Abstract:We investigate the formation of multipole topological solitons at the edges of two and three coupled parallel Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) waveguide arrays. We show that independent variations of waveguide spacing in the unit cells (dimers) in coupled waveguide arrays result in the emergence at their edges of several topological edge states with different internal symmetry. The number of emerging edge states is determined by how many arrays are in topologically nontrivial phase. In the presence of nonlinearity, such edge states give rise to families of multipole topological edge solitons with distinct stability properties. Our results illustrate that coupling between quasi-one-dimensional topological structures substantially enriches the variety of stable topological edge solitons existing in them.

Abstract:We show that one-dimensional Floquet trimer arrays with periodically oscillating waveguides support two different and co-existing types of topological Floquet edge states in two different topological gaps in Floquet spectrum. In these systems nontrivial topology is introduced by longitudinal periodic oscillations of the waveguide centers, leading to the formation of Floquet edge states in certain range of oscillation amplitudes despite the fact that the structure spends half of the period in ``instantaneously'' nontopological phase, and only during other half-period it is ``instantaneously'' topological. Two co-existing Floquet edge states are characterized by different phase relations between bright spots in the unit cell -- in one mode these spots are in-phase, while in other mode they are out-of-phase. We show that in focusing nonlinear medium topological Floquet edge solitons, representing exactly periodic nonlinear localized Floquet states, can bifurcate from both these types of linear edge states. Both types of Floquet edge solitons can be stable and can be created dynamically using two-site excitations.

Abstract:We address continuous two-dimensional (2D) star-junctions formed by different numbers of Su–Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains that have one common waveguide in the center of the junction. We show that by changing waveguide shifts in the dimers forming individual SSH chains, one can create a rich variety of modes in the center of the junction. Independently of the relation between non-equal bonds of the SSH chains, the in-gap modes localized in the center of the junction can be considered as topological, either representing extensions of the conventional topological edge stages or being modes induced by a defect at one of the SSH chain edges. Degeneracy of the eigenvalues and structure of the localized modes of fully 2D junctions depend on their symmetry and number of chains, and are different from their 1D counterparts obtained in the tight-binding approximation. In the presence of the focusing nonlinearity of the medium such states give rise to families of solitons with distinct stability properties depending on the number of chains in junction, waveguide shifts, and mode symmetry.

Abstract:We study linear and nonlinear topological edge states on the domain wall (DW) of two helical waveguide arrays with opposite helicities. This composite helical structure is constructed by using the multibeam interference (MBI) method, in which the helix pitch and helicity is readily modulated by varying the topological charge of an interfering vortex beam. The topological edge states are characterized by the gap Chern number, and their propagation dynamics are controlled by the tunable lattice DW structure. In the linear region, we find the edge states exist only within a threshold value of the helical radius and for a certain disorder of the helix pitch. In the nonlinear region, surprisingly, we find that it is possible to form quasi-solitons along the DW, including multipole-like edge solitons whose different poles on either side of the DW exhibit opposite helicities. The long-distance propagation dynamics of such DW solitons are numerically studied from the evolution of their intensity patterns and the "center of mass".This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:We demonstrate that an array of discrete waveguides on a slab substrate, both featuring the $\chi^{2}$ nonlinearity, supports stable solitons composed of discrete and continuous components. Two classes of fundamental composite solitons are identified: ones consisting of a discrete fundamental-frequency (FF) component in the waveguide array, coupled to a continuous second-harmonic (SH) component in the slab waveguide, and solitons with an inverted FF/SH structure. Twisted bound states of the fundamental solitons are found too. In contrast with usual systems, the \emph{intersite-centered} fundamental solitons and bound states with the twisted continuous components are stable, in an almost entire domain of their existence.
Solitons in higher-order topological insulator created by unit cell twisting

