Abstract:Group classification of the three-dimensional equations describing flows of fluids with internal inertia, where the potential function $W= W(\rho,\dot{\rho})$, is presented. The given equations include such models as the non-linear one-velocity model of a bubbly fluid with incompressible liquid phase at small volume concentration of gas bubbles, and the dispersive shallow water model. These models are obtained for special types of the function $W(\rho,\dot{\rho})$. Group classification separates out the function $W(\rho,\dot{\rho})$ at 15 different cases. Another part of the manuscript is devoted to one class of partially invariant solutions. This solution is constructed on the base of all rotations. In the gas dynamics such class of solutions is called the Ovsyannikov vortex. Group classification of the system of equations for invariant functions is obtained. Complete analysis of invariant solutions for the special type of a potential function is given.

Geometric, Variational, and Bracket Descriptions of Fluid Motion with Open Boundaries

Abstract:We develop a Lie group geometric framework for the motion of fluids with permeable boundaries that extends Arnold's geometric description of fluid in closed domains. Our setting is based on the classical Hamilton principle applied to fluid trajectories, appropriately amended to incorporate bulk and boundary forces via a Lagrange-d'Alembert approach, and to take into account only the fluid particles present in the fluid domain at a given time. By applying a reduction by relabelling symmetries, we deduce a variational formulation in the Eulerian description that extends the Euler-Poincaré framework to open fluids. On the Hamiltonian side, our approach yields a bracket formulation that consistently extends the Lie-Poisson bracket of fluid dynamics and contains as a particular case a bulk+boundary bracket formulation proposed earlier. We illustrate the geometric framework with several examples, and also consider the extension of this setting to include multicomponent fluids, the consideration of general advected quantities, the analysis of higher-order fluids, and the incorporation of boundary stresses. Open fluids are found in a wide range of physical systems, including geophysical fluid dynamics, porous media, incompressible flow and magnetohydrodynamics. This new formulation permits a description based on geometric mechanics that can be applied to a broad class of models.

On Coherent Structures in Gas–solid Fluidization

Abstract:In this work, experimental data from the novel high speed particle image velocimetry (HSPIV) measurements and pressure fluctuations complemented by numerical predictions from TFM simulations are processed using advanced signal processing protocols to identify and characterize coherent structures in a gas–solid fluidized bed with Geldart D particles. The time-frequency properties of the bed dynamics were studied using the wavelet coherent analysis (WCA) and the Hilbert Huang transform. The WCA of numerical pressure drop signals at different measurement positions showed the existence of spatial-temporal coherent structures. At close measurement positions phase locked coherent phenomenon due to bubble generation dominate most of the frequency and time scales due the proximity to the distributor. At a wider measurement spacing the fast traveling waves are attenuated due to gas bubble/void coalescence and acceleration and only pockets of highly coherent oscillations are visible mostly in the frequency range of 0.5–3Hz at certain times. Multi-resolution of the particle fluctuations realized with the Hilbert–Huang transform. The structures were resolved into the micro, meso and macro scales of fluidization based on the energy and frequency distributions. The meso scale structures form the main contribution to the normal axial Reynolds stresses and bubble granular temperature and ultimately the mixing.

Abstract:A generalized coupled level set/volume-of-fluid/ghost fluid method for the detailed simulation of gas-liquid flows is proposed in this paper. The interface is captured by the coupled level set and volume-of-fluid method, where the level set method is used to compute normal vector and curvature accurately, and the volume-of-fluid method is used to conserve the global volume or mass. The ghost fluid method is also used for discretization across the interface. The novelty of the present approach lies in that a generalized formulation for the conversion between the level set function and the volume-of-fluid function is proposed in a simple and efficient manner. Three benchmarks, including Zalesak's disk, two-dimensional deformation and three-dimensional deformation, are used for validation and verification. It shows that excellent agreement is achieved, and the present method has first-order accuracy. The current method is further applied to the simulations of droplet dynamics, rising bubbles, head-on droplet collision and liquid jet breakup, demonstrating the capability to accurately capture the interface.

