Abstract:A significant improvement in reversible de/rehydrogenation properties of MgH2 doped with 2.5 wt % LiAlH4 and 2.5 wt % LiBH4 additives is achieved by reactive ball milling. Careful comparison studies show that a small amount (total mass ratio of <= 5 wt %) of LiBH4 and/or LiAlH4 can improve the hydrogen desorption performance of MgH2 in terms of reducing hydrogen desorption temperature, enhancing hydrogen desorption kinetics, and increasing hydrogen capacity. In particular, the MgH2 co-doped with LiAlH4-LiBH4 exhibits the best dehydrogenation properties, which starts to release hydrogen at about 280 degrees C and releases a high hydrogen capacity of 7.62 wt % with superior reaction kinetics. The activation energy of hydrogen desorption is decreased from 187.8 kJ/mol (ball-milled MgH2) to 155.8 kJ/mol. It can also uptake 7.7 wt % H-2 within 15 min at 300 degrees C with a stable hydrogen absorption kinetics in the first 10 cycles. This synergistic effect of LiBH4 and LiAlH4 additives on improved hydrogen absorption/desorption properties is attributed to the in situ formation of Li3Mg7, Mg17Al12, and MgAlB4 new phases acting as the "catalytic active sites" to facilitate the diffusion of hydrogen through the reaction barriers in the de/hydrogenation cycles of MgH2. Moreover, these new phases can be rehydrogenated into MgH2, LiBH4, and Li3AlH6 hydrides, which further enhance the hydrogen capacity of co-doped sample more than the theoretical capacity of primitive MgH2.

Abstract:LiBH4 is one of the most potential candidates for hydrogen storage materials among several sorts of complex borohydrides. Utilizing reactive hydride composites on LiBH4 could destabilize the thermodynamics and improve dehydrogenation behaviors, such as the excellent reversibility of LiBH4-MgH2 and the fast dehydrogenation of LiBH4-Al. The strategy of combining both outstanding effects of MgH2 and AI to form LiBH4-MgH2-Al system has been proposed. However, reduction of hydrogen capacity during cycles has not been solved for the LiBH4-MgH2-Al system, which is considered as the principal problem. In this work, we investigated the reversible hydrogen storage performance and reaction mechanism of LiBH4-MgH2-Al doped with/without NbF5 additive. It can be found that the dehydrogenation of 4LiBH(4)-MgH2-Al can release about 9.0 wt % H-2 quickly without incubation period, compared with 2LiBH(4)-MgH2. Moreover, it is the first time to achieve completely reversible hydrogen desorption property of LiBH4-MgH2-Al by doping with NbF5 and dehydrogenating under hydrogen back pressure in experiment. Microstructure analysis shows that the formation of Mg-Al alloys could result in the formation of Li2B12H12 and subsequently lead to the capacity degradation. With the additive NbF5, it shows a totally different pathway and a significant inhibition effect on the alloying between Mg and Al, leading to an improved de/rehydrogenation behavior without the byproduct Li2B12H12. Meanwhile, NbF5 could be hydrogenated into NbH2 and react with element B to form NbB2, promoting the reaction between Mg/Al metals and B element to form MgAlB4. On the other hand, those niobium compounds could facilitate the products MgAlB4 and LiH to be fully rehydrogenated into LiBH4, MgH2, and Al, which contributes to the complete reversibility of LiBH4-MgH2-Al. A better understanding of the capacity fade mechanism of LiBH4-MgH2-Al system and the effects of additives might promote further development of high-capacity hydrogen storage materials.
Improved hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4 by AlH3 addition

Abstract:Lithium borohydride (LiBH4) possesses a very high hydrogen capacity (18.5 wt%) but suffers from high thermal stability. In this work, the as-prepared aluminium hydride (AlH3) was ball milled with LiBH4 forming 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite to improve the hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4. Hydrogen desorption measurements showed that a hydrogen capacity of 11.2 wt% is obtained from the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite and the desorption temperature of LiBH4 with AlH3 addition is reduced by more than 30 °C. AlH3 is better as an Al source than the as-received Al in that the hydrogen desorption extent of AlH3-doped LiBH4 reaches 70%, while it is 54% and 61% for the pure LiBH4 and the Al-doped LiBH4. This is due to the brittle and oxide-free nature of AlH3. Microstructure investigations showed that during heating process, the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite undergoes AlH3 decomposition forming Al* and releasing hydrogen, followed by the decomposition of LiBH4. LiBH4 will react with Al* forming AlB2 and LiAlB compounds during its decomposition, which contributes to the improved hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4.

