Abstract:Elliptic genus was derived as the partition function in quantum field theory [26]. Mathematically it is the beautiful combination of topology of manifolds, index theory and modular forms (cf. [15], [10]). Elliptic genus for smooth manifolds has been well-studied. Recently, Borisov and Libgober ([3], [4]) proposed some definitions of elliptic genus for certain singular spaces, especially for complex orbifolds which is a global quotient M/G, here the finite group G acts holomorphically on complex variety M . Similar definitions have been introduced by string theorists in the 80s, in the study of orbifold string theory. One of their guiding principles is the modular invariance. More recently orbifold string theory has attracted the attention of geometers and topologists. For example Chen and Ruan (cf. [7], [22]) have defined orbifold cohomology and orbifold quantum cohomology groups. One of most important properties for elliptic genus is its rigidity property under compact Lie group action. For smooth manifolds, the rigidity and its generalizations have been well studied. Since orbifold elliptic genus is the partition function of orbifold string theory, it is natural to expect the rigidity property for orbifold elliptic genus. Although the global quotients from a very important class of orbifolds, many interesting orbifolds are not global quotients. For example, most of the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces of weighted projective spaces are not global quotients. In this paper we define elliptic genus for general orbifolds which generalizes the definition of Borisov and Libgober, and prove their rigidity property. We actually introduce the more general elliptic genus involving twisted bundles and proved its rigidity. The idea of considering the weights in the definition of orbifold elliptic genus comes from [4] and our proof of the K-theory version of Witten rigidity theorems [21, §4]. The proof of the rigidity is again a combination of modular invariance and the index theory. Only more complicated combinatorics are involved in the definition and the proof. This paper is organized as follows: In Sections 1 and 2 we review the equivariant index theorem on orbifolds. We define orbifold elliptic genus and prove its rigidity for almost complex orbifolds in Section 3. Finally in Section 4 we introduce orbifold elliptic genus for spin orbifolds, and will study its rigidity property on a later occasion. Abstract:An introduction to the theory of orbifolds from a modern perspective, combining techniques from geometry, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry. One of the main motivations, and a major source of examples, is string theory, where orbifolds play an important role. The subject is first developed following the classical description analogous to manifold theory, after which the book branches out to include the useful description of orbifolds provided by groupoids, as well as many examples in the context of algebraic geometry. Classical invariants such as de Rham cohomology and bundle theory are developed, a careful study of orbifold morphisms is provided, and the topic of orbifold K-theory is covered. The heart of this book, however, is a detailed description of the Chen-Ruan cohomology, which introduces a product for orbifolds and has had significant impact. The final chapter includes explicit computations for a number of interesting examples.

Abstract:We use freely acting asymmetric orbifolds of type IIB string theory to construct a class of theories in five dimensions with eight supercharges whose moduli spaces for vector multiplets and hypermultiplets can be determined exactly. We argue that no quantum corrections to these moduli spaces arise. We focus on examples in which all moduli are in the NS-NS sector, while all fields from the R-R sector become massive. The full symmetry group of the moduli space is then determined by the subgroup of the T-duality group that survives the orbifold action. We illustrate this for freely acting orbifolds of type IIB string theory on T 5 with 0, 1 or 2 hypermultiplets.

Abstract:We construct freely acting asymmetric Z 4 orbifolds of type IIB string theory on T 5 preserving 24,16 or 8 supercharges in five dimensions. We show that these models are well-defined if the SO(8) lattice is chosen, instead of the SU(2) 4 lattice, which was previously considered in the literature.

