Abstract: We carried out a Padé approximant analysis on a compact factor of the $T$-matrix for $NN$ scattering to explore the nonperturbative renormalization prescription in a universal manner. The utilities and virtues for this Padé analysis were discussed.

Abstract:The rigorous on-shell $T$-matrices for $NN$ scattering in the coupled channels $^3S_1$$-$$^3D_1$ are briefly presented in the context of EFT($\not\pi$) with the contact potentials truncated at order $\Delta=4$. The nonperturbative features of renormalization are highlighted and elaborated. A simple scenario for EFT power counting's and renormalization prescriptions is also presented with its consequences being roughly analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:The closed-form T matrices in the 3S1–3D1 channels of EFT(⁄π) for NN scattering with the potentials truncated at order O(Q4) are presented with the nonperturbative divergences parametrized in a general manner. The stringent constraints imposed by the closed form of the T matrices are exploited in the underlying theory perspective and turned into virtues in the implementation of subtractions and the manifestation of power counting rules in nonperturbative regimes, leading us to the concept of EFT scenario. A number of scenarios of the EFT description of NN scattering are compared with PSA data in terms of effective range expansion and 3S1 phase shifts, showing that it is favorable to proceed in a scenario with conventional EFT couplings and sophisticated renormalization in order to have large NN scattering lengths. The informative utilities of fine tuning are demonstrated in several examples and naturally interpreted in the underlying theory perspective. In addition, some of the approaches adopted in the recent literature are also addressed in the light of EFT scenario.

Abstract:The renormalization of the T matrix for NN scattering with a contact potential is reexamined in a nonperturbative regime through rigorous nonperturbative solutions. Based on the underlying theory, it is shown that the ultraviolet divergences in the nonperturbative solutions of the T matrix should be subtracted through "endogenous" counterterms, which in turn leads to a nontrivial prescription dependence. Moreover, employing the effective range expansion, the importance of imposing physical boundary conditions to remove the nontrivial prescription dependence, especially before making any physical claims, is discussed and highlighted. As by-products, some relations between the effective range expansion parameters are derived. We also discuss the power counting of the couplings for the nucleon-nucleon interactions and other subtle points related to the EFT framework beyond perturbative treatment.

Abstract:Within the realm of contact potentials, the key structures intrinsic of nonperturbative renormalization of $T$-matrices are unraveled using rigorous solutions and an inverse form of algebraic Lippmann-schwinger equation. The intrinsic mismatches between effective field theory power counting and nonperturbative divergence structures are shown for the first time to preclude the conventional counterterm algorithm from working in the renormalization of EFT for $NN$ scattering in nonperturbative regimes.

Abstract:In this contribution we present a status report on the recent progress towards an analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) using the NNPDF methodology. We discuss how the NNPDF fitting approach can be extended to account for the dependence on the atomic mass number $A$, and introduce novel algorithms to improve the training of the neural network parameters within the NNPDF framework. Finally, we present preliminary results of a nPDF fit to neutral current deep-inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering data, and demonstrate how one can validate the new fitting methodology by means of closure tests.

Abstract:We discuss the Padé approximation to the ππ scattering amplitudes in one-loop chiral perturbation theory.The approximation restores unitarity and can reproduce the correct resonance poles, but the approximation violates crossing symmetry and produces spurious poles on the complex s plane and therefore plagues its predictions in some cases.However we find that one virtual state in the IJ=20 channel may have physical relevance.

Abstract:The $NN$ scattering near inelastic threshold is sensitive to the long-range diagonal interaction in the produced isobar channel. Earlier models included meson exchange potentials in the $NN$ sector and connecting that sector to isobar channels, as well as an $R$-matrix description of short-range quark effects. Including the diagonal pion exchange contributions in the $N\Delta$ channels coupled to the very inelastic ${}^1D_2$ and ${}^3F_3$ $NN$ channels substantially improves those phase parameters and the observables $\Delta\sigma_{L}$ and $\Delta\sigma_{T}$. The same improvement is made to the other $I=1$ $NN$ channels. In the ${}^1S_0$ $NN$ channel coupling to the $\Delta\Delta$ channel is unusually important due to the $L=2$ angular momentum barrier in the $N\Delta$ channel. The pion exchange transition potentials between isobar channels are included in this partial wave to obtain the correct equilibrium between one- and two-pion decay channels. Other improvements to earlier models have been made, in the specification of isobar channels and the inclusion of decay width effects in more channels. A comparison is made with all the $pp$ data for $T_L \le 800$~MeV, producing a very good fit over the whole energy range.

Bayesian analysis of nucleon-nucleon scattering data in pionless effective field theory

Abstract:We perform Bayesian model calibration of two-nucleon ($NN$) low-energy constants (LECs) appearing in an $NN$ interaction based on pionless effective field theory (EFT). The calibration is carried out for potentials constructed using naive dimensional analysis in $NN$ relative momenta ($p$) up to next-to-leading order [NLO, $O(p^2)$] and next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order [N3LO, $O(p^4)$]. We consider two classes of pionless EFT potential: one that acts in all partial waves and another that is dominated by $s$-wave physics. The two classes produce broadly similar results for calibrations to $NN$ data up to $E_{\rm lab}=5$ MeV. Our analysis accounts for the correlated uncertainties that arise from the truncation of the pionless EFT. We simultaneously estimate both the EFT LECs and the parameters that quantify the truncation error. This permits the first quantitative estimates of the pionless EFT breakdown scale, $\Lambda_b$: the 95% intervals are $\Lambda_b \in [50.11,63.03]$ MeV at NLO and $\Lambda_b \in [72.27, 88.54]$ MeV at N3LO. Invoking naive dimensional analysis for the $NN$ potential, therefore, does not lead to consistent results across orders in pionless EFT. This exemplifies the possible use of Bayesian tools to identify inconsistencies in a proposed EFT power counting.

