Abstract: Let X be a complex, Gorenstein, Q-factorial, toric Fano variety. We prove two conjectures on the maximal Picard number of X in terms of its dimension and its pseudo-index, and characterize the boundary cases. Equivalently, we determine the maximal number of vertices of a simplicial reflexive polytope.

Abstract:The anticanonical complex is a combinatorial tool that was invented to extend the features of the Fano polytope from toric geometry to wider classes of varieties. In this note we show that the Gorenstein index of Fano varieties with torus action of complexity one (and even more general of the so-called general arrangement varieties) can be read off its anticanonical complex in terms of lattice distances in full analogy to the toric Fano polytope. As an application we give concrete bounds on the defining data of almost homogeneous Fano threefolds of Picard number one having a reductive automorphism group with two-dimensional maximal torus depending on their Gorenstein index.

Abstract:Let f : Y → X be a finite morphism between Fano manifolds Y and X such that the Fano index of X is greater than 1. On the one hand, when both X and Y are fourfolds of Picard number 1, we show that the degree of f is bounded in terms of X and Y unless X ≅ P 4 ; hence, such X does not admit any non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism. On the other hand, when X = Y is either a fourfold or a del Pezzo manifold, we prove that, if f is an int-amplified endomorphism, then X is toric. Moreover, we classify all the singular quadrics admitting non-isomorphic endomorphisms.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth Fano threefold over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Assume that $|-K_X|$ is very ample and each of the index and the Picard number is equal to one. We prove that $3 \leq g \leq 12$ and $g \neq 11$ for the genus $g$ of $X$. Moreover, we show that there exists no smooth curve on $X$ along which the blowup is Fano.

Abstract:For $n\geq 4$, let $X$ be a complex smooth Fano $n$-fold whose minimal anticanonical degree of non-free rational curves on $X$ is at least $n-2$. We classify extremal contractions of such varieties. As an application, we obtain a classification of Fano fourfolds with pseudoindex and Picard number greater than one. Combining this result with previous results, we complete the classification of smooth Fano $n$-folds with pseudoindex at least $n-2$ and Picard number greater than one. This can be seen as a generalization of various previous results. We also discuss the relations between pseudoindex and other invariants of Fano varieties.

Sharp bounds on the height of K-semistable Fano varieties I, the toric case

Abstract:Inspired by Fujita's algebro-geometric result that complex projective space has maximal degree among all K-semistable complex Fano varieties, we conjecture that the height of a K-semistable metrized arithmetic Fano variety X of relative dimension n is maximal when X is the projective space over the integers, endowed with the Fubini-Study metric. Our main result establishes the conjecture for the canonical integral model of a toric Fano variety when n is less than or equal to 6 (the extension to higher dimensions is conditioned on a conjectural "gap hypothesis" for the degree). Translated into toric Kähler geometry this result yields a sharp lower bound on a toric invariant introduced by Donaldson, defined as the minimum of the toric Mabuchi functional. We furthermore reformulate our conjecture as an optimal lower bound on Odaka's modular height. In any dimension n it is shown how to control the height of the canonical toric model X, with respect to the Kähler-Einstein metric, by the degree of X. In a sequel to this paper our height conjecture is established for any projective diagonal Fano hypersurface, by exploiting a more general logarithmic setup.

Abstract:A horospherical variety is a normal algebraic variety where a reductive algebraic group acts with an open orbit which is a torus bundle over a flag variety. For example, toric varieties and flag varieties are horospherical. In this paper, we classify Fano horospherical varieties in terms of certain rational polytopes that generalize the reflexive polytopes considered by V. Batyrev. Then, we obtain an upper bound on the degree of smooth Fano horospherical varieties, analogus to that given by O. Debarre in the toric case. We extend a recent result of C. Casagrande: the Picard number of any Fano Q-factorial horospherical variety is bounded by twice the dimension.

Abstract:We study various geometrical quantities for Calabi–Yau varieties realized as cones over Gorenstein Fano varieties, obtained as toric varieties from reflexive polytopes in various dimensions. Focus is made on reflexive polytopes up to dimension 4 and the minimized volumes of the Sasaki–Einstein base of the corresponding Calabi–Yau cone are calculated. By doing so, we conjecture new bounds for the Sasaki–Einstein volume with respect to various topological quantities of the corresponding toric varieties. We give interpretations about these volume bounds in the context of associated field theories via the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Abstract:Futaki invariants of the classical moduli space of 4d N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories determine whether they have a conformal fixed point in the IR. We systematically compute the Futaki invariants for a large family of 4d N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories coming from D3-branes probing Calabi-Yau 3-fold singularities whose bases are Gorenstein Fano surfaces. In particular, we focus on the toric case where the Fano surfaces are given by the 16 reflexive convex polygons and the moduli spaces are given by the corresponding toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We study the distribution of and conjecture new bounds on the Futaki invariants with respect to various topological and geometric quantities. These include the minimum volume of the Sasaki-Einstein base manifolds as well as the Chern and Euler numbers of the toric Fano surfaces. Even though the moduli spaces for the family of theories studied are known to be K-stable, our work sheds new light on how the topological and geometric quantities restrict the Futaki invariants for a plethora of moduli spaces.

