Abstract:Factorization structures occur in toric differential and discrete geometry, and can be viewed in multiple ways, e.g., as objects determining substantial classes of explicit toric Sasaki and Kähler geometries, as special coordinates on such, or as an apex generalisation of cyclic polytopes featuring a generalised Gale's evenness condition. This article presents a comprehensive study of factorization structures. It establishes their structure theory and introduces their use in the geometry of cones and polytopes. The article explains the construction of polytopes and cones compatible with a given factorization structure, and exemplifies it for product Segre-Veronese and Veronese factorization structures, where the latter case includes cyclic polytopes. Further, it derives the generalised Gale's evenness condition for compatible cones, polytopes and their duals, and explicitly describes faces of these. Factorization structures naturally provide generalised Vandermonde identities, which relate normals of any compatible polytope, and which are used for Veronese factorization structure to find examples of Delzant and rational Delzant compatible polytopes. The article offers a myriad of factorization structure examples, which are later characterised to be precisely factorization structures with decomposable curves, and raises the question if these encompass all factorization structures, i.e., the existence of an indecomposable factorization curve.

Abstract:For any polynomial $P \in \mathbb{C}[X_1,X_2,...,X_n]$, we describe a $\mathbb{C}$-vector space $F(P)$ of solutions of a linear system of equations coming from some algebraic partial differential equations such that the dimension of $F(P)$ is the number of irreducible factors of $P$. Moreover, the knowledge of $F(P)$ gives a complete factorization of the polynomial $P$ by taking gcd's. This generalizes previous results by Ruppert and Gao in the case $n=2$.

Abstract:Given two convex polytopes, the join, the cartesian product and the direct sum of them are well understood. In this paper we extend these three kinds of products to abstract polytopes and introduce a new product, called the topological product, which also arises in a natural way. We show that these products have unique prime factorization theorems. We use this to compute the automorphism group of a product in terms of the automorphism groups of the factors and show that (non trivial) products are almost never regular or two-orbit polytopes. We finish the paper by studying the monodromy group of a product, show that such a group is always an extension of a symmetric group, and give some examples in which this extension splits.

Differential algebra of polytopes and inversion formulas

Abstract:We use the differential algebra of simple polytopes to explain the remarkable relation of the combinatorics of the associahedra and permutohedra with the compositional and multiplicative inversion of formal power series. This approach allows to single out the associahedra and permutohedra among all graph-associahedra and emphasizes the significance of the differential equations for polytopes derived earlier by one of the authors. We discuss also the link with the geometry of Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces $\bar M_{0,n}$ and provide a new interpretation of the combinatorics of cyclohedra in relation with the classical Faà di Bruno's formula.

Numerical invariants of normed matrix factorizations

Abstract:We define a normed matrix factorization category and a notion of bounding cochains for objects of this category. We classify bounding cochains up to gauge equivalence for spherical objects and use this classification to define numerical invariants. These invariants are expected to correspond under mirror symmetry to the open Gromov-Witten invariants with only boundary constraints of Lagrangian rational cohomology spheres defined by the second author and Tukachinsky. For each Delzant polytope, we construct a normed matrix factorization category. For Delzant polytopes satisfying a combinatorial relative spin condition, we construct an object of this category called the Dirac factorization. The Dirac factorization is expected to correspond under mirror symmetry to the Lagrangian submanifold given by the real locus of the toric symplectic manifold associated to the Delzant polytope. In the case of the $n$-simplex for $n$ odd, we show that the Dirac factorization is spherical, mirroring the fact that $\mathbb{R} P^n$ is a rational cohomology sphere. For $n = 1,$ we show the numerical invariants of the Dirac factorization coincide with the open Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{R} P^1 \subset \mathbb{C} P^1.$ For $n = 3$ in low degrees, computer calculations verify that the numerical invariants of the Dirac factorization coincide with the open Gromov-Witten-Welschinger invariants of $\mathbb{R}P^3 \subset \mathbb{C} P^3.$ Although $\mathbb{R} P^n$ is trivial in the Fukaya category of $\mathbb{C} P^n$ over any field of characteristic zero, the above results can be seen as a manifestation of mirror symmetry over a Novikov ring.

Veronese polytopes: Extending the framework of cyclic polytopes

Abstract:This article introduces the theory of Veronese polytopes, a broad generalisation of cyclic polytopes. These arise as convex hulls of points on curves with one or more connected components, obtained as the image of the rational normal curve in affine charts. We describe their facial structure by extending Gale's evenness condition, and provide a further combinatorial characterisation of facets via $\sigma$-parity alternating sequences. Notably, we establish a bijective correspondence between combinatorial types of Veronese polytopes and partitions of finite sets equipped with a cyclic order, called circular compositions. We show that, although the only Veronese $3$-polytopes are the cyclic $3$-polytopes and the octahedron, in general dimension they form a rich and diverse class including all combinatorial types of simplicial $d$-polytopes with at most $d+3$ vertices, the cross-polytope and particular stacked polytopes. In addition, we characterise which curves defining Veronese polytopes are $d$-order curves, and provide a closed formula for the number of facets of any Veronese polytope.