Abstract:The Euler equation of an ideal (i.e. inviscid incompressible) fluid can be regarded, following V.Arnold, as the geodesic flow of the right-invariant $L^2$-metric on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the flow domain. In this paper we describe the common origin and symmetry of generalized flows, multiphase fluids (homogenized vortex sheets), and conventional vortex sheets: they all correspond to geodesics on certain groupoids of multiphase diffeomorphisms. Furthermore, we prove that all these problems are Hamiltonian with respect to a Poisson structure on a dual Lie algebroid, generalizing the Hamiltonian property of the Euler equation on a Lie algebra dual.

Variable-moment fluid closures with Hamiltonian structure

Abstract:Based on ideas due to Scovel-Weinstein, I present a general framework for constructing fluid moment closures of the Vlasov-Poisson system that exactly preserve that system's Hamiltonian structure. Notably, the technique applies in any space dimension and produces closures involving arbitrarily-large finite collections of moments. After selecting a desired collection of moments, the Poisson bracket for the closure is uniquely determined. Therefore data-driven fluid closures can be constructed by adjusting the closure Hamiltonian for compatibility with kinetic simulations.

Abstract:Owing to three conditions (namely: (a) the velocity is represented by sum of irrotational and solenoidal components; (b) the fluid is barotropic; (c) a bath with the fluid undergoes vertical vibrations) the Navier-Stokes equation admits reduction to the modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The modification term is the Bohmian(quantum) potential. This reduction opens possibility to define a complex-valued function, named the wave function, which is a solution of the Schrödinger equation. The solenoidal component being added to the momentum operator poses itself as a vector potential by analogy with the magnetic vector potential. The vector potential is represented by the solenoidal velocity multiplied by mass of the fluid element. Vortex tubes, rings, and balls along with the wave function guiding these objects are solutions of this equation. Motion of the vortex balls along the Bohmian trajectories gives a model of droplets moving on the fluid surface. A peculiar fluid is the superfluid physical vacuum. It contains Bose particle-antiparticle pairs. Vortex lines presented by electron-positron pairs are main torque objects. Bundles of the vortex lines can transmit a torque from one rotating disk to other unmoved disk.

Abstract:The geometric nature of Euler fluids has been clearly identified and extensively studied over the years, culminating with Lagrangian and Hamiltonian descriptions of fluid dynamics where the configuration space is defined as the volume-preserving diffeomorphisms, and Kelvin's circulation theorem is viewed as a consequence of Noether's theorem associated with the particle relabeling symmetry of fluid mechanics. However computational approaches to fluid mechanics have been largely derived from a numerical-analytic point of view, and are rarely designed with structure preservation in mind, and often suffer from spurious numerical artifacts such as energy and circulation drift. In contrast, this paper geometrically derives discrete equations of motion for fluid dynamics from first principles in a purely Eulerian form. Our approach approximates the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms using a finite dimensional Lie group, and associated discrete Euler equations are derived from a variational principle with non-holonomic constraints. The resulting discrete equations of motion yield a structure-preserving time integrator with good long-term energy behavior and for which an exact discrete Kelvin's circulation theorem holds.

Abstract:A recent granular rheology based on an implicit `granular fluidity' field has been shown to quantitatively predict many nonlocal phenomena. However, the physical nature of the field has not been identified. Here, the granular fluidity is found to be a kinematic variable given by the velocity fluctuation and packing fraction. This is verified with many discrete element simulations, which show the operational fluidity definition, solutions of the fluidity model, and the proposed microscopic formula all agree. Kinetic theoretical and Eyring-like explanations shed insight into the obtained form.

Abstract:The vorticity-streamfunction formulation for incompressible inviscid fluids is the basis for many fluid simulation methods in computer graphics, including vortex methods, streamfunction solvers, spectral methods, and Monte Carlo methods. We point out that current setups in the vorticity-streamfunction formulation are insufficient at simulating fluids on general non-simply-connected domains. This issue is critical in practice, as obstacles, periodic boundaries, and nonzero genus can all make the fluid domain multiply connected. These scenarios introduce nontrivial cohomology components to the flow in the form of harmonic fields. The dynamics of these harmonic fields have been previously overlooked. In this paper, we derive the missing equations of motion for the fluid cohomology components. We elucidate the physical laws associated with the new equations, and show their importance in reproducing physically correct behaviors of fluid flows on domains with general topology.

