Abstract:A bstract We give a general description of gauge symmetry breaking using vertical and remainder fluxes in 4D F-theory models. The fluxes can break a geometric gauge group to a smaller group and induce chiral matter, even when the larger group admits no chiral matter representations. We focus specifically on applications to realizations of the Standard Model gauge group and chiral matter spectrum through breaking of rigid exceptional gauge groups E 7 , E 6 , which are ubiquitous in the 4D F-theory landscape. Supplemented by an intermediate SU(5) group, these large classes of models give natural constructions of Standard Model-like theories with small numbers of generations of matter in F-theory.

Abstract:We realize higher-form symmetries in F-theory compactifications on non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. Central to this endeavour is the topology of the boundary of the non-compact elliptic fibration, as well as the explicit construction of relative 2-cycles in terms of Lefschetz thimbles. We apply the analysis to a variety of elliptic fibrations, including geometries where the discriminant of the elliptic fibration intersects the boundary. We provide a concrete realization of the 1-form symmetry group by constructing the associated charged line operator from the elliptic fibration. As an application we compute the symmetry topological field theories in the case of elliptic three-folds, which correspond to mixed anomalies in 5d and 6d theories.

Abstract:We consider quantum mechanical gauge theories with sixteen supersymmetries. The Hamiltonians or Lagrangians characterizing these theories can contain higher derivative terms. In the operator approach, we show that the free theory is essentially the unique abelian theory with up to four derivatives in the following sense: any small deformation of the free theory, which preserves the supersymmetries, can be gauged away by a unitary conjugation. We also present a method for deriving constraints on terms appearing in an effective Lagrangian. We apply this method to the effective Lagrangian describing the dynamics of two well-separated clusters of D0-branes. As a result, we prove a non-renormalization theorem for the ν4 interaction.

Higher Form Symmetries TFT in 6d

Abstract:Symmetries and anomalies of a $d$-dimensional quantum field theory are often encoded in a $(d+1)$-dimensional topological action, called symmetry topological field theory (TFT). We derive the symmetry TFT for the 2-form and 1-form symmetries of 6d $(1,0)$ field theories, focusing on theories with a single tensor multiplet (rank 1). We implement this by coupling the low-energy tensor branch action to the background fields for the higher-form symmetries and by looking at the symmetry transformation rules on dynamical and background fields. These transformation rules also imply a mixing of the higher-form symmetries in a 3-group structure. For some specific and related higher rank cases, we also derive the symmetry TFT from the holographic dual IIA supergravity solutions. The symmetry TFT action contains a coupling between the 2-form symmetry and the 1-form symmetry backgrounds, which leads to a mixed anomaly between the 1-form symmetries of the 5d KK-theory obtained by circle compactification. We confirm this by a pure 5d analysis provided by the 5d effective low-energy Coulomb branch Lagrangian coupled to background fields. We also derive the symmetry TFT for 5d $SU(p)$ supersymmetric gauge theories with Chern-Simons level $q$ and for 5d theories without non-abelian gauge theory description at low-energy. Finally, we discuss the fate of the 2-form and 1-form symmetry of rank 1 6d field theories when coupled to gravity.

Abstract:Generalized global symmetries are a common feature of many quantum field theories decoupled from gravity. By contrast, in quantum gravity/the Swampland program, it is widely expected that all global symmetries are either gauged or broken, and this breaking is in turn related to the expected completeness of the spectrum of charged states in quantum gravity. We investigate the fate of such symmetries in the context of 7D and 5D vacua realized by compact Calabi-Yau spaces with localized singularities in M theory. We explicitly show how gravitational backgrounds support additional dynamical degrees of freedom which trivialize (i.e., "break") the higher symmetries of the local geometric models. Local compatibility conditions across these different sectors lead to gluing conditions for gauging higher-form and (in the 5D case) higher-group symmetries. This also leads to a preferred global structure of the gauge group and higher-form gauge symmetries. Symmetries from outer automorphisms and unorthodox group extensions

Abstract:Symmetries play an essential role in the construction and phenomenology of quantum field theories (QFTs). We discuss how to construct symmetries of QFTs by extending minimal "seed" symmetry groups to larger groups that contain the seed(s) as subgroup(s). On the one hand, there are so-called "normal" extensions, which are given by outer automorphisms of the original symmetry group (including the trivial one) and contain the seed as a normal subgroup. On the other hand, there can be "unorthodox extensions" which do not have this property. We demonstrate our logic on the most general scalar potentials of the two- and three-Higgs-doublet models (2HDM and 3HDM). For the 2HDM, we show that all symmetry groups, including the different possible classes of CP and continuous symmetry groups, can be obtained from extensions of the smallest possible symmetry CP1 by consecutive outer automorphisms. Scanning over normal and unorthodox group extensions might be the easiest way to "machine learn" the possible symmetries of a QFT. However, many of the groups constructible in this way may not be realizable in a concrete model, in the sense that they lead to additional accidental symmetries. Hence, we also comment on a different, "top-down" way to obtain the possible realizable symmetry groups of a QFT based on the covariant transformation of couplings under the most general basis changes.

