Abstract:Recent research on the fundamentals of statistical mechanics has led to an interesting discovery: With locally nonchaotic barriers, as Boltzmann's H-theorem is inapplicable, there exist nontrivial non-thermodynamic systems that can produce useful work by absorbing heat from a single thermal reservoir without any other effect, thereby breaking the boundaries of the second law of thermodynamics. The previous analyses used classical mechanical models. In the current investigation, the study is extended to quantum mechanics. First, we confirm that the Fermi-Dirac distribution and the Bose-Einstein distribution are inherently consistent with the heat-engine statement of the second law of thermodynamics. It reiterates the robustness of the overall framework of quantum statistical mechanics. Next, we perform thermodynamic analysis on a set of simple-step scattering problems. The result suggests that a bound state has a strong tendency to adhere to the second law of thermodynamics, while an unbound state may not. It implies that non-thermodynamic phenomena favor unquantized energy.

Emergence of a second law of thermodynamics in isolated quantum systems

Abstract:The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of an isolated system can only increase over time. This appears to conflict with the reversible evolution of isolated quantum systems under the Schrödinger equation, which preserves the von Neumann entropy. Nonetheless, one finds that with respect to many observables, expectation values approach a fixed value -- their equilibrium value. This ultimately raises the question: in what sense does the entropy of an isolated quantum system increase over time? For classical systems, one introduces the assumption of a low entropy initial state along with the concept of ignorance about the microscopic details of the physical system, leading to a statistical interpretation of the second law. By considering the observables through which we examine quantum systems, both these assumptions can be incorporated, building upon recent studies of the equilibration on average of observables. While the statistical behavior of observable expectation values is well-established, a quantitative connection to entropy increase has been lacking so far. In deriving novel bounds for the equilibration of observables, and considering the entropy of the system relative to observables, we recover a variant of the second law: the entropy with respect to a given observable tends towards its equilibrium value in the course of the system's unitary evolution. These results also support recent findings which question the necessity of non-integrability for equilibration in quantum systems. We further illustrate our bounds using numerical results from the paradigmatic example of a quantum Ising model on a chain of spins. There, we observe entropy increasing up to equilibrium values, as well as fluctuations which expose the underlying reversible evolution in accordance with the derived bounds.

Abstract:Highlights • The Meissner effect is observed because of the correspondence principle violation. • The microscopic quantum mechanics satisfy the correspondence principle. • The Ginzburg–Landau theory contradicts the correspondence principle. • Macroscopic quantum phenomena can be described due to Landau's postulate. Jorge Hirsch drew attention to the contradiction of the Meissner effect with Faraday's law and the law of angular momentum conservation. This article draws attention to the fact that the angular momentum can change without any force only due to quantization in both microscopic and macroscopic quantum phenomena. But if in the first case this change cannot exceed the Planck constant, then in the second case this change is macroscopic due to a violation of the correspondence principle. To explain the violation of the correspondence principle, Lev Landau postulated in 1941 that microscopic particles in superfluid helium and superconductor cannot move separately. Quantization can change not only the angular momentum, but also the kinetic energy of a superconducting condensate on a macroscopic amount. For this reason, the Meissner effect and other macroscopic quantum phenomena contradict the second law of thermodynamics. The reluctance of physicists to admit the violation of the second law of thermodynamics provoked a false understanding of the phenomenon of superconductivity and obvious contradictions in books on superconductivity. Abstract:Jorge Hirsch, in his Comment on my article published in Entropy, agrees that the conventional BCS theory of superconductivity contradicts the second law of thermodynamics. He tries to prove that this theory cannot be valid because of this contradiction, since the Meissner effect is consistent with the second law of thermodynamics, according to his alternative theory of superconductivity, which can explain how the persistent currents can be annihilated before the resistance appearance. First of all I draw attention on experimental facts according to which the persistent currents observed in rings can be not annihilated not only before but even after the resistance appearance, in accordance with the conventional theory of superconductivity and contrary to the second law of thermodynamics. Hirsch's proof of the consistency of the Meissner effect with the second law of thermodynamics is based on mistakes provoked by ignoring the contradictions between books on superconductivity and the false analogy of the Gorter cycle with the Carnot cycle. In fact, Hirsch did not refute, but confirmed the conclusion made in my article about the contradiction of the Meissner effect to the second law of thermodynamics.