Abstract:We show that higher-order topological insulators can be created from usual square structure by twisting waveguides in each unit cell around the axis passing through the center of the unit cell, even without changing intracell distance between waveguides. When applied to usual square array, this approach produces two-dimensional generalization of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) structure supporting topological corner modes with propagation constants belonging to two forbidden spectral gaps opening only for twist angles from certain interval. In contrast to usual SSH arrays, where higher-order topology is typically introduced by diagonal waveguide shifts and only one type of corner states exists, our SSH-like structure in topological phase supports two co-existing types of in-phase and out-of-phase corner modes appearing in two different topological gaps that open in the spectrum. Therefore, twisting of the unit cell qualitatively changes topological properties of the system, offering a new degree of freedom in creation of higher-order topological phases. In material with focusing cubic nonlinearity two coexisting types of topological corner solitons emerge from these modes, whose existence and stability properties are studied here. Despite different internal structure, both such modes can be simultaneously dynamically stable in the appreciable part of the topological gap.

Abstract:We study the propagation of discrete solitons on chains of coupled optical waveguides where finite networks of waveguides are inserted at some points. By properly selecting the topology of these networks, it is possible to control the transmission of traveling solitons: we show here that inhomogeneous waveguide networks may be used as filters for soliton propagation. Our results provide a first step in the understanding of the interplay/competition between topology and nonlinearity for soliton dynamics in optical fibers.
Symmetric and asymmetric solitons and vortices in linearly coupled two-dimensional waveguides with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity

Abstract:It is well known that the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity supports a family of stable fundamental solitons, as well as solitary vortices (alias vortex rings), which are stable for sufficiently large values of the norm. We study stationary localized modes in a symmetric linearly coupled system of two such equations, focusing on asymmetric states. The model may describe "optical bullets" in dual-core nonlinear optical waveguides (including spatiotemporal vortices that were not discussed before), or a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded into a "dual-pancake" trap. Each family of solutions in the single-component model has two different counterparts in the coupled system, one symmetric and one asymmetric. Similarly to the earlier studied coupled 1D system with the CQ nonlinearity, the present model features bifurcation loops, for fundamental and vortex solitons alike: with the increase of the total energy (norm), the symmetric solitons become unstable at a point of the direct bifurcation, which is followed, at larger values of the energy, by the reverse bifurcation restabilizing the symmetric solitons. However, on the contrary to the 1D system, the system may demonstrate a double bistability for the fundamental solitons. The stability of the solitons is investigated via the computation of instability growth rates for small perturbations. Vortex rings, which we study for two values of the "spin", s = 1 and 2, may be subject to the azimuthal instability, like in the single-component model. We also develop a quasi-analytical approach to the description of the bifurcations diagrams, based on the variational approximation. Splitting of asymmetric vortices, induced by the azimuthal instability, is studied by means of direct simulations. Interactions between initially quiescent solitons of different types are studied too.

Abstract:Floquet systems with periodically varying in time parameters enable realization of unconventional topological phases that do not exist in static systems with constant parameters and that are frequently accompanied by appearance of novel types of the topological states. Among such Floquet systems are the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices with periodically-modulated couplings that can support at their edges anomalous $\pi$ modes of topological origin despite the fact that the lattice spends only half of the evolution period in topologically nontrivial phase, while during other half-period it is topologically trivial. Here, using Su-Schrieffer-Heeger arrays composed from periodically oscillating waveguides inscribed in transparent nonlinear optical medium, we report experimental observation of photonic anomalous $\pi$ modes residing at the edge or in the corner of the one- or two-dimensional arrays, respectively, and demonstrate a new class of topological $\pi$ solitons bifurcating from such modes in the topological gap of the Floquet spectrum at high powers. $\pi$ solitons reported here are strongly oscillating nonlinear Floquet states exactly reproducing their profiles after each longitudinal period of the structure. They can be dynamically stable in both one- and two-dimensional oscillating waveguide arrays, the latter ones representing the first realization of the Floquet photonic higher-order topological insulator, while localization properties of such $\pi$ solitons are determined by their power.

