Abstract:A eugenol-based silicone-containing monomer 4,4 '-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane-1,3-dipropyl)bis-2-methoxyphenol(EUSi) was synthesized from eugenol and 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane via the hydrosilylation reaction. And waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with excellent properties was obtained by using EUSi as a type of diol chain extender. The unique combination of rigidity and flexibility in the chemical structure of EUSi greatly facilitated the mechanical properties, thermal properties, and water resistance of WPU. With only a 3% dosage of EUSi, the maximum tensile strength was increased from 6.2 to 22.4 MPa, while the water absorption was decreased from 31.3% to a surprisingly 7.6%. Our work provides a new convenient strategy for the preparation of organosilicon-modified WPU with improved performance.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane (PU) flame retarding gum (I) was synthesized with a special technology by use of waterborne PU as the base material and the added flame-retardants and auxiliary agents. Zeta potential and TEM tests stated the waterborne PU gum absorbed and partially occluded the flame retardants, and the resulted I had good stability. The flame retarding finishing technology was optimized by the orthogonal experiments, and the piloting experiments were carried out in Hongshan Coating Factory, Xiaoshan. The results showed that the finished fabrics attained the high level of the standard fort flame retardancy and other properties.
Development of spiropyran bonded bio-based waterborne polyurethanes for mechanical-responsive color-variable films

Abstract:<p>Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) use water as the solvent to reduce volatile organic compounds emissions and are widely increased because they are environment friendly. Vegetable oil-based polyol is a potential environmental protection material and can replace petroleum-based polyols for WPUs synthesis. In this work, we synthesized new mechanical-responsive soybean oil (SBO)-based WPUs, and their corresponding responsive behaviors were regulated by the flexibility and rigidity of the polymer chains. Soybean oil polyols (MESOs) were firstly synthesized from soybean oils, which were used to synthesize waterborne polyurethanes (SP-MSPUs). Spiropyran (SP) as a mechanophore was bonded to polyurethane chains, and the color of polyurethane films would be changed under the action of stress, which shown the stress-sensitive behavior of polyurethane membrane. The double hydroxyl spiropyran diol (SP2) and the control single hydroxyl spiropyran (SP1) were synthesized and bonded into the SP-MSPU molecular chains, respectively. The SP-MSPU polymer films appeared a translucent light yellow in visible light, and the purple color of polyurethane films was observed under stress tension. Soybean oil polyols with triglyceride bonds are implanted into the polymer to regulate the flexibility and rigidity of the films. From SP- MSPU-115 to SP-MSPU-172 of the polymer samples, the stress required ranged from 1 MPa to 4 MPa when the polymerization tensile deformation was 200%. At the same time, under the same deformation, the UV absorption of polyurethane films synthesized from the same polyol (MESO-134) showed a trend of enhancement with the increase of the molar ratio of NCO and OH in polymer chains. Therefore, excellent mechanical response behavior of a solid SP-MSPU membrane can be obtained. This mechanical responsive SP-MSPU would be used in a variety of applications, such as multi-responsive probe materials, decorative coatings, and anti-falsification technology.</p>

Abstract:A new type of polysiloxane modified polyurethane–acrylic hybrid emulsion was synthesized by solvent-free method and the polysiloxane was introduced into the soft segment of polyurethane chains using dihydroxybutyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The formed film from the hybrid emulsion could provide obviously higher water-resistance property. The preparation technologies such as the content of carboxy group and acrylic monomer, the rate and the time of emulsification were discussed systematically. The chain structure and the particle size were confirmed by the analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The effect of PDMS content on the water resistance and the mechanical property were investigated by absorbed water ratio, water contact angle and dynamic mechanical measurement.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethanes emulsions (WPU) based on polyethylene carbonate diol (PECD) were synthesized, characterized and modified by polypropylene carbonate diol (PPCD) and organosilicon KH-792. The mechanical, thermal and hydrolysis resistance properties of waterborne polyurethanes were comprehensively investigated. The results show that PECD based WPU has very excellent mechanical properties. The tensile strength and the elongation at break the PU was up to 73 MPa and 1040%, which was much higher than that reported for similar types of PPCD-based WPU. It was found that water absorption of PECD based WPU can be decreased dramatically, from 40.9% to 21.1%, after 50% PECD was replaced by PPCD, while tensile strength only decreased from 73.0 MPa to 63.4 MPa. The addition of KH-792 has great influence on PECD based WPU, when 1% KH-792 was added, the water absorption rate decreased from 21.1% to 11.88%, the mechanical strength remained at 63.3 MPa, the WPU film remained transparent after soaking in 80 °C hot water for 4 h.

