Abstract:We present progress towards a unified framework enabling the simultaneous determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, deuteron, and nuclei up to lead $(^{208}\rm{Pb})$. Our approach is based on the integration of the fitting framework underlying the nNNPDF3.0 determination of nuclear PDFs into that adopted for the NNPDF4.0 global analysis of proton PDFs. Our work paves the way toward a full integrated global analysis of non-perturbative QCD -- a key ingredient for the exploitation of the scientific potential of present and future nuclear and particle physics facilities such as the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).

On the normalization of unintegrated parton densities

Abstract:Recently, the definitions of the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin-Watt (KMRW) unintegrated parton densities (UPDFs) have been discussed by several groups. In the first part of this manuscript, we remind the issues encountered with these definitions and discuss the proposed solutions. In our opinion, none of these solutions is fully satisfactory. We observe that these issues seem to be related to the normalization condition where the UPDFs are related to the collinear PDFs by an integration over transverse momentum cut off by the factorization scale. Then, we build a modified version of the angular-ordering KMRW UPDFs, obeying the normalization condition with the transverse momentum integrated up to infinity and show that the usual issues are absent.

Abstract:Without proper control of numerical and methodological errors in theoretical predictions at the per mille level it is not possible to study the effect of input parameters in current hadron-collider measurements at the required precision. We present a new version of the parton-level code MCFM that achieves this requirement through its highly-parallelized nature, significant performance improvements and new features. An automatic differential cutoff extrapolation is introduced to assess the cutoff dependence of all results, thus ensuring their reliability and potentially improving fixed-cutoff results by an order of magnitude. The efficient differential study of PDF uncertainties and PDF set differences at NNLO, for multiple PDF sets simultaneously, is achieved by exploiting correlations. We use these improvements to study uncertainties and PDF sensitivity at NNLO, using 371 PDF set members. The work described here permits NNLO studies that were previously prohibitively expensive, and lays the groundwork necessary for a future implementation of NNLO calculations with a jet at Born level in MCFM.

Evolution of Parton Distribution Functions in the Short-Distance Factorization Scheme

Abstract:Lattice QCD offers the possibility of computing parton distributions from first principles, although not in the usual $\overline{MS}$ factorization scheme. We study in this paper the evolution of non-singlet parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the short-distance factorization scheme which notably arises in lattice calculations in the pseudo-distribution approach. We provide an assessment of non-perturbative evolution of PDFs from already published lattice matrix elements, and show how this evolution can be used to reduce the fluctuation of the lattice data. We compare our result with expectations obtained thanks to a perturbative matching to $\overline{MS}$. By highlighting the limitations of the current computations, we advocate for a new strategy using lattice calculations in small volume.

Abstract:We apply the joint threshold and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization theorem to introduce new threshold-TMD distribution functions, including threshold-TMD parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs). We apply Soft-Collinear Effective Theory and renormalization group methods to carry out QCD evolution for both threshold-TMD PDFs and FFs. We show the universality of threshold-TMD functions among three standard processes, i.e. the Drell-Yan production in $pp$ collisions, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and back-to-back two hadron production in $e^+e^-$ collisions. In the end, we present the numerical predictions for different threshold-TMD functions and also transverse momentum distributions at $pp$, $ep$, and $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Abstract:We present new parton distribution functions (PDFs) up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) from the CTEQ-TEA global analysis of quantum chromodynamics. These differ from previous CT PDFs in several respects, including the use of data from LHC experiments and the new D0 charged lepton rapidity asymmetry data, as well as the use of more flexible parametrization of PDFs that, in particular, allows a better fit to different combinations of quark flavors. Predictions for important LHC processes, especially Higgs boson production at 13 TeV, are presented. These CT14 PDFs include a central set and error sets in the Hessian representation. For completeness, we also present the CT14 PDFs determined at the leading order (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD. Besides these general-purpose PDF sets, we provide a series of (N)NLO sets with various $\alpha_s$ values and additional sets in general-mass variable flavor number (GM-VFN) schemes, to deal with heavy partons, with up to 3, 4, and 6 active flavors.

Collinear and TMD Quark and Gluon Densities from Parton Branching Solution of QCD Evolution Equations

Abstract:We study parton-branching solutions of QCD evolution equations and present a method to construct both collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities from this approach. We work with next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in the strong coupling. Using the unitarity picture in terms of resolvable and non-resolvable branchings, we analyze the role of the soft-gluon resolution scale in the evolution equations. For longitudinal momentum distributions, we find agreement of our numerical calculations with existing evolution programs at the level of better than 1 percent over a range of five orders of magnitude both in evolution scale and in longitudinal momentum fraction. We make predictions for the evolution of transverse momentum distributions. We perform fits to the high-precision deep inelastic scattering (DIS) structure function measurements, and we present a set of NLO TMD distributions based on the parton branching approach.