Abstract:Hydrogen has become a promising energy source due to its efficient and renewable properties. Although promising, hydrogen energy has not been in widespread use due to the lack of high-performance materials for hydrogen storage. Previous studies have shown that the addition of Al-based compounds to LiBH4 can create composites that have good properties for hydrogen storage. In this work, the dehydrogenation performances of different composite systems of 2LiBH4+ M (M = Al, LiAlH4, Li3AlH6) were investigated. The results show that, under a ball to powder ratio of 25:1 and a rotation speed of 300 rpm, the optimum ball milling time is 50 h for synthesizing Li3AlH6 from LiH and LiAlH4. The three studied systems destabilized LiBH4 at relatively low temperatures, and the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite demonstrated excellent behavior. Based on the differential scanning calorimetry results, pure LiBH4 released hydrogen at 469°C. The dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH4 is 416°C for 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 versus 435°C for 2LiBH4-LiAlH4 and 445°C for 2LiBH4-Al. The 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6, 2LiBH4-LiAlH4, and 2LiBH4-Al samples released 9.1, 8, and 5.7 wt.% of H2, respectively. Additionally, the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite released the 9.1 wt.% H2 within 150 min. An increase in the kinetics was achieved. From the results, it was concluded that 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 exhibits the best dehydrogenation performance. Therefore, the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite is considered a promising hydrogen storage material.

Abstract:Li3AlH6 and LiNH2 at a 1:3 molar ratio were mechanically milled to yield a Li–Al–N–H composite. The hydrogen storage properties of the composite were studied using thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction. Addition of LiNH2 lowered the decomposition temperature of Li3AlH6. The Li–Al–N–H composite began to release hydrogen at around 110°C, which was 90°C lower than the initial desorption temperature of Li3AlH6. About 7.46wt% of hydrogen was released from the composite after heating from room temperature to 500°C. A total hydrogen desorption capacity of 8.15wt% was obtained after accounting for hydrogen released in the ball-milling process. The resulting dehydrogenated composite absorbed 3.56wt% of hydrogen at 400°C under a hydrogen pressure of 110bar. The hydrogen absorption capacity and kinetic properties of the Li–Al–N–H composite significantly improved when CeF3 was added to the composite. A maximum hydrogen absorption capacity of 4.8wt% was reached when the composite was doped with 2mol% CeF3.

Abstract:To improve the dehydrogenation properties of LiBH4, a novel hydrogen storage system, LiBH4-Li3AlH6, was synthesized by mechanical ball milling. The dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation properties of LiBH4-Li3AlH6 (molar rato: 1: 1) composites were studied via thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass spectral analysis (MS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The experimental results show that the hydrogen desorption capacity reaches 8.5 wt% and that the whole dehydrogenation is a three-step process: (1) a decomposition reaction Li3AlH6 -> 3LiH + Al + 3/2H(2), occurring at 160 degrees C; (2) formation of an intermediate product from 300 degrees C to 350 degrees C, and then subsequent transformation into Al, AlB2, and H-2. (2LiBH(4) + Al -> [Li2B2AlH4] -> x(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)) + (1-x) [Li2B2AlH4], (0 < x < 1)); and (3) final dehydrogenation of LiH + Al -> LiAl + 1/2H(2), occurring at 415 degrees C, with sequential decomposition of the remaining intermediate ((1-x)[Li2B2AlH4]->(1-x)(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)), (0 < x < 1)). Significantly Improved Dehydrogenation of LiBH4·NH3 Assisted by Al2O3 Nanoscaffolds