Abstract:A nonperturbative renormalization scheme for nucleon-nucleon interaction based on boundary conditions at short distances is presented and applied to the one pion exchange potential. It is free of off-shell ambiguities and ultraviolet divergences, provides finite results at any step of the calculation, and allows us to remove the short distance cutoff in a suitable way. Low energy constants and their nonperturbative evolution can be directly obtained from experimental threshold parameters in a completely unique and model independent way when the long range explicit pion effects are eliminated. This allows us to compute scattering phase shifts which are, by construction, consistent with the effective range expansion to a given order in the center of mass (c.m.) momentum p. In the singlet S-1(0) and triplet S-3(1)-D-3(1) channels ultraviolet fixed points and limit cycles are obtained, respectively, for the threshold parameters. Data are described satisfactorily up to c.m. momenta of about psimilar tom(pi).

Abstract:The renormalization of nucleon scattering is studied in nonperturbative regime. The failure of the conventional subtractive program in nonperturbative context is analyzed. The nontrivial relevance of renormalization prescriptions in calculating phase shift and the importance of physical boundary conditions in determining the choice of the prescriptions are discussed in the nonperturbative parametrization and illustrated with an example in the partial wave channel .

Abstract:Within the framework of chiral effective field theory, perturbative calculation for NN scattering is carried out in partial waves with orbital angular momentum L >= 1. The primary goal is to identify the lowest angular momenta at which perturbative treatment of chiral forces can apply. Results up to the order where the subleading two-pion exchange appears are shown. It is concluded that perturbation theory applies to all partial waves but S-1(0), S-3(1)-D-3(1), and P-3(0). Where it is applicable, perturbation theory with the delta-less chiral forces produces good agreement with the empirical phase shifts up to k(c.m.) similar or equal to 300 MeV.

Abstract:We analyze the renormalization of the NN interaction at low energies and the deuteron bound state through the Chiral Two Pion Exchange Potential assumed to be valid from zero to infinity. The short distance Van der Waals singularity structure of the potential as well as the requirement of orthogonality conditions on the wave functions determines that, after renormalization, in the 1S0 singlet channel and in the 3S1-3D1 triplet channel one can use the deuteron binding energy, the asymptotic D/S ratio and the S-wave scattering lengths as well as the chiral potential parameters as independent variables. We use then the asymptotic wave function normalization As of the deuteron and the singlet and triplet effective ranges to determine the chiral constants yielding c1, c3 and c4. The role of finite cut-off corrections, the loss of predictive power due to uncertainties in the input data and the connection to OPE distorted waves perturbative approaches is also discussed.

Abstract:We study elastic N$\alpha $ scattering and produce a quantitative correlation between the range of the effective potential and the energy of the system. This allows the identification of the waves and energies for which the scattering may be said to be peripheral. We then show that the corresponding phase shifts are sensitive to the tail of the NN potential, which is due to the exchange of two pions. However, the present uncertainties in the experimental phase shifts prevent the use of N$\alpha $ scattering to discriminate the existing models for the NN interaction.

A Unitarity Analysis on the I=0dwave Ππ Scattering Amplitude

Abstract:We study I=0 d wave ππ scattering phase shift using a proper unitarization approach. It is verified that the f_2(1270) resonance corresponds to a twin pole structure: one on the second sheet, another one on the third sheet. Also we find fair agreement on f_2(1270) pole's mass and width between our results and the PDG values. Besides, our analysis reveals the existence of a virtual state in this channel. Its pole location is determined by fitting experimental data and it is found to be in good agreement with the prediction from chiral perturbation theory. Our analysis demonstrates that partial wave amplitudes calculated in chiral perturbation theory are reliable in the small |s| region, contrary to some unitarization models.
Relativistic Chiral Description of the 1 S 0 Nucleon–Nucleon Scattering

Abstract:Recently, a relativistic chiral nucleon–nucleon interaction was formulated up to leading order, which provides a good description of the phase shifts of J ≤ 1 partial waves [Chin. Phys. C 42 (2018) 014103]. Nevertheless, a separable regulator function that is not manifestly covariant was used in solving the relativistic scattering equation. In the present work, we first explore a covariant and separable form factor to regularize the kernel potential and then apply it to study the simplest but most challenging 1 S 0 channel which features several low-energy scales. In addition to being self-consistent, we show that the resulting relativistic potential can describe quite well the unique features of the 1 S 0 channel at leading order, in particular the pole position of the virtual bound state and the zero amplitude at the scattering momentum ∼ 340 MeV, indicating that the relativistic formulation may be more natural from the viewpoint of effective field theories.

Abstract:We present a simple and physically compelling boundary condition regularization scheme in the framework of effective field theory as applied to nucleon–nucleon interaction. It is free of off-shell ambiguities and ultraviolet divergences and provides finite results at any step of the calculation. Low-energy constants and their non-perturbative evolution can directly be obtained from experimental threshold parameters in a completely unique, one-valued and model independent way when the long range explicit pion effects are removed. This allows to compute scattering phase shifts which are, by construction consistent with effective range expansion to a given order in the CM momentum and are free from finite cut-off artifacts.