Symmetries and Conservation Laws in Horava Gravity

Abstract:Horava gravity has been proposed as a renormalizable quantum gravity without the ghost problem through anisotropic scaling dimensions which break Lorentz symmetry in UV. In the Hamiltonian formalism, due to the Lorentz-violating terms, the constraint structure looks quite different from that of general relativity (GR) but we have recently found that "there exists the case where we can recover the same number of degrees of freedom as in GR", in a rather general set-up. In this paper, we study its Lagrangian perspectives and examine the full diffeomorphism (Diff) symmetry and its associated conservation laws in Horava gravity. Surprisingly, we find that the full Diff symmetry in the action can also be recovered when a certain condition, called "super-condition", which super-selects the Lorentz-symmetric sector in Horava gravity, is satisfied. This indicates that the broken Lorentz symmetry, known as "foliation-preserving" Diff, is just an "apparent" symmetry of the Horava gravity action and rather its "full action symmetry can be as large as the Diff in GR ". The super-condition exactly corresponds to the tertiary constraint in Hamiltonian formalism which is the second-class constraint and provides a non-trivial realization of the Lorentz symmetry otherwise being absent apparently. From the recovered Lorentz symmetry in the action, we obtain the conservation laws with the Noether currents as in covariant theories. The general formula for the conserved Noether charges reproduces the mass of four-dimensional static black holes with an "arbitrary" cosmological constant in Horava gravity, and is independent of ambiguities associated with the choice of asymptotic boundaries. We also discuss several challenging problems, including its implications to Hamiltonian formalism, black hole thermodynamics, radiations from colliding black holes.

On Global Symmetries and Fayet-Iliopoulos Terms

Abstract:We revisit the genuine Fayet-Iliopoulos terms of 4D N=1 supergravity. Such terms are commonly believed to preserve a global symmetry, and therefore they are in conflict with the principles of quantum gravity. However, we find that generically there do exist supersymmetric terms that break explicitly the specific global symmetry, while preserving gauge invariance. We illustrate this, by providing a series of examples, including superpotentials and superspace higher order terms, along with a general prescription for their construction.

On the Fate of Stringy Non-Invertible Symmetries

Abstract:Non-invertible symmetries in quantum field theory (QFT) generalize the familiar product rule of groups to a more general fusion rule. In many cases, gauged versions of these symmetries can be regarded as dual descriptions of invertible gauge symmetries. One may ask: are there any other types of non-invertible gauge symmetries? In theories with gravity we find a new form of non-invertible gauge symmetry that emerges in the limit of fundamental, tensionless strings. These stringy non-invertible gauge symmetries appear in standard examples such as non-abelian orbifolds. Moving away from the tensionless limit always breaks these symmetries. We also find that both the conventional form of non-invertible gauge symmetries and these stringy generalizations are realized in AdS/CFT. Although generically broken, approximate non-invertible symmetries have implications for Swampland constraints: in certain cases they can be used to prove the existence of towers of states related to the Distance Conjecture, and can sometimes explain the existence of slightly sub-extremal states which fill in the gaps in the sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture.

Generalized Symmetry in Dynamical Gravity

Abstract:We explore generalized symmetry in the context of nonlinear dynamical gravity. Our basic strategy is to transcribe known results from Yang-Mills theory directly to gravity via the tetrad formalism, which recasts general relativity as a gauge theory of the local Lorentz group. By analogy, we deduce that gravity exhibits a one-form symmetry implemented by an operator $U_\alpha$ labeled by a center element $\alpha$ of the Lorentz group and associated with a certain area measured in Planck units. The corresponding charged line operator $W_\rho$ is the holonomy in a spin representation $\rho$, which is the gravitational analog of a Wilson loop. The topological linking of $U_\alpha$ and $W_\rho$ has an elegant physical interpretation from classical gravitation: the former materializes an exotic chiral cosmic string defect whose quantized conical deficit angle is measured by the latter. We verify this claim explicitly in an AdS-Schwarzschild black hole background. Notably, our conclusions imply that the standard model exhibits a new symmetry of nature at scales below the lightest neutrino mass. More generally, the absence of global symmetries in quantum gravity suggests that the gravitational one-form symmetry is either gauged or explicitly broken. The latter mandates the existence of fermions. Finally, we comment on generalizations to magnetic higher-form or higher-group gravitational symmetries.