Probabilistically violating the first law of thermodynamics in a quantum heat engine

Abstract:Fluctuations of thermodynamic observables, such as heat and work, contain relevant information on the underlying physical process. These fluctuations are however not taken into account in the traditional laws of thermodynamics. While the second law is extended to fluctuating systems by the celebrated fluctuation theorems, the first law is generally believed to hold even in the presence of fluctuations. Here we show that in the presence of quantum fluctuations, also the first law of thermodynamics may break down. This happens because quantum mechanics imposes constraints on the knowledge of heat and work. To illustrate our results, we provide a detailed case-study of work and heat fluctuations in a quantum heat engine based on a circuit QED architecture. We find probabilistic violations of the first law and show that they are closely connected to quantum signatures related to negative quasi-probabilities. Our results imply that in the presence of quantum fluctuations, the first law of thermodynamics may not be applicable to individual experimental runs.

Abstract:We test Boltzmann's H-theorem for several models of particle random walk. We study the influence of interaction between the particle and reservoir/detectors on entropy and find entropy increasing in time for some models and behaving non-monotonically for others. The key mechanism affecting the entropy growth is the quantum entanglement between the system and the reservoir. We discuss the details of the system-reservoir interaction, such as presence of the interference in the system and number of interactions with detector parts, and their impact on the monotonicity of entropy.

Abstract:Does thermodynamics still hold true for mecroscopic small systems with only limited degrees of freedom? Do concepts such as temperature, entropy, work done, heat transfer, isothermal processes, and the Carnot cycle remain valid? Does the thermodynamic theory for small systems need modifying or supplementing compared with traditional thermodynamics applicable to macroscopic systems? Taking a single-particle system for example, we investigate the applicability of thermodynamic concepts and laws in small systems. We have found that thermodynamic laws still hold true in small systems at an ensemble-averaged level. After considering the information erasure of the Maxwell’s demon, the second law of thermodynamics is not violated. Additionally, ‘small systems’ bring some new features. Fluctuations in thermodynamic quantities become prominent. In any process far from equilibrium, the distribution functions of thermodynamic quantities satisfy certain rigorously established identities. These identities are known as fluctuation theorems. The second law of thermodynamics can be derived from them. Therefore, fluctuation theorems can be considered an upgradation to the second law of thermodynamics. They enable physicists to obtain equilibrium properties (e.g. free energy difference) by measuring physical quantities associated with non-equilibrium processes (e.g. work distributions). Furthermore, despite some distinct quantum features, the performance of quantum heat engine does not outperform that of classical heat engine. The introduction of motion equations into small system makes the relationship between thermodynamics and mechanics closer than before. Physicists can study energy dissipation in non-equilibrium process and optimize the power and efficiency of heat engine from the first principle. These findings enrich the content of thermodynamic theory and provide new ideas for establishing a general framework for non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Abstract:The challenges and claims of hypothetical violations of the Second Law of thermodynamics have been a topic of many scientific, philosophical and social publications, even in the most prestigious scientific journals. Fascination with challenging the Second Law has further accelerated throughout the development of statistical and quantum physics, and information theory. It is phenomenologically reasoned here that non-equilibrium, useful work-energy potential is always dissipated to heat, and thus thermodynamic entropy (a measure of thermal disorder, not any other disorder) is generated always and everywhere, at any scale without exception, including life processes, open systems, micro-fluctuations, gravity or entanglement. Furthermore, entropy cannot be destroyed by any means at any scale (entropy is conserved in ideal, reversible processes and irreversibly generated in real processes), and thus, entropy cannot overall decrease, but only overall increase. Creation of ordered structures or live species always dissipate useful energy and generate entropy, without exception, and thus without Second Law violation. Entropy destruction would imply spontaneous increase in non-equilibrium, with mass-energy flux displacement against cause-and-effect, natural forces, as well as negate the reversible existence of the very equilibrium. In fact, all resolved challengers’ paradoxes and misleading violations of the Second Law to date have been resolved in favor of the Second Law and never against. We are still to witness a single, still open Second Law violation, to be confirmed.

