Abstract:We prove that the irreducible symmetric space of complex structures on $\mathbb R^{2n}$ (resp.\ quaternionic structures on $\mathbb C^{2n}$) is spectrally unique within a $2$-parameter (resp.\ $3$-parameter) family of homogeneous metrics on the underlying differentiable manifold. Such families are strong candidates to contain all homogeneous metrics admitted on the corresponding manifolds. The main tool in the proof is an explicit expression for the smallest positive eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated to each homogeneous metric involved. As a second consequence of this expression, we prove that any non-symmetric Einstein metric in the homogeneous families mentioned above are $\nu$-unstable.

Abstract:We show that quadratic and symmetric L-theory of the integers are related by Anderson duality and show that both spectra split integrally into the L-theory of the real numbers and a generalised Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum. As a consequence, we obtain a corresponding splitting of the space G/Top. Finally, we prove analogous results for the genuine L-spectra recently devised for the study of Grothendieck--Witt theory.

A note on the spaces of Eisenstein series on general congruence subgroups

Abstract:This article proposes a new approach to study the spectral Eisenstein series of weight $k$ on a congruence subgroup of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ using Hecke's theory of Eisenstein series for the principal congruence subgroups. Our method provides a gateway to analytic and arithmetic properties of the spectral Eisenstein series using corresponding results for the principal congruence subgroup. We show that the specializations of the weight $k$ spectral Eisenstein series at $s = 0$ give rise to a basis for the space of Eisenstein series on a general congruence subgroup. A variant of this construction provides an algorithmically computable basis with algebraic Fourier coefficients for the same space. Our philosophy also yields an explicit basis parameterized by cusps for the space of Eisenstein series with nebentypus. We use this basis to generalize Hida's Eichler-Shimura isomorphism theorem for modular forms with nebentypus to almost all nebentypus characters and levels.

Abstract:The study of spectral properties of natural geometric elliptic partial differential operators acting on smooth sections of vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds is a central theme in global analysis, differential geometry and mathematical physics. Instead of studying the spectrum of a differential operator $L$ directly one usually studies its spectral functions, that is, spectral traces of some functions of the operator, such as the spectral zeta function $\zeta(s)=\Tr L^{-s}$ and the heat trace $\Theta(t)=\Tr\exp(-tL)$. The kernel $U(t;x,x')$ of the heat semigroup $\exp(-tL)$, called the heat kernel, plays a major role in quantum field theory and quantum gravity, index theorems, non-commutative geometry, integrable systems and financial mathematics. We review some recent progress in the study of spectral asymptotics. We study more general spectral functions, such as $\Tr f(tL)$, that we call quantum heat traces. Also, we define new invariants of differential operators that depend not only on the their eigenvalues but also on the eigenfunctions, and, therefore, contain much more information about the geometry of the manifold. Furthermore, we study some new invariants, such as $\Tr\exp(-tL_+)\exp(-sL_-)$, that contain relative spectral information of two differential operators. Finally we show how the convolution of the semigroups of two different operators can be computed by using purely algebraic methods.

Abstract:Petrecca and Röser (Mathematische Zeitschrift 291:395–419, 2018) and Schueth (Ann Global Anal Geom 52:187–200, 2017) had shown that for a generic G -invariant metric g on certain compact homogeneous spaces (including symmetric spaces of rank 1 and some Lie groups), the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator was real G -simple. The same is not true for the complex version of when there is a presence of representations of complex or quaternionic type. We show that these types of representations induces a -action that commutes with the Laplacian in such way that G -properties of the real version of the operator have to be understood as -properties on its corresponding complex version.

Spectrum in alternative topological algebras and a new look at old theorems

Abstract:In this paper, we consider real and complex algebras as well as algebras over general fields. In Section 2, we revisit and prove several results on (quadratic) algebras over general fields. In Section 3, we show how to develop the spectral theory in the context of complex (resp. real) one-sided alternative topological algebras. As an application of the existence of spectrum, we prove the existence of nontrivial hyperinvariant linear manifolds for nonscalar (resp. nonquadratic) continuous linear operators acting on complex (resp. real) Fréchet spaces. Along the way, spectral theory is used to prove several topological counterparts of the well-known theorems of Frobenius, Hurwitz, Gelfand-Mazur, and Zorn. This is done, for example, in the context of left (resp. right) alternative topological algebras whose duals separate their elements. In Section 4, we consider real and complex algebras in various topological settings and reconsider and prove several results. For instance, it is shown that given a $ 1 < k \in \mathbb{N}$, on any locally complex algebra, there exists a unique nonzero vector space norm, say, $\|.\|$, satisfying the identity $\|a^k\| = \|a\|^k$ on the algebra. In Section 5, among other things, we revisit and slightly strengthen the celebrated theorems of Frobenius, Zorn, Gelfand-Mazur, and Hurwitz, and also give slight extensions of their topological counterparts, e.g., theorems of Albert, Kaplansky, and Urbanik-Wright to name a few, in several settings.

Abstract:The Ray-Singer isospectral theorem (1971) is applied to a general spectral function for Laplacians of twisted p-forms (say) on homogeneous Clifford-Klein factors of the three-sphere. The inducing formulae necessary to express any spectral quantity for any twisting in terms of those for cyclic subgroups of the tetrahedral, octahedral and icosahedral deck groups are detailed. Further, Artin's theorem allows the McKay correspondence to be obtained. The isospectral theorem is shown to yield a derivation of the Sunada construction which is equivalent to the later one by Pesce.

Abstract:In this paper a new class of isospectral graphs is presented. These graphs are isospectral with respect to both the normalized Laplacian on the discrete graph and the standard differential Laplacian on the corresponding metric graph. The new class of graphs is obtained by gluing together subgraphs with the Steklov maps possessing special properties. It turns out that isospectrality is related to the degeneracy of the Steklov eigenvalues.

