Abstract:We consider dynamical systems arising from substitutions over a finite alphabet. We prove that such a system is linearly repetitive if and only if it is minimal. Based on this characterization we extend various results from primitive substitutions to minimal substitutions. This includes applications to random Schrödinger operators and to number theory.

Abstract:In the paper we study aperiodic substitutional dynamical systems arisen from non-primitive substitutions. We prove that the Vershik homeomorphism $\phi$ of a stationary ordered Bratteli diagram is homeomorphic to an aperiodic substitutional system if and only if no restriction of $\phi$ to a minimal component is homeomorphic to an odometer. We also show that every aperiodic substitutional system generated by a substitution with nesting property is homeomorphic to the Vershik map of a stationary ordered Bratteli diagram. It is proved that every aperiodic substitutional system is recognizable. The classes of $m$-primitive substitutions and associated to them derivative substitutions are studied. We discuss also the notion of expansiveness for Cantor dynamical systems of finite rank.

Abstract:We study substitutions on a countably infinite alphabet (without compactification) as Borel dynamical systems. We construct stationary and non-stationary generalized Bratteli-Vershik models for a class of such substitutions, known as left determined. In this setting of Borel dynamics, using a stationary generalized Bratteli-Vershik model, we provide a new and canonical construction of shift-invariant measures (both finite and infinite) for the associated class of subshifts.

Choice-free Dualities for Lattice Expansions: Application to Logics with a Negation Operator

Abstract:Constructive dualities have been recently proposed for some lattice based algebras and a related project has been outlined by Holliday and Bezhanishvili, aiming at obtaining "choice-free spatial dualities for other classes of algebras [$\ldots$], giving rise to choice-free completeness proofs for non-classical logics''. We present in this article a way to complete the Holliday-Bezhanishvili project (uniformly, for any normal lattice expansion) by recasting recent relational representation and duality results in a choice-free manner. These results have some affinity with the Moshier and Jipsen duality for bounded lattices with quasi-operators, except for aiming at representing operators by relations, extending the Jónsson-Tarski approach for BAOs, and Dunn's follow up approach for distributive gaggles, to contexts where distribution may not be assumed. To illustrate, we apply the framework to lattices (and their logics) with some form or other of a (quasi)complementation operator, obtaining canonical extensions in relational frames and choice-free dualities for lattices with a minimal, or a Galois quasi-complement, or involutive lattices, including De Morgan algebras, as well as Ortholattices and Boolean algebras, as special cases.

Separating the Expressive Power of Propositional Dynamic and Modal Fixpoint Logics

Abstract:We investigate the expressive power of the two main kinds of program logics for complex, non-regular program properties found in the literature: those extending propositional dynamic logic (PDL), and those extending the modal mu-calculus. This is inspired by the recent discovery of a decidable program logic called Visibly Pushdown Fixpoint Logic with Chop which extends both the modal mu-calculus and PDL over visibly pushdown languages, which, so far, constituted the ends of two pillars of decidable program logics. Here we show that this logic is not only more expressive than either of its two fragments, but in fact even more expressive than their union. Hence, the decidability border amongst program logics has been properly pushed up. We complete the picture by providing results separating all the PDL-based and modal fixpoint logics with regular, visibly pushdown and arbitrary context-free constructions.

Abstract:An important problem in the theory of finite dynamical systems is to link the structure of a system with its dynamics. This paper contains such a link for a family of nonlinear systems over the field with two elements. For systems that can be described by monomials (including Boolean AND systems), one can obtain information about the limit cycle structure from the structure of the monomials. In particular, the paper contains a sufficient condition for a monomial system to have only fixed points as limit cycles. This condition depends on the cycle structure of the dependency graph of the system and can be verified in polynomial time.