Light bullets in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger photonic topological insulators

Abstract:We introduce a different class of thresholdless three-dimensional soliton states that form in higher-order topological insulators based on a two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger array of coupled waveguides. The linear spectrum of such structures is characterized by the presence of a topological gap with corner states residing in them. We find that a focusing Kerr nonlinearity allows families of light bullets bifurcating from the linear corner states to exist as stable three-dimensional solitons, which inherit topological protection from their linear corner counterparts and, remarkably, survive even in the presence of considerable disorder. The light bullets exhibit a spatial localization degree that depends strongly on the array dimerization and may feature large temporal widths in the topological gap near the bifurcation point, thus drastically reducing the otherwise strong instabilities caused by higher-order effects.

Cavity Soliton-Induced Topological Edge States

Abstract:Over the past decade, cavity solitons have attracted substantial attention for their rich dynamics and their myriad potential applications. Recently, there has been growing interest in understanding cavity solitons in systems of coupled resonators, where both new physics and applications can emerge. While numerous works have theoretically studied the interplay between cavity solitons and lattice topology, experimental demonstrations of cavity solitons in topological lattices remain elusive. Here, we experimentally realize cavity solitons in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice and illustrate that the synergy between topology and soliton formation dynamics can induce soliton formation at the boundaries of a topological SSH lattice. Our work illustrates the rich physics of cavity solitons in topological lattices and demonstrates a flexible approach to study solitons in large-scale coupled resonator arrays.

Abstract:In this work, using binary Bose-Einstein condensate we propose a new type of topological insulator that does not explicitly use specially designed potential landscape, but instead utilizes spatially inhomogeneous Rabi coupling between two components, in the form of one- or two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) structure, combined with Zeeman splitting. Such Rabi lattices reveal the appearance of topologically nontrivial phases (including higher-order ones) controlled by spatial shift of the domains with enhanced coupling between condensates within unit cells of the structure, where localized topological states appear at the edges or in the corners of truncated Rabi lattice. We also show that the properties of edge states, their spatial localization, and location of their chemical potential within topological gap can be controlled by interatomic interactions that lead to formation of gap topological edge solitons bifurcating from linear edge states. Such solitons in condensates with inhomogeneous Rabi coupling appear as very robust nonlinear topological objects that do not require any threshold norm for their formation even in two-dimensional geometries, and that can exist in stable form for both attractive and repulsive interactions. Our results demonstrate considerable enhancement of stability of solitons in topological Rabi lattices in comparison with trivial Rabi lattices. They open new prospects for realization of topologically nontrivial phases by spatial engineering of coupling in multicomponent systems.

Abstract:We study the existence and stability of $\pi$-solitons on a ring of periodically oscillating waveguides. The array is arranged into Su-Schrieffer-Heeger structure placed on a ring, with additional spacing between two ends of the array. Due to longitudinal oscillations of waveguides, this Floquet structure spends half of the longitudinal period in topological phase, while on the other half it is nontopological. Nevertheless, waveguide oscillations lead to the emergence of anomalous topological $\pi$-modes at both ends of the structure that strongly couple in our ring geometry, leading to the formation of previously unexplored in-phase and out-of-phase $\pi$-modes. We study topological solitons bifurcating from such linear $\pi$-modes and demonstrate how their properties and stability depend on the size of the ring and on spacing between two ends of the array.

Abstract:Topological edge solitons represent a significant research topic in the nonlinear topological photonics. They maintain their profiles during propagation, due to the joint action of lattice potential and nonlinearity, and at the same time are immune to defects or disorders, thanks to the topological protection. In the past few years topological edge solitons were reported in systems composed of helical waveguide arrays, in which the time-reversal symmetry is effectively broken. Very recently, topological valley Hall edge solitons have been demonstrated in straight waveguide arrays with the time-reversal symmetry preserved. However, these were scalar solitary structures. Here, for the first time, we report vector valley Hall edge solitons in straight waveguide arrays arranged according to the photonic lattice with innate type-II Dirac cones, which is different from the traditional photonic lattices with type-I Dirac cones such as honeycomb lattice. This comes about because the valley Hall edge state can possess both negative and positive dispersions, which allows the mixing of two different edge states into a vector soliton. Our results not only provide a novel avenue for manipulating topological edge states in the nonlinear regime, but also enlighten relevant research based on the lattices with type-II Dirac cones.