Abstract:We study generalized global symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies in 3d N=4 superconformal field theories (SCFTs). Following some general considerations, we focus on good quiver gauge theories, comprised of balanced unitary nodes and unbalanced unitary and special unitary nodes. While the global form of the Higgs branch symmetry group may be determined from the UV Lagrangian, the global form of Coulomb branch symmetry groups and associated mixed 't Hooft anomalies are more subtle due to potential symmetry enhancement in the IR. We describe how Coulomb branch symmetry groups and their mixed 't Hooft anomalies can be deduced from the UV Lagrangian by studying center charges of various types of monopole operators, providing a concrete and unambiguous way to implement 't Hooft anomaly matching. The final expression for the symmetry group and 't Hooft anomalies has a concise form that can be easily read off from the quiver data, specifically from the positions of the unbalanced and flavor nodes with respect to the positions of the balanced nodes. We provide consistency checks by applying our method to compute symmetry groups of 3d N=4 theories corresponding to magnetic quivers of 4d Class S theories and 5d SCFTs. We are able to match these results against the flavor symmetry groups of the 4d and 5d theories computed using independent methods. Another strong consistency check is provided by comparing symmetry groups and anomalies of two theories related by 3d mirror symmetry.

Abstract:We determine the dimensional topological field theory, which encodes the higher-form symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies for d -dimensional QFTs obtained by compactifying M-theory on a non-compact space X . The resulting theory, which we call the Symmetry TFT, or SymTFT for short, is derived by reducing the topological sector of 11d supergravity on the boundary of the space X . Central to this endeavour is a reformulation of supergravity in terms of differential cohomology, which allows the inclusion of torsion in cohomology of the space , which in turn gives rise to the background fields for discrete (in particular higher-form) symmetries. We apply this framework to 7d super-Yang Mills, where , as well as the Sasaki–Einstein links of Calabi–Yau three-fold cones that give rise to 5d superconformal field theories. This M-theory analysis is complemented with a IIB 5-brane web approach, where we derive the SymTFTs from the asymptotics of the 5-brane webs. Our methods apply to both Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian theories, and allow for many generalisations.

Abstract:Building on work by Hang and He, we show how the residual five-dimensional diffeomorphism symmetries of compactified gravitational theories with a warped extra dimension imply Equivalence theorems which ensure that the scattering amplitudes of helicity-0 and helicity-1 spin-2 Kaluza-Klein states equal (to leading order in scattering energy) those of the corresponding Goldstone bosons present in the `t-Hooft-Feynman gauge. We derive a set of Ward identities that lead to a transparent power-counting of the scattering amplitudes involving spin-2 Kaluza-Klein states. We explicitly calculate these amplitudes in terms of the Goldstone bosons in the Randall-Sundrum model, check the correspondence to previous unitary-gauge computations, and demonstrate the efficacy of `t-Hooft-Feynman gauge for accurately computing amplitudes for scattering of the spin-2 states both among themselves and with matter. Power-counting for the Goldstone boson interactions establishes that the scattering amplitudes grow no faster than $O(s)$, explaining the origin of the behavior previously shown to arise from intricate cancellations between different contributions to these scattering amplitudes in unitary gauge. We describe how our results apply to more general warped geometries, including models with a stabilized extra dimension. In an appendix we explicitly identify the symmetry algebra of the residual 5D diffeomorphisms of a Randall-Sundrum extra-dimensional theory.

On infinite symmetry algebras in Yang-Mills theory

Abstract:Similar to gravity, an infinite tower of symmetries generated by higher-spin charges has been identified in Yang-Mills theory by studying collinear limits or celestial operator products of gluons. This work aims to recover this loop symmetry in terms of charge aspects constructed on the gluonic Fock space. We propose an explicit construction for these higher spin charge aspects as operators which are polynomial in the gluonic annihilation and creation operators. The core of the paper consists of a proof that the charges we propose form a closed loop algebra to quadratic order. This closure involves using the commutator of the cubic order expansion of the charges with the linear (soft) charge. Quite remarkably, this shows that this infinite-dimensional symmetry constrains the non-linear structure of Yang-Mills theory. We provide a similar all spin proof in gravity for the so-called global quadratic (hard) charges which form the loop wedge subalgebra of $w_{1+\infty}$.