Dynamic Cantor Derivative Logic

Abstract:Topological semantics for modal logic based on the Cantor derivative operator gives rise to derivative logics, also referred to as $d$-logics. Unlike logics based on the topological closure operator, $d$-logics have not previously been studied in the framework of dynamical systems, which are pairs $(X,f)$ consisting of a topological space $X$ equipped with a continuous function $f\colon X\to X$. We introduce the logics $\bf{wK4C}$, $\bf{K4C}$ and $\bf{GLC}$ and show that they all have the finite Kripke model property and are sound and complete with respect to the $d$-semantics in this dynamical setting. In particular, we prove that $\bf{wK4C}$ is the $d$-logic of all dynamic topological systems, $\bf{K4C}$ is the $d$-logic of all $T_D$ dynamic topological systems, and $\bf{GLC}$ is the $d$-logic of all dynamic topological systems based on a scattered space. We also prove a general result for the case where $f$ is a homeomorphism, which in particular yields soundness and completeness for the corresponding systems $\bf{wK4H}$, $\bf{K4H}$ and $\bf{GLH}$. The main contribution of this work is the foundation of a general proof method for finite model property and completeness of dynamic topological $d$-logics. Furthermore, our result for $\bf{GLC}$ constitutes the first step towards a proof of completeness for the trimodal topo-temporal language with respect to a finite axiomatisation -- something known to be impossible over the class of all spaces.

Foundational Issues in Logical Dynamics.

Abstract:A healthy field combines two driving forces, extension of coverage and theoretical reflection – and modal logic is no exception. In this talk, we look at some broader theoretical issues raised by recent developments in dynamic logics of information flow, whose main technical feature is the modal study of definable model change. Our pilot system will be public announcement logic PAL, the base calculus of update with hard information. We identify several general themes behind the particulars of its design. These include model-theoretic issues like the balance of expressive power for the static and dynamic components of the language, and learnability results in the form of preservation theorems. But we also discuss PAL’s calculus of reasoning, via correspondence analysis of its axioms as constraints on update functions in domains of inquiry, showing how this leads to two recent extensions: protocol versions where no reduction to the static base language occurs, and substitution-closed core versions of the system. Both moves exemplify more general operations on modal logics. Next, we consider other dynamic-epistemic logics, and amplify on the above themes, while adding some new ones. First, we discuss event models and product update in DEL, a calculus of model construction that shows analogies with process algebra, but also with the epistemic μ–calculus. Then we turn to dynamic logics for belief change under incoming hard and soft information that upgrade plausibility relations without eliminating worlds. We discuss what logical format best captures the generality needed to avoid a jungle of revision policies. In this setting also, we look at the general phenomenon of defining new static modalities by dynamic considerations. While all this broadens our view of single-step model transformations, another conspicuous dimension in current research is the global temporal horizon of a process of inquiry, a conversation, or a game, adding procedural information to local updates. We discuss representation results linking local dynamic and global temporal logics, while also pointing at specific model-theoretic issues arising with concrete processes involving iterated hard or soft announcements, and their limit behavior. Here we link up with modal fixed-point logics, though the general situation is far from clear. As a very concrete instance of merging local and global perspectives, we discuss some recent links between dynamic epistemic logics and formal learning theory, where modal models acquire a new meaning as priors pre-encoding learning methods.
A Complete Uniform Substitution Calculus for Differential Dynamic Logic

Abstract:This article introduces a relatively complete proof calculus for differential dynamic logic (dL) that is entirely based on uniform substitution, a proof rule that substitutes a formula for a predicate symbol everywhere. Uniform substitutions make it possible to use axioms instead of axiom schemata, thereby substantially simplifying implementations. Instead of subtle schema variables and soundness-critical side conditions on the occurrence patterns of logical variables to restrict infinitely many axiom schema instances to sound ones, the resulting calculus adopts only a finite number of ordinary dL formulas as axioms, which uniform substitutions instantiate soundly. The static semantics of differential dynamic logic and the soundness-critical restrictions it imposes on proof steps is captured exclusively in uniform substitutions and variable renamings as opposed to being spread in delicate ways across the prover implementation. In addition to sound uniform substitutions, this article introduces differential forms for differential dynamic logic that make it possible to internalize differential invariants, differential substitutions, and derivatives as first-class axioms to reason about differential equations axiomatically. The resulting axiomatization of differential dynamic logic is proved to be sound and relatively complete.

Conditional symmetries and conditional constants of motion for dynamical systems

Abstract:Conditional symmetries were introduced by Levi and Winternitz in their 1989 seminal paper to deal with nonlinear PDEs. Here we discuss their application in the framework of ODEs, and more specifically Dynamical Systems; it turns out they are closely related to two established -- albeit maybe less widely known -- concepts, i.e. orbital symmetries and configurational invariants. The paper is devoted to studying the interplay of these notions, and their application in the study of Dynamical Systems, with special attention to invariant manifolds of these.