Abstract:Enhanced dehydrogenation properties for ammine lithium borohydride (LiBH4 center dot NH3) melt-infiltrated into Al2O3 nanoscaffolds are reported. X-ray diffraction measurements verified the formation of intermediate phase of amorphous state during heating the composites at 65 degrees C. Subsequently, it was revealed by combination of gravimetric and volumetric measurements that a hydrogen desorption capacity of 12.8 wt.%, accounting for 91 mol% of the total amount of the released gas at 230 degrees C, was achieved for the LiBH4 center dot NH3/Al2O3 composite with a mass ratio of 1:4, while in the pristine LiBH4 center dot NH3 merely trace amount of H-2 was detected at this temperature. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectra and B-11 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra were combined to clarify the facilitated recombination of NH3 groups and BH4-1 anions in the composites. As a consequence, the mechanisms for the promoted dehydrogenation in the composites were reasonably deduced as twofold, firstly, the nanosize effects of the loaded LiBH4 center dot NH3 on the dehydrogenation properties in the presence of the oxide nanoscaffolds, which serve as the highly dispersing support for the loaded materials, and assist the formation of the amorphous phase during heating; secondly, the impact of Al2O3 nanoscaffolds on the dehydrogenation of the loaded materials, via promotion of the recombination between BH and NH groups. Extreme high reversible capacity with over 8.0 wt% and excellent hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 combined with LiBH4 and Li3AlH6

Abstract:Magnesium hydride has attracted great attention because of its high theoretical capacity and outstanding reversibility, nevertheless, its practical applications have been restricted by the disadvantages of the sluggish kinetics and high thermodynamic stability. In this work, an unexpected high reversible hydrogen capacity over 8.0 wt% has been achieved from MgH2 metal hydride composited with small amounts of LiBH4 and Li3AlH6 complex hydrides, which begins to release hydrogen at 276 degrees C and then completely dehydrogenates at 360 degrees C. The dehydrogenated MgH2 + LiBH4/Li3AlH6 composite can fully reabsorb hydrogen below 300 degrees C with an excellent cycling stability. The composite exhibits a significant reduction of dehydrogenation activation energy from 279.7 kJ/mol (primitive MgH2) to 139.3 kJ/mol (MgH2 + LiBH4/Li3AlH6), as well as a remarkable reduction of dehydrogenation enthalpy change from 75.1 kJ/mol H-2 (primitive MgH2) to 62.8 kJ/mol H-2 (MgH2 + LiBH4/Li3AlH6). The additives of LiBH4 and Li3AlH6 not only enhance the cycling hydrogen capacity, but also simultaneously improve the reversible de/rehydrogenation kinetics, as well as the dehydrogenation thermodynamics. This notable improvement on the hydrogen absorption/desorption behaviors of the MgH2 + LiBH4/Li3AlH6 composite could be attributed to the dehydrogenated products including Li3Mg7, Mg17Al12 and MgAlB4, which play a key role on reducing the dehydrogenation activation energy and increasing diffusion rate of hydrogen. Meanwhile, the LiBH4 and Li3AlH6 effectively destabilize MgH2 with a remarkable reduction on dehydrogenation enthalpy change in terms of thermodynamics. In particular, the Li3Mg7, Mg17Al12 and MgAlB4 phases can reversibly transform into MgH2, Li3AlH6 and LiBH4 after rehydrogenation, which contribute to maintain a high cycling capacity. This constructing strategy can further promote the development of high reversible capacity Mg-based materials with suitable de/rehydrogenation properties. Abstract:LiBH4 (lithium borohydride) is a promising high capacity hydrogen storage material but suffering from its high dehydrogenation temperature and poor reversibility. To solve this problem, surface-modified AlN (aluminum nitride) was prepared by the alcoholysis process of LiBH4 and composited with LiBH4. By controlling the temperature of the drying process, it can tune the sorts and quantities of the functional groups on AlN. The de/rehydrogenation of LiBH4 is greatly improved by compositing it with surface-modified AlN because oxygen atoms in functional groups promote the decomposition of intermediates of LiBH4 and Hδ+ (positive hydrogen atom) reacting with Hδ− (negative hydrogen atom) in LiBH4. Besides, AlN provides the pathway of H and Li atoms to improve the kinetics of the de/rehydrogenation of LiBH4. Freeze-dried AlN containing O–H and C–H groups shows the best catalytic effect on the hydrogen storage reaction of LiBH4. Abstract:The high desorption temperature and slow kinetics still restrict the applications of LiAlH4 in hydrogen storage. To solve the above problems, NiTiO3@h‐BN and CoTiO3@h‐BN prepared for the first time are introduced into LiAlH4 by ball milling. LiAlH4 doped with 7 wt% NiTiO3@h‐BN, selected as an optimal doping sample, starts to release hydrogen at 68.1 °C, and the total amount of hydrogen released is 7.11 wt% below 300 °C. The activation energies (Ea) of the two‐step hydrogen release reactions are 55.93 and 59.25 kJ∙mol−1, which are 45.8% and 69.0% lower than those of as‐received LiAlH4, respectively. Under 30 bar hydrogen pressure and 300 °C constant temperature, LiAlH4 doped with 7 wt% NiTiO3@h‐BN after dehydrogenation can absorb ≈1.05 wt% hydrogen. Based on density functional theory calculations, AlNi3 and NiTi, in situ formed nanoparticles during ball milling, can decrease the desorption energy barrier of AlH bonding in LiAlH4 and accelerate the breakdown of AlH bonding due to the interfacial charge transfer and the dehybridization. Furthermore, NiTi can enhance the adsorption and splitting of H2, promoting the activation of H2 molecules during the rehydrogenation process. The in situ formed NiTi and AlNi3 in NiTiO3@h‐BN doped‐LiAlH4 after ball milling facilitate the surface adsorption and hydrogen dissociation due to the interfacial charge transfer and the dehybridization of the AlH cluster. In addition, the NiTi catalyst can promote the activation of H2 molecules, which is beneficial to the rehydrogenation performance of LiAlH4.