Abstract:We study the p-independence of spectra of Laplace operators on graphs arising from regular Dirichlet forms on discrete spaces. Here, a sufficient criterion is given solely by a uniform subexponential growth condition. Moreover, under a mild assumption on the measure we show a one-sided spectral inclusion without any further assumptions. We study applications to normalized Laplacians including symmetries of the spectrum and a characterization for positivity of the Cheeger constant. Furthermore, we consider Laplacians on planar tessellations for which we relate the spectral p-independence to assumptions on the curvature.
On Infinitesimal $τ$-Isospectrality of Locally Symmetric Spaces

Abstract:Let $(\tau, V_{\tau})$ be a finite dimensional representation of a maximal compact subgroup $K$ of a connected non-compact semisimple Lie group $G$, and let $\Gamma$ be a uniform torsion-free lattice in $G$. We obtain an infinitesimal version of the celebrated Matsushima-Murakami formula, which relates the dimension of the space of automorphic forms associated to $\tau$ and multiplicities of irreducible $\tau^\vee$-spherical spectra in $L^2(\Gamma \backslash G)$. This result gives a promising tool to study the joint spectra of all central operators on the homogenous bundle associated to the locally symmetric space and hence its infinitesimal $\tau$-isospectrality. Along with this we prove that the almost equality of $\tau$-spherical spectra of two lattices assures the equality of their $\tau$-spherical spectra.

More precisely, with a view to the recurrence relations fulfilled by these orthogonal systems, we analyze a link of non-negative arithmetic to harmonic sequences as a main subject. Here, arithmetic sequences appear as coefficients of orthogonal polynomials and harmonic sequences as corresponding Szegő parameters.

Abstract:Let $X=G/H$ be a reductive homogeneous space with $H$ noncompact, endowed with a $G$-invariant pseudo-Riemannian structure. Let $L$ be a reductive subgroup of $G$ acting properly on $X$ and $\Gamma$ a torsion-free discrete subgroup of $L$. Under the assumption that the complexification $X_{\mathbb C}$ is $L_{\mathbb C}$-spherical, we prove an explicit correspondence between spectral analysis on the standard locally homogeneous space $X_{\Gamma}=\Gamma\backslash X$ and on $\Gamma\backslash L$ via branching laws for the restriction to $L$ of irreducible representations of $G$. In particular, we prove that the pseudo-Riemannian Laplacian on $X_{\Gamma}$ is essentially self-adjoint, and that it admits an infinite point spectrum when $X_{\Gamma}$ is compact or $\Gamma\subset L$ is arithmetic. The proof builds on structural results for invariant differential operators on spherical homogeneous spaces with overgroups.

Abstract:The action of the subgroup $\operatorname{G}_2$ of $\operatorname{SO}(7)$ (resp.\ $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$ of $\operatorname{SO}(8)$) on the Grassmannian space $M=\frac{\operatorname{SO}(7)}{\operatorname{SO}(5)\times\operatorname{SO}(2)}$ (resp.\ $M=\frac{\operatorname{SO}(8)}{\operatorname{SO}(5)\times\operatorname{SO}(3)}$) is still transitive. We prove that the spectrum (i.e.\ the collection of eigenvalues of its Laplace-Beltrami operator) of a symmetric metric $g_0$ on $M$ coincides with the spectrum of a $\operatorname{G}_2$-invariant (resp.\ $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$-invariant) metric $g$ on $M$ only if $g_0$ and $g$ are isometric. As a consequence, each non-flat compact irreducible symmetric space of non-group type is spectrally unique among the family of all currently known homogeneous metrics on its underlying differentiable manifold.

On Spectral Inclusion Sets and Computing the Spectra and Pseudospectra of Bounded Linear Operators

Abstract:In this paper we derive novel families of inclusion sets for the spectrum and pseudospectrum of large classes of bounded linear operators, and establish convergence of particular sequences of these inclusion sets to the spectrum or pseudospectrum, as appropriate. Our results apply, in particular, to bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space that, with respect to some orthonormal basis, have a representation as a bi-infinite matrix that is banded or band-dominated. More generally, our results apply in cases where the matrix entries themselves are bounded linear operators on some Banach space. In the scalar matrix entry case we show that our methods, given the input information we assume, lead to a sequence of approximations to the spectrum, each element of which can be computed in finitely many arithmetic operations, so that, with our assumed inputs, the problem of determining the spectrum of a band-dominated operator has solvability complexity index one, in the sense of Ben-Artzi et al. (C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 353 (2015), 931-936). As a concrete and substantial application, we apply our methods to the determination of the spectra of non-self-adjoint bi-infinite tridiagonal matrices that are pseudoergodic in the sense of Davies (Commun. Math. Phys. 216 (2001) 687-704).

Abstract:For a Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle over a Hermitian manifold, we consider the Dolbeault Laplacian with $\overline\partial$-Neumann boundary conditions, which is a self-adjoint operator on the space of square-integrable differential forms with values in the given holomorphic bundle. We argue that some known results on the spectral properties of this operator on pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb C^n$ continue to hold on K\"ahler manifolds satisfying certain bounded geometry assumptions. In particular, we will consider the Dolbeault complex for forms with values in a line bundle, where known results from magnetic Schr\"odinger operator theory can be applied.
Generic spectrum of the weighted Laplacian operator on Cayley graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the spectrum of a class of weighted Laplacians on Cayley graphs and determine under what conditions the corresponding eigenspaces are generically irreducible. Specifically, we analyze the spectrum on left-invariant Cayley graphs endowed with an invariant metric, and we give some criteria for generically irreducible eigenspaces. Additionally, we introduce an operator that is comparable to the Laplacian and show that the same criterion holds.