Propositional Logics for the Lawvere Quantale

Abstract:Lawvere showed that generalised metric spaces are categories enriched over $[0, \infty]$, the quantale of the positive extended reals. The statement of enrichment is a quantitative analogue of being a preorder. Towards seeking a logic for quantitative metric reasoning, we investigate three $[0,\infty]$-valued propositional logics over the Lawvere quantale. The basic logical connectives shared by all three logics are those that can be interpreted in any quantale, viz finite conjunctions and disjunctions, tensor (addition for the Lawvere quantale) and linear implication (here a truncated subtraction); to these we add, in turn, the constant $1$ to express integer values, and scalar multiplication by a non-negative real to express general affine combinations. Quantitative equational logic can be interpreted in the third logic if we allow inference systems instead of axiomatic systems. For each of these logics we develop a natural deduction system which we prove to be decidably complete w.r.t. the quantale-valued semantics. The heart of the completeness proof makes use of the Motzkin transposition theorem. Consistency is also decidable; the proof makes use of Fourier-Motzkin elimination of linear inequalities. Strong completeness does not hold in general, even (as is known) for theories over finitely-many propositional variables; indeed even an approximate form of strong completeness in the sense of Pavelka or Ben Yaacov -- provability up to arbitrary precision -- does not hold. However, we can show it for theories axiomatized by a (not necessarily finite) set of judgements in normal form over a finite set of propositional variables when we restrict to models that do not map variables to $\infty$; the proof uses Hurwicz's general form of the Farkas' Lemma.

Semantical Investigations on Non-classical Logics with Recovery Operators: Negation

Abstract:We investigate mathematical structures that provide natural semantics for families of (quantified) non-classical logics featuring special unary connectives, known as recovery operators, that allow us to 'recover' the properties of classical logic in a controlled manner. These structures are known as topological Boolean algebras, which are Boolean algebras extended with additional operations subject to specific conditions of a topological nature. In this study we focus on the paradigmatic case of negation. We demonstrate how these algebras are well-suited to provide a semantics for some families of paraconsistent Logics of Formal Inconsistency and paracomplete Logics of Formal Undeterminedness. These logics feature recovery operators used to earmark propositions that behave 'classically' when interacting with non-classical negations. Unlike traditional semantical investigations, which are carried out in natural language (extended with mathematical shorthand), our formal meta-language is a system of higher-order logic (HOL) for which automated reasoning tools exist. In our approach, topological Boolean algebras are encoded as algebras of sets via their Stone-type representation. We use our higher-order meta-logic to define and interrelate several transformations on unary set operations, which naturally give rise to a topological cube of opposition. Additionally, our approach enables a uniform characterization of propositional, first-order, and higher-order quantification, including restrictions to constant and varying domains. With this work, we aim to make a case for the utilization of automated theorem proving technology for conducting computer-supported research in non-classical logics. All the results presented in this paper have been formally verified, and in many cases obtained, using the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant.

Abstract:We characterize the canonical diagonal subalgebra of the C*-algebra associated with a generalized Boolean dynamical system. We also introduce a particular commutative subalgebra, which we call the abelian core, in our C*-algebra. We then establish a uniqueness theorem under the assumptions that B and L are countable, which says that a *-homomorphism of our C*-algebra is injective if and only if its restriction to the abelian core is injective.

Abstract:We find sufficient conditions for the singularity of a substitution $\mathbb{Z}$-action's spectrum, which generalize the conditions given in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.11287" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.11287">arXiv:2003.11287</a>, Theorem 2.4, and we also obtain a similar statement for a collection of substitution $\mathbb{R}$-actions, including the self-similar one. To achieve this, we first study the distribution of related toral endomorphism orbits. In particular, given a toral endomorphism and a vector $\mathbf{v}\in\mathbb{Q}^d$, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the orbit of $\omega\mathbf{v}$ to be uniformly distributed modulo $1$ for almost every $\omega\in\mathbb{R}$. We use our results to find new examples of singular substitution $\mathbb{Z}$- and $\mathbb{R}$-actions.

