Abstract:Quantization of the electromagnetic field (called quantum electromagnetics here) has been a fascinating and important subject since its introduction by Dirac in 1927. However, this knowledge is often inaccessible to technologists such as engineers. This subject will be discussed in its simplest terms so that it can be easily understood by a larger community of researchers. To this end, a new way of motivating Hamiltonian mechanics is presented. Furthermore, a novel way of deriving the quantum equations of motion for electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations is presented.

Abstract:Recent studies of turbulence in superfluid Helium indicate that turbulence in quantum fluids obeys a Kolmogorov scaling law. Such a law was previously attributed to classical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations of motion. It is suggested that turbulence in all fluids is due to quantum fluid mechanical effects. Employing a field theoretical view of the fluid flow velocity, vorticity appears as quantum filamentary strings. This in turn leads directly to the Kolmogorov critical indices for the case of fully developed turbulence.

Abstract:It is known from quantum mechanics that particles are associated with wave functions, and that the probability of observing a particle at some future location is proportional to the squared modulus of the amplitude of its wave function. Although this statistical relationship is well quantified, the interpretations have remained controversial, with many split between the classical Copenhagen interpretation and some variation of the de Broglie-Bohm pilot wave models. Recent experiments with Hydrodynamic Quantum Analogs (HQAs) have demonstrated that droplets of real fluid may achieve stable dynamical states, where interaction of the droplets with their own ripples results in motion analogous to the motion of particles subject to the guiding equation under the pilot wave models. Indeed, many effects previously thought to be exclusively quantum have now been observed as emergent phenomena in these macroscopic HQAs. This has motivated us to explore the possibility that quantum mechanics may actually be the result of fluid dynamics on some real quantum scale fluid. In this paper, we show that if there is a real quantum scale fluid having dynamics analogous to the fluid in HQAs, then this fluid must be a superfluid, and the dynamics of that fluid must take place on the surface of a 4-dimensional hypersphere. Under the influence of cosmological inflation, we further show that these bouncing droplets would have the illusion of a property analogous to rest mass, and that the principles of inertia, momentum, mass-energy equivalence, general relativity, the uncertainty principle and the appearance of a time-like dimension can all be derived for droplets as purely emergent phenomena from the fluid dynamics of this system. As such, we believe that this model merits consideration as a potential foundation for a new unifying theory of physics at all scales.

Abstract:We review experimental and theoretical progress in the physical description of the dynamics of the quantum fluids \he4 and \he3. Historically, the elementary excitations in these systems have been identified as phonons and rotons and, in \he3, collective zero sound and spin-fluctuations. Both recent high-precision measurements and theoretical methods have shown that the dynamics of these systems is actually very rich as will be discussed in detail in the body of this contribution.

Abstract:For building up a theory of superfluid Helium-4, Lev Landau ingeniously unified the principles of quantum mechanics with the principles of hydrodynamics. By introducing a velocity operator he was able to derive a quantum analogue of the mass density flux equation and a quantum Euler equation. The article shows that it is possible to formulate a consistent quantum theory of the ideal liquid based on Landau's Quantum Hydrodynamics. This means that it is added the quantum analogue of the momentum density flux equation, the energy density flux equation, the entropy density flux equation, and a quantum vorticity equation. These are all manifestly in agreement with the classical limit of the flux equations of classical ideal liquids. It is also shown that the various aspects that have been criticised about Landau's Quantum Hydrodynamics - e.g. the application of the inverse of the mass density operator - are not justified. Such a consistent quantum theory of an ideal liquid may therefore provide a starting point of a complementary approach in the theoretical research of superfluid Helium 4.

A Formulation of Quantum Fluid Mechanics and Trajectories

Abstract:A formalism of classical mechanics is given for time-dependent many-body states of quantum mechanics, describing both fluid flow and point mass trajectories. The familiar equations of energy, motion, and those of Lagrangian mechanics are obtained. An energy and continuity equation is demonstrated to be equivalent to the real and imaginary parts of the time dependent Schroedinger equation, respectively, where the Schroedinger equation is in density matrix form. For certain stationary states, using Lagrangian mechanics and a Hamiltonian function for quantum mechanics, equations for point-mass trajectories are obtained. For 1-body states and fluid flows, the energy equation and equations of motion are the Bernoulli and Euler equations of fluid mechanics, respectively. Generalizations of the energy and Euler equations are derived to obtain equations that are in the same form as they are in classical mechanics. The fluid flow type is compressible, inviscid, irrotational, with the nonclassical element of local variable mass. Over all space mass is conserved. The variable mass is a necessary condition for the fluid flow to agree with the zero orbital angular momentum for s states of hydrogen. Cross flows are examined, where velocity directions are changed without changing the kinetic energy. For one-electron atoms, the velocity modification gives closed orbits for trajectories, and mass conservation, vortexes, and density stratification for fluid flows. For many body states, Under certain conditions, and by hypotheses, Euler equations of orbital-flows are obtained. One-body Schroedinger equations that are a generalization of the Hartree-Fock equations are also obtained. These equations contain a quantum Coulomb's law, involving the 2-body pair function of reduced density matrix theory that replace the charge densities.

