Abstract: It is shown that even if the linear entropy of mixed two-qubit state is not smaller then 0.457, Bell - CHSH inequalities can be violated. This contradicts the result obtained in the paper of E. Santos [1].

Abstract:We derive entropic Bell inequalities from considering entropy Venn diagrams. These entropic inequalities, akin to the Braunstein-Caves inequalities, are violated for a quantum mechanical Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pair, which implies that the conditional entropies of Bell variables must be negative in this case. This suggests that the satisfaction of entropic Bell inequalities is equivalent to the non-negativity of conditional entropies as a necessary condition for separability.

Abstract:A. Peres constructed an example of particles entangled in the state of spin singlet. He claimed to have obtained the CHSH inequality and concluded that the violation of this inequality shows that in a measurement in which some variables are tested, other variables, not tested, have no defined value. In the present paper is proved that the correct conclusion of the violation of the CHSH inequality is different. It is proved that the classical calculus of probabilities of test results, obeying the Kolmogorov axioms, is unfit for the quantum formalism, dominated by probability amplitudes.

Abstract:We perform a detailed analysis of the possible violation of various Bell-type inequalities for systems of vector boson-antiboson pairs. Considering the general case of an overall scalar state of the bipartite system, we identify two distinct classes of such states, and determine the joint probabilities of spin measurement outcomes for each them. We calculate the expectation values of the CHSH, Mermin and CGLMP inequalities and find that while the generalised CHSH inequality is not expected to be violated for any of the scalar states, in the case of the Mermin and CGLMP inequalities the situation is different -- these inequalities can be violated in certain scalar states while they cannot be violated in others. Moreover, the degree of violation depends on the relative speed of the two particles.

Abstract:We use the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality to investigate the relationship among entanglement, purity and violation of the Bell inequality. On the one hand, we show numerically that all two-dimensional (qubit) states, whose entanglement of formation (EOF) is larger than 2 + root 2/4, violate the CHSH inequality. On the other hand, any state with purity smaller than 0.5562 may not violate it.

Abstract:Unitary operators are employed to investigate the violation of the Bell-CHSH inequality. The ensuing modifications affecting both classical and quantum bounds are elucidated. The relevance of a particular class of unitary operators whose expectation values are real is pointed out. For these operators, the classical and quantum bounds remain unaltered, being given, respectively, by $2$ and $2\sqrt{2}$. As an example, the Weyl unitary operators for a real scalar field in relativistic Quantum Field Theory are discussed.

Bell inequalities as a tool to probe quantum chaos

Abstract:We introduce a permutationally invariant multipartite Bell inequality for many-body three-level systems and use it to explore a possible connection between the presence of nonlocality and quantum chaos. For this, we interpret the Bell operator resulting from fixing the measurement settings as a system Hamiltonian and explore the energy level spacing distribution for different measurement choices and SU(3) irreducible representations. Interestingly, we find that in every irreducible representation displaying nonlocality, the measurement settings yielding maximal violation result in a Bell operator whose energy level spacing distribution signals the absence of quantum chaos. This situation changes when the measurement settings slightly depart from the optimal ones, as we generally observe a level spacing distribution characteristic of chaotic systems. Our work suggests an intriguing connection between Bell nonlocality, quantum chaos and random matrix theory. These subjects belonged to the beloved areas of the late Fritz Haake, and we dedicate this paper to his memory.

Abstract:We point out that, when the dimension of the Hilbert space is greater than two, Bell's operators entering the Bell-CHSH inequality exhibit unitarily inequivalent representations. Although the Bell-CHSH inequality turns out to be violated, the size of the violation is different for different representations, the maximum violation being given by Tsirelson's bound. The feature relies on a pairing mechanism between the modes of the Hilbert space of the system.

Abstract:For two qubits belonging to Alice and Bob, we derive an approach to set up the bound of the Bell operator in the condition that Alice and Bob continue to perform local vertical measurements. For pure states we find that if the entanglement of the two qubits is less than 0.2644 (measured with von Neumann entropy) the violation of the Bell inequality will never be realized, and only when the entanglement is equal to 1 can the maximal violation (2 root 2) occur. For a specific form of mixed states, we prove that the bound of the Bell inequality depends on the concurrence. Only when the concurrence is greater than 0.6 can the violation of the Bell inequality occur and the maximal violation can never be achieved. We suggest that the bound of the Bell operator in the condition of local vertical measurements may be used as a measure of the entanglement.

Abstract:We discuss the relations between the violation of the CHSH Bell inequality for systems of two qubits on the one side and entanglement of formation, local filtering operations, and the entropy and purity on the other. We calculate the extremal Bell violations for a given amount of entanglement of formation and characterize the respective states, which turn out to have extremal properties also with respect to the entropy, purity and several entanglement monotones. The optimal local filtering operations leading to the maximal Bell violation for a given state are provided and the special role of the resulting Bell diagonal states in the context of Bell inequalities is discussed.

Abstract:Bell's inequality plays an important role with respect to the Einsteinian question about the physical reality of quantum theory. While Bell's inequality is usually viewed within the geometric framework of a Hilbert space quantum model, the present note extends the theory of Heisenberg measurements to quantum systems with representations in general orthogonal geometric spaces and, in particular, the Minkowski spaces of relativity theory. A Feynmanian numerical example exhibits two measurements that admit a joint probabilistic interpretation in Minkowski space while they are not jointly observable in Hilbert space. The analysis shows that probabilistic interpretations of quantum measurements may depend not only on the measuring instruments and the system states but also on the geometric space in which the measurements are conducted. In particular, an explicit numerical example is given of a Heisenberg measurement with a complete set of common observables that violates Bell's inequality in Minkowski space but, mutatatis mutandis, satisfies it in Hilbert space.