Experimental confirmation of breach of the basic postulate of Statistical Physics

Abstract:In the course of computer modeling of the most probable stationary macrostates of non-ergodic closed systems, a forecast was obtained about the existence of limits of applicability of the basic axiomatic postulate of statistical physics, known as the Principle of Equiprobability of each realizable microstate. Moreover, for such systems, thermodynamic equilibrium is no longer the only permissible stationary state. The possibility of other most probable macrostates is predicted, which are characterized by the presence of a stable anisotropy of the polarization parameters of thermal radiation filling these systems. The article presents successful results of direct experimental verification of the above prognosis on a real physical installation. Important regularities inherent in the used mathematical model are noted.

Abstract:Quantum systems of indistinguishable particles are commonly described using the formalism of second quantisation, which relies on the assumption that any admissible quantum state must be either symmetric or anti-symmetric under particle permutations. Coherence-induced many-body effects such as superradiance, however, can arise even in systems whose constituents are not fundamentally indistinguishable as long as all relevant dynamical observables are permutation-invariant. Such systems are not confined to symmetric or anti-symmetric states and therefore require a different theoretical approach. Focusing on non-interacting systems, here we combine tools from representation theory and thermodynamically consistent master equations to develop such a framework. We characterise the structure and properties of the steady states emerging in permutation-invariant ensembles of arbitrary multi-level systems that are collectively weakly coupled to a thermal environment. As an application of our general theory, we further explore how these states can in principle be used to enhance the performance of quantum thermal machines. Our group-theoretical framework thereby makes it possible to analyse various limiting cases that would not be accessible otherwise. In addition, it allows us to show that the properties of multi-level ensembles differ qualitatively from those of spin ensembles, which have been investigated earlier using the standard Clebsch-Gordan theory. Our results have a large scope for future generalisations and pave the way for systematic investigations of collective effects arising from permutation-invariance in quantum thermodynamics.

Abstract:A reply is made to Comment by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://D.P.Sheehan" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> in which he takes notice that the quantum force introduced in my earlier paper <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://A.V.Nikulov" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, Phys. Rev. B 64, 012505 (2001) challenges to the absolute status of the second law of thermodynamics. It is shown that the introduction of the quantum force explains only an experimental challenge to the second law. The observation of the persistent current at non-zero resistance R > 0 is experimental evidence of violation of the postulate saving the second law in the beginning of the 20 century. According to this postulate any Brownian motion is absolutely random whereas the persistent current at R > 0 is a regulated Brownian motion.

Abstract:Understanding the entropy production of systems strongly coupled to thermal baths is a core problem of both quantum thermodynamics and mesoscopic physics. While many techniques exist to accurately study entropy production in such systems, they typically require a microscopic description of the baths, which can become numerically intractable to study for large systems. Alternatively an open-systems approach can be employed with all the nuances associated with various levels of approximation. Recently, the mesoscopic leads approach has emerged as a powerful method for studying such quantum systems strongly coupled to multiple thermal baths. In this method, a set of discretized lead modes, each locally damped, provide a Markovian embedding. Here we show that this method proves extremely useful to describe entropy production of a strongly coupled open quantum system. We show numerically, for both noninteracting and interacting setups, that a system coupled to a single bath exhibits a thermal fixed point at the level of the embedding. This allows us to use various results from the thermodynamics of quantum dynamical semigroups to infer the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of the strongly coupled, non-Markovian central systems. In particular, we show that the entropy production in the transient regime recovers the well-established microscopic definitions of entropy production with a correction that can be computed explicitly for both the single- and multiple-lead cases. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.110.014125 ©2024 American Physical Society