Abstract:Given a real closed polytope $P$, we first describe the Fourier transform of its indicator function by using iterations of Stokes' theorem. We then use the ensuing Fourier transform formulations, together with the Poisson summation formula, to give a new algorithm to count fractionally-weighted lattice points inside the one-parameter family of all real dilates of $P$. The combinatorics of the face poset of $P$ plays a central role in the description of the Fourier transform of $P$. We also obtain a closed form for the codimension-1 coefficient that appears in an expansion of this sum in powers of the real dilation parameter $t$. This closed form generalizes some known results about the Macdonald solid-angle polynomial, which is the analogous expression traditionally obtained by requiring that $t$ assumes only integer values. Although most of the present methodology applies to all real polytopes, a particularly nice application is to the study of all real dilates of integer (and rational) polytopes.

Abstract:For any root system of rank $r$, we study the "dominant weight polytope" $P^\lambda$ associated with a strongly dominant weight $\lambda$. We prove that $P^\lambda$ is combinatorially equivalent to the $r$-dimensional cube. As an application, we give a new proof of the known formulas for Betti numbers of Peterson varieties in classical Lie types.

On factorization and vector bundles of conformal blocks from vertex algebras

Abstract:Representations of vertex operator algebras define sheaves of coinvariants and conformal blocks on moduli of stable pointed curves. Assuming certain finiteness and semisimplicity conditions, we prove that such sheaves satisfy the factorization conjecture and consequently are vector bundles. Factorization is essential to a recursive formulation of invariants, like ranks and Chern classes, and to produce new constructions of rational conformal field theories and cohomological field theories.

Abstract:New algorithms for prime factorization that outperform the existing ones or take advantage of particular properties of the prime factors can have a practical impact on present implementations of cryptographic algorithms that rely on the complexity of factorization. Currently used keys are chosen on the basis of the present algorithmic knowledge and, thus, can potentially be subject to future breaches. For this reason, it is worth to investigate new approaches which have the potentiality of giving a computational advantage. The problem has also relevance in quantum computation, as an efficient quantum algorithm for prime factorization already exists. Thus, better classical asymptotic complexity can provide a better understanding of the advantages offered by quantum computers. In this paper, we reduce the factorization problem to the search of points of parametrizable varieties, in particular curves, over finite fields. The varieties are required to have an arbitrarily large number of intersection points with some hypersurface over the base field. For a subexponential or poly- nomial factoring complexity, the number of parameters have to scale sublinearly in the space dimension n and the complexity of computing a point given the parameters has to be subexponential or polynomial, respectively. We outline a procedure for building these varieties, which is illustrated with two constructions. In one case, we show that there are varieties whose points can be evaluated efficiently given a number of parameters not greater than n/2. In the other case, the bound is dropped to n/3. Incidentally, the first construction resembles a kind of retro-causal model. Retro-causality is considered one possible explanation of quantum weirdness.

Abstract:Abstract We conduct a systematic study of the Ehrhart theory of certain slices of rectangular prisms. Our polytopes are generalizations of the hypersimplex and are contained in the larger class of polypositroids introduced by Lam and Postnikov; moreover, they coincide with polymatroids satisfying the strong exchange property up to an affinity. We give a combinatorial formula for all the Ehrhart coefficients in terms of the number of weighted permutations satisfying certain compatibility properties. This result proves that all these polytopes are Ehrhart positive. Additionally, via an extension of a result by Early and Kim, we give a combinatorial interpretation for all the coefficients of the $h^*$ -polynomial. All of our results provide a combinatorial understanding of the Hilbert functions and the h -vectors of all algebras of Veronese type, a problem that had remained elusive up to this point. A variety of applications are discussed, including expressions for the volumes of these slices of prisms as weighted combinations of Eulerian numbers; some extensions of Laplace’s result on the combinatorial interpretation of the volume of the hypersimplex; a multivariate generalization of the flag Eulerian numbers and refinements; and a short proof of the Ehrhart positivity of the independence polytope of all uniform matroids.

Abstract:We show that one can enumerate the vertices of the convex hull of integer points in polytopes whose constraint matrices have bounded and nonzero subdeterminants, in time polynomial in the dimension and encoding size of the polytope. This extends a previous result by Artmann et al. who showed that integer linear optimization in such polytopes can be done in polynomial time.