Abstract:Measurements of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) provide a powerful tool to probe the fundamental structure of protons and other nuclei. The DIS cross sections can be expressed in terms of structure functions which are conventionally expressed in terms of parton distribution functions (PDFs) that obey the DGLAP evolution equations. However, it is also possible to formulate the DGLAP evolution directly in terms of measurable DIS structure functions entirely sidestepping the need for introducing PDFs. We call this as the physical-basis approach. In a global analysis one would thereby directly parametrize the (observable) structure functions -- not the (unobservable) PDFs. Ideally, with data constraints at fixed $Q^2$, the initial condition for the evolution would be the same at each perturbative order (unlike for PDFs) and the approach thus provides a more clean test of the QCD dynamics. We first study a physical basis consisting of the structure functions $F_2$ and $F_{\rm L}$ in the fixed-flavour number scheme to the leading non-zero order in $\alpha_s$. We show how to express the quark singlet and gluon PDFs in terms of $F_2$ and $F_{\rm L}$ directly in momentum space which then leads to the DGLAP evolution of the structure functions $F_2$ and $F_{\rm L}$. In the second step we expand the physical basis to include six independent structure functions, which allows for a consistent global analysis. The steps towards NLO accuracy and the variable-flavour-number scheme are outlined. At NLO accuracy (when the scheme dependence of PDFs starts to play a part), we can take advatage of the physical basis and express e.g. the Drell-Yan cross sections at the LHC directly in terms of measurable DIS structure functions and thus without the scheme dependence.

How to fit PDFs in the presence of new physics?

Abstract:The interpretation of LHC data, and the assessment of possible hints of new physics, require the precise knowledge of the proton structure in terms of parton distribution functions (PDFs). I present a methodology designed to determine whether and how global PDF fits might inadvertently 'fit away' signs of new physics in the high-energy tails of the distributions. I showcase a scenario for the High-Luminosity LHC, in which the PDFs may completely absorb such signs of new physics, thus biasing theoretical predictions and interpretations. I discuss strategies to single out the effects in this scenario and disentangle the inconsistencies that stem from them. This study brings to light the synergy between the high luminosity programme at the LHC and present and future low-energy non-LHC measurements of large-sea quark distributions. I also present the potential of fitting simultaneously the PDFs and the new physics signals.

Nucleon pair parton distribution functions

Abstract:Parton distribution functions (PDFs) are important quantities in describing nucleon structures. They are universal and process-independent. As a matter of fact, nucleon PDFs are inevitably affected by nuclear matter during nuclear scattering process. In order to study the nuclear PDFs (nPDFs), in this paper, we introduce the nucleon pair PDFs (dPDFs) to describe parton distributions in the nucleon pair which is confined to a nucleus. We first of all construct the nuclear state in terms of nucleonic Fock states and calculate the operator definition of nPDFs. Neglecting the higher order corrections or nucleon correlations, we find that nPDFs can be written as a sum of two terms which respectively correspond to PDFs and dPDFs. Nucleon pair PDFs which stem from nucleon-nucleon correlation are proportional to common nucleon PDFs but suppressed by a factor. It is naturally to obtain the slope of the EMC effect $dR_{EMC}/dx$ as long as the factor is independent of momentum fraction $x$. We further calculate the Paschos-Wolfenstein ratio to study the nuclear matter effect on the extraction of weak mixing angle or $\sin^2\theta_W$ by using dPDFs.

Abstract:We review the current status of parton distribution function (PDF) determinations for unpolarized and longitudinally polarized protons and for unpolarized nuclei, which are probed by high-energy hadronic scattering in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We present the established theoretical framework, the experimental information, and the methodological aspects inherent to any modern PDF extraction. Furthermore, we summarize the present knowledge of PDFs and discuss their limitations in both accuracy and precision relevant to advancing our understanding of QCD proton substructure and pursuing our quest for precision in the Standard Model and beyond. In this respect, we highlight various achievements, discuss contemporary issues in PDF analyses, and outline future directions of progress.

