Abstract: We present an approach to cohomological dimension theory based on infinite symmetric products and on the general theory of dimension called the extension dimension. The notion of the extension dimension $\ExD(X)$ was introduced by A.N.Dranishnikov \cite {D$_5$} in the context of compact spaces and CW complexes.

Abstract:We provide a duality theorem between Ext and Tor modules over a Cohen-Macaulay local ring possessing a canonical module, and use it to prove some freeness criteria for finite modules. The applications include a characterization of codimension three complete intersection ideals and progress on a long-held multi-conjecture of Vasconcelos. By a similar technique, we furnish another theorem which in addition makes use of the notion of cohomological dimension and is mainly of interest in dimension one; as an application, we show that the celebrated Huneke-Wiegand conjecture in the case of complete intersections holds true provided that a single additional condition is satisfied.

Abstract:For arbitrary varieties of universal algebras, we develop the theory around the first and second-cohomology groups characterizing extensions realizing affine datum. Restricted to varieties with a weak-difference term, extensions realizing affine datum are exactly extensions with abelian kernels. This recovers many classic examples of extensions with abelian coefficients since varieties with a weak-difference term give a far-reaching generalization of algebras like groups with multiple operators; indeed, any variety of algebras whose congruences form modular lattices. We introduce a notion of action and its model relation with a set of equations. In varieties with a difference term, central extensions are characterized by a property of their actions. Restricting further to a subclass of varieties with a difference term which still includes groups with multiple operators, we recover a special case of the representation of extensions with abelian kernels.

Abstract:We generalize a theorem of Bismut–Zhang, which extends the Cheeger–Müller theorem on Ray–Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case of infinite Galois covering spaces. Our result is stated in the framework of extended cohomology, and generalizes in this case a recent result of Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai. It does not use the determinant class condition and thus also (potentially) generalizes several results on L2-torsions due to Burghelea, Friedlander, Kappeler and McDonald. We combine the framework developed by Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai on the determinant of extended cohomology with the heat kernel method developed in the original paper of Bismut–Zhang to prove our result.

Abstract:We calculate mod-p cohomology of extended powers, and their group completions which are free infinite loop spaces. We consider the cohomology of all extended powers of a space together and identify a Hopf ring structure with divided powers within which cup product structure is more readily computable than on its own. We build on our previous calculations of cohomology of symmetric groups, which are the cohomology of extended powers of a point, the well-known calculation of homology, and new results on cohomology of symmetric groups with coefficients in the sign representation. We then use this framework to understand cohomology rings of related spaces such as infinite extended powers and free infinite loop spaces. v2 typo in gradings of Theorem 2.35 corrected.

Arithmeticity for integral cohomological dimension of configuration spaces of manifolds

Abstract:Consider the configuration spaces of manifolds. We give a precise formula for the integral cohomological dimension (the degree of top non-trivial integral cohomology group) of unordered configuration spaces of manifolds with non-trivial co-dimension one cohomology group, and show that the the sequence of cohomological dimensions is arithmetic. This arithmeticity is not present in the classical example of Arnold. Moreover, we show that the top integral cohomology group is infinite. Furthermore, We give a lower bound for the rank of top integral cohomology group. We also predict that the top integral cohomology group of configuration spaces of manifolds with non-trivial co-dimension one cohomology group is eventually finite. To the best of our knowledge, there is no rigorous bound for the cohomological dimension of ordered configuration spaces. As an application of main results, we give a sharp lower bound for the cohomological dimension of ordered configuration spaces of manifolds. The first step of the proof of main results is to define a reduced Chevalley Eilenberg complex.

Infinite graph product of groups I: Geometry of the extension graph

Abstract:We introduce the extension graph of graph product of groups and study its geometry. This enables us to study properties of graph product by exploiting large scale geometry of its defining graph. In particular, we show that the extension graph is isomorphic to the crossing graph of a canonical quasi-median graph and exhibits the same phenomenon about asymptotic dimension as quasi-trees of metric spaces studied by Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara. As an application of the extension graph, we prove relative hyperbolicity of graph-wreath product. This provides a new construction of relatively hyperbolic groups.