Abstract:Suppose that X is an orbifold. In general, KX is an orbifold vector bundle or a Q-divisor only. When the X is so called Gorenstein, KX is a bundle or a divisor. For Gorenstein orbifold, a resolution π : Y → X is called a crepant resolution if πKX = KY . Here, ”crepant” can be viewed as a minimality condition with respect to canonical bundle. Crepant resolution always exists when dimension is two or three. A nice way to construct it is to use Hilbert scheme of points. However, the crepant resolution in dimension three is not unique. Different crepant resolutions are connected by flops. When the dimension is bigger than four, the crepant resolution does not always exist. It is an extremely interesting problem in algebraic geometry to find out when it does exist. One of famous example is Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces, which is a crepant resolution of the symmetry product of an algebraic surface. It has long been an interesting problem to compute cohomology of Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces. A great deal of works has been done by algebraic geometors. As far as the author’s knowledge, everything has been computed except its ring structure. Among all the progress, a less known but crucial ingredient is the link to the orbifold cohomology of the symmetry product. Suppose that M is an algebraic surface. We use M [n] to denote the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of M . In 1994, in order to explain the modularity of the generating function ∑∞ n=1 χ(M [n])qn computed by Göttsche [G], Vafa-Witten [VW] computed ⊕nH (M/Sn,C). Motivated by orbifold conformal field theory, they directly wrote ⊕nH (M/Sn,C) as a ”Fock space” or a representation of Heisenberg algebra. Then, the generating function of Euler characteristic is interpreted as the correlation function of an elliptic curve. Therefore, it should be invariant under modular transformations of the elliptic curve. Orbifold string theory conjecture predicates that ⊕nH ∗(M [n],C) should also admit a representation of Heisenberg algebra. This conjecture was verified by a beautiful work of Nakajima [N] and others. One of theme of this short note is that the orbifold M/Sn will continue to play a crucial role to compute ring structure of H∗(M [n],C). During last two years, there was a surge of activities to study mathematics of the orbifold string theory, which author called the stringy orbifolds. A few curious physical concepts such as the orbifold Euler-Hodge numbers of global quotients found their places in a much broader and deeper theory. For example, a new cohomology (orbifold cohomology) was constructed [CR1]. The growth was so explosive that the author believes that there is an emerging new subject of mathematics. He learned in graduate school that the test of the relevance of a new theory has been the progress it made from old problems. Therefore, it is particularly significant to revisit the problem of computing the ring structure of M [n] and a crepant resolution in general. In [R2], the author proposed a conjecture in the case of a hyperkahler resolution.

Abstract:Using free world-sheet fermions, we construct and classify all the N=2, Z2 X Z2 four-dimensional orbifolds of the type IIA/B strings for which the orbifold projections act symmetrically on the left and right movers. We study the deformations of these models out of the fermionic point, deriving the partition functions at a generic point in the moduli of the internal torus T6=T2 X T2 X T2. We investigate some of their perturbative and non-perturbative dualities and construct new dual pairs of type IIA/type II asymmetric orbifolds, which are related non-perturbatively and allow us to gain insight into some of the non-perturbative properties of the type IIA/B strings in four dimensions. In particular, we consider some of the (non-)perturbative gravitational corrections.

Abstract:The bound state of one NS5 brane (wrapped on a $\mathbb{T}^4$) and $N$ NS1-branes has two dual descriptions: its low-energy dynamics is described by the symmetric orbifold of $\mathbb{T}^4$, while the near horizon geometry is captured by string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3 \times {\rm S}^3\times \mathbb{T}^4$ with one unit of NS flux. The latter theory is exactly solvable in the hybrid formalism, and this allows one to prove the equivalence of the two descriptions. In this paper we extend this duality to $\mathbb{Z}_k$ orbifolds of this ${\rm AdS}_3 \times {\rm S}^3$ background. In particular, we show that the corresponding worldsheet spectrum reproduces exactly the perturbative excitations on top of a certain non-perturbative state in the dual symmetric orbifold theory. Since the ${\rm AdS}/{\rm CFT}$ duality map is exact for these models, we obtain an interesting picture of how the duality relates boundary and bulk descriptions.

Abstract:We study orbifold compactifications of F-theory which lead to $N=1$ supersymmetry in 6 and 4 spacetime dimensions. These are dual to specific orientifolds of M-theory, and in many cases to orientifolds of type IIB string theory. The equivalences are demonstrated by mapping the orbifolding transformations in the F, M and string theories to each other using dualities. We observe that M and F-theory appear to possess a property similar to discrete torsion in string theory. This is related to an ambiguity recently noted by Polchinski in the orientifold projection for 6-dimensional models. The 4-dimensional compactifications exhibit similar features, from which we predict the existence of certain new orientifolds of type IIB. Some orbifolds with higher supersymmetry are also examined.

Abstract:In this fourth paper of the series, I clarify the somewhat mysterious relation between the large class of {\it orientation orbifolds} (with twisted open-string CFT's at $\hat c=52$) and {\it orientifolds} (with untwisted open strings at $c=26$), both of which have been associated to division by world-sheet orientation-reversing automorphisms. In particular -- following a spectral clue in the previous paper -- I show that, even as an {\it interacting string system}, a certain half-integer-moded orientation orbifold-string system is in fact equivalent to the archetypal orientifold. The subtitle of this paper, that orientation orbifolds include and generalize standard orientifolds, then follows because there are many other orientation orbifold-string systems -- with higher fractional modeing -- which are not equivalent to untwisted string systems.