Abstract:The theorem developed by John Bell constituted the starting point of a revolution that translated a philosophical question about the nature of reality into the broad and intense field of research of the quantum information technologies. We focus on a system of two qubits prepared in a random, mixed state, and we study the typical behavior of their nonlocality via the CHSH--Bell inequality. Afterward, motivated by the necessity of accounting for inefficiency in the state preparation, we address to what extent states close enough to one with a high degree of nonclassicality can violate local realism with a previously chosen experimental setup.

Abstract:Bell non-locality is closely related with device independent quantum randomness. In this paper, we present a kind of sum-of-squares (SOS) decomposition for general Bell inequalities in two qubits systems. By using the obtained SOS decomposition, we can then find the measurement operators associated with the maximal violation of considered Bell inequality. We also practice the SOS decomposition method by considering the (generalized) Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality, the Elegant Bell inequality, the Gisin inequality and the Chained Bell inequality as examples. The corresponding SOS decompositions and the measurement operators that cause the maximum violation values of these Bell inequalities are derived, which are consistent with previous results. We further discuss the device independent quantum randomness by using the SOS decompositions of Bell inequalities. We take the generalized CHSH inequality with the maximally entangled state and the Werner state that attaining the maximal violations as examples. Exact value or lower bound on the maximal guessing probability using the SOS decomposition are obtained. For Werner state, the lower bound can supply a much precise estimation of quantum randomness when $p$ tends to $1$.

Abstract:Derivations of two Bell's inequalities are given in a form appropriate to the interpretation of experimental data for explicit determination of all the correlations. They are arithmetic identities independent of statistical reasoning and thus cannot be violated by data that meets the conditions for their validity. Two experimentally performable procedures are described to meet these conditions. Once such data are acquired, it follows that the measured correlations cannot all equal a negative cosine of angular differences. The relation between this finding and the predictions of quantum mechanics is discussed in a companion paper.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that the premisses of the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen paper are inconsistent when applied to quantum systems consisting of at least three particles. The demonstration reveals that the EPR program contradicts quantum mechanics even for the cases of perfect correlations. By perfect correlations is meant arrangements by which the result of the measurement on one particle can be predicted with certainty given the outcomes of measurements on the other particles of the system. This incompatibility with quantum mechanics is stronger than the one previously revealed for two-particle systems by Bell’s inequality, where no contradiction arises at the level of perfect correlations. Both spin-correlation and multiparticle interferometry examples are given of suitable three- and four-particle arrangements, both at the gedanken and at the real experiment level.

Abstract:The Bell-CHSH inequality in the vacuum state of a relativistic scalar quantum field is revisited by making use of the Hilbert space ${\cal H} \otimes {\cal H}_{AB}$, where ${\cal H}$ and ${\cal H}_{AB}$ stand, respectively, for the Hilbert space of the scalar field and of a generic bipartite quantum mechanical system. The construction of Hermitian, field-dependent, dichotomic operators is devised as well as the Bell-CHSH inequality. Working out the $AB$ part of the inequality, the resulting Bell-CHSH correlation function for the quantum field naturally emerges from unitary Weyl operators. Furthermore, introducing a Jaynes-Cummings type Hamiltonian accounting for the interaction between the scalar field and a pair of qubits, the quantum corrections to the Bell-CHSH inequality in the vacuum state of the scalar field are evaluated till the second order in perturbation theory.

Abstract:In a remarkably insightful pair of papers recently, Sica demonstrated that: dichotomic data taken in any experiment that violates Bell's inequalities ``cannot represent any data streams that could possibly exist or be imagined'' if it is to be consistent with the derivation of the inequalities.\cite{sica} The present writer maintains, however, that corrections in the formulation of Bell's analysis loosen restrictions imposed by Bell inequalities. Moreover, it is argued that the resolution proposed by Sica for the conflict arising from the fact that real data does violate Bell inequalities, namely that the functional form of the correlations considered by Bell must be amended, is untenable on physical grounds. Finally, an alternate resolution is proposed.

Bounding conditional entropy of bipartite states with Bell operators

Abstract:Quantum information theory explores numerous properties that surpass classical paradigms, offering novel applications and benefits. Among these properties, negative conditional von Neumann entropy (CVNE) is particularly significant in entangled quantum systems, serving as an indicator of potential advantages in various information-theoretic tasks, despite its indirect observability. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between CVNE and the violation of Bell inequalities. Our goal is to establish upper bounds on CVNE through semi-definite programming applied to entangled qubits and qutrits, utilizing selected Bell operators. Our findings reveal that a semi-device-independent certification of negative CVNE is achievable and could be practically beneficial. We further explore two types of robustness: robustness against detection efficiency loopholes, measured by relative violation, and robustness against white noise and imperfections in state preparation, measured by critical visibility. Additionally, we analyze parametrized families of Bell inequalities to identify optimal parameters for different robustness criteria. This study demonstrates that different Bell inequalities exhibit varying degrees of robustness depending on the desired properties, such as the type of noise resistance or the target level of negative CVNE. By bridging the gap between Bell inequalities and CVNE, our research enhances understanding of the quantum properties of entangled systems and offers insights for practical quantum information processing tasks.