Abstract:Shear-thickening fluids (STFs) are a new type of intelligent material with excellent performance whose viscosity increase sharply with the increase of shear rate or shear stress. However, the synthesis yield of dispersed phase particles is low, and the particle re-dispersion process is challenging for the industrial production of STFs. In this work, through structural design, a waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with typical shear-thickening properties was synthesized for the first time. This synthesis process is conducive to industrial production. The rheological properties of the synthesized WPU at different concentrations, temperatures, and pH were studied using a rheometer. The results showed that the WPU exhibited typical shear-thickening behavior. However, due to the special core-shell structure of the WPU particles, the shear rate has two transition responses to the shear-thickening behavior. With increasing concentration, the shear-thickening performance of the WPU is enhanced, and the critical shear rate is decreased. For the coexistence of Brownian motion and solvation, the rheological curve of the WPU exhibits a complex response to temperature increase; its shear-thickening behavior decreases with rising temperature, but the viscosity first decreases and then increases with temperature. Due to the presence of carboxyl groups on the surface of the WPU particles, its shear-thickening performance shows a strong response to pH. By appropriately adjusting the pH, the viscosity and particle size of the WPU can be increased through the ionization of carboxyl groups, thereby enhancing the shear-thickening behavior.

Abstract:The development of high-performance waterborne polyurethane ink binder presents challenges due to the lack of outstanding water resistance, adhesion, and heat resistance in traditional waterborne polyurethane. Herein, series of waterborne polyurethane emulsions were synthesized using the pre-polymerization chain expansion and self-emulsification method, with varying contents of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane as the modified post-chain extender. The effect of varying the concentration of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane on the characteristics of waterborne polyurethane dispersions and films was investigated. The results indicated that there was a significant improvement in adhesion, thermal stability, and water resistance with an increase in the concentration of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane. Specifically, When the introduction amount was 3 wt%, the resulting film exhibited the best overall properties, including a tensile strength of 48.4 MPa, water absorption of 4.3 wt%, shear strength and adhesion of 3.9 MPa and 3.86 MPa respectively, as well as a T-peel strength of 14.9 N/mm. This work provided meaningful guidance for developing a novel waterborne polyurethane-based ink binder with strong adhesion, high mechanical properties, and excellent water resistance.

Abstract:Supramolecular polyurea (PU) hydrogels with combined anti-swelling capacity, thermochromic properties, and tunable water content and mechanical performance were obtained by immersing phase separated PU films with hydrophilic soft segments in water till swelling equilibrium. The multiple H-bonds within hard-segment domains are critical to the swelling and mechanical properties, which were rationally designed by using simultaneously two aliphatic diisocyanates with different symmetry and varying molar ratio. Consequently, the hydrogels exhibit a wide range of equilibrium water content (57-80%), elastic modulus (22-476 kPa), breaking strength (33-1720 kPa), and elongation at break (160-1460%). The hydrogels also exhibit fast recovery during cyclic loading-unloading. The incorporation of strong quadruple H-bonds into hard-segment domains endowed the hydrogels with stable anti-swelling capacity. Additionally, the hydrogels changed from transparent to opaque reversibly upon heating and cooling, originating from the phase transition of soft segments. The developed supramolecular PU hydrogels show promising potentials in many fields like smart windows.

