Abstract:We have derived the interaction between Jahn-Teller centers due to optical and acoustic phonons. Without Coulomb repulsion the model leads to a global phase separation at low temperature. At long distances Coulomb repulsion always dominates the short range attraction leading to phase separation on a short scale. On the basis of Monte-Carlo simulation of microscopic lattice-gas model we have formulated an effective phenomenological model. In the limit of low density of polarons, phase separation takes place in the form of charged bubbles. In the limit of high density, charge segregation occurs on domain walls.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the occurrence mechanism of mesoscopic phase separation in a model with competitive Jahn - Teller effect and Coulomb interaction. Specifically, the researchers constructed a simplified lattice - gas model and analyzed the phase - separation behavior under different conditions through Monte Carlo simulations.
### Main problems solved in the paper
1. **Model construction and phase - separation phenomenon**:
- The researchers first deduced the interaction between Jahn - Teller centers, taking into account the influence of optical and acoustic phonons. In the absence of Coulomb repulsion, the model will lead to global phase separation at low temperatures.
- When long - range Coulomb repulsion is considered, global phase separation becomes unfavorable, and the system exhibits mesoscopic phase separation, that is, phase separation occurs on a short scale.
2. **Morphology of phase separation**:
- At low density, phase separation occurs in the form of charged bubbles.
- At high density, charges are separated on domain walls.
3. **Anisotropic influence of attractive potential**:
- By introducing an anisotropic short - range attractive potential, the researchers found that phase separation can form stripe - like or cluster - like structures, and the specific morphology depends on the anisotropy of the attractive potential.
4. **Comparison between theoretical and simulation results**:
- Through mean - field theory and Monte Carlo simulations, the researchers verified the predictions of the model and found that in the two - dimensional case, the critical temperature is reduced due to fluctuation effects in Monte Carlo simulation results.
- Simulation results show that Coulomb repulsion further reduces the starting temperature of phase separation, and the morphology of phase separation (such as bubbles, horizontal and vertical stripes, diagonal stripes) depends on the strength and anisotropy of the attractive potential.
### Key formulas
- **Jahn - Teller model Hamiltonian**:
\[
H_{\text{JT}} = g \sum_{n, l} \sigma_3^l f(n) (b_l^\dagger + b_l)
\]
where \(\sigma_3^l\) is the Pauli matrix, which describes the two components of the electron doublet, \(f(n)=(n_x^2 - n_y^2) f_0(n)\), and \(f_0(n)\) is a symmetric function that describes the range of interaction.
- **Lattice - gas model Hamiltonian**:
\[
H_{\text{LG}}=\sum_{i, j}\left(-V_l(i - j) S_z^i S_z^j+V_c(i - j) Q_i Q_j\right)
\]
where \(Q_i=(S_z^i)^2\), \(V_c(n)=\frac{e^2}{\epsilon_0 a (n_x^2 + n_y^2)^{1/2}}\) is the Coulomb potential, \(e\) is the electron charge, \(\epsilon_0\) is the static dielectric constant, \(a\) is the effective unit cell period, and \(V_l(n)=\frac{g^2}{\omega} \sum_m f(m) f(n + m)\) is the anisotropic short - range attractive potential.
- **Free - energy density**:
\[
F_1=\left((t - 1)+(\Lambda^2 - 1)^2\right) \Lambda^2
\]
where \(t\) is the dimensionless temperature and \(\Lambda\) is the order parameter.
### Conclusion
Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the paper reveals the mechanism of mesoscopic phase separation and its morphological diversity in systems with Jahn - Teller effect and Coulomb interaction. These results are of great significance for understanding the charge - separation phenomenon in oxide materials.