Abstract:Aluminum hydride (AlH3) is a promising candidate for hydrogen storage due to its high hydrogen density of 10 wt%. Several polymorphs of AlH3 (e.g., alpha, beta, and gamma) have been successfully synthesized by wet chemical reaction of LiAlH4 and AlCl3 in ether solution followed by desolvation. However, the synthesis process of alpha'-AlH3 from wet chemicals still remains unclear. In the present work, alpha'-AlH3 was synthesized first by the formation of the etherate AlH3 through a reaction of LiAlH4 and AlCl3 in ether solution. Then, the etherate AlH3 was heated at 60 degrees C under an ether gas atmosphere and in the presence of excess LiAlH4 to remove the ether ligand. Finally, alpha'-AlH3 was obtained by ether washing to remove the excess LiAlH4. It is suggested that the desolvation of the etherate AlH3 under an ether gas atmosphere is essential for the formation of alpha'-AlH3 from the etherate AlH3. The as-synthesized alpha'-AlH3 takes the form of rod-like particles and can release 7.7 wt% hydrogen in the temperature range 120-200 degrees C.
Destabilized dehydrogenation reaction of LiBH4 by AlF 3

Abstract:In this work, the composites of LiBH4 and AlF3 were prepared and their hydrogen storage properties were investigated. The AlF 3 addition to LiBH4 resulted in significant decreases in dehydrogenation temperature. All the xLiBH4 + AlF3 (x = 1, 2, 3, 5) composites started to release hydrogen from about 100 °C. The dehydrogenation of the composites was accomplished through several steps, depending on the molar ratio of LiBH4 to AlF3. A new phase Li3AlF6 was formed during the first dehydrogenation step, which further reacted with LiBH4. AlB2 was formed only at temperatures higher than 300 °C. Li2B12H12 was detected as an intermediate. The dehydrogenation reactions have significantly reduced and thus favorable enthalpy changes. However, the reversibility of the composites needs to be improved. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To obtain promising materials for hydrogen storage, a composite of Li3AlH6 and LiNH2 with molar ratio of 1:2 was prepared by ball-milling, and its hydrogen storage properties were investigated. The microstructures of the composite after hydrogen desorption/absorption were characterized by XRD and FTIR analysis. The results show that 0.65wt% H2 was released during ball-milling process and 5.97wt% H2 was desorbed when the post-milled composite was heated from room temperature to 450°C. The total hydrogen desorption capacity reached 6.62wt%. And no NH3 is detected by the mass spectrum (MS) analysis over dehydrogenation process. The hydrogen desorption process of Li3AlH6/2LiNH2 composite occurs according to the following reaction: Li3AlH6+2LiNH2→Li3AIN2+2LiH+4H2. Furthermore, 3.57wt% H2 can be reabsorbed at 400°C and under hydrogen pressure of 110bar.

Abstract:Although there have been numerous materials systems studied as potential candidates for hydrogen storage applications, none of the materials known to date has demonstrated enough hydrogen capacity or efficiency at required operating temperature ranges. There are still considerable opportunities for discovery of new materials or material systems that could lead to advances in science as well as commercial technologies in this area. LiAlH(4) is one of the most promising materials owing to its high hydrogen content. In the present work, we investigated dehydrogenation properties of the combined system of LiAlH(4) and LiNH(2) under atmospheric argon. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of 2LiAlH(4)/LiNH(2) mixtures without any catalysts indicated that a large amount of hydrogen (approximately 8.1 wt %) can be released between 85 and 320 degrees C under a heating rate of 2 degrees C/min in three dehydrogenation reaction steps. It is found that LiNH(2) effectively destabilizes LiAlH(4) by reacting with LiH during the dehydrogenation process of LiAlH(4).