Abstract:Stable cationic waterborne polyurethanes (CWPUs) with a high solid content (HSC) were synthesized via the combination of cationic ionic and nonionic segments (polyoxyethylene alkyl amine, PAE). The process was based on an iterative strategy to design the cationic groups in soft segments and the chain terminal of polyurethanes (terminal ions) together with the determination of the optimal bimodal particle size distribution (PSD). The effects of the polymerization degree of poly(ethylene glycol) groups (PEG-g) in PAE and its interaction with the hydrophilic groups N-methyl diethanolamine (MDEA) in polyurethane were studied. It was found that the terminal ions resulted in a much finer dispersion, better dispersion stability, smaller particle size and lower viscosity. Moreover, the highest solid content (52.18%) of CWPU was obtained by the incorporation of PAE and a low terminal ions content of 2.5%, which had a bimodal particle size distribution. The increasing length of PEG-g was also found to enhance the thermal stability and render a better mechanical stability for the polyurethane films as the increasing PEG-g length may weaken the hydrogen bonding and reduce the extent of phase separation. The experimental results were further compared with molecular dynamic simulation results, which verified that the specific molecular structure of this WPU ensured its excellent properties. The static structure and dynamic properties obtained strongly supported the experimental observations reported on the morphology and thermal and mechanical properties of these polyurethanes.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) have recently attracted enormous attentions in extensive industrial applications because of their sustainability and low toxicity. However, due to the use of water as the dispersion medium and abundant hydrophilic moieties of the molecular skeleton, waterborne polyurethanes always suffer from poor mechanical properties and inferior water resistance. In this work, dehydrated sorbitan monooleate (SP), a bio-derived renewable polyol, is introduced into the waterborne polyurethane skeleton to modulate the contents of the traditional trifunctional polyol of trimethylolpropane (TMP). Due to the rigid furan ring and the fatty side chain in the SP, the SP-modulated waterborne polyurethanes (WPU-SP) exhibit simultaneous excellent mechanical properties, high toughness, flexibility, and versatility, with the maximum tensile strength of WPU-SP reaching 39.19 MPa, and the film is capable of lifting weights over 25,000 times its own weight without fracture. Additionally, compared to the traditional waterborne polyurethane extended with TMP, the wear resistance and the water resistance of WPU-SP are significantly improved, as the decreases in wear rate and water absorption rate of WPU-SP are up to 59 % and 45 %, respectively. Benefiting from these unique properties, the WPU-SP shows excellent performance in anticorrosion and exceptional applicability for soft leather materials, in which the corrosion prevention efficiency can reach over 95 % and the wear index can be reduced to within 10 mg as a protective coating. This study represents a facile and effective approach for developing high-performance sustainable waterborne polyurethane materials through the incorporation of SP into polymer networks.

Abstract:As an alternative to solvent-based polyurethane, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) uses water as dispersants and can significantly reduce VOC. However, dispersing polyurethanes with hydrophobic backbones in water requires hydrophilic groups, which undermine the water resistance. It remains a challenge to simultaneously improve water resistance and mechanical properties. Here we report a polyurethane with superior mechanical properties and water resistance through the introduction of an organic-inorganic hybrid material, MQ silicone resin. Hydroxyl functionalized MQ silicone resin increases chemical crosslinking and improves the microphase separation and hydrogen bonding strength of polyurethanes. When the MQ-OH content was 10.1 wt%, the tensile strength increased from 27 MPa to 37.3 MPa, and the toughness increased from 74.8 MJ/m3 to 97.4 MJ/m3. Si-O-Si backbones with low surface energy can migrate to the film surface, increasing the surface hydrophobicity. WPU films with MQ silicone resin exhibited remarkable tensile strength retention, with 84.7 % after 40 h hydrolysis in 80 °C water, while WPU retained only 24.6 %. MQ silicone resin offers a novel approach to enhance the hydrophobic properties of WPU without compromising the mechanical properties.