Abstract:The equations of reversible (inviscid, adiabatic) fluid dynamics have a well-known variational formulation based on Hamilton's principle and the Lagrangian, to which is associated a Hamiltonian formulation that involves a Poisson bracket structure. These variational and bracket structures underlie many of the most basic principles that we know about geophysical fluid flows, such as conservation laws. However, real geophysical flows also include irreversible processes, such as viscous dissipation, heat conduction, diffusion and phase changes. Recent work has demonstrated that the variational formulation can be extended to include irreversible processes and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, through the new concept of thermodynamic displacement. By design, and in accordance with fundamental physical principles, the resulting equations automatically satisfy the first and second law of thermodynamics. Irreversible processes can also be incorporated into the bracket structure through the addition of a dissipation bracket. This gives what are known as the single and double generator bracket formulations, which are the natural generalizations of the Hamiltonian formulation to include irreversible dynamics. Here the variational formulation for irreversible processes is shown to underlie these bracket formulations for fully compressible, multicomponent, multiphase geophysical fluids with a single temperature and velocity. Many previous results in the literature are demonstrated to be special cases of this approach. Finally, some limitations of the current approach (especially with regards to precipitation and nonlocal processes such as convection) are discussed, and future directions of research to overcome them are outlined.

Abstract:Every fluid is a collection of groups of atoms and the behaviour of the constituent parts of these individual particles and their interactions has been described mathematically with a degree of success. We can imagine solving a fluid flow problem, in theory, by considering every individual particle and interaction in a system and solving the equations that govern them. These types of equations are very difficult and such systems have only been solved approximately for a small number of atoms. This atomic ‘bottom-up’ solution scheme is extremely difficult for most of the macroscopic flow problems of interest to the rheologist. Fortunately this presents no real obstacle as the position and motion of very particle in a fluid is of no concern to bulk measurement. Macroscopic phenomena such as flow rate or pressure distribution occur over length and time scales well in excess of the microscopic behaviour of a fluid e.g. the average polymer length or mean free flight time of a gas molecule. Consequently we are afforded the luxury of the continuum mechanics perspective. From this viewpoint, every fluid is seen as a continuous medium interacting with itself rather than as a collection of particles interacting with each other. The velocity and forces within a fluid are characterised by vector and tensor fields over a continuous domain rather than by assigning a velocity vector to a discrete number of particles and a force vector to bonds between particles.

Abstract:We consider a fermionic fluid in a non-equilibrium steady state where the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is not valid and fields conjugate to the hydrodynamic variables are explicitly required to determine response functions. We identify velocity-dependent forces in the kinetic equation that are equivalent to such fields. They lead to driving terms in the hydrodynamic equations and to corrections to the hydrodynamic initial conditions.

Abstract:It is shown that a hot relativistic fluid could be viewed as a collection of self-interacting quantum objects. They obey a nonlinear equation which is a modification of the quantum equation obeyed by elementary constituents of the fluid. A uniform phenomenological prescription, to affect the quantum transition from a corresponding classical system, is invoked to derive the nonlinear Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon, and Pauli-Schrödinger equations. It is expected that the created nonlinear quantum mechanics would advance, in a fundamental way, both the conceptual understanding and computational abilities, particularly, in the field of extremely high energy-density physics.