Directed Stabilization by Air-Milling and Catalyzed Decomposition by Layered Titanium Carbide Toward Low-Temperature and High-Capacity Hydrogen Storage of Aluminum Hydride

Abstract:AlH3 is a metastable hydride with a theoretical hydrogen capacity of 10.01 wt % and is very easy to decompose during ball milling especially in the presence of many catalysts, which will lead to the attenuation of the available hydrogen capacity. In this work, AlH3 was ball milled in air (called "air-milling") with layered Ti3C2 to prepare a Ti3C2-catalyzed AlH3 hydrogen storage material. Such air-milled and Ti3C2-catalyzed AlH3 possesses excellent hydrogen storage performances, with a low initial decomposition temperature of just 61 °C and a high hydrogen release capacity of 8.1 wt %. In addition, 6.9 wt % of hydrogen can be released within 20 min at constantly 100 °C, with a low activation energy as low as 40 kJ mol-1. Air-milling will lead to the formation of an Al2O3 oxide layer on the AlH3 particles, which will prevent continuous decomposition of AlH3 when milling with active layered Ti3C2. The layered Ti3C2 will grip on and intrude into the AlH3 particle oxide layers and then catalyze the decomposition of AlH3 during heating. The strategy employing air-milling as a synthesis method and utilizing layered Ti3C2 as a catalyst in this work can solve the key issue of severe decomposition during ball milling with catalysts economically and conveniently and thus achieve both high-capacity and low-temperature hydrogen storage of AlH3. This air-milling method is also effective for other active catalysts toward both reducing the decomposition temperature and increasing the available hydrogen capacity of AlH3.

Abstract:The Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH (x = 0, 0.5, 1) novel ternary composites have been synthesized through mechanical ball milling, their favorable dehydrogenation properties and mechanism have been experimentally investigated. It can be found that during ball milling, a slight amount of Mg(BH4)2 would react with LiH and transform into LiBH4, while most Mg(BH4)2 remained stable after ball milling. Two major dehydrogenation steps can be detected in the Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH composite, which belong to the decomposition of AlH3 and Mg(BH4)2, respectively. Remarkably, the onset hydrogen desorption temperature of Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH composite can be reduced to 125.9 °C, with a total hydrogen desorption capacity of 10.3 wt%. It is worth emphasizing that the reversible dehydrogenation capacity is obviously improved to 3.8 wt%, compared to the Mg(BH4)2-AlH3 composite. This reversible capacity can be held for 3 cycles without obvious degeneration. Microstructural analysis on de/rehydrogenated composite has identified the regeneration of [BH4]- in Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-0.5LiH composite and revealed the role of LiH in the cycling hydrogen desorption and absorption processes. The formation of LiBH4 and MgH2 resulted from the rehydrogenation between MgAlB4 and LiH could be helpful for the stability of reversible hydrogen storage performance.