Abstract:Organosilicon-modified polyurethane have been synthesized using the prepolymer method and characterized by Fourier infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), solvent resistance analysis, and stressstrain tests. The FTIR spectra show that the polyurethane is fully reacted and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is chemically incorporated into the copolymer. SEM reveals a multiphase structure with surface cracking and thermal analysis indicates that the heat resistance properties are better when the PDMS concentration is low. According to the solvent resistance, water and acetone uptake decreases when the PDMS content is less than 4 wt % while the ethanol uptake changes indistinctively. The mechanical properties of the films are also discussed. A tensile strength up to 6 wt % has the largest effect while the elongation at break decreases. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Abstract A series of self‐healing waterborne polyurethane (WPU) films utilizing reversible covalent bond acylhydrazones diol (PA) as chain extender were successfully synthesized. The self‐healing performance of WPU with different content of chain extender PA has been systemically characterized via cut‐and‐healing tests and mechanical quantitative evaluation. The film can repair cracks through acylhydrazone exchange reactions within 12 h. When the content of PA is 1.5 wt%, the WPU has the highest self‐healing efficiency of 90.5%. Meanwhile, the effect of PA mass fraction on the particle size distribution, mechanical ability, crystallization, water resistance properties, and thermal stability of WPU were evaluated. With the introduction of acylhydrazone bonds, the hydrophobicity of the WPU material was enhanced, while achieving self‐healing performance, which solves the problem of aging and replacement of materials. These results indicated that the self‐healing WPU exhibited great application prospect as a versatile material.

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is usually used to obtain favorable performances of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) such as higher hardness, exceptional thermal stability and lower interfacial tension. However, there is always a problem that waterborne polyurethane (WPU) often performs weak tensile strength, lower tenacity and brittle property at room temperature when polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is embedded into the backbone of polyurethane. The study aims to address the problem by constructing dual crosslinking structure, namely introducing trimethylolpropane as an intramolecular crosslinking agent into prepolymers and then adding waterborne polycarbodiimide (SK-400) as a post-crosslinking agent in order to further enlarge the degree of crosslinking and mainly make up for the shortcoming that mechanical property decreases when polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was inserted into molecule chains. Initially a novel inner-crosslinking prepolymer (SiWPU) comprising polydimethylsiloxane need to be synthesized successfully by inserting trimethylolpropane into prepolymers. Then the sample SiWPU-3 was picked out as a matrix resin and dropwise added polycarbodiimide (SK-400) as a post-crosslinking agent into the matrix resin (C–SiWPU). As pH was gradually lowering following the evaporation of triethylamine in the emulsion (C–SiWPU), carboxyl groups (COOH) in prepolymers started to react with SK-400 (NCN) to form twofold crosslinking structure. When 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8 wt% of waterborne polycarbodiimide (SK-400) was incorporated into the solution, the tensile strengths are 47.8 MPa, 57.7 MPa, 65 MPa, 57.6 MPa and 54.5 MPa and the elongation at break 732%, 756%, 798%, 707% and 700%. The crosslinking density of SiWPU-3 without the addition of waterborne polycarbodiimide (SK-400) is 3.86 × 10−3 mol/cm3. As 6 wt% of waterborne polycarbodiimide (SK-400) was added into the emulsion of SiWPU-3, the crosslinking density of C–SiWPU-6 (6 wt% SK-400) is 6.19 × 10−3 mol/cm3. The films show excellent extensibility and exceptional tenacity. Hence, the emulsion is able to be applied in leather industry.

