Abstract: In the Hilbert scheme of points on a scheme X there is an open subset parameterizing distinct points. The closure of that open set is by definition the good component. When X is flat over the base, we show that a certain blow-up of the symmetric product of X is the good component. The center of the blow-up we describe by giving generators for its defining ideal. In the non-flat case we obtain similar result by replacing the symmetric product with the divided power product. For smooth surfaces X the good component equals the Hilbert scheme of points.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is a specific construction problem regarding the Hilbert scheme. Specifically, the authors aim to recover the "good component" in the Hilbert scheme through an explicit method of constructing an ideal, that is, the schematic closure of the open subscheme consisting of \(n\) distinct points in the space of subschemes of length \(n\). ### Background and Motivation The Hilbert scheme \(\text{Hilb}^n_{X/S}\) is a moduli space that parameterizes subschemes of length \(n\) on \(X\), where \(X\) is a scheme defined over some base \(S\). However, even when \(X\) itself is smooth, the Hilbert scheme is not necessarily smooth, and may not even be relatively irreducible. This brings difficulties to the research. ### Specific Formulation of the Problem The main goal of the paper is to generalize Haiman's results in more general situations. Haiman achieved the construction of the Hilbert scheme in the affine plane over the complex field through the blow - up of a specific ideal. However, Haiman's method relies too much on the special properties of two - dimensional affine space in the case of characteristic zero, and thus is not applicable to more general cases. ### Main Contributions By using the formalism of divided powers, the authors define an ideal and prove that the blow - up of this ideal is isomorphic to the schematic closure of the open subscheme consisting of \(n\) distinct points in the Hilbert scheme. This method is applicable not only to flat maps \(X\to S\), but also to non - flat cases, by using the divided power product instead of the symmetric product. ### Technical Details 1. **Formalism of Divided Powers**: The authors make use of the excellent properties of the divided power algebra \(\Gamma^n_A(F)\) to define an ideal and prove that this ideal is still valid in more general cases. 2. **Construction of the Ideal**: Through the multiplicative structure of the divided power algebra, the authors define a candidate ideal and prove that the blow - up of this ideal is isomorphic to the "good component" in the Hilbert scheme. 3. **Handling of Non - flat Cases**: In non - flat cases, the authors make the argument proceed smoothly by using the divided power product instead of the symmetric product. ### Conclusion Through these methods, the authors successfully recover the "good component" in the Hilbert scheme in more general cases and provide a construction very close to Haiman's result. This result is applicable not only to flat maps but also to non - flat cases, thus greatly expanding the scope of application.