Abstract:We propose solitons in a photonic topological insulator: self-localized wave packets forming topological edge states residing in the bulk of a nonlinear photonic topological insulator. These self-forming entities exhibit, despite being in the bulk, the property of unidirectional transport, similar to the transport their linear counterparts display on the edge of a topological insulator. In the concrete case of a Floquet topological insulator, such a soliton forms when a wave packet induces, through nonlinearity, a defect region in a honeycomb lattice of helical optical waveguides, and at the same time the wave packet populates a continuously rotating outer (or inner) edge state of that region. The concept is universal and applicable to topological systems with nonlinear response or mean-field interactions.
Coupling of Edge States and Topological Bragg Solitons.

Abstract:The existence of the edge states at the interface between two media with different topological properties is protected by symmetry, which makes such states robust against structural defects or disorder. We show that, if a system supports more than one topological edge state at the interface, even a weak periodic deformation may scatter one edge state into another without coupling to bulk modes. This is the Bragg scattering of the edge modes, which in a topological system is highly selective, with closed bulk and backward scattering channels, even when conditions for resonant scattering are not satisfied. When such a system bears nonlinearity, Bragg scattering enables the formation of a new type of soliton-topological Bragg solitons. We report them in a spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) Bose-Einstein condensate in a homogeneous honeycomb Zeeman lattice. An interface supporting two edge states is created by two different SOCs, with the y component of the synthetic magnetic field having opposite directions at different sides of the interface. The reported Bragg solitons are found to be stable.
Mobile Topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Soliton in a Josephson Metamaterial

Abstract:Circuits involving arrays of Josephson junctions have emerged as a new platform for exploring and simulating complex bosonic systems. Motivated by this advance, we develop and theoretically analyze a one-dimensional bosonic system with sublattice symmetry, a bosonic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. The system features electrostatically controlled topological mid-gap states that we call soliton states. These modes can be measured using either spectroscopy through a normal lead or admittance measurements. We develop a protocol to adiabatically shuttle the position of these topological soliton states using local electrostatic gates. We demonstrate a nearly perfect fidelity of soliton shuttling for timescales within experimental reach.

Abstract:Topological edge solitons propagating along the edge of a photonic topological insulator are localized self-sustained hybrid states that are immune to defects/disorders due to the protection of the edge states stemming from the nontrivial topology of the system. Here, we predict that exceptionally robust dark valley Hall edge solitons may form at the domain walls between two honeycomb lattices with broken inversion symmetry. The underlying structure can be created with femtosecond laser inscription, it possesses a large bandgap where well-localized dark edge solitons form, and in contrast to systems with broken time-reversal symmetry, it does not require external magnetic fields or complex longitudinal waveguide modulations for the realization of the topological phase. We present the envelope equation allowing constructing dark valley Hall edge solitons analytically. Such solitons propagate without radiation into the bulk of the lattice and can circumvent sharp corners, which allows observing their persistent circulation along the closed triangular domain wall boundary. They survive over huge distances even in the presence of disorder in the underlying lattice. We also investigate interactions of closely located dark topological valley Hall edge solitons and show that they are repulsive and lead to the formation of two gray edge solitons, moving with different group velocities departing from group velocity of the linear edge state on which initial dark solitons were constructed. Our results illustrate that nonlinear valley Hall systems can support a rich variety of new self-sustained topological states and may inspire their investigation in other nonlinear systems, such as atomic vapors and polariton condensates.

Abstract:Discrete spatial solitons are self-consistent solutions of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation that maintain their shape during propagation. Here we show, using a pump-probe technique, that soliton formation can be used to optically induce and control a linear topological end state in the bulk of a Su–Schrieffer–Heeger lattice, using evanescently-coupled waveguide arrays. Specifically, we observe an abrupt nonlinearly-induced transition above a certain power threshold due to an inversion symmetry-breaking nonlinear bifurcation. Our results demonstrate all-optical active control of topological states.