Persistent versus dissipative Peltier effect in a topological quantum thermocouple

Abstract:The Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect on the thermoelectric properties of three-terminal quantum devices is investigated. Thermodynamic relations among the linear-response coefficients of these devices are derived and interpreted. General expressions are derived using nonequilibrium Green's functions, and applied to calculate the thermoelectric response of a model quantum thermocouple. It is shown that the AB effect can generate a large thermoelectric response in a device with particle-hole symmetry, which nominally has zero Seebeck and Peltier coefficients. In addition to modifying the external electric and thermal currents of the device, the AB effect also induces persistent electric and thermal currents. One might expect that a persistent electric current in a quantum thermocouple, through the Peltier effect, could lead to persistent Peltier cooling, violating the 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics. However, this apparent paradox is resolved by elucidating the distinction between persistent and dissipative currents in quantum thermoelectrics.

Abstract:In Entropy 24, 83 (2022) [1], titled "The Law of Entropy Increase and the Meissner Effect", A. Nikulov claims that the Meissner effect exhibited by type I superconductors violates the second law of thermodynamics. Contrary to this claim, I show that the Meissner effect is consistent with the second law of thermodynamics provided that a mechanism exists for the supercurrent to start and stop without generation of Joule heat. The theory of hole superconductivity provides such a mechanism, the conventional theory of superconductivity does not. It requires the existence of hole carriers in the normal state of the system.

Abstract:In quantum systems which satisfy the hypothesis of equal weights for eigenstates [4], the maximum work principle (for extremely slow and relatively fast operation) is derived by using quantum dynamics alone. This may be a crucial step in establishing a firm connection between macroscopic thermodynamics and microscopic quantum dynamics. For special models introduced in [4,5], the derivation of the maximum work principle can be executed without introducing any unproved assumptions.

Abstract:Understanding how macroscopic systems exhibit irreversible thermal behavior has been a long-standing challenge, first brought to prominence by Boltzmann. Recent advances have established rigorous conditions for isolated quantum systems to equilibrate to a maximum entropy state, contingent upon weak assumptions. These theorems, while powerful, apply for a sudden quench. However, natural processes involve finite-time perturbations or quenches, which raises a crucial question: Can these systems still equilibrate under more realistic, finite-time dynamics? In this work, we extend the established results to account for finite-time quenches, demonstrating that even under finite-time perturbations, the system will equilibrate provided it populates many significant energy levels. While the mathematical proof is more intricate than in the instantaneous case, the physical conclusion remains the same: sufficient perturbation leads to equilibration. Our results provide a broader and more physically realistic framework for understanding thermalization in isolated quantum systems

On the second law of thermodynamics: An ideal-gas flow spontaneously induced by a locally nonchaotic energy barrier

Abstract:People are well aware that, inherently, certain small-scale nonchaotic particle movements are not governed by thermodynamics. Usually, such phenomena are studied by kinetic theory and their energy properties are considered "trivial". In current research, we show that, beyond the boundary of the second law of thermodynamics where Boltzmann's H-theorem does not apply, there are also large-sized systems of nontrivial energy properties: when the system is isolated, entropy can decrease; from a single thermal reservoir, the system can absorb heat and produce useful work without any other effect. The key concept is local nonchaoticity, demonstrated by using a narrow energy barrier. The barrier width is much less than the nominal particle mean free path, so that inside the barrier, the particle-particle collisions are sparse and the particle trajectories tend to be locally nonchaotic. Across the barrier, the steady-state particle flux ratio is intrinsically in a non-Boltzmann form. With a step-ramp structure, the nonequilibrium effect spreads to the entire system, and a global flow is generated spontaneously from the random thermal motion. The deviation from thermodynamic equilibrium is steady and significant, and compatible with the basic principle of maximum entropy. These theoretical and numerical analyses may shed light on the fundamentals of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics.