A fluid description based on the Bernoulli equation of the one-body stationary states of quantum mechanics with real valued wavefunctions

Abstract:Abstract A formalism is developed, and applied, that describes a class of one-body quantum mechanical systems as fluids where each stationary state is a steady flow state. The time-independent Schrödinger equation for one-body stationary states with real-valued wavefunctions is shown to be equivalent to a compressible-flow generalization of the Bernoulli equation of fluid dynamics. The mass density, velocity and pressure are taken as functions that are determined by the probability density. The generalized Bernoulli equation describes compressible, irrotational, steady flow with variable mass and a constant specific total energy, i.e, a constant energy per mass for each fluid element. The generalized Bernoulli equation and a generalized continuity equation provide a fluid dynamic interpretation of a class of quantum mechanical stationary states that is an alternative to the unrealistic, static-fluid interpretation provided by the Madelung equations and quantum hydrodynamics. The total kinetic energy from the Bernoulli equation is shown to be equal to the expectation value of the kinetic energy, and the integrand of the expectation value of the kinetic energy is given an interpretation. It is also demonstrated that variable mass is necessary for a satisfactory fluid model of stationary states. However, over all space, the flows conserve mass, because the rate of mass creation from the sources are equal to the rate of mass annihilation from the sinks. The following flows are examined: the ground and first excited-states of a particle in a one-dimensional box, the harmonic oscillator, and the hydrogen s states.

Quantum vorticity: a not so effective field theory

Abstract:We provide a comprehensive picture for the formulation of the perfect fluid in the modern effective field theory formalism at both the classical and quantum level. Due to the necessity of decomposing the hydrodynamical variables $(\rho, p, u^\mu)$ into other internal degrees of freedom, the procedure is inherently not unique. We discuss and compare the different inequivalent formulations. These theories possess a peculiarity: the presence of an infinite dimensional symmetry implying a vanishing dispersion relation $\omega = 0$ for the transverse modes. This sets the stage for UV-IR mixing in the quantum theory, which we study in the different formulations focussing on the incompressible limit. We observe that the dispersion relation gets modified by quantum effects to become $\omega \propto \mathbf{k}^2$, where the fundamental excitations can be viewed as vortex-anti-vortex pairs. The spectrum exhibits infinitely many types of degenerate quanta. The unusual sensitivity to UV quantum fluctuations renders the implementation of the defining infinite symmetry somewhat subtle. However we present a lattice regularization that preserves a deformed version of such symmetry.

Abstract:Simulating fluid dynamics on a quantum computer is intrinsically difficult due to the nonlinear and non -Hamiltonian nature of the Navier-Stokes equation (NSE). We propose a framework for quantum computing of fluid dynamics based on the hydrodynamic Schrodinger equation (HSE), which can be promising in simulating three-dimensional turbulent flows in various engineering applications. The HSE is derived by generalizing the Madelung transform to compressible or incompressible flows with finite vorticity and dissipation. Since the HSE is expressed as a unitary operator on a two-component wave function, it is more suitable than the NSE for quantum computing. The flow governed by the HSE can resemble a turbulent flow consisting of tangled vortex tubes with the five-thirds scaling of energy spectrum. We develop a prediction-correction quantum algorithm to solve the HSE. This algorithm is implemented for simple flows on the quantum simulator Qiskit with partial exponential speedup.

Abstract:We study the interface dynamics in immiscible binary superfluids using its holographic description, which naturally consists of an inviscid superfluid component and a viscous normal fluid component. We give the first theoretical realization of interface instability for two superfluid components moving with identical velocity, providing a quantum analog to the flapping of flags that is common in daily life. This behavior is in sharp contrast to the one from Gross-Pitaevskii equation for which no such co-flow instability develops in an isolated uniform system because of Galilean invariance. The real time evolution triggered by the dynamical instability exhibits intricate nonlinear patterns leading to quantum turbulence reminiscent of the quantum Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Moreover, we show that such interface dynamics is essentially different from the Landau instability for which the frictionless flow becomes thermodynamically unstable above a critical superfluid velocity. Our study uncovers the rich interface dynamics of quantum fluids and the emergence of complex flow phenomena.

Abstract:We present a mapping between a Schrödinger equation with a shifted non-linear potential and the Navier-Stokes equation. Following a generalization of the Madelung transformations, we show that the inclusion of the Bohm quantum potential plus the laplacian of the phase field in the non-linear term leads to continuity and momentum equations for a dissipative incompressible Navier-Stokes fluid. An alternative solution, built using a complex quantum diffusion, is also discussed. The present models may capture dissipative effects in quantum fluids, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, as well as facilitate the formulation of quantum algorithms for classical dissipative fluids.