Finite homological dimension of Hom and vanishing of Ext

Abstract:For finitely generated modules $M$ and $N $ over a commutative Noetherian local ring $R$, we give various sufficient criteria for detecting freeness of $M$ or $N$ via vanishing of some finitely many Ext modules $\textrm{Ext}^i_R(M,N)$ and finiteness of certain homological dimension of $\textrm{Hom}_R(M,N)$. Some of our results provide partial progress towards answering a question of Ghosh-Takahashi and also generalize their main results in many ways, for instance, by reducing the number of vanishing. Certain special cases of our results allow us to address the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for modules whose (self) dual has finite projective dimension. Along the way, we also provide a negative answer to a question of Gheibi-Takahashi on characteristic modules. Among other things, the notion of residually faithful modules and certain generalizations of it play a crucial role in our study. As some applications of our results, we provide affirmative answers to two questions raised by Tony Se on $n$-semidualizing modules. Namely, we show that over a local ring of depth $t$, every $(t-1)$-semidualizing module of finite G-dimension is free. Moreover, we establish that for normal domains which satisfy Serre's condition $(S_3)$ and are locally Gorenstein in codimension two, the class of $1$-semidualizing modules form a subgroup of the divisor class group. These two groups coincide when, in addition, the ring is locally regular in codimension two.

Identities for Whitehead products and infinite sums

Abstract:Whitehead products and natural infinite sums are prominent in the higher homotopy groups of the $n$-dimensional infinite earring space $\mathbb{E}_n$ and other locally complicated Peano continua. In this paper, we derive general identities for how these operations interact with each other. As an application, we consider a shrinking-wedge $X$ of $(n-1)$-connected finite CW-complexes $X_1,X_2,X_3,\dots$ and compute the infinite-sum closure $\mathcal{W}_{2n-1}(X)$ of the set of Whitehead products $[\alpha,\beta]$ in $\pi_{2n-1}\left(X\right)$ where $\alpha,\beta\in\pi_n(X)$ are represented in respective sub-wedges that meet only at the basepoint. In particular, we show that $\mathcal{W}_{2n-1}(X)$ is canonically isomorphic to $\prod_{j=1}^{\infty}\left(\pi_{n}(X_j)\otimes \prod_{k>j}\pi_n(X_k)\right)$. The insight provided by this computation motivates a conjecture about the isomorphism type of the elusive groups $\pi_{2n-1}(\mathbb{E}_n)$, $n\geq 2$.

Symmetric products of Galois-Maximal varieties

Abstract:The main result of this paper is the proof that all the symmetric products of a finite Galois-Maximal space are Galois-Maximal spaces. This applies to the special case of real algebraic varieties, solving the problem first stated by Biswas and D'Mello in \cite{biswas&d'mello:symmetric_products_M-curves} about symmetric products of Maximal curves. We also give characterisations of these spaces and state a new definition that generalises to a larger class of spaces. Then, we extend the characterisation in terms of the Borel cohomology given in \cite{us} to the new family. Finally, we introduce the notion of cohomological stability and cohomological splitting, provide a systematic treatment and relate them with the properties of being a Maximal or Galois-Maximal space. These cohomological properties play an important role in the proof of our main theorem.

Anomaly and invertible field theory with higher-form symmetry: Extended group cohomology

Abstract:In the realm of invertible symmetry, the topological approach based on classifying spaces dominates the classification of 't Hooft anomalies and symmetry protected topological phases. We explore the alternative algebraic approach based on cochains that directly characterize the lattice lagrangian of invertible field theories and the anomalous phase factor of topological operator rearrangements. In the current literature, the algebraic approach has been systematically described for only finite 0-form symmetries. In this initial work, we generalize it to finite higher-form symmetries with trivial higher-group structure. We carefully analyze the algebraic cochains and abstract a purely algebraic structure that naturally generalizes group cohomology. Using techniques from simplicial homotopy theory, we show its isomorphism to the cohomology of classifying spaces. The proof is based on an explicit construction of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces and their products.

Abstract:We give a formula for the essential dimension of a cohomology class $\alpha$ in $H^d(K, \mathbb{Q}_p/\mathbb{Z}_p (d))$ when $K$ is a strictly Henselian field. This formula is particularly explicit in the case, where $\alpha$ is a Brauer class (for $d = 2$). As an application of our bound with $d = 3$, we study the essential dimension of exceptional groups by examining the image of the Rost invariant.