Abstract:Nano α-AlH3 is a promising H2 storage material, with high gravimetric capacity and dehydriding temperature. However, its instability at ambient conditions and relatively slow dehydriding kinetics hinder its applications. This work reports a simple and environmentally friendly synthesis of a novel core-shell α-AlH3@Al(OH)3 nanocomposite with 1.2 nm thick shell. First, α-AlH3/LiCl nanocomposite was synthesized using a mechanochemical method, during which, α-AlH3 was stabilized using imidazolium ionic liquid (IL). After IL application and consequent rinsing with water, α-AlH3@Al(OH)3 composite formed. Its dehydriding kinetics was significantly faster (with the activation energy equal to 52.6 kJ/mol) relative to the pure α-AlH3. At 140 °C, the α-AlH3@Al(OH)3 released 10.0 wt% of its original hydrogen content within 1000 s. For comparison, the same amount of hydrogen was released by the commercial α-AlH3 only after 3600 s. The presence of the Al(OH)3 shell stabilized the α-AlH3 and resulted in absolutely no decomposition of the AlH3 in the α-AlH3@Al(OH)3 composite under ambient conditions for 7 days. Synthesis of this novel core-shell α-AlH3@Al(OH)3 nanocomposite is a new and very promising strategy to improve the stability and the hydrogen storage kinetics simultaneously.

Abstract:LiAlH 4 is considered an effective hydrogen storage material due to its high hydrogen storage capacity and relative abundance of aluminum. However, LiAlH 4 presents disadvantages such as slow kinetics, high dehydrogenation temperature, and poor reversibility. To improve these shortcomings of LiAlH 4 , we designed and prepared Ni-Ti bimetallic metal-organic framework derivatives with stable structures and high dispersion of metal species, which named as Ni-Ti-NC. A series of tests show that the composite components and circular disk-like structure of Ni-Ti-NC can improve the dehydrogenation behavior of LiAlH 4 . Benefiting from the addition of Ni-Ti-NC, the initial decomposition temperature of LiAlH 4 significantly decreased to 59.5 °C, and about 6.11 wt% of hydrogen was rapidly released within 25 min at 200 °C. Meanwhile, the activation energies of the two-step hydrogen evolution reaction decreased to 64.18 kJ·mol −1 and 73.99 kJ·mol −1 , respectively. Furthermore, compared with only 0.09 wt% hydrogen absorption of pure LiAlH 4 at 30 bar hydrogen pressure and 300 °C constant temperature, doping Ni-Ti-NC promoted the hydrogen absorption capacity of LiAlH 4 to nearly 0.64 wt% under the same conditions. In addition, the structure and chemical changes of LiAlH 4 after the addition of Ni-Ti-NC were investigated in detail. The reasons why Ni-Ti-NC improved the hydrogen storage performance of LiAlH 4 were comprehensively analyzed, which helped us design efficient catalysts for solid hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract:In situ X-ray diffraction showed that Ti catalyst can reduce not only the dehydrogenation temperature of NaAlH4, but also that of Na3AlH6 from 250°C to 160°C. The rehydrogenation of the decomposed NaAlH4 is reversible theoretically, but the intermediate hydride, Na3AlH6, is not fully converted into NaAlH4 because of the physical separation of NaH and Al formed in the decomposition, especially the formation of the large Al crystallites. These, therefore, result in a decrease in the hydrogen storage capacity as observed in the following cycling. Additional measurements have showed that those Al crystallites larger than 2.3 μm are no longer effective for rehydrogenation.
