Abstract:Generalized global symmetries are a common feature of many quantum field theories decoupled from gravity. By contrast, in quantum gravity/the Swampland program, it is widely expected that all global symmetries are either gauged or broken, and this breaking is in turn related to the expected completeness of the spectrum of charged states in quantum gravity. We investigate the fate of such symmetries in the context of 7D and 5D vacua realized by compact Calabi-Yau spaces with localized singularities in M theory. We explicitly show how gravitational backgrounds support additional dynamical degrees of freedom which trivialize (i.e., "break") the higher symmetries of the local geometric models. Local compatibility conditions across these different sectors lead to gluing conditions for gauging higher-form and (in the 5D case) higher-group symmetries. This also leads to a preferred global structure of the gauge group and higher-form gauge symmetries. In cases based on a genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau space, we also get an F-theory model in one higher dimension with corresponding constraints on the global form of the gauge group. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.026012 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The core problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the fate of generalized global symmetries in the context of quantum gravity. Specifically, the paper explores the behavior of these symmetries in the 7 - and 5 - dimensional vacuum states achieved by compactifying Calabi - Yau spaces in M - theory. The following is a detailed description of the problem: ### Research Background 1. **The Importance of Global Symmetries in Quantum Field Theory** - Global symmetries play an important role in quantum field theory (QFT). They constrain correlation functions and provide insights into non - perturbative phenomena through their anomalies. 2. **Symmetry Problems in Quantum Gravity** - In the context of quantum gravity, all global symmetries are expected to be either gauged or explicitly broken. This breaking is related to the completeness of the spectrum of charged states in quantum gravity. ### Main Objectives of the Paper - **Study the Fate of Generalized Global Symmetries under the Influence of Gravity**: The paper aims to explore how these symmetries change after the introduction of gravitational effects, especially in the 7 - and 5 - dimensional vacuum states achieved by compactifying Calabi - Yau spaces in M - theory. ### Specific Research Contents 1. **Symmetries in 7 - and 5 - dimensional Vacuum States** - The author studies the behavior of generalized global symmetries in the 7 - and 5 - dimensional vacuum states achieved by compactifying Calabi - Yau spaces with local singularities in M - theory. - It is clearly shown how the gravitational background supports additional degrees of freedom in dynamics, thus trivializing the higher - order symmetries in local geometric models. 2. **Local Compatibility Conditions** - The local compatibility conditions between different regions lead to the gluing conditions of higher - form and higher - group symmetries, which further determine the global structure of the gauge group. 3. **F - theory Model** - For the case of Calabi - Yau spaces based on genus - one fibrations, a higher - dimensional F - theory model can also be obtained, which correspondingly constrains the global form of the gauge group. ### Conclusion - Through specific M - theory compactification models, this paper shows how gravity affects generalized global symmetries and proposes specific mechanisms for the changes of these symmetries in the presence of gravity. ### Mathematical Formula Representation For example, when discussing 7 - dimensional supersymmetric Yang - Mills theory, the Lie algebra \( \mathfrak{g}_{ADE} \) involved can be represented by the following formula: \[ \mathfrak{g}_{ADE} = \text{Lie algebra of ADE type} \] For the defect group \( D \), it can be represented as: \[ D=\bigoplus_{m} D^{(m)} \] where \( m \) represents the dimension of the brane world - volume in spacetime, that is, the dimension of the defect. In this way, the paper systematically explores the behavior of generalized global symmetries in the context of quantum gravity, providing a new perspective for understanding symmetry problems in quantum gravity.