Abstract:Although silicone softeners are widely used in textile processing and finishing, elasticity and wash durability improvements remain necessary. In this study, a new bifunctional hydroxysilane coupling agent (KHP) was designed and synthesized. KHP was used as a chain extender incorporated into the polyurethane segments, then reacted with linear hydroxyl silicone oil (PMX500) through a condensation reaction, resulting in a polyurethane-grafted silicone finishing agent (KHP-PU). The KHP-PU was applied to polyamide fabric using a pad-dry-cure process, and the treated fabric was systematically evaluated for surface characteristics and hand-feel properties. Results demonstrated that KHP-PU significantly enhanced the fabric's softness and elasticity while improving its mechanical and antistatic properties. Moreover, adjusting the amount of KHP in KHP-PU effectively regulates the distribution of polysiloxane segments on the fiber surface, optimizing the fabric's handle. This study provides innovative insights for designing and developing new multifunctional softeners to create advanced textile materials with enhanced consumer appeal.

Abstract:Abstract The mechanical properties with balanced plasticity and elasticity in hygroscopic materials offer unusual opportunities for their real‐world applications. However, current approaches for tuning their mechanical properties are severely limited by the intrinsic tie between their reversible hydroplasticity and the geometric shapes. Herein, moist‐defined biopolymers with tunable multisteady mechano‐responsiveness, thiolated cellulose 10‐undecenoyl esters cross‐linked with imine‐coordinated boroxine (TCUE‐IBs), are reported. The viscoelastic nature of polymer networks plays the key role in maintaining the geometry of materials with moist‐triggered stress adjustment under various relative humidity. Resulting hydroplasticity enabled by the dual dynamic bonds of boroxine and Schiff base allows shape‐changing on demand after binding sufficient water. Such an unusual equilibrium of plasticity and viscoelasticity within one single biobased polymer system permits unprecedented tunable multisteady mechano‐responsiveness and shape‐changing. At the same time, these mechanical features offer great prospects where water is present for geometric manipulation, such as multifunctional devices in biomedicine and environment.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) prepolymer was synthesised by the reaction of poly(butylene itaconate) ester (PBI, Mn=1109g/mol), 1,6-hexanediol, dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), 2,4-toluene diisocynate (TDI), hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), and absolute ethanol as blocking agent, triethylamine as neutralizer. Cross-linked WPU was synthesized by trimethylolpropane (TMP) as crosslinker. The influences of PBI, DMPA, and TMP content on WPU emulsions and films were investigated. The structure of WPU was determined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, thermal properties and glass transition temperature of WPU films were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively, and morphology of the emulsion particles was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Through TGA, the heat resistance of the cross-linked WPU film was better than WPU film. By DSC analysis, glass transition temperature of cross-linked WPU film (21 degrees C) was higher than WPU film (10 degrees C).
Synthesis and application of multifunctional lignin-modified cationic waterborne polyurethane in textiles

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) often have limitations like inadequate weathering resistance and thermal stability. To overcome these shortcomings, lignin has been selected as a modifier for its abundant availability, renewability, and biocompatibility. This study synthesized a cationic WPU using isophorone diisocyanate and polyethylene glycol as raw materials. Hydrophilicity was attained through the inclusion of dihydroxyethyl dodecylamine as a chain extender, while the introduction of epoxy monomers and lignin served to modify the polyurethane. Furthermore, a dye dispersion for cotton fabric dyeing was prepared by combining the synthesized polyurethane, chitosan, and dyes. The cationic nature of the polyurethane played a crucial role in facilitating dye adhesion and uptake on the fabric surface, resulting in improved dyeing performance. The incorporation of epoxy side chains and chitosan cross-linking contributed to the excellent color fastness of the dyed fabrics. Moreover, the incorporation of lignin and chitosan endowed the fabric with antibacterial properties. Simultaneously, it provided effective UV protection, characterized by a high UV protection factor value for the fabrics. This lignin-modified WPU exhibits tremendous potential in applications such as textile coatings, adhesives, and color fixation agents. It effectively addresses the limitations of traditional WPUs and offers notable advantages, including a renewable source, cost-effectiveness, and biocompatibility.
