Abstract:We construct Rankin-Cohen type differential operators on Hermitian modular forms of signature $(n,n)$. The bilinear differential operators given here specialize to the original Rankin-Cohen operators in the case $n=1$, and more generally satisfy some analogous properties, including uniqueness. Our approach builds on previous work by Eholzer-Ibukiyama in the case of Siegel modular forms, together with results of Kashiwara-Vergne on the representation theory of unitary groups.

Abstract:We generalize the linear relation formula between the square of normalized Hecke eigenforms of weight k k and normalized Hecke eigenforms of weight 2 k 2k , to Rankin-Cohen brackets of general degree. As an ingredient of the proof, we also generalize a formula of Zagier on the Petersson inner product of Rankin-Cohen brackets involving Eisenstein series.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the unitary representation theory of $SL_2(\mathbb R)$ to understand the Rankin-Cohen brackets for modular forms. Then we use this interpretation to study the corresponding deformation problems that Paula Cohen, Yuri Manin and Don Zagier initiated. Two uniqueness results are established.

Abstract:We show that modular forms of fractional weights on principal congruence subgroups of odd levels, which are found by T. Ibukiyama, naturally appear as characters being multiplied $\eta^{c_{\text{eff}}}$ of the so-called minimal models of type $(2, p)$, where $c_{\text{eff}}$ is the effective central charge of a minimal model. Using this fact and modular invariance property of the space of characters, we give a different proof of the result showned by Ibukiyama that is the explicit formula representing $\mathrm{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ on the space of the ibukiyama modular forms. We also find several pairs of spaces of the Ibukiyama modular forms on $\Gamma(m)$ and $\Gamma(n)$ with $m|n$ having the property that the former are included in the latter. Finally, we construct vector-valued modular forms of weight $k\in\frac{1}{5}\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$ starting from the Ibukiyama modular forms of weight $k\in\frac{1}{5}\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$ with some multiplier system by a symmetric tensor product of this representation and show that the components functions coincides with the solution space of some monic modular linear differential equation of weight $k$ and the order $1+5k$.

Abstract:Over any fixed totally real number field with narrow class number one, we prove that the Rankin–Cohen bracket of two Hecke eigenforms for the Hilbert modular group can only be a Hecke eigenform for dimension reasons, except for a couple of cases where the Rankin–Selberg method does not apply. We shall also prove a conjecture of Freitag on the volume of Hilbert modular groups, and assuming a conjecture of Freitag on the dimension of the cuspform space, we obtain a finiteness result on eigenform product identities.

Abstract:In the first part of the paper we characterize certain systems of first order nonlinear differential equations whose space of solutions is an $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$-module. We prove that such systems, called Ramanujan systems of Rankin-Cohen type, have a special shape and are precisely the ones whose solution space admits a Rankin-Cohen structure. In the second part of the paper we consider triangle groups $\Delta(n,m,\infty)$. By means of modular embeddings, we associate to every such group a number of systems of non linear ODEs whose solutions are algebraically independent twisted modular forms. In particular, all rational weight modular forms on $\Delta(n,m,\infty)$ are generated by the solutions of one such system (which is of Rankin-Cohen type). As a corollary we find new relations for the Gauss hypergeometric function evaluated at functions on the upper half-plane. To demonstrate the power of our approach in the non classical setting, we construct the space of integral weight twisted modular form on $\Delta(2,5,\infty)$ from solutions of systems of nonlinear ODEs.

Abstract:We study the relation between the Kaneko–Zagier equation and the Mathur–Mukhi–Sen classification, and extend it to the case of solutions with logarithmic terms, which correspond to pseudo-characters of non-rational vertex operator algebras. As an application, we prove a non-existence theorem of rational vertex operator algebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the theory of deformation quantization to understand Connes' and Moscovici's results [A. Connes, H. Moscovici, Rankin–Cohen brackets and the Hopf algebra of transverse geometry, Mosc. Math. J. 4 (1) (2004) 111–130, 311]. We use Fedosov's method of deformation quantization of symplectic manifolds to reconstruct Zagier's deformation [D. Zagier, Modular forms and differential operators, in: K.G. Ramanathan Memorial Issue, Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. Math. Sci. 104 (1) (1994) 57–75] of modular forms, and relate this deformation to the Weyl–Moyal product. We also show that the projective structure introduced by Connes and Moscovici is equivalent to the existence of certain geometric data in the case of foliation groupoids. Using the methods developed by the second author [X. Tang, Deformation quantization of pseudo (symplectic) Poisson groupoids, Geom. Funct. Anal. 16 (3) (2006) 731–766], we reconstruct a universal deformation formula of the Hopf algebra H1 associated to codimension one foliations. In the end, we prove that the first Rankin–Cohen bracket RC1 defines a noncommutative Poisson structure for an arbitrary H1 action.

Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic distribution of integrals of the $j$-function that are associated to ideal classes in a real quadratic field. To estimate the error term in our asymptotic formula, we prove a bound for sums of Kloosterman sums of half-integral weight that is uniform in every parameter. To establish this estimate we prove a variant of Kuznetsov's formula where the spectral data is restricted to half-integral weight forms in the Kohnen plus space, and we apply Young's hybrid subconvexity estimates for twisted modular $L$-functions.

On the intertwining differential operators from a line bundle to a vector bundle over the real projective space

Abstract:We classify and construct $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$-intertwining differential operators $\mathcal{D}$ from a line bundle to a vector bundle over the real projective space $\mathbb{RP}^{n-1}$ by the F-method. This generalizes a classical result of Bol for $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$. Further, we classify the $K$-type formulas for the kernel $\text{Ker}(\mathcal{D})$ and image $\text{Im}(\mathcal{D})$ of $\mathcal{D}$. The standardness of the homomorphisms $\varphi$ corresponding to the differential operators $\mathcal{D}$ between generalized Verma modules are also discussed.

Modular Differential Equations with Movable Poles and Admissible RCFT Characters

Abstract:Studies of modular linear differential equations (MLDE) for the classification of rational CFT characters have been limited to the case where the coefficient functions (in monic form) have no poles, or poles at special points of moduli space. Here we initiate an exploration of the vast territory of MLDEs with two characters and any number of poles at arbitrary points of moduli space. We show how to parametrise the most general equation precisely and count its parameters. Eliminating logarithmic singularities at all the poles provides constraint equations for the accessory parameters. By taking suitable limits, we find recursion relations between solutions for different numbers of poles. The cases of one and two movable poles are examined in detail and compared with predictions based on quasi-characters to find complete agreement. We also comment on the limit of coincident poles. Finally we show that there exist genuine CFT corresponding to many of the newly-studied cases. We emphasise that the modular data is an output, rather than an input, of our approach.

More Differential Operators on Almost Hermitian Manifolds

Abstract:In 1980 Michelsohn defined a differential operator on sections of the complex Clifford bundle over a compact Kähler manifold M . This operator is a differential and its Laplacian agrees with the Laplacian of the Dolbeault operator on forms through a natural identification of differential forms with sections of the Clifford bundle. Relaxing the condition that M be Kähler, we introduce two differential operators on sections of the complex Clifford bundle over a compact almost Hermitian manifold which naturally generalize the one introduced by Michelsohn. We show surprising Kähler-like symmetries of the kernel of the Laplacians of these operators in the almost Hermitian and almost Kähler settings, along with a correspondence of these operators to operators on forms which are of present interest in almost complex geometry.

Modular relations involving generalized digamma functions

Abstract:Generalized digamma functions $\psi_k(x)$, studied by Ramanujan, Deninger, Dilcher, Kanemitsu, Ishibashi etc., appear as the Laurent series coefficients of the zeta function associated to an indefinite quadratic form. In this paper, a modular relation of the form $F_k(\alpha)=F_k(1/\alpha)$ containing infinite series of $\psi_k(x)$, or, equivalently, between the generalized Stieltjes constants $\gamma_k(x)$, is obtained for any $k\in\mathbb{N}$. When $k=0$, it reduces to a famous transformation given on page $220$ of Ramanujan's Lost Notebook. For $k=1$, an integral containing Riemann's $\Xi$-function, and corresponding to the aforementioned modular relation, is also obtained along with its asymptotic expansions as $\alpha\to0$ and $\alpha\to\infty$. Carlitz-type and Guinand-type finite modular relations involving $\psi_j^{(m)}(x), 0\leq j\leq k, m\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\},$ are also derived, thereby extending previous results on the digamma function $\psi(x)$. The extension of Guinand's result for $\psi_j^{(m)}(x), m\geq2,$ involves an interesting combinatorial sum $h(r)$ over integer partitions of $2r$ into exactly $r$ parts. This sum plays a crucial role in an inversion formula needed for this extension. This formula has connection with the inversion formula for the inverse of a triangular Toeplitz matrix. The modular relation for $\psi_j'(x)$ is subtle and requires delicate analysis.