Matter from multiply enhanced singularities in F-theory

Abstract:We investigate the geometrical structure of multiply enhanced codimension-two singularities in the $SU(5)$ model of six-dimensional F-theory, where the rank of the singularity increases by two or more. We perform blow-up processes for the enhancement $SU(5)\rightarrow G'$, where $G'=E_6$, $E_7$ or $E_8$, to examine whether a sufficient set of exceptional curves emerge that can explain the charged matter generation predicted from anomaly cancelation. We first apply one of the six Esole-Yau small resolutions to the multiply enhanced singularities, but it turns out that the proper transform of the threefold equation does not reflect changes in the singularity or how the generic codimension-two singularities gather there. We then use a(n) (apparently) different way of small resolutions than Esole-Yau to find that, except for the cases of $G'= E_6$ and special cases of $E_7$, either (1) the resolution only yields exceptional curves that are insufficient to cancel the anomaly, or (2) there arises a type of singularity that is neither a conifold nor a generalized conifold singularity. Finally, we revisit the Esole-Yau small resolution and show that the change of the way of small resolutions amounts to simply exchanging the proper transform and the constraint condition, and under this exchange the two ways of small resolutions are completely equivalent.

Exceptional symmetries in light-cone superspace

Abstract:We construct maximal supergravity in five-dimensions by 'oxidizing' the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory. The relevant symmetries, the unitary symplectic group $USp(8)$ and the exceptional group $E_6$, are both presented in light-cone superspace and their connections with $SU(8)$ and $E_7$ highlighted. We explain a procedure to derive higher-point interaction vertices in both the 4- and 5-dimensional supergravity theories using exclusively the exceptional symmetries. Specific forms for the quartic and quintic interaction vertices in light-cone superspace are derived.

Original $\mathbb F_1$ in emergent spacetime

Abstract:The existence of a quantum field theory over the "field with one element" was first addressed in 2012 by Bejleri and Marcolli, where it was shown that wonderful compactifications of the graph configuration spaces that appear in the calculation of Feynman integrals, as well as the moduli spaces of curves, admit an $\mathbb F_1$ structure. Recently, we also examined some advantages of studying finite fields $\mathbb F_q$, wherein $\mathbb F_1$ represents the fundamental string with the Planck length, playing a fundamental role in the model. Such a role was briefly described by comparing the similarity between the collapse of the spacetime concept probing the scales below the Planck length and the mathematical collapse of the 'field' concept at $q=1$. In this letter, we elaborate more on this role by explaining how Kapranov and Smirnov's perspective based on the Iwasawa theory is a perfect mathematical fit for string theory. Particularly, their work suggests that the existence of $\mathbb F_1$ alone is sufficient to create other fields $\mathbb F_q$ emergent as its extensions, reflecting the postulate of string theory, where various vibrational modes of the fundamental string manifest as other fields. As support, a couple of evidence are provided that illustrate the physical importance of the Weyl group (known to be a reductive group over $\mathbb F_1$) and explain why the calculation of the amplitudes in the "amplitudes=combinatorial geometry" program (initiated by Arkani-Hamed et al. in 2013) exhibits a combinatorial nature and simplifies the exponentially growing ($\mathcal{O}(4^n)$) calculations of the Feynman diagrams to a polynomially growing order ($\mathcal{O}(n^2)$) in the kinematic space of scattering data for the scalar theory with cubic interactions.

Abstract:For a fermionic quantum field theory in $d=1+1$ dimensions, there is a subtle difference between summing over spin structures and gauging $(-1)^F$. If the gravitational anomaly vanishes mod 16, then both operations are equivalent and yield a bosonic theory. But if the gravitational anomaly only vanishes mod 8, then only gauging $(-1)^F$ is allowed, and the result is a fermionic theory. Our goal is to understand in detail how this happens, despite the fact $(-1)^F$ is defined in terms of shifting the spin structure, which would naïvely suggest that both operations are equivalent. We do this from three perspectives: an abstract view in terms of anomalies, explicit CFT calculations, and a Symmetry TFT perspective. To conclude, we illustrate our results using the heterotic string and the famous self-triality of 8 Majorana-Weyl fermions.