Abstract:Fix two positive integers $d\geq3$ and $q$. We give an upper bound for anti-canonical volumes of $d$-dimensional $\frac{1}{q}$-lc toric Fano varieties, which corresponds to an upper bound for the dual normalized volumes of the associated $d$-dimensional $\frac{1}{q}$-lc Fano polytopes. And we also construct examples to show that these upper bounds are optimal. Besides, we provide an optimal upper bound for volumes of $d$-dimensional lattice simplices $S$ such that $\frac{1}{q}S$ has exactly one interior lattice point.

Abstract:This paper is a study of the polyhedral geometry of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns arising in the representation theory $\mathfrak{gl}_n \C$ and algebraic combinatorics. We present a combinatorial characterization of the vertices and a method to calculate the dimension of the lowest-dimensional face containing a given Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern. As an application, we disprove a conjecture of Berenstein and Kirillov about the integrality of all vertices of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes. We can construct for each $n\geq5$ a counterexample, with arbitrarily increasing denominators as $n$ grows, of a non-integral vertex. This is the first infinite family of non-integral polyhedra for which the Ehrhart counting function is still a polynomial. We also derive a bound on the denominators for the non-integral vertices when $n$ is fixed.

Cluster varieties and toric specializations of Fano varieties

Abstract:I state a conjecture asserting that for all generic klt Fano varieties X, there exists a generalised cluster variety U and a surjection from the set of torus charts on U to the set of toric specializations of X. I prove the conjecture in dimension 2 after work of Kasprzyk-Nill-Prince, Lutz, Hacking and Lai-Zhou. This confirms a deep and surprising structure to the classification of log del Pezzo surfaces first conjectured in work by Corti et al. In higher dimensions, I survey the evidence from the Fanosearch program, cluster structures for Grassmannians and flag varieties, and moduli spaces of conformal blocks. The paper is submitted for publication in a volume on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of V. V. Shokurov.

On the automorphism groups of smooth Fano threefolds

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a smooth Fano threefold over the complex numbers of Picard rank $1$ with finite automorphism group. We give numerical restrictions on the order of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{X})$ provided the genus $g(\mathcal{X})\leq 10$ and $\mathcal{X}$ is not an ordinary smooth Gushel-Mukai threefold. More precisely, we show that the order $|\mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{X})|$ divides a certain explicit number depending on the genus of $\mathcal{X}$. We use a classification of Fano threefolds in terms of complete intersections in homogeneous varieties and the previous paper of A. Gorinov and the author regarding the topology of spaces of regular sections.

Abstract:In this paper we define and investigate a class of polytopes which we call "vertex generated" consisting of polytopes which are the average of their $0$ and $n$ dimensional faces. We show many results regarding this class, among them: that the class contains all zonotopes, that it is dense in dimension $n=2$, that any polytope can be summed with a zonotope so that the sum is in this class, and that a strong form of the celebrated "Maurey Lemma" holds for polytopes in this class. We introduce for every polytope a parameter which measures how far it is from being vertex-generated, and show that when this parameter is small, strong covering properties hold.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a projective irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold. We associate with any big $\mathbf{R}$-divisor $D$ on $X$ a convex polygon $\Delta_E^{\mathrm{num}}(D)$ of dimension $2$, whose Euclidean volume is $\mathrm{vol}_{\mathbf{R}^2}(\Delta_E^{\mathrm{num}}(D))=q_X(P(D))/2$, where $E$ is any prime divisor on $X$, $q_X$ is the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki form and $P(D)$ is the positive part of the divisorial Zariski decomposition of $D$. We systematically study these polygons and observe that they behave like the Newton-Okounkov bodies of big divisors on smooth complex projective surfaces, with respect to a general admissible flag.

Abstract:We study genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants of Fano complete intersections in the projective spaces. Among other things, we show a reconstruction theorem for genus 1 invariants with only ambient insertions, and compute the genus 1 invariants with 1 marked point. For cubic hypersurfaces of dimension $\neq 4$ and odd dimensional intersections of two quadrics, we obtain a complete reconstruction theorem for genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants.