Abstract:Parton distribution functions (PDFs) describe universal properties of bound states and allow us to calculate scattering amplitudes in processes with large momentum transfer. Calculating PDFs involves the evaluation of matrix elements with a Wilson line in a light-cone direction. In contrast to Monte Carlo methods in Euclidean spacetime, these matrix elements can be directly calculated in Minkowski-space using the Hamiltonian formalism. The necessary spatial- and time-evolution can be efficiently applied using established tensor network methods. We present PDFs in the Schwinger model calculated with matrix product states.

Understanding PDF Uncertainty in W Boson Mass Measurements

Abstract:We study the dependence of the transverse mass distribution of charged leptons and the missing energy on parton distributions(PDFs)adapted to W boson mass measurements at the CDF and ATLAS experiments.We compare the shape variations of the distribution induced by different PDFs and find that the spread of predictions from different PDF sets can be significantly larger than the PDF uncertainty predicted by a specific PDF set.We suggest analyzing the experimental data using up-to-date PDFs to gain a better understanding of the PDF uncertain-ties in W boson mass measurements.We also perform a series of Lagrange multiplier scans to identify the con-straints on the transverse mass distribution imposed by individual data sets in the CT18 global analysis.In the case of the CDF measurement,the distribution is mostly sensitive to d-quark PDFs in the intermediate x region,which are largely constrained by DIS and Drell-Yan data on deuteron targets and Tevatron lepton charge asymmetry data.

Abstract:We report on a new framework to parametrize parton distribution functions (PDFs) and other hadronic nonperturbative functions using polynomial functions realized by Bézier curves. Bézier parameterizations produce a stable fit with a low number of free parameters, while competing in performance with neural networks and offering explicit interpretation. We specifically apply this approach to determine PDFs in a pion, essential for understanding of nonperturbative QCD dynamics.

Abstract:A precise knowledge of the quark and gluon structure of the proton, encoded by the parton distribution functions (PDFs), is of paramount importance for the interpretation of high-energy processes at present and future lepton–hadron and hadron–hadron colliders. Motivated by recent progress in the PDF determinations carried out by the CT, MSHT, and NNPDF groups, we present an updated combination of global PDF fits: PDF4LHC21. It is based on the Monte Carlo combination of the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF3.1 sets followed by either its Hessian reduction or its replica compression. Extensive benchmark studies are carried out in order to disentangle the origin of the differences between the three global PDF sets. In particular, dedicated fits based on almost identical theory settings and input datasets are performed by the three groups, highlighting the role played by the respective fitting methodologies. We compare the new PDF4LHC21 combination with its predecessor, PDF4LHC15, demonstrating their good overall consistency and a modest reduction of PDF uncertainties for key LHC processes such as electroweak gauge boson production and Higgs boson production in gluon fusion. We study the phenomenological implications of PDF4LHC21 for a representative selection of inclusive, fiducial, and differential cross sections at the LHC. The PDF4LHC21 combination is made available via the LHAPDF library and provides a robust, user-friendly, and efficient method to estimate the PDF uncertainties associated to theoretical calculations for the upcoming Run III of the LHC and beyond.

Abstract:We present a detailed lattice QCD study of the unpolarized isovector quark parton distribution function (PDF) using a large-momentum effective theory framework. We choose a quasi-PDF defined by a spatial correlator which is free from mixing with other operators of the same dimension. In the lattice simulation, we use a Gaussian-momentum-smeared source at ${M}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}=356\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$ and ${P}_{z}\ensuremath{\in}{1.8,2.3}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$. To control the systematics associated with the excited states, we explore five different source-sink separations. The nonperturbative renormalization is conducted in a regularization-independent momentum subtraction scheme, and the matching between the renormalized quasi-PDF and $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ PDF is calculated based on perturbative QCD up to one-loop order. Systematic errors due to renormalization and perturbative matching are also analyzed in detail. Our results for light-cone PDF are in reasonable agreement with the latest phenomenological analysis.

Abstract:We provide an updated recommendation for the usage of sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the assessment of PDF and PDF+alpha(s) uncertainties suitable for applications at the LHC Run II. We review developments since the previous PDF4LHC recommendation, and discuss and compare the new generation of PDFs, which include substantial information from experimental data from the Run I of the LHC. We then propose a new prescription for the combination of a suitable subset of the available PDF sets, which is presented in terms of a single combined PDF set. We finally discuss tools which allow for the delivery of this combined set in terms of optimized sets of Hessian eigenvectors or Monte Carlo replicas, and their usage, and provide some examples of their application to LHC phenomenology. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Guido Altarelli (1941-2015), whose seminal work made possible the quantitative study of PDFs.