Motivated by an earlier result of Bugeaud and Nguyen, we let $E_{k,d}$ be the set of $(c_1,\ldots,c_k)\in\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}^k$ such that $\vert\alpha_0\vert\vert\alpha_1\vert^{c_1}\cdots\vert\alpha_k\vert^{c_k}\geq 1$ for any algebraic integer $\alpha$ of degree $d$, where we label its Galois conjugates as $\alpha_0,\ldots,\alpha_{d-1}$ with $\vert\alpha_0\vert\geq \vert\alpha_1\vert\geq\cdots \geq \vert\alpha_{d-1}\vert$. First, we give an explicit description of $E_{k,d}$ as a polytope with $2^k$ vertices. Then we prove that for $d>3k$, for every $(c_1,\ldots,c_k)\in E_{k,d}$ and for every $\alpha$ that is not a root of unity, the strict inequality $\vert\alpha_0\vert\vert\alpha_1\vert^{c_1}\cdots\vert\alpha_k\vert^{c_k}>1$ holds. We also provide a quantitative version of this inequality in terms of $d$ and the height of the minimal polynomial of $\alpha$.

Abstract:We develop vertex and factorisation algebra analogues of the theory of quasitriangular bialgebras. Analogously to the classical theory, we prove their categories of representations are controlled by spectral R-matrices. In the vertex algebra case this generalises previous notions due to Etingof-Kazhdan and Frenkel-Reshetikhin. Finally we give examples, including Borcherds twists and homology vertex algebras.

The topological Tverberg problem beyond prime powers

Abstract:Tverberg-type theory aims to establish sufficient conditions for a simplicial complex $\Sigma$ such that every continuous map $f\colon \Sigma \to \mathbb{R}^d$ maps $q$ points from pairwise disjoint faces to the same point in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Such results are plentiful for $q$ a power of a prime. However, for $q$ with at least two distinct prime divisors, results that guarantee the existence of $q$-fold points of coincidence are non-existent -- aside from immediate corollaries of the prime power case. Here we present a general method that yields such results beyond the case of prime powers. In particular, we prove previously conjectured upper bounds for the topological Tverberg problem for all $q$.

Improved Tverberg theorems for certain families of polytopes

Abstract:A theorem of Grünbaum, which states that every $m$-polytope is a refinement of an $m$-simplex, implies the following generalization of Tverberg's theorem: if $f$ is a linear function from an $m$-dimensional polytope $P$ to $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $m \ge (d + 1)(r - 1)$, then there are $r$ pairwise disjoint faces of $P$ whose images intersect. Moreover, the topological Tverberg theorem implies that this statement is true whenever the map $f$ is continuous and $r$ is a prime power. In this note, we show that for certain families of polytopes the lower bound on the dimension $m$ of the polytopes can be significantly improved, both in the affine and topological cases.

Abstract:Rectangulations are decompositions of a square into finitely many axis-aligned rectangles. We describe realizations of $(n-1)$-dimensional polytopes associated with two combinatorial families of rectangulations composed of $n$ rectangles. They are defined as quotientopes of natural lattice congruences on the weak Bruhat order on permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and their skeleta are flip graphs on rectangulations. We give simple vertex and facet descriptions of these polytopes, in particular elementary formulas for computing the coordinates of the vertex corresponding to each rectangulation, in the spirit of J.-L. Loday's realization of the associahedron.

On enumeration in classical invariant theory

Abstract:In this paper we study the Frobenius characters of the invariant subspaces of the tensor powers of a representation V. The main result is a formula for these characters for a polynomial functor of V involving the characters for V. The main application is to representations V for which these characters are known. The best understood case is for V the vector representation of a symplectic group or special linear group. Other cases where there are some related results are the defining representations of the symmetric groups and the adjoint representations of the general linear groups. This formula uses methods of enumerative combinatorics and in particular is similar to the cycle index series of regular graphs.

Abstract:For two types of moderate growth representations of $(\mathbb{R}^d,+)$ on sequentially complete locally convex Hausdorff spaces (including F-representations [J. Funct. Anal. 262 (2012), 667-681], we introduce Denjoy-Carleman classes of ultradifferentiable vectors and show a strong factorization theorem of Dixmier-Malliavin type for them. In particular, our factorization theorem solves [Conjecture 6.; J. Funct. Anal. 262 (2012), 667-681] for analytic vectors of representations of $G =(\mathbb{R}^d,+)$. As an application, we show that various convolution algebras and modules of ultradifferentiable functions satisfy the strong factorization property.

Abstract:The $f$-vector of a polytope consists of the numbers of its $i$-dimensional faces. An open field of study is the characterization of all possible $f$-vectors. It has been solved in three dimensions by Steinitz in the early 19th century. We state a related question, i.e. to characterize $f$-vectors of three dimensional polytopes respecting a symmetry, given by a finite group of matrices. We give a full answer for all three dimensional polytopes that are symmetric with respect to a finite rotation or rotary reflection group. We solve these cases constructively by developing tools that generalize Steinitz's approach.
