged influences the physical properties of the resulting crystal. Despite the prevalence of alternating charged units, their effects on the electronic structure remains unclear. We demonstrate how the distribution of charged building blocks, driven by differences in electrostatic potential, governs the electronic band energies formed in layered crystals. This coarse-grained model predicts the spatially separated valence and conduction band edges observed in the metal-oxyhalide Ba2Bi3Nb2O11Cl and explains observed property trends in the Sillén–Aurivillius crystal system. Moreover, the general nature of the model allows for extension to other modular structure types, illustrated for Sillén and Ruddesden-Popper compounds, and can support the rational design of electronic properties in diverse materials.

Structural Stability and Homogeneity of the Nonequilibrium Co–Ag Alloys

Abstract:A realistic n-body potential is derived for the equilibrium immiscible Co-Ag system through fitting its cross potential to some physical properties obtained from ab initio calculations for a few possible nonequilibrium Co-Ag alloys. Based on the derived Co-Ag potential, molecular dynamics simulations reveal that a Co-/Ag-based solid solution can retain its atomic homogeneity up to a critical atomic ratio of 9/12 at.% of Ag/Co, over which the solute atoms begin to segregate and that when the solute atoms exceed 12/18 at.% of Ag/Co, the solid solution becomes unstable and transforms into an amorphous alloy featuring also an inhomogeneous atomic structure, thus predicting a glass-forming range to be within 12-82 at.% of Ag. Moreover, a formation energy diagram is constructed to compare the energetic states of the possible nonequilibrium Co-Ag alloys. For the homogeneous Co-/Ag-based solid solution, a cage-like configuration is proposed to have one solvent atom isotropically surrounded by three nearest shells of solute atoms, and interestingly, the atomic ratio of the proposed configuration is very close to the critical composition of segregation determined by simulations.

Abstract:The fundamental principles underlying the arrangement of elements into solid compounds with an enormous variety of crystal structures are still largely unknown. This study presents a general overview of the structure types appearing in an important subset of the solid compounds, i.e., binary and ternary compounds of the 6A column oxides, sulfides and selenides. It contains an analysis of these compounds, including the prevalence of various structure types, their symmetry properties, compositions, stoichiometries and unit cell sizes. It is found that these compound families include preferred stoichiometries and structure types that may reflect both their specific chemistry and research bias in the available empirical data. Identification of non-overlapping gaps and missing stoichiometries in these structure populations may be used as guidance in the search for new materials.

Abstract:The physicochemical properties of molecular crystals, such as solubility, stability, compactability, melting behaviour and bioavailability, depend on their crystal form 1 . In silico crystal form selection has recently come much closer to realization because of the development of accurate and affordable free-energy calculations 2,3,4 . Here we redefine the state of the art, primarily by improving the accuracy of free-energy calculations, constructing a reliable experimental benchmark for solid–solid free-energy differences, quantifying statistical errors for the computed free energies and placing both hydrate crystal structures of different stoichiometries and anhydrate crystal structures on the same energy landscape, with defined error bars, as a function of temperature and relative humidity. The calculated free energies have standard errors of 1–2 kJ mol −1 for industrially relevant compounds, and the method to place crystal structures with different hydrate stoichiometries on the same energy landscape can be extended to other multi-component systems, including solvates. These contributions reduce the gap between the needs of the experimentalist and the capabilities of modern computational tools, transforming crystal structure prediction into a more reliable and actionable procedure that can be used in combination with experimental evidence to direct crystal form selection and establish control 5 .

Abstract:It is still largely unknown why intermetallic phases show such a large variety of crystal structures, with unit cell sizes varying between 1 and more than 20 000 atoms. The goal of our study was, therefore, to get a general overview of the symmetries, unit cell sizes, stoichiometries, most frequent structure types, and their stability fields based on the Mendeleev numbers as ordering parameters. A total of 20829 structures crystallizing in 2166 structure types have been studied for this purpose. Thereby, the focus was on a subset of 6441 binary intermetallic compounds, which crystallize in 943 structure types.

A complete description of thermodynamic stabilities of molecular crystals

Abstract:Predictions of relative stabilities of (competing) molecular crystals are of great technological relevance, most notably for the pharmaceutical industry. However, they present a long-standing challenge for modeling, as often minuscule free energy differences are sensitively affected by the description of electronic structure, the statistical mechanics of the nuclei and the cell, and thermal expansion. The importance of these effects has been individually established, but rigorous free energy calculations for general molecular compounds, which simultaneously account for all effects,have hitherto not been computationally viable. Here we present an efficient "end to end" frame-work that seamlessly combines state-of-the art electronic structure calculations, machine-learning potentials, and advanced free energy methods to calculate ab initio Gibbs free energies for general organic molecular materials. The facile generation of machine-learning potentials for a diverse set of polymorphic compounds, benzene, glycine, and succinic acid, and predictions of thermodynamic stabilities in qualitative and quantitative agreement with experiments highlights that predictive thermodynamic studies of industrially-relevant molecular materials are no longer a daunting task.

Abstract:Crystal structure prediction is demanding in two senses: this is a difficult problem, both experimentally and computationally, yet we want to find new materials with new properties that take unknown crystal structures. Using statistical information on the local environment of already reported stable crystal structures would be helpful when, for instance, finding new crystal structures through visually adding atoms sequentially to a cluster of atoms, which is an intuitive procedure that does not require substantial computational resources. This study conducted hierarchical classification of frequently appearing structure types in the ICSD database by comparing the occurrence ratios of H, B, C, N, O, F, and transition metals (TM) in binary, ternary, and quaternary crystals. The bond angle and solid angle distributions of Delaunay polyhedra with atoms as vertices were considered as descriptors of the local environment for each structure type. Hierarchical clustering of structure types based on bond angle or solid angle distributions revealed that the structure types can be broadly categorized into those favoring TM oxides, having low TM occurrence, and having high TM occurrence. Our results indicate that the anion, or lack of, plays a key role in determining the crystal structure type, and structure types strongly preferred by TM oxides can accommodate a broad range of angles.GRAPHICAL