A Formulation of Quantum Fluid Mechanics and Trajectories

Abstract:A formalism of classical mechanics is given for time-dependent many-body states of quantum mechanics, describing both fluid flow and point mass trajectories. The familiar equations of energy, motion, and those of Lagrangian mechanics are obtained. An energy and continuity equation is demonstrated to be equivalent to the real and imaginary parts of the time dependent Schroedinger equation, respectively, where the Schroedinger equation is in density matrix form. For certain stationary states, using Lagrangian mechanics and a Hamiltonian function for quantum mechanics, equations for point-mass trajectories are obtained. For 1-body states and fluid flows, the energy equation and equations of motion are the Bernoulli and Euler equations of fluid mechanics, respectively. Generalizations of the energy and Euler equations are derived to obtain equations that are in the same form as they are in classical mechanics. The fluid flow type is compressible, inviscid, irrotational, with the nonclassical element of local variable mass. Over all space mass is conserved. The variable mass is a necessary condition for the fluid flow to agree with the zero orbital angular momentum for s states of hydrogen. Cross flows are examined, where velocity directions are changed without changing the kinetic energy. For one-electron atoms, the velocity modification gives closed orbits for trajectories, and mass conservation, vortexes, and density stratification for fluid flows. For many body states, Under certain conditions, and by hypotheses, Euler equations of orbital-flows are obtained. One-body Schroedinger equations that are a generalization of the Hartree-Fock equations are also obtained. These equations contain a quantum Coulomb's law, involving the 2-body pair function of reduced density matrix theory that replace the charge densities.

A crystallographic approach to symmetry-breaking in fluid layers

Abstract:Symmetry-breaking bifurcations, where a flow state with a certain symmetry undergoes a transition to state with a different symmetry, are ubiquitous in fluid mechanics. Much can be understood about the nature of these transitions from symmetry alone, using the theory of groups and their representations. Here we show how the extensive databases on groups in crystallography can be exploited to yield insights into fluid-dynamical problems. In particular, we demonstrate the application of the crystallographic layer groups to problems in fluid layers, using thermal convection as an example. Crystallographic notation provides a concise and unambiguous description of the symmetries involved, and we advocate its broader use by the fluid dynamics community.

A fluid description based on the Bernoulli equation of the one-body stationary states of quantum mechanics with real valued wavefunctions

Abstract:Abstract A formalism is developed, and applied, that describes a class of one-body quantum mechanical systems as fluids where each stationary state is a steady flow state. The time-independent Schrödinger equation for one-body stationary states with real-valued wavefunctions is shown to be equivalent to a compressible-flow generalization of the Bernoulli equation of fluid dynamics. The mass density, velocity and pressure are taken as functions that are determined by the probability density. The generalized Bernoulli equation describes compressible, irrotational, steady flow with variable mass and a constant specific total energy, i.e, a constant energy per mass for each fluid element. The generalized Bernoulli equation and a generalized continuity equation provide a fluid dynamic interpretation of a class of quantum mechanical stationary states that is an alternative to the unrealistic, static-fluid interpretation provided by the Madelung equations and quantum hydrodynamics. The total kinetic energy from the Bernoulli equation is shown to be equal to the expectation value of the kinetic energy, and the integrand of the expectation value of the kinetic energy is given an interpretation. It is also demonstrated that variable mass is necessary for a satisfactory fluid model of stationary states. However, over all space, the flows conserve mass, because the rate of mass creation from the sources are equal to the rate of mass annihilation from the sinks. The following flows are examined: the ground and first excited-states of a particle in a one-dimensional box, the harmonic oscillator, and the hydrogen s states.

Abstract:Use of curvilinear coordinates is sometimes indicated by the inherent geometry of a fluid dynamics problem, but this introduces fictitious forces into the momentum equations that spoil strict conservative form. If one is willing to work in three dimensions, these fictitious forces can be eliminated by solving for rectangular (Cartesian) momentum components on a curvilinear mesh. A thoroughly geometric approach to fluid dynamics on spacetime demonstrates this transparently, while also giving insight into a greater unity of the relativistic and nonrelativistic cases than is usually appreciated.

Abstract:Following the construction of a model for the planar supersymmetric Chaplygin gas, supersymmetric fluid mechanics in (1+1)-dimensions is obtained from the light-cone parametrized Nambu-Goto superstring in (2+1)-dimensions. The lineal model is completely integrable and can be formulated neatly using Riemann coordinates. Infinite towers of conserved charges and supercharges are exhibited. They form irreducible representations of a dynamical (hidden) SO(2,1) symmetry group.