Complex fluid models of mixed quantum-classical dynamics

Abstract:Several methods in nonadiabatic molecular dynamics are based on Madelung's hydrodynamic description of nuclear motion, while the electronic component is treated as a finite-dimensional quantum system. In this context, the quantum potential leads to severe computational challenges and one often seeks to neglect its contribution, thereby approximating nuclear motion as classical. The resulting model couples classical hydrodynamics for the nuclei to the quantum motion of the electronic component, leading to the structure of a complex fluid system. This type of mixed quantum-classical fluid models have also appeared in solvation dynamics to describe the coupling between liquid solvents and the quantum solute molecule. While these approaches represent a promising direction, their mathematical structure requires a certain care. In some cases, challenging higher-order gradients make these equations hardly tractable. In other cases, these models are based on phase-space formulations that suffer from well-known consistency issues. Here, we present a new complex fluid system that resolves these difficulties. Unlike common approaches, the current system is obtained by applying the fluid closure at the level of the action principle of the original phase-space model. As a result, the system inherits a Hamiltonian structure and retains energy/momentum balance. After discussing some of its structural properties and dynamical invariants, we illustrate the model in the case of pure-dephasing dynamics. We conclude by presenting some invariant planar models.

Quantum-Fluid Correspondence in Relativistic Fluids with Spin: From Madelung Form to Gravitational Coupling

Abstract:This paper explores the quantum-fluid correspondence in a charged relativistic fluid with intrinsic spin. We begin by examining the nonrelativistic case, showing that the inclusion of spin introduces a quantum correction to the classical fluid energy. This correction, coupled with Maxwell's equations, naturally leads to the Schrödinger equation in Madelung form. Building on this foundation, we extend the formalism to a relativistic perfect fluid, identifying the system's stress-energy-momentum tensor. Our analysis reveals that the trace of the quantum correction to this tensor corresponds to the energy density of an oscillator, with its frequency determined by the vorticity of the spin motion. We then use the stress-energy-momentum tensor to establish the relationship between the Ricci scalar curvature, as dictated by the Einstein field equations, and the fluid density in a static, spherically symmetric configuration. Lastly, we generalize the Madelung transformation to compressible Navier-Stokes flows with vorticity and viscosity by developing a tailored Clebsch representation of the velocity field. This theoretical framework offers potential applications for studying fluid-like systems with internal rotational degrees of freedom, commonly encountered in astrophysical settings.

Abstract:It is reported that there exist deformable media which display quantum effects just as quantum entities do.As such,each quantum entity usually treated as a point particle may be represented by a deformable medium,the dynamic behavior of which is prescribed by four dynamic state variables,including mass density,velocity,internal pressure,and intrinsic angular momentum.In conjunction with the finding of the characteristic equation characterizing the physical nature of such media,it is found that a complex field quantity may be introduced to uncover a perhaps unexpected correlation,i.e.,the governing dynamic equations for such media may be exactly reduced to the Schr¨odinger equation,from which the closed-form solutions for all the four dynamic state variables can be obtained.It turns out that this complex field quantity is just the wavefunction in the Schr¨odinger equation.Moreover,the dynamic effects peculiar to spin are derivable as direct consequences.It appears that these results provide a missing link in quantum theory,in the sense of disclosing the physical origin and nature of both the wavefunction and the wave equation.Now,the inherent indeterminacy in quantum theory may be rendered irrelevant.The consequences are explained for certain long-standing fundamental issues.
Quantum Fluids in Thermodynamic Geometry

Abstract:In this work, the Thermodynamic Geometry (TG) of quantum fluids (QF) is analyzed. We present results for two models. The first one is a quantum hard-sphere fluid (QHS) whose Helmholtz free energy is obtained from Path Integrals Monte Carlo simulations (PIMC). It is found that due to quantum contributions in the thermodynamic potential, the anomaly found in TG for the classical hard-sphere fluid related to the sign of the scalar curvature, is now avoided in a considerable region of the thermodynamic space. The second model is a semi-classical square-well fluid (QSW), described by a quantum hard-sphere repulsive interaction coupled with a classical attractive square-well contribution. Behavior of the semi-classical curvature scalar as a function of the thermal de Broglie wavelength $\lambda_B$ is analyzed for several attractive-potential ranges, and description of the semi-classical R-Widom lines defined by the maxima of the curvature scalar, are also obtained and compared with classical results for different square-well ranges.

Abstract:It is shown that a hot relativistic fluid could be viewed as a collection of self-interacting quantum objects. They obey a nonlinear equation which is a modification of the quantum equation obeyed by elementary constituents of the fluid. A uniform phenomenological prescription, to affect the quantum transition from a corresponding classical system, is invoked to derive the nonlinear Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon, and Pauli-Schrödinger equations. It is expected that the created nonlinear quantum mechanics would advance, in a fundamental way, both the conceptual understanding and computational abilities, particularly, in the field of extremely high energy-density physics.