Abstract:We study the orbifold singularities X = C 3 /Γ where Γ is a finite subgroup of SU (3).M-theory on this orbifold singularity gives rise to a 5d SCFT, which is investigated with two methods.The first approach is via 3d McKay correspondence which relates the group theoretic data of Γ to the physical properties of the 5d SCFT.In particular, the 1-form symmetry of the 5d SCFT is read off from the Mckay quiver of Γ in an elegant way.The second method is to explicitly resolve the singularity X and study the Coulomb branch information of the 5d SCFT, which is applied to toric, non-toric hypersurface and complete intersection cases.Many new theories are constructed, either with or without an IR quiver gauge theory description.We find that many resolved Calabi-Yau threefolds, X, contain compact exceptional divisors that are singular by themselves.Nonetheless, some of these theories are interpreted as the known rank-1 Seiberg E N theory.Moreover, for certain cases of Γ, the orbifold singularity C 3 /Γ can be embedded in an elliptic model and gives rise to a 6d (1,0) SCFT in the F-theory construction.Such 6d theory is naturally related to the 5d SCFT defined on the same singularity.We find examples of rank-1 6d SCFTs without a gauge group, which are different from the rank-1 E-string theory.

Abstract:In this work we study families of Z 2 orbifolds of toroidal conformal field theories based on both factorizable and non-factorizable target space tori. For these classes of theories, we analyze their moduli spaces, and compute their partition functions. Building on previous work, we express the calculated partition functions in terms of suitable Siegel-Narain theta functions that allow us to determine their ensemble averages. We express the derived averaged partition functions of the studied families of conformal field theories in a manifest modular invariant finite sum of products of real analytic Eisenstein series. We speculate on a tentative holographic three-dimensional dual bulk interpretations for the considered Z 2 orbifold classes of ensembles of conformal field theories.

Abstract:We develop the theory of orbibundles from a geometrical viewpoint using diffeology. One of our goals is to present new tools allowing to calculate invariants of complex hyperbolic disc orbibundles over $2$-orbifolds appearing in the geometry of $4$-manifolds. These invariants are the Euler number of disc orbibundles and the Toledo invariant of $\mathrm{PU}(2,1)$-representations of $2$-orbifold groups.

Abstract:In this note we explore the variation of Hodge structures associated to the orbifold Landau-Ginzburg B-model whose superpotential has two variables. We extend the Getzler-Gauss-Manin connection to Hochschild chains twisted by group action. As an application, we provide explicit computations for the Getzler-Gauss-Manin connection on the universal (noncommutative) unfolding of Z(2)-orbifolding of A-type singularities. The result verifies an example of deformed version of Mckay correspondence.

Abstract:We investigate strings at singularities of G_2-holonomy manifolds which arise in Z_2 orbifolds of Calabi-Yau spaces times a circle. The singularities locally look like R^4/Z_2 fibered over a SLAG, and can globally be embedded in CICYs in weighted projective spaces. The local model depends on the choice of a discrete torsion in the fibration, and the global model on an anti-holomorphic involution of the Calabi-Yau hypersurface. We determine how these choices are related to each other by computing a Wilson surface detecting discrete torsion. We then follow the same orbifolds to the non-geometric Landau-Ginzburg region of moduli space. We argue that the symmetry-breaking twisted sectors are effectively captured by real Landau-Ginzburg potentials. In particular, we find agreement in the low-energy spectra of strings computed from geometry and Gepner-model CFT. Along the way, we construct the full modular data of orbifolds of N=2 minimal models by the mirror automorphism, and give a real-LG interpretation of their modular invariants. Some of the models provide examples of the mirror-symmetry phenomenon for G_2 holonomy.

Abstract:Abstract In 5D and 6D U(N) and SU(N) gauge theories compactified on S1/Z2 and T2/Z3 orbifolds, we propose a new method to classify the equivalence classes (ECs) of boundary conditions (BCs) without depending on the structure of gauge transformations. Some of the BCs are connected through gauge transformations and constitute ECs, each of which contains physically equivalent BCs. Previous methods for classifying ECs have been used for specific gauge transformations. In this paper, we show that a geometric property of orbifolds significantly narrows down the possibilities of connecting BCs and completes the classification of ECs.