Abstract:We refine a model for linear logic based on two well-known ingredients: games and simulations. We have already shown that usual simulation relations form a sound notion of morphism between games; and that we can interpret all linear logic in this way. One particularly interesting point is that we interpret multiplicative connectives by synchronous operations on games. We refine this work by giving computational contents to our simulation relations. To achieve that, we need to restrict to intuitionistic linear logic. This allows to work in a constructive setting, thus keeping a computational content to the proofs. We then extend it by showing how to interpret some of the additional structure of the exponentials. To be more precise, we first give a denotational model for the typed lambda-calculus; and then give a denotational model for the differential lambda-calculus of Ehrhard and Regnier. Both this models are proved correct constructively.

Abstract:We consider a simple modal logic whose non-modal part has conjunction and disjunction as connectives and whose modalities come in adjoint pairs, but are not in general closure operators. Despite absence of negation and implication, and of axioms corresponding to the characteristic axioms of (e.g.) T, S4 and S5, such logics are useful, as shown in previous work by Baltag, Coecke and the first author, for encoding and reasoning about information and misinformation in multi-agent systems. For such a logic we present an algebraic semantics, using lattices with agent-indexed families of adjoint pairs of operators, and a cut-free sequent calculus. The calculus exploits operators on sequents, in the style of "nested" or "tree-sequent" calculi; cut-admissibility is shown by constructive syntactic methods. The applicability of the logic is illustrated by reasoning about the muddy children puzzle, for which the calculus is augmented with extra rules to express the facts of the muddy children scenario.

Exploring Non-Regular Extensions of Propositional Dynamic Logic with Description-Logics Features

Abstract:We investigate the impact of non-regular path expressions on the decidability of satisfiability checking and querying in description logics extending ALC. Our primary objects of interest are ALCreg and ALCvpl, the extensions of with path expressions employing, respectively, regular and visibly-pushdown languages. The first one, ALCreg, is a notational variant of the well-known Propositional Dynamic Logic of Fischer and Ladner. The second one, ALCvpl, was introduced and investigated by Loding and Serre in 2007. The logic ALCvpl generalises many known decidable non-regular extensions of ALCreg. We provide a series of undecidability results. First, we show that decidability of the concept satisfiability problem for ALCvpl is lost upon adding the seemingly innocent Self operator. Second, we establish undecidability for the concept satisfiability problem for ALCvpl extended with nominals. Interestingly, our undecidability proof relies only on one single non-regular (visibly-pushdown) language, namely on r#s# := { r^n s^n | n in N } for fixed role names r and s. Finally, in contrast to the classical database setting, we establish undecidability of query entailment for queries involving non-regular atoms from r#s#, already in the case of ALC-TBoxes.

Allegories of Symbolic Manipulations

Abstract:Moving from the mathematical theory of (abstract) syntax, we develop a general relational theory of symbolic manipulation parametric with respect to, and accounting for, general notions of syntax. We model syntax relying on categorical notions, such as free algebras and monads, and show that a general theory of symbolic manipulation in the style of rewriting systems can be obtained by extending such notions to an allegorical setting. This way, we obtain an augmented calculus of relations accounting for syntax-based rewriting. We witness the effectiveness of the relational approach by generalising and unifying milestones results in rewriting, such as the parallel moves and the Tait-Martin-Löf techniques.

Abstract:In recent research on nonmonotonic logic programming, repeatedly strong equivalence of logic programs P and Q has been considered, which holds if the programs P ∪ R and Q ∪ R have the same answer sets for any other program R . This property strengthens the equivalence of P and Q with respect to answer sets (which is the particular case for R =∅), and has its applications in program optimization, verification, and modular logic programming. In this article, we consider more liberal notions of strong equivalence, in which the actual form of R may be syntactically restricted. On the one hand, we consider uniform equivalence where R is a set of facts, rather than a set of rules. This notion, which is well-known in the area of deductive databases, is particularly useful for assessing whether programs P and Q are equivalent as components of a logic program which is modularly structured. On the other hand, we consider relativized notions of equivalence where R ranges over rules over a fixed alphabet, and thus generalize our results to relativized notions of strong and uniform equivalence. For all these notions, we consider disjunctive logic programs in the propositional (ground) case as well as some restricted classes, providing semantical characterizations and analyzing the computational complexity. Our results, which naturally extend to answer set semantics for programs with strong negation, complement the results on strong equivalence of logic programs and pave the way for optimizations in answer set solvers as a tool for input-based problem solving.