An adjunction theorem for Davydov-Yetter cohomology and infinitesimal braidings

Abstract:Davydov-Yetter cohomology $H_{\mathrm{DY}}^{\bullet}(F)$ is associated to a monoidal functor $F: \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{D}$ between $\Bbbk$-linear monoidal categories where $\Bbbk$ is a field, and its second degree classifies the infinitesimal deformations of the monoidal structure of $F$. Our main result states that if $F$ admits a right adjoint $R$, then there is an object $\Gamma$ in the Drinfeld center $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$ defined in terms of $R$ such that the Davydov-Yetter cohomology of $F$ can be expressed as the Davydov-Yetter cohomology of the identity functor on $\mathcal{C}$ with the coefficient $\Gamma$. We apply this result in the case when the product functor $\otimes: \mathcal{C} \boxtimes\mathcal{C} \to\mathcal{C}$ has a monoidal structure given by a braiding $c$ on $\mathcal{C}$ and determine explicitly the coefficient $\Gamma$ as a coend object in $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C}) \boxtimes \mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$. The motivation is that $H^{\bullet}_{\mathrm{DY}}(\otimes)$ contains a ``space of infinitesimal braidings tangent to $c$'' in a way that we describe precisely. For $\mathcal{C} = H\text{-}\mathrm{mod}$, where $H$ is a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over a field $\Bbbk$, this is the Zariski tangent space to the affine variety of R-matrices for $H$. In the case of perfect $\Bbbk$, we give a dimension formula for this space as an explicit end involving only (low-degree) relative Ext's of the standard adjunction between $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$ and $\mathcal{C}$. As a further application of the adjunction theorem, we describe deformations of the restriction functor associated to a Hopf subalgebra and a Drinfeld twist. Both applications are illustrated in the example of bosonization of exterior algebras.

Abstract:It is well-known that the cohomology of symmetric quandles generates robust cocycle invariants for unoriented classical and surface links. Expanding on the recently introduced module-theoretic generalized cohomology for symmetric quandles, we derive a four-term exact sequence that relates 1-cocycles, second cohomology, and a specific group of automorphisms associated with the extensions of symmetric quandles. This exact sequence shows that the obstruction to lifting and extending automorphisms is found in the second symmetric quandle cohomology. Additionally, some general aspects of dynamical cocycles and extensions are discussed.

Abstract:We initiate a study of asymptotic dimension for locally compact groups. This notion extends the existing invariant for discrete groups and is shown to be finite for a large class of residually compact groups. Along the way, the notion of Hirsch length is extended to topological groups and classical results of Hirsch and Malcev are extended using a topological version of the Poincaré lemma. We show that polycyclic-by-compact groups and compactly generated, topologically virtually nilpotent groups are residually compact, and that compactly generated nilpotent groups are polycyclic-by-compact. We prove that for compactly generated, solvable-by-compact groups the asymptotic dimension is majorized by the Hirsch length, and equality holds for polycyclic-by-compact groups. We extend the class of elementary amenable groups beyond the discrete case and show that topologically elementary amenable groups with finite Hirsch length have finite asymptotic dimension. We prove that a topologically elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length with no nontrivial locally elliptic normal closed subgroup is solvable-by-compact. Finally, we show that a totally disconnected, locally compact, second countable [SIN]-group has finite asymptotic dimension, if all of its discrete quotients are so.

Higher Hochschild homology and exponential functors

Abstract:We study higher Hochschild homology evaluated on wedges of circles, viewed as a functor on the category of free groups. The main results use coefficients arising from square-zero extensions; this is motivated by work of Turchin and Willwacher in relation to hairy graph cohomology. The functorial point of view allows us to exploit tools such as the theory of polynomial functors and exponential functors. We also introduce and make essential use of the category of outer functors, the full subcategory of functors on free groups on which inner automorphisms act trivially. We give a description of higher Hochschild homology in terms of intrinsically defined polynomial outer functors; we also obtain several explicit computations of these outer functors, working over a field of characteristic zero. In particular, higher Hochschild homology gives a natural source of non-trivial polynomial outer functors.

Abstract:We establish finite nuclear dimension for crossed product C*-algebras arising from various classes of possibly non-free topological actions, including arbitrary actions of finitely generated virtually nilpotent groups on finite dimensional spaces, certain amenable actions of hyperbolic groups, and certain allosteric actions of wreath products. We obtain these results by introducing a new notion of dimension for topological dynamical systems, called the long thin covering dimension, which involves a suitable version of Rokhlin-type towers with controlled overlaps for possibly non-free actions.
